  I’m loving my expert F# book – today I thought I would give a post on using mutable records as covered in Chapter 4 of Expert F#. So as they explain the simplest mutable data structures in F# are mutable records. The whole concept of things by default being immutable is a new one for me from my C# background.   Every now and then I give project Euler a quick browse. Since I have been playing with F# I have found it a great way to learn the basics of the language. Today I thought I would give problem 1 an attempt… Problem 1 If we list all the natural numbers below 10 that are multiples of 3 or 5, we get 3, 5, 6 and 9. The sum of these multiples is 23. Find the sum of all the multiples of 3 or 5 below 1000. My F# Solution I broke this problem into two functions… 1) be able to generate a collection of numbers that are multiples of a number but but are smaller than another number. let GenerateMultiplesOfXbelowY X Y = X |> Seq.unfold (fun i -> if (i<Y) then Some(i, i+X) else None) I then needed something that generated collections for multiples of 3 & 5 and then removed any duplicates. Once this was done I would need to sum these all together to get a result. • How far should an entity take care of its properties values by itself?

  Let's consider the following example of a class, which is an entity that I'm using through Entity Framework. - InvoiceHeader - BilledAmount (property, decimal) - PaidAmount (property, decimal) - Balance (property, decimal) I'm trying to find the best approach to keep Balance updated, based on the values of the two other properties (BilledAmount and PaidAmount). I'm torn between two practices here: Updating the balance amount every time BilledAmount and PaidAmount are updated (through their setters) Having a UpdateBalance() method that the callers would run on the object when appropriate. I am aware that I can just calculate the Balance in its getter. However, it isn't really possible because this is an entity field that needs to be saved back to the database, where it has an actual column, and where the calculated amount should be persisted to. My other worry about the automatically updating approach is that the calculated values might be a little bit different from what was originally saved to the database, due to rounding values (an older version of the software, was using floats, but now decimals). So, loading, let's say 2000 entities from the database could change their status and make the ORM believe that they have changed and be persisted back to the database the next time the SaveChanges() method is called on the context. It would trigger a mass of updates that I am not really interested in, or could cause problems, if the calculation methods changed (the entities fetched would lose their old values to be replaced by freshly recalculated ones, simply by being loaded). Then, let's take the example even further. Each invoice has some related invoice details, which also have BilledAmount, PaidAmount and Balance (I'm simplifying my actual business case for the sake of the example, so let's assume the customer can pay each item of the invoice separately rather than as a whole). If we consider the entity should take care of itself, any change of the child details should cause the Invoice totals to change as well. In a fully automated approach, a simple implementation would be looping through each detail of the invoice to recalculate the header totals, every time one the property changes. It probably would be fine for just a record, but if a lot of entities were fetched at once, it could create a significant overhead, as it would perform this process every time a new invoice detail record is fetched. Possibly worse, if the details are not already loaded, it could cause the ORM to lazy-load them, just to recalculate the balances. So far, I went with the Update() method-way, mainly for the reasons I explained above, but I wonder if it was right. I'm noticing I have to keep calling these methods quite often and at different places in my code and it is potential source of bugs. It also has a detrimental effect on data-binding because when the properties of the detail or header changes, the other properties are left out of date and the method has no way to be called. What is the recommended approach in this case?

  I am trying to detect when an item is checked, and which item is checked in a ListBox using Silverlight 4 and the Prism framework. I found this example on creating behaviors, and tried to follow it but nothing is happening in the debugger. I have three questions: Why isn't my command executing? How do I determine which item was checked (i.e. pass a command parameter)? How do I debug this? • WPF - Only want one expander open at a time in grouped Listbox

  I have a UserControl with a templated grouped listbox with expanders and only want one expander open at any time. I have browsed through the site but haven't found anything except binding the IsExpanded to IsSelected which isn't quite what I want. I am trying to put some code in the Expanded event that would loop through Expanders and close all the ones that aren't the expander passed in the Expanded event. I can't seem to figure out how to get at them. I've tried ListBox.Items.Groups but didn't see how to get at them and tried ListBox.ItemContainerGenerator.ContainerFromItem (or Index) but nothing came back. • How to create StackedBarSeries with custom tooltip without losing standard colors

  I have a StackedBarSeries in Silverlight 4 charting (latest release). I have created a DataPointStyle called MyDataPointStyle for a custom tooltip. By itself this breaks the standard palette used for the different bars. I've applied a custom palette - as described in David Anson's blog to the chart. However when I have the DataPointStyle set for my SeriesDefinition objects it does not use this palette. I'm not sure what I'm missing - but David specifically says : ... it enables the use of DynamicResource (currently only supported by the WPF platform) to let users customize their DataPointStyle without inadvertently losing the default/custom Palette colors. (Note: A very popular request!) • help setting up wsHttpBinding WCF service on .net

