• Acer Aspire 1360 Recovery CDs

  I have replaced a dead hard disk in an out of warranty Acer Apire 1360 laptop. The two recovery CDs I have dont appear to be bootable, they just contain .hdd and .ghs (image?) files. On the original broken hard drive there was a hidden partition which could be invoked by pressing alt+f10 when booting. You would then be prompted for the 2 recovery CDs to perform the restore. Obviously the new hard drive does not contain the hidden Acer recovery partition. This being the case, how do I go about restoring Win XP? The 2 CDs are called Aspire 1360/1520 Serires Recovery CD Disk 1 of 2 and 2 of 2. Am I missing a futher bootable recovery CD? Can anyone confirm how many restore CDs originally came with the laptop.

• Does the Windows "Sources" folder need copied to C: like the "i386" folder did?

  On all flavors of Windows prior to Windows Vista, the Windows install CD contained a folder called i386. After installing Windows, this folder is suppose to be copied to the C: drive. Once the folder has been copied, if user is ever installing a program or windows updates that require the Windows install CD, it will retrieve the files from the hard drive INSTEAD of prompting for the Windows CD. On new versions of Windows, including Windows Vista, Windows 7, Server 2008 and Server 2008 R2, the i386 folder has been renamed to "sources". Should this folder be copied to the hard drive? Or do the new versions of Windows work differently (i.e. by installing all features on the hard drive to eliminate the need for ever prompting the user to insert their disc.) It does not hurt to copy the sources folder, so I have been doing it. But if I could eliminate time wasted it would make installations faster which helps my customers' bottom line.

• What would happen in a Software Raid 1 of one HDD and one SSD?

  Hi, I'm running my Windows 7 installation and all of my apps from an SSD for performance reasons. Since SSD's can instantly die at any moment, I'm looking for some kind of data backup strategy. Right Now I regularly backing up the drive image on a hard disk, but that only happens once per day, which is not enough for my taste. So I got an idea: What if I created a software raid 1 of the SSD and partition on my Hard disk? All data would be mirrored on both drives, making this a lot safer. But what about performance? Will Windows 7 detect that the SSD is faster than the hard drive and always read from the SSD? Or will it randomly read from both, thus reducing read performance? • specify temp folder for msi extracted files used for installation

  I was recently installing Microsoft Windows SDK for Windows 7 and .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 to create my build server on a VM (Windows 2003 R2 Std), I was wondering that it would be nice to specify the temporary folder for the files being extracted by MSI for use during the installation. This should ideally work for any MSIs. I have some more virtual hard disks I have attached to this VMs, to point the temporary folder for MSI to one of these virtual hard disks would be quite productive since I can remove/discard this virtual hard disk later. Compacting the C drive VHD is a pain, and does not always reclaim space correctly. I tried changing the %temp% and tmp environment variable with no effect? • How to set up RAID 1 on Dell PERC S300 With Existing OS Install

  We have a server that is being used in production, but it was not originally meant to. The main thing I want to add to it is a Dell PERC S300 RAID Card to have the main hard drive (Windows Server 2008 R2) mirrored on another hard drive. I can not initialize the disk and wipe the the OS to create the array and then re-install. Is there a way to create the array with a current hard drive, without affecting it, and just mirroring the drive? If that card is not an option, is there a card that would allow that? The server is a Dell PowerEdge T110 II.

• Reading PFS First Choice and Word Perfect 5 files in an XP or Windows 98 environment

  Hello all, My priest has 3 computers, Windows 3.1, Windows 98 and Windows XP. Recently his power supply blew out on his Windows 3.1 computer and he needs to get to the data on the hard drive. He's looking into imaging the hard drive and setting it up as a VM, which might be a bit much for him. Ignoring getting the data off the hard drive as a separate problem, are there any programs out there that can read files from PFS First Choice and Word Perfect 5. He already has Microsoft Office so solutions involving that are preferable. If he can install the software on his Windows XP or 98 computer, that would be helpful too. Thank you for your help

