  • How to manage a MotionEvent going from one View to another?

    I have a SurfaceView that takes up part of the screen, and some buttons along the bottom. When a button is pressed and the user drags, I want to be able to drag a picture (based on the button) onto the SurfaceView and have it drawn there. I want to be able to use clickListeners and the like, and not just have a giant SurfaceView with me writing code to detect where the user pressed and if it's a button, etc. I have somewhat of a solution, but it seems a bit of a hack to me. What is the best way to accomplish this using the framework intelligently?     I am trying to build a self-updating collection. Each item in the collection has a position (x,y). When the position is changed, an event is fired, and the collection will relocate the item. Internally the collection is using a “jagged dictionary”. The outer dictionary uses the x-coordinate a key, while the nested dictionary uses the y-coordinate a key. The nested dictionary then has a list of items as value. The collection also maintains a dictionary to store the items position as stored in the nested dictionaries – item to stored location lookup. I am having some trouble making the collection thread safe, which I really need.   • ADODB DB2 DSN using IBMDADB2 provider

    I have a very bizarre issue with trying to establish a working connection to an IBM DB2 server from Classic ASP using ADODB. On my development server I am running IIS and have a local instance of DB2 running. When I create a system DSN on this server and try to connect to it with ADODB, I have to specify Provider=IBMDADB2; in my connection along with the DSN name - failure to include the provider and my connection won't work. On my production server(s), I have one running IIS and a second system running an instance of DB2. When I create a system DSN on the production IIS server and try to connect to it with ADODB, I cannot specify the provider, otherwise it throws an uncatchable error in an external module (I assume it's referring to the DB2 module) if I try to do anything past get a connection (oddly, opening the connection itself doesn't throw an error - but if I run a query it does). If I remove the Provider=IBMDADB2; from the connection string (thus I just have DSN=some_name), it works fine. On both systems I can verify through the ODBC connection manager that the DSN's work and can connect to the databases, and on both systems I have made sure to set the correct (only) instance of DB2 as the default. Can anyone tell me why I have to have different connection strings for the development and production servers? I would like to be able to use the same connection string for both environments if at all possible. If that means either specifying a provider for both, or for neither I don't care which - I would just like to know what's going on and how to fix it.

    I'm working on a systems monitoring product that currently focuses on performance at the system level. We're expanding out to monitoring database systems. Right now we can fetch simple performance information from a selection of DBMS, like connection count, disk IO rates, lock wait times, etc. However, we'd really like a way to measure the execution time of every query going into a DBMS, without requiring the client to implement monitoring in their application code. Some potential solutions might be: Some sort of proxy that sits between client and server. SSL might be an issue here, plus it requires us to reverse engineer and implement the network protocol for each DBMS. Plugin for each DBMS system that automatically records performance information when a query comes in. Other problems include "anonymising" the SQL, i.e. taking something like SELECT * FROM products WHERE price > 20 AND name LIKE "%disk%" and producing SELECT * FROM products WHERE price > ? AND name LIKE "%?%", though this shouldn't be too difficult with some clever parsing and regex. We're mainly focusing on: MySQL MSSQL Oracle Redis mongodb memcached Are there any plugin-style mechanisms we can utilise for any of these? Or is there a simpler solution?

  • Developer's PC - worth getting more than 8GB RAM?

    I'm building a developer PC and am wondering whether to get 8GB or 12GB. It's a Core-i7 860 system, i.e., 1156 motherboards with 4 slots for RAM sticks, dual channel, usually up 16GB (as opposed to 1366 sockets where 6 banks / triple-channel are used). 8GB would be cheaper to get especially because price per GB is lower with 4x2GB compared to 2x4GB. Also the availability is worse for 4GB DIMMs here where I live; those are the main practical advantages of 8GB. (Edit: I should have stressed the price difference more - in the eshop I'm buying from, the difference between 12GB and 8GB is so big that I could almost buy a whole new netbook for it.) However, I understand that more RAM can never do harm which is the point of this question - how much of a difference will 12GB make as opposed to 8GB? Honestly, I've always been on 3.2GB systems (4GB but 32bit system) and never felt much pain from having too little memory - of course there could be more but for instance compiler's performance was usually held back by slow I/O or not utilizing multiple cores on my CPU. Still, I'm not questioning that 8GB will be useful, however, I'm not sure about the additional 4GB difference between 8 and 12 gig. Anyone has experience with 8GB / 12GB systems? The software I usually run all the time: Visual Studio or Eclipse (both should be fine with ~2GB RAM, after that I feel their performance is I/O bound) Firefox (it can never have enough RAM can it? :) Office (~500MB RAM should be enough) ... and then some smaller apps like Skype, other browsers, some background services etc.

