• 3 Servers, is this is a cluster?

  Hello, At the moment I have one Ubuntu server, 9.10, running with a simple Samba share, a mail server, DNS server and DHCP server. Mostly its just there for file sharing and email server. I also have 2 other servers that are exactly the same hardware and spec as the first, which have an rsync set up to retrieve the shared folders and backs them up. However, if the first server goes down, all of our shares disappear along with our mail and the system must be rebuilt. Also I tend to find if people are downloading a large amount from the file server, no-one can access there emails - especially in the morning when everyone is signing in at once. Would it be more beneficial for me to have all 3 servers, all running the same services, doing the same thing with some sort of cluster with load balancing? I'm not really sure where to begin looking, or how to go about such a setup where 3 servers are all identical, but perhaps one acts as the main load balancer?? If someone can point me in the right direction, or if this simply sounds like one of those Enterprise Cloud's that is now a default setup in Ubuntu Server 9.10+, then I'll go down that route.   I usually use if (i == 2) in preference to if (2 == i) On occasion, I would switch things around when writing xUnit-type tests from scratch so as to follow the assertion convention of "expected" preceding "actual". When adding to existing unit tests, I always follow the style I find. No matter what, I always try to keep things consistent. Today I checked out some code with a lot of "if (2 == i)" and started wondering: which style is more "popular" nowadays? is popularity language-dependent? The latter probably because I am aware of why the "if (2 == i)" became common in the first place (C heritage) and because I see some languages go as far as disallowing assignments within conditions (e.g. Python). I thought about downloading some sources: apt-get source linux-source eclipse openoffice.org expanding them and performing a quick grep: grep --color --include=*.java --include=*.c -ERI \ "if[[:space:]]*\([[:space:]]*[[:digit:]]+[[:space:]]==" . or creating a quick "poll": http://goo.gl/mod/ciMF after a bit of searching and asking around, I am still not sure. • Triangle numbers problem....show within 4 seconds

  The sequence of triangle numbers is generated by adding the natural numbers. So the 7th triangle number would be 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 + 6 + 7 = 28. The first ten terms would be: 1, 3, 6, 10, 15, 21, 28, 36, 45, 55, ... Let us list the factors of the first seven triangle numbers: 1: 1 3: 1,3 6: 1,2,3,6 10: 1,2,5,10 15: 1,3,5,15 21: 1,3,7,21 28: 1,2,4,7,14,28 We can see that 28 is the first triangle number to have over five divisors. Given an integer n, display the first triangle number having at least n divisors. Sample Input: 5 Output 28 Input Constraints: 1<=n<=320 I was obviously able to do this question, but I used a naive algorithm: Get n. Find triangle numbers and check their number of factors using the mod operator. But the challenge was to show the output within 4 seconds of input. On high inputs like 190 and above it took almost 15-16 seconds. Then I tried to put the triangle numbers and their number of factors in a 2d array first and then get the input from the user and search the array. But somehow I couldn't do it: I got a lot of processor faults. Please try doing it with this method and paste the code. Or if there are any better ways, please tell me.

  We are facing this error intermittently. If we restart the server it works for some time and again the problem start. We also have another load balanced server with similar configuration and that is working fine. The server is running on Linux box. If we do the "ps -ef" its listing the TOMCAT process. Does it have to do any thing with the certificate. The certificate is generated using Java Keytool. ( However, the other load balanced server is also using the same certificate and working fine) Please suggest in resolving this issue. thanks

  Hi, I would like to use custom Matlab function in Simulink. So far I have done it by placing Embedded Matlab Fuction block. However if the custom function contains another custom function the compile process fails. • Any HTTP proxies with explicit, configurable support for request/response buffering and delayed conn