  I used Carbonite to back up 75GB on my iMac. I also created a folder on my iMac to copy files to, from an external hard drive and then use Carbonite to back up from there. And THEN thinking I had everything safely backed up and, in order to make room on my hard drive I DELETED some of those files, and instead of increasing disk space..my disk space has shrunk to 2GB... I know, I know..you can't use Carbonite like that, but now I have two questions. 1) What is the explanation for the decrease in disk space even though I have deleted about 20GB of those backed up files from my hard drive? It must have something to do with the way Carbonite references backed up files, And 2) Is there a way to extricate myself from this situation?

• Help make sense of a KillDisk error/log

  I have a hard drive that I've been trying to reformat. I tried reformatting it in the windows XP and 7 installers, and in an Ubuntu live cd with gparted. I tried using dd to 'zero' the drive as well with no success. Finally I ran across KillDisk after a search. • How can I automatically boot to my new Windows 7 installation?

  When I bought a new computer, I reinstalled windows on the larger hard drive it came with, but kept the old hard drive as well. I'm keeping the old Windows installation on the hard drive in case I need saved passwords or other data only accessible after signing in. On the boot screen, it gives me the option to boot into the installation I'm currently using, or the "recovered" installation. Attempting to boot into the second one fails anyway. Is there a way I can automatically boot into this installation while still maintaining the possibility of booting into the old installation?

• Software to copy non-duplicate files from CD/DVD

  I have several CDs/DVDs which have partially overlapping content (the overlapping files are identical, but have different names), and some of the files are on my hard disk. I need to get the remaining unique files copied to my hard disk. I found a really good duplicate file finder, Duplicate Cleaner, which lets you select multiple folders and then finds duplicates by checksum (or file name, size, date) and is very fast, and free. It won't help me do what I want though, unless I just copied everything, and then deleted the duplicates - but I would have to do multiple cycles, as I don't have room to copy all the CDs/DVDs to my hard disk. I found a couple of file sync programs, but they don't have the compare function - the file names must match. (I tried other duplicate file finders on CNET, but they aren't as good as Duplicate Cleaner, and also don't have the functionality I need.) Thanks for any help.

  I have an external Lacie hard drive connected via USB to my Macbook Pro which is running Snow Leopard. I have nothing but music on the external drive with every album sorted in it's own individual folder and have changed all of the individual folder icons to display the album art of the songs from the album inside. I want to reformat my laptop, but I'm afraid if I do that, the album art will disappear if it's stored on a system file within the main hard drive OS. My question is this, is the information which tells the OS to display the album art listed in a hidden system file on the external Lacie drive or my laptop hard drive and if I reformat will I have to reassociate all of the album art to the folders on the external or will it keep it's associations. OS - Raid 1 - (2)300GB T-Log - Raid 1 (2)300GB DB - Raid 5 (5) 600GB Backup - (1) 600GB - non-raided. However, I could also do the following after purchasing one more drive for backup. OS and T-Log - Raid 10 - (4)300GB DB - Raid 10 (6)600GB The hard drive space is not an issue as the databases are not that large. I'm just trying to optimize the speed of the applications using these databases. So, what would you guys recommend?

• Boot Camp fails to create a Windows partition because it can't move files

  I'm running Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) on a mac with a 320 GB drive, 167GB free space, and I can't get Boot Camp running. The wizard starts creating the Windows partition, but fails with a message claiming it cannot move some files. The message suggests to back up my hard disk, reformat it, restore my files, and re-run Boot Camp wizard. The problem is: Though I do have backups (Time Machine), I don't feel like formatting my hard disk right now :-) I found a thread in some forum discussing this problem. The suggestion was to defragment my volume with iDefrag, and lots of people claimed that solved the issue. So I went ahead and got iDefrag 1.7.1, created a bootable DVD and chose the "compact" setting recommended before partitioning - but still no luck with Boot Camp! So how do I get this working? Fun note: last year, I briefly set up Boot Camp with 10.5, and it worked perfectly. Probably I did not use that much hard disk space back then...