    I'm an advanced level user here with an odd issue. I have two Windows Updates that are failing to install, every single time. I'm getting a mysterious "Code 1" error on both updates, an error for which I'm having difficulty finding a solution. The updates in question are: Security Update for Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Service Pack 1 Redistributable Package (KB2538243) System Update Readiness Tool for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB947821) [May 2011] Because these updates are failing, the Shut Down button in my start menu always has the shield icon next to it, indicating that "new" updates will be installed on shut down. But, of course, they'll fail and when the PC is restarted, the shield icon is still there.     I have a Rails application that is on a virtual machine (RHEL 6) and it's database is on dedicated hardware (also RHEL 6). The app server has an NFS directory from the db server mounted and accessible. It needs to write images to that server that are uploaded via the app. Background processes on the db server need to read and write to the same directory, as they perform resizing operations on the uploaded files. Right now none of this is working, because the user ids are different between the two systems. I only need this to work for this one application, so it is way too much overhead to put an LDAP system in place. Can I simply change the user id of this one user in one of the systems, or will that cause mass chaos? UPDATE: The fix worked, at least on local devices. Unfortunately the device I have mounted to the main db server still thinks my user id is 502 instead of 506. Do I need to remount that device, or is there an NFS daemon I can stop and restart to refresh it?

    Okay... Not sure how "out there" this thought is... Right now to send a pager message (aka text message), a user logs into our AS400... logs into the program... enters user name and message and hit's F10 to send. With a little looking, it seems that you can run remote commands to the AS400 via FTP. So I'm working on building a script (batch or otherwise) that, given two parameters (user, message), will FTP into the AS400 and run a remote command: c:\>ftp server user: admin password: ***** ftp> quote rcmd SNDPGRMSG TOPGR(JDOE) MSG('This is a Test') ftp> quit So... what I want to do is setup an email account on our Exchange server Monitor the account for incoming mail upon receipt of incoming mail, parse it... say for example subject is defined as "Recipient" and email text is defined as "Pager message" run a batch that uses the above mentioned TOPGR and MSG as parameters... via FTP to the AS400 mark email as "read" The main thing I'm not sure about is monitoring an exchange account and running a script on incoming emails. I'm sure what I want to do is possible... but where would I start? EDIT: Clarification The main reasons for using this four part system are logging (messages sent via this are logged and reported by the AS400 program) and the existing scheduler for redirecting pages (For example, the weekly on-call person = TOPGR(oncall) gets updated by the AS400 program). I'm also trying to remove duplicate work. If I can get this setup working, I can redirect pages from OTHER systems into this one. I then don't have to update 2, soon to be 3, systems with current phone numbers, carriers, on-call schedules, etc. System #2 and #3 can just "email" [email protected].

  • Network monitoring tools with API features

    We use ks-soft's Advanced Hostmonitor package to monitor around 2000 items on our network. We think it's great, the chap that supports it is fantastic, the product is fast, stable and mature but I feel as as we grow as a company it's beginning to show some friction points in the area of integration with our back office admin systems. One of the things we'd like to do is be able to add new tests to whatever monitoring tool we use via an API. For example, when orders for servers come from our retail interface, the server gets built automatically, and as part of the automated build process we'd like to automatically add new tests to the network monitoring systems. Hostmonitor has some support for this via a feature called HM Script but we're starting to encounter some speedbumps - we can't add new operators/users we can't define new "Action Profiles" - these are the actions to be taken when a test goes good or bad. What we love about hostmonitor though are the Action Profiles. For example if a Windows IIS box goes bad our action profile for a bad test does something like: Check host again (one time) Wait another 30 seconds then test again Try restart app pool on remote machine (up to two times) Send an email to ops about the restart failure Try restarting IIS on remote machine (up to four times) Page duty admin (up to 5 times - stops after duty admin ACKS alert) Page backup duty admin (5 times - stops after duty admin ACKS alert) I'm starting to look around at other network monitoring tools and I'm looking for: a comprehensive API to be able to add/remove/control tests/test "action profiles"/operators (not just plugins, we need control and admin interfaces) the ability to have quite detailed action/escalation profiles (and define these via an API) I've looked at Nagios and Icinga but Ican't seem to glean from their documentation whether we could have these features or not, or if we could, how much work would be involved to implement/customise. Can anyone provide any advice, guidance or experiences?