  I'm trying to host a WCF service with wsHttpBinding. I created a certificate using makecert and put some lines in web.config. This is the error that I'm getting: System.ArgumentException: The certificate 'CN=WCfServer' must have a private key that is capable of key exchange. The process must have access rights for the private key. On googling up it seems to be some issue with access rights on the certificate file. I used cacls to give read permission to NETWORK SERVICE and also my username but it didn't change anything. I also went to security settings in the properties of the certificate file and gave full control to NETWORK SERVICE and my username. Again to no avail. Can you guide me as to what the problem is and what exactly I need to do? I'm really flaky with these certificate things.   Hi, I am struggling hard with getting WCF service running on IIS on our server. After deployment I end up with an error message: Security settings for this service require 'Anonymous' Authentication but it is not enabled for the IIS application that hosts this service. I want to use Windows authentication and thus I have Anonymous access disabled. Also note that there is aspNetCompatibilityEnabled (if that makes any difference). • Memory leak on CollectionView.View.Refresh

  I have defined my binding thus: <TreeView ItemsSource="{Binding UsersView.View}" ItemTemplate="{StaticResource MyDataTemplate}" /> The CollectionViewSource is defined thus: private ObservableCollection<UserData> users; public CollectionViewSource UsersView{get;set;} UsersView=new CollectionViewSource{Source=users}; UsersView.SortDescriptions.Add( new SortDescription("IsLoggedOn",ListSortDirection.Descending); UsersView.SortDescriptions.Add( new SortDescription("Username",ListSortDirection.Ascending); So far, so good, this works as expected: The view shows first the users that are logged on in alphabetical order, then the ones that are not. However, the IsLoggedIn property of the UserData is updated every few seconds by a backgroundworker thread and then the code calls: UsersView.View.Refresh(); on the UI thread. Again this works as expected: users that log on are moved from the bottom of the view to the top and vice versa. However: Every time I call the Refresh method on the view the application hoards 3,5MB of extra memory, which is only released after application shutdown (or after an OutOfMemoryException...) I did some research and below is a list of fixes that did NOT work: The UserData class implements INotifyPropertyChanged Changing the underlying users collection does not make any difference at all: any IENumerable<UserData as a source for the CollectionViewSource causes the problem. -Changing the ColletionViewSource to a List<UserData (and refreshing the binding) or inheriting from ObservableCollection to get access to the underlying Items collection to sort that in place does not work. I am out of ideas! Help? EDIT: I found it: The Resource MyDataTemplate contains a Label that is bound to a UserData object to show one of its properties, the UserData objects being handed down by the TreeView's ItemsSource. The Label has a ContextMenu defined thus: <ContextMenu Background="Transparent" Width="325" Opacity=".8" HasDropShadow="True"> <PrivateMessengerUI:MyUserData IsReadOnly="True" > <PrivateMessengerUI:MyUserData.DataContext> <Binding Path="."/> </PrivateMessengerUI:MyUserData.DataContext> </PrivateMessengerUI:MyUserData> </ContextMenu> The MyUserData object is a UserControl that shows All properties of the UserData object. In this way the user first only sees one piece of data of a user and on a right click sees all of it. When I remove the MyUserData UserControl from the DataTemplate the memory leak disappears! How can I still implement the behaviour as specified above?

  On a production server (Windows Server 2003 SP2) I can connect to a remote WCF service with Internet Explorer 8: When I browse to the URL http://www.domain.com/Service.svc (where my service listens) I get the expected info page of the service displayed. Connection settings in Internet Explorer only specify "auto detect", proxy settings are disabled. If I start a console application (built with WCF in .NET 4.0) on the same server which also tries to connect to the same WCF service it fails telling me that no endpoint was available listening on http://www.domain.com/Service.svc. (My hope was that the WCF client will adopt the "autodetect" setting of Internet Explorer and then connect the same way to the service like the installed IE.) I also had toggled the useDefaultWebProxy setting in the binding configuration between true and false with no success. Now I am asking for help what I can do? Which settings might be wrong or missing? What could I test and how can I get more detailed error messages to better identify the problem? Thank you in advance!

  We have a WCF service with multiple clients to schedule operations amongst clients. It worked great on XP. Moving to win7, I can only connect a client to the server on the same machine. At this point, I'm thinking it's something to do with IPv6, but I'm stumped as to how to proceed. Client trying to connect to a remote server gives the following exception: System.ServiceModel.EndpointNotFoundException: Could not connect to net.tcp://10.7.11.14:18297/zetec/Service/SchedulerService/Scheduler. The connection attempt lasted for a time span of 00:00:21.0042014. • WPF - Redrawing a Context Menu when Items change?

  I have a ItemsControl in a ScrollViewer, and when the items exceed the width of the ScrollViewer they are put into a ContextMenu and shown as a DropDown instead. My problem is that when the Context Menu is first loaded, it saves the saves the size of the Menu and does not redraw when more commands get added/removed. For example, a panel has 3 commands. 1 is visible and 2 are in the Menu. Viewing the menu shows the 2 commands and draws the control, but then if you resize the panel so 2 are visible and only 1 command is in the menu, it doesn't redraw the menu to eliminate that second menu item. Or even worse, if you shrink the panel so that no commands are shown and all 3 are in the Menu, it will only show the top 2. Now I want, that if the Checkbox is checked, the cellbackground is green. Hopelessly searched for a checked property. How can I manage this?