  When dealing with mobile clients it is very common to have multisecond delays during the transmission of HTTP requests. If you are serving pages or services out of a prefork Apache the child processes will be tied up for seconds serving a single mobile client, even if your app server logic is done in 5ms. I am looking for a HTTP server, balancer or proxy server that supports the following: A request arrives to the proxy. The proxy starts buffering in RAM or in disk the request, including headers and POST/PUT bodies. The proxy DOES NOT open a connection to the backend server. This is probably the most important part. The proxy server stops buffering the request when: A size limit has been reached (say, 4KB), or The request has been received completely, headers and body Only now, with (part of) the request in memory, a connection is opened to the backend and the request is relayed. The backend sends back the response. Again the proxy server starts buffering it immediately (up to a more generous size, say 64KB.) Since the proxy has a big enough buffer the backend response is stored completely in the proxy server in a matter of miliseconds, and the backend process/thread is free to process more requests. The backend connection is immediately closed. The proxy sends back the response to the mobile client, as fast or as slow as it is capable of, without having a connection to the backend tying up resources. I am fairly sure you can do 4-6 with Squid, and nginx appears to support 1-3 (and looks like fairly unique in this respect). My question is: is there any proxy server that empathizes these buffering and not-opening-connections-until-ready capabilities? Maybe there is just a bit of Apache config-fu that makes this buffering behaviour trivial? Any of them that it is not a dinosaur like Squid and that supports a lean single-process, asynchronous, event-based execution model? (Siderant: I would be using nginx but it doesn't support chunked POST bodies, making it useless for serving stuff to mobile clients. Yes cheap 50$ handsets love chunked POSTs... sigh)

• Commercial Website architecture question

  Hello everyone, I have to write an architecture case study but there are some things that i don't know, so i'd like some pointers on the following : The website must handle 5k simultaneous users. The backend is composed by a commercial software, some webservices, some message queues, and a database. I want to recommend to use Spring for the backend, to deal with the different elements, and to expose some Rest services. I also want to recommend wicket for the front (not the point here). What i don't know is : must i install the front and the back on the same tomcat server or two different ? and i am tempted to put two servers for the front, with a load balancer (no need for session replication in this case). But if i have two front servers, must i have two back servers ? i don't want to create some kind of bottleneck. Based on what i read on this blog a really huge charge is handle by one tomcat only for the first website mentionned. But i cannot find any info on this, so i can't tell if it seems plausible. If you can enlight me, so i can go on in my case study, that would be really helpful. Thanks :)

• Confused about definition of a 'median' when constructing a kd-Tree

  Hi there. Im trying to build a kd-tree for searching through a set of points, but am getting confused about the use of 'median' in the wikipedia article. For ease of use, the wikipedia article states the pseudo-code of kd-tree construction as: function kdtree (list of points pointList, int depth) { if pointList is empty return nil; else { // Select axis based on depth so that axis cycles through all valid values var int axis := depth mod k; // Sort point list and choose median as pivot element select median by axis from pointList; // Create node and construct subtrees var tree_node node; node.location := median; node.leftChild := kdtree(points in pointList before median, depth+1); node.rightChild := kdtree(points in pointList after median, depth+1); return node; } } I'm getting confused about the "select median..." line, simply because I'm not quite sure what is the 'right' way to apply a median here. As far as I know, the median of an odd-sized (sorted) list of numbers is the middle element (aka, for a list of 5 things, element number 3, or index 2 in a standard zero-based array), and the median of an even-sized array is the sum of the two 'middle' elements divided by two (aka, for a list of 6 things, the median is the sum of elements 3 and 4 - or 2 and 3, if zero-indexed - divided by 2.). However, surely that definition does not work here as we are working with a distinct set of points? How then does one choose the correct median for an even-sized list of numbers, especially for a length 2 list? I appreciate any and all help, thanks! -Stephen

I have come across a Windows XP machine that is sending unwanted p2p traffic. I have done a 'netstat -b' command and explorer.exe is sending out the traffic. When I kill this process the traffic stops and obviously Windows Explorer dies. Here is the header of the stream from the Wireshark dump (x.x.x.x) is the machines IP. I have looked in Windows firewall and it shouldn't be letting this traffic through. I have had a look into the messages explorer.exe is sending in Spy++ and the only related ones I can see are socket connections etc... My question is what can I do to look into this deeper? What does malware achieve by sending p2p traffic? I know to fix the problem the easiest way is to reinstall Windows but I want to get to the bottom of it first, just out of interest.

