• Ruby page loading very very slowly - how should I speed it up?

  Hey guys, I'm going to try and describe the code in my view, without actually posting all the garbage: It has a standard shell (header, footer etc. in the layout) this is also where the sub navigation exists which is based on a loop (to find the amount of options) - on this page, we have 6 subnav links. Then in the index view, we have a 3rd level nav - with 3 links that use javascript to link/hide divs on the page. This means each of those original 6 options, all have their own 3'rd level nav, with each of their own 3 div pages. These three pages/divs have the input form for creating a record in rails, and then the other 2 pages show the records in different assortments. ALL of this code lives on one page (aside from the shell). The original sub nav uses a javascript tab solution, to browse through all of it... (this means its about 6 divs, which all contain 4 divs of function - so about 24 heavy divs). Loading it seems to take forever, although after loaded its extremely fast (obviously). My big question, is how should I attack this? I don't know ajax - although I imagine it'd be a good solution for loading the tabs when clicked. Thanks! Elliot

• asp.net, how to change text color to red in child nodes in VB codes?

  I got everything worked now by list of server Name but I want to add a IF statement by checking a column from SQL Server called Compliance by either True or False value listed. If it False, the Name will change text color to Red. If it True, the Name won't change text color. I am not sure how add that in VB codes side. I am pretty sure that I would need to put IF statement inside While dr.Read(). I am pretty new to VB.Net and not sure which VB code that change text color. • xcode 5.1: libCordova.a architecture problems

  Yesterday (3/10/14) when iOS 7.1 was released I also upgraded to Xcode 5.1 and found that my PhoneGap/Cordova project would no longer compile to my iPhone 5s. I also upgraded Cordova to the most recent release: v 3.4.0-0.1.3. I have read many different solutions on SO that relate so changing active architectures and building only active architectures, and none of them work. So here's what I've tried and the errors I get. Initially I got the error: missing required architecture arm64 in file <long file path omitted> libCordova.a Undefined symbols for architecture arm64 So I tried the following. I selected the CordovaLib sub-project in my project, and in both the project and target, I went to Build Settings under Architectures and made sure that arm64 was not included in any of the Debug or Release architectures. At this time Build Active Architecture Only is set to "Yes". That resulted in the following error: file was built for archive which is not the architecture being linked (armv7): <long file path omitted> libCordova.a Undefined symbols for architecture armv7 Setting Build Active Architecture Only to "No", the error again becomes: missing required architecture arm64 in file <long file path omitted> libCordova.a Undefined symbols for architecture arm64 I'm not sure what else to try. The project's architecture settings only includes the key "Base SDK" which is set to iOS 7.1. The project's target does not have architectures settings. Anyway I'm fairly certain the problem lies with the embedded CordovaLib sub-project. What can I do to make this thing compile to my device successfully? • Searching a document for multiple terms in VBA?

  I'm trying to create a macro to be used in Microsoft Word 2007 that will search a document for multiple keywords (string variables) located in an external Excel file (the reason for having it in an external file is that the terms will often be changed and updated). I've figured out how to search a document paragraph by paragraph for a single term and color every instance of that term, and I assumed that the proper method would be to use a dynamic array as the search term variable. The question is: how do I get the macro to create an array containing all the terms from an external file and search each paragraph for each and every term? • Database not updating after UPDATE SQL statement in ASP.net

  I currently have a problem attepting to update a record within my database. I have a webpage that displays in text boxes a users details, these details are taken from the session upon login. The aim is to update the details when the user overwrites the current text in the text boxes. I have a function that runs when the user clicks the 'Save Details' button and it appears to work, as i have tested for number of rows affected and it outputs 1. However, when checking the database, the record has not been updated and I am unsure as to why. • Django: how to cleanup form fields and avoid code duplication

  Quite often I need to filter some form data before using it (saving to database etc.) Let's say I want to strip whitespaces and replace repeating whitespaces with a single one in most of the text fields, in many forms. It's not difficult to do this using clean_<fieldname> methods: # Simplified model with two text fields class MyModel(models.Model): title = models.CharField() description = models.CharField() # Model-based form class MyForm(forms.ModelForm): class Meta: model = MyModel def clean_title(self): title = self.cleaned_data['title'] return re.sub(r'\s{2,}', ' ', title.strip()) def clean_description(self): description = self.cleaned_data['description'] return re.sub(r'\s{2,}', ' ', description.strip()) It does exactly what I need, and has a nice side effect which I like: if user enters only whitespaces, the field will be considered empty and therefore invalid (if it is required) and I don't even have to throw a ValidationError. The obvious problem here is code duplication. • ASP.NET MVC on GoDaddy Not Working (Not Primary Domain Deployment)

  I am trying to get ASP.NET MVC working on GoDaddy and I'm not having much luck. I have read the post on SO that covers the subject, but I must have a slightly different configuration or must be missing somehting along the way because the main MVC page comes up, but all links seem to fail and no amount of tweaking the URLs seems to get it to work. A little back ground. I have a single hosting plan with many domains pointed to sub folders of the main domain. Basic ASP.NET web forms pages work just fine, but of course I wanted to try and host a sample MVC site in one of these non-primary domains. You can go to the URL here. As you can see this first page comes up, but if you click on Home or About it doesn't work. Clicking on Home creates this link "http://www.jprescottsanders.com/jps/" and clicking on about creates this link "http://www.jprescottsanders.com/jps/Home/About". As you can see JPS sneaks in there, this of course is the sub folder that i place my web app files in. I would like to know if this is a MVC related issue or a GoDaddy issue. I suspect that MVC may want to sit in the root directory of the site, and when it puts the "jps" into the URLs it breaks the routing mechanisms (but this is conjecture). I know Dan said this was possible so I'm hoping he sees this and helps me get to the bottom of this deployment strategy for MVC.