  • Automatically check for Security Updates on CentOS or Scientific Linux?

    We have machines running RedHat-based distros such as CentOS or Scientific Linux. We want the systems to automatically notify us if there are any known vulnerabilities to the installed packages. FreeBSD does this with the ports-mgmt/portaudit port. RedHat provides yum-plugin-security, which can check for vulnerabilities by their Bugzilla ID, CVE ID or advisory ID. In addition, Fedora recently started to support yum-plugin-security. I believe this was added in Fedora 16. Scientific Linux 6 did not support yum-plugin-security as of late 2011. It does ship with /etc/cron.daily/yum-autoupdate, which updates RPMs daily. I don't think this handles Security Updates only, however. CentOS does not support yum-plugin-security. I monitor the CentOS and Scientific Linux mailinglists for updates, but this is tedious and I want something which can be automated. For those of us who maintain CentOS and SL systems, are there any tools which can: Automatically (Progamatically, via cron) inform us if there are known vulnerabilities with my current RPMs. Optionally, automatically install the minimum upgrade required to address a security vulnerability, which would probably be yum update-minimal --security on the commandline? I have considered using yum-plugin-changelog to print out the changelog for each package, and then parse the output for certain strings. Are there any tools which do this already?

  • Recommended programming language for linux server management and web ui integration

    I am interested in making an in house web ui to ease some of the management tasks I face with administrating many servers; think Canonical's Landscape. This means doing things like, applying package updates simultaneously across servers, perhaps installing a custom .deb (I use ubuntu/debian.) Reviewing server logs, executing custom scripts, viewing status information for all my servers. I hope to be able to reuse existing command line tools instead of rewriting the exact same operations in a different language myself. I really want to develop something that allows me to continue managing on the ssh level but offers the power of a web interface for easily applying the same infrastructure wide changes. They should not be mutually exclusive. What are some recommended programming languages to use for doing this kind of development and tying it into a web ui? Why do you recommend the language(s) you do? I am not an experienced programmer, but view this as an opportunity to scratch some of my own itches as well as become a better programmer. I do not care specifically if one language is harder than another, but am more interested in picking the best tools for the job from the beginning. Feel free to recommend any existing projects that already integrate management of many systems into a single cohesive web ui, except Landscape (not free,) Ebox (ebox control center not free) and webmin (I don't like it, feels clunky and does not integrate well with the "debian way" of maintaining a server, imo. Also, only manages one system.) Thanks for any ideas! Update: I am not looking to reinvent the wheel of systems management, I just want to "glue" many preexisting and excellent tools together where possible and appropriate; this is why I wonder about what languages can interact well with pre-existing command line tools, while making them manageable with a web ui.

    We've just been informed by our software vendor that the custom document management system they'd written is no longer in development, and will not be supported in the future. So we are looking at new document management systems. Requirements: Multiple input vectors, we receive documents via e-mail, fax, scanning, and from the originating application Ability to Redact or obscure data. Customers may fax an order with CC data, we want to attach the image of the order form with the order record, but the CC data needs to be protected. Same with Tax IDs. Certain users should be able to see the redacted data, but access should be logged. Version control on documents. We'd like Product Development and Marketing to be able to track various versions of documents like Packaging Designs, but ensure that users have the latest approved version. AD integration, my users don't need another password. Ability to integrate to other apps. Our current system, offers function keys in the order-entry system, that will spawn the viewer application, and open the correct document. Mass import facility, we have a half a terabyte of existing documents in the old system that we would like to import. Retention Policy. I'd like a way to have the system comply with the corporate retention policy, so that when a document of a certain type reaches a certain age, it gets deleted, or atleast marked for manual deletion. We are a Windows Server and HP-UX shop. Does anybody have any experience with Document Management systems that they would like to share? Thanks.