• restrict script inside iframe to run only within pages of same top-level domain?

  I'd like to enforce a requirement that client script inside a page (which in turn is loaded inside an iframe of another page) will only run when the parent page is on the same top-level domain as the framed page (although it may be on another hostname in that domain). Is this do-able? I assume that the easy solution of looking at top.location.host won't be available due to cross-site scripting limitations, but I'm wondering if other javascript hackery could suffice. Constraints on any potential solution inculde: I need to be able to run XmlHttpRequest calls inside the child page, and I need to validate that the hostname is in the same domain before I make those calls. (this makes a document.domain solution challenging because AFAIK setting document.domain disables the ability to make XmlHttpRequest calls. I can control client-side script and HTML on both parent or child (and I can create new pages if needed), but I can't make any server-side code changes. I can't simulate the above via server-side calls or proxies, because the child page's hostname uses a forms auth system with hostname-scoped cookies that I can't get access to from the parent page since it's on a different hostname. I don't have enough control over the child-frame site to be able to put both sites behind the same reverse-proxy or load-balancer (which would enable me to put both sites on the same hostname). I don't actually need to access any UI inside the IFrame-- the iframe is invisible and I'm only using it to run javascript within the security context of a site on a different hostname from the parent page. So at this point I'm stumped. Got any ideas? I want to make sure I'm not overlooking an easy solution before giving up.

• Memory Leak Looping cfmodule inside cffunction

  Hoping someone else can confirm or tell me what I'm doing wrong. I am able to consistently reproduce an OOM running by calling the file oom.cfm (shown below). Using jconsole I am able to see the request consumes memory and never releases it until complete. The issue appears to be calling <cfmodule> inside of <cffunction>, where if I comment out the <cfmodule> call things are garbage collected while the request is running. • Relative Paths in .htaccess, how to attach to a variable?

  I have a very heavy htaccess mod_rewrite file that runs my application. As we sometimes take over legacy websites, I sometimes need to support old urls to old files, where my application processes everything post htaccess. My ultimate goal is to have a 'Demilitarized Zone' for old file structures, and use mod rewrite to check for existence there before pushing to the application. This is pretty easy to do with files, by using: RewriteCond %{IS_SUBREQ} true RewriteRule .* - [L] RewriteCond %{ENV:REDIRECT_STATUS} 200 RewriteRule .* - [L] RewriteCond Public/DMZ/$1 -F [OR] RewriteRule ^(.*)$ Public/DMZ/$1 [QSA,L] This allows pseudo support for relative urls by not hardcoding my base path (I cant assume I will ever be deployed in document root) anywhere and using subrequests to check for file existence. Works fine if you know the file name, ie http://domain.com/path/to/app/legacyfolder/index.html However, my legacy urls are typically http://domain.com/path/to/app/legacyfolder/ Mod_Rewrite will allow me to check for this by using -d, but it needs the complete path to the directory, ie RewriteCond Public/DMZ/$1 -F [OR] RewriteCond /var/www/path/to/app/Public/DMZ/$1 -d RewriteRule ^(.*)$ Public/DMZ/$1 [QSA,L] I want to avoid the hardcoded base path. I can see one possible solutions here, somehow determining my path and attaching it to a variable [E=name:var] and using it in the condition. Any implementation that allows me to existence check a directory is more than welcome.