  Hi All, I have the following code which imports data from a spreadsheet to SQL directly from Excel VBA. The code works great. However I am wondering if somebody can help me modify the code to: 1) Check if data from column A already exists in the SQL Table 2) If exists, then only update rather than import as a new role 3) if does not exist then import as a new role. • how to 'scale' these three tables?

  I have the following Tables: Players id playerName Weapons id type otherData Weapons2Player id playersID_reference weaponsID_reference That was nice and simple. Now I need to SELECT items from the Weapons table, according to some of their characteristics that i previously just packed into the otherData column (since it was only needed on the client side). The problem is, that the types have varying characteristics - but also a lot of similar data. So I'm trying to decide on the following possibilities, all of which have their pros and cons. Solution A Kill the Weapons table, and create a new table for each Weapon-Type: Weapons_Swords id bladeType damage otherData Weapons_Guns id accuracy damage ammoType otherData But how will i Link these to the Players ? create Weapons_Swords2Players, Weapons_Guns2Players for each weapon-type? (Will result in a lot more JOINS when loading the player with all his weapons...and it's also more complicated to insert a new player) or add another column to Weapons2Players called WeaponsTypeTable, then do sub-selects to the correct Weapons sub-table (seems easier, but not really right, slightly easier insert i guess) Solution B Keep the Weapons table, and add all the fields i need to it. The Problem is that then there will be NULL fields, since not all Weapon-Types use all fields (can't be right) Weapons id type accuracy damage ammoType bladeType otherData This seems to be pretty basic stuff, but i just can't decide what's best. • Disabling normal link behaviour on click with an if statement in Jquery?

  I've been banging my head with this all day, trying anything and everything I can think of to no gain. I'm no Jquery guru, so am hoping someone here can help me out. What I'm trying to do in pseudo code (concept) seems practical and easy to implement, but obviously not so =D What I have is a navigation sidebar, with sub menu's within some li's, and a link at the head of each li. When a top level link is clicked, I want the jquery to check if the link has a sibling ul. If it does, the link doesn't act like a link, but slides down the sibling sub nav. If there isn't one, the link should act normally. • MS Access: Why is ADODB.Recordset.BatchUpdate so much slower than Application.ImportXML?

  I'm trying to run the code below to insert a whole lot of records (from a file with a weird file format) into my Access 2003 database from VBA. After many, many experiments, this code is the fastest I've been able to come up with: it does 10000 records in about 15 seconds on my machine. At least 14.5 of those seconds (ie. almost all the time) is in the single call to UpdateBatch. I've read elsewhere that the JET engine doesn't support UpdateBatch. So maybe there's a better way to do it. Now, I would just think the JET engine is plain slow, but that can't be it. After generating the 'testy' table with the code below, I right clicked it, picked Export, and saved it as XML. Then I right clicked, picked Import, and reloaded the XML. Total time to import the XML file? Less than one second, ie. at least 15x faster. Surely there's an efficient way to insert data into Access that doesn't require writing a temp file? • In .NET, Why Can I Access Private Members of a Class Instance within the Class?

  While cleaning some code today written by someone else, I changed the access modifier from Public to Private on a class variable/member/field. I expected a long list of compiler errors that I use to "refactor/rework/review" the code that used this variable. Imagine my surprise when I didn't get any errors. After reviewing, it turns out that another instance of the Class can access the private members of another instance declared within the Class. Totally unexcepted. Is this normal? I been coding in .NET since the beginning and never ran into this issue, nor read about it. I may have stumbled onto it before, but only "vaguely noticed" and move on. Can anyone explain this behavoir to me? I would like to know the "why" I can do this. Please explain, don't just tell me the rule. Am I doing something wrong? I found this behavior in both C# and VB.NET. The code seems to take advantage of the ability to access private variables. • permutations gone wrong

  I have written code to implement an algorithm I found on string permutations. What I have is an arraylist of words ( up to 200) and I need to permutate the list in levels of 5. Basically group the string words in fives and permutated them. What I have takes the first 5 words generates the permutations and ignores the rest of the arraylist? Any ideas appreciated. • Crashing when pushing a XIB based view controller onto navigation controller stack

  I was attempting to clean up the implementation for a sub-panel on a navigation controller stack, so that the navigation bar could be customized in the XIB instead of doing it manually in the viewDidLoad method. The original (working) setup had the XIB set up with the "File's Owner" class set to the view controller class, and then the view at the top level. This works fine. In the "Interface Builder User Guide", p. 71, it describes the recommended way to build the XIBs for sub-panels ("additional navigation levels"). This approach leaves the "File's Owner" class as NSObject, but adds a UIViewController at the top level, and nests the view (and navigation item) underneath it. The UIViewController's view automatically gets connected to the contained view. When I try to push the controller init'd with this new XIB, the app crashes because of a missing view: SettingsViewController *controller = [[SettingsViewController alloc] initWithNibName:@"SettingsView" bundle:nil]; [self.navigationController pushViewController:controller animated:YES]; 2010-04-23 11:17:37.135 xxxx[1173:207] * Terminating app due to uncaught exception 'NSInternalInconsistencyException', reason: '-[UIViewController _loadViewFromNibNamed:bundle:] loaded the "SettingsTestView" nib but the view outlet was not set.' • Why should the "prime-based" hashcode implmentation be used instead of the "naive" one?

  I have seen that a prime number implmentation of the GetHashCode function is being recommend, for example here. However using the following code (in VB, sorry), it seems as if that implementation gives the same hash density as a "naive" xor implementation. If the density is the same, I would suppose there is the same probability of cllision in both implementations. Am I missing anything on why is the prime approach preferred? I am supossing that if the hash code is a byte I do not lose generality for the integer case.