  • Why is Windows Update trying to install an update I don't need?

    I have a Windows 7 system that currently has a single update pending: Windows Internet Explorer 9 for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems If I try to install the update, Windows Update will: Create a restore point Fail with the error: Code 9C48 Windows Update encountered an error. The event log for the event reads: Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update with error 0x80070643: Windows Internet Explorer 9 for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems. If you search the web for that error, there are many other people with the exact same issue. Sadly, I am unable to apply the proposed solutions to my case, because I just installed this system. There is nothing on it, except Windows 7. I installed the system and ran through the updates. I also did the exact same process with this machine several times over the past few days due to a long-term test we just started. I didn't have any problems with any Windows Update on the previous installation runs and I know I didn't do anything different this time because I followed the installation procedures instructions which are to be used during the test. How did this happen and how do I solve it? Further Investigation So, as I always like to do, I ran the update again while running Process Monitor and dug up further details. WindowsUpdate.log First of all, there is a Windows Update log file located at C:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log which I didn't know about.   • Which linux distributions offer seamless support for UEFI and an LVM root out of the box?

    My new ultrabook (an Asus UX32VD) requires UEFI in order to boot from the internal harddisk. I use an LVM partition which contains my root fs and dual-boot Windows 8. I somehow managed to get this working on Sabayon Linux, however the overall process was pretty painful, and system upgrades keep breaking my configuration because everything depends on a hand-configured kernel and a hand-crafted GRUB2 configuration. This causes a lot of hassle and distractions for me, so I am considering to switch to a different distribution. However, I cannot find any concrete resources that precisely document the state of UEFI support in the popular distributions. As an example, the length of the Ubuntu wiki page on UEFI suggests that installing on UEFI systems is a non-trivial process, and this AskUbuntu thread on encrypted LVM on UEFI systems suggests that LVM might also be a problem. I know that this question seems somewhat open-ended, so I'll formulate concrete questions: Are there any Linux distributions with an installer that supports installing to an LVM root in a UEFI boot setting where Windows 8 is dual-booted? Which distributions support UEFI without having to jump through hoops in order to bootstrap into a UEFI-booted system or requiring manual configuration of the boot manager?

  • Networking Problem MrxSmb event 50 "Delayed Write Failed" errors occurring all of the sudden

    JUST THIS MONTH, we have started getting reports from a number of very stable clients that MrxSmb event id 50 errors keep appearing in their system event logs. Otherwise, they do not appear to have any networking problems except that there is a critical legacy application which seems to either be generating the MrxSmb errors or having errors occur because of them. The legacy application is comprised of 16 bit and 32 bit code and has not been changed or recompiled in many years. It has always been stable on Windows XP systems. The customers that have the problem usually have a small (5 clients or less) peer to peer network with all Windows XP systems. All service packs are loaded on the XP machines. Note: The only thing that seems to correct the problem is disabling opportunistic locking. I don't like this solution because it seems to slow down the network and sometimes causes record locking issues between users (on some networks). Also, this seems to have just started happening - as if a Windows update for XP has caused it? However, I have removed recent updates and it did not correct the issue.   • Synchronization of volume snapshots when doing whole system backups

    Is there a way to guarantee consistency across volumes when doing backups from LVM snapshots? Consider this scenario: Some system upgrade is in progress. It will write some files to the /usr volume, and once completed, will record success in the /var volume. As the upgrade is just about complete, I run a backup script that creates snapshots of the /usr and /var volumes, along with the rest of the system's volumes, and proceeds to create backups from those snapshots. Just before the upgrade's last write/flush on the /usr volume completes, the backup script takes its snapshot of /usr. That write completes, and the upgrade operation's success is quickly recorded in the nebulous depths of /var. The backup script takes a snapshot of /var. The backup script creates backups from the snapshots it has, er, snapshotted. So the result of all of this tomfoolery is that the resulting /usr backup contains a file which is missing a few bits, and the /var backup contains metadata indicating that that file is complete and approved for use. Without delving into the details of which operating systems' system upgrade systems would be unfazed by such trifles, is there a way to avoid such problems? At the least this seems like it could cause some application to fail unexpectedly after restoration of such a backup.