  From a (very long, but definitely worth to read) article on SSDs: When you delete a file in your OS, there is no reaction from either a hard drive or SSD. It isn’t until you overwrite the sector (on a hard drive) or page (on a SSD) that you actually lose the data. File recovery programs use this property to their advantage and that’s how they help you recover deleted files. The key distinction between HDDs and SSDs however is what happens when you overwrite a file. While a HDD can simply write the new data to the same sector, a SSD will allocate a new (or previously used) page for the overwritten data. The page that contains the now invalid data will simply be marked as invalid and at some point it’ll get erased. So, what would be the best way to securely erase files stored on a SSD? Overwriting with random data as we are used to from hard disks (e.g. using the "shred" utility) won't work unless you overwrite the WHOLE drive...

  i have TrueCrypt partition, when i insert it in OS X, it always prompt me to initialize the hard disk. is there a way to prevent os x from detecting uninitialize hard disk? [UPDATE] by the way, as Truecrypt suggested while i'm in Windows, i must make partitions so the os won't detect the hard drive as uninitialized. Windows respected that the drive already have contents by the mere fact that it has partitions, while OS X thinks that it is still uninitialized. i think OS X is trying to be smart by detecting if each partition has a valid filesystem id/marker

  I've recently read that the data that you deleted in windows using shift+del doesn't actually get deleted it is just made to be overwritable by other data that will soon be stored in your hard drive. And just marked as deleted. And there are some articles like this: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/15037/use-an-ubuntu-live-cd-to-securely-wipe-your-pcs-hard-drive/ that shows how to completely wipe out the hard drive of all the data. And thus the data can't be recovered even by the most advanced software for recovering deleted data. Now my question is, does spyware, virus or other harmful really are lost forever if you reformat your drive?

• Ubuntu 9.10 LiveCD stalls after "Install Ubuntu" selected from boot menu on eMachines

  I am trying to install Ubuntu 9.10 from the ISO on a CD (it needs to be this version) on an eMachine with a brand new Seagate hard disk. The CD boots OK, and I choose the language. Then I am presented with the boot menu: Try Ubuntu Install Ubuntu etc I have tried the top two choices several times (trying Ubuntu and installing it), but each and every time the installation stalls and the disc stops spinning right after I hit enter after choosing the option I want. I have tried different CD/DVD drives, changing the jumpers on both CD drives, different hard drives, and nothing works. Maybe there is a BIOS setting that is choking the installation? Any help would be appreciated. Edit - I just tried running the hard drive as the master on the primary IDE and the CD drive as the slave on the primary with the same results. Maybe flash the BIOS?

  I currently have disk quotas working perfectly for Hard Limit Quotas on a CentOS 5 box. Quotas are working fine, but I am looking for a way to alert users either in a Cron or Automatically as Quotas is already running, when they are within X% of their Hard Limit Quota? I would like this email to go out to an email address I configure somehow for each user. I've looked all over the place but can't find it. All I can find is warnquota which only works when a user goes over Quota. The problem is I use Hard Limits, so my users will never go over quota. It needs to warn them when they are within X% of their limits.

• How can I guess if a USB cable will power my devices?

  I've had problems with one long (4 meter) USB Mini-B to USB Type-A cable not being able to boot a 2.5'' external hard disc due to not supplying enough current. On top of that, the cable used a Type-A to Mini-B adapter for the Mini-B part, which probably made things worse. Three different shorter cables I got around made the hard disk work without extra current, so it was definitively the cable's fault. However, if I plugged the hard disk to the power, and used the long cable just for data it worked. Here is some related information on powering through USB cables: http://www.girr.org/mac_stuff/usb_stuff.html I have not any long cables that don't have an intermediary Type-A to Mini-B adapter to try them out. My question is: is there a way to guess if a cable will provide enough power for charge/disk drive power? Is it related to the length of the cable, to the build quality of the cable, or the fact that uses intermediary adapters?