• XSLT creating a table with varying amount of columns

  Hi, I have a RSS feed i need to display in a table (its clothes from a webshop system). The images in the RSS vary in width and height and I want to make a table that shows them all. First off i would be happy just to show all of the items in 3 columns, but further down the road i need to be able to specify through a parameter the amount of columns in my table. Thr problem seems to be that i need to specify the start tag as well as the end tag of the tr element, and cant get all 3 elements into it, anyone know how to do this?

• Apache/Rails/Passenger directory URLs that don't end in '/' fail to 404.

  I'm using Apache with passenger to run a rails app. In my rails app, I have some static content in subdirectories of the public directory. Each subdirectory has an index.html in it. So, inside the public directory, I have a subdir called 'b' and inside it, is an index.html. So it's like this: /public/b/index.html I have links to these pages, of the form: http://a.com/b If I do this in my regular non-rails web directory, Apache correctly rewrites this URL to be http://a.com/b/ which then, subsequently shows the index.html. It's only when accessing my rails app that it doesn't work. In fact, if I turn off passenger mod... so it just accesses my rails app like a regular document root, it works correctly also. What the heck do I need to do to get this to work properly with passenger? Again, it works fine in apache itself when passenger is not involved. I am running passenger 2.1.3. I have another server running passenger 2.0 that doesn't seem to have this problem, but I don't see anything different in the config other than the different versions of passenger itself. HELP! Been working on this for two days solid with no improvement!

  I am looking to code a file storage application in perl similar to amazon s3. I already have a amazon s3 clone that I found online called parkplace but its in ruby and is old also isn't built for high loads. I am not really sure what modules and programs I should use so id like some help picking them out. My requirements are listed below (yes I know there are lots but I could start simple then add more once I get it going): Easy API implementation for client side apps. (maybe RESTful but extras like mkdir and cp (?) Centralized database server for the USERDB (maybe PostgreSQL (?). Logging of all connections, bandwidth used, well pretty much everything to a centralized server (maybe PostgreSQL again (?). Easy server side configuration (config file(s) stored on the servers). Web based control panel for admin(s) and user(s) to show logs. (could work just running queries from the databases) Fast High Uptime Low memory usage Some sort of load distribution/load balancer (maybe a dns based or pound or perlbal or something else (?).   Hi, I'm currently creating a website for a social project in switzerland. And before there is an overflow of user, I want to prepare the application to scale. I answered by myself many questions but some are left. I explain what I want to do. First at the beginnning, the Application will have only one server (short time) with DNS, PHP, Mysql, Data, and memcache. Second Then I will split them in two DNS, Mysql, memcache Data, PHP Third Here is the problem, I don't know how to do it exactly here to keep the application running well. I could do : Front : Load Balancer, memcache, DNS Web 1 : PHP, DATA Web 2 : PHP, DATA Mysql This would be the scheme, all PHP sessions are kept in the DB. BUT, how do I sync the data? do I run a Rsync to keep them up to date. do I put them on a separate disk (network disk) to be sure ? but in this case, how can I do in case of user uploads ? and if the website gets more success and we have to go on greater structures, would'nt it create some latency on updates ? or would it be a good thing to go directly to amazon's web services ? some infos I use codeigniter as Framework. I use linux as webserver (distribution not chosen now, but should be Debian) Thanks in advance for your answers.

  I have the following code in which the code tries to create a bubble chart with pie charts as the bubbles. As in this version colour themes are used to create a different colour in each pie chart (bulbble) in the function part I have the problem that it works depending on the paths to the colour paletts. Is there an easy way to make the function in a way that it works independently of those paths either by coding a colour for each pie chart segment or by using standardize paths (probably not possible, not preferable). • Checking if a console application is still running using the Process class

  I'm making an application that will monitor the state of another process and restart it when it stops responding, exits, or throws an error. However, I'm having trouble to make it reliably check if the process (Being a C++ Console window) has stopped responding. However, this never triggers the process class recognizing it as 'stopped responding'. I know there are ways to directly query the source server using their own protocol, but i'd like to keep it simple and universal (So that i can maybe use it for different applications in the future).
