    In this article, there is a good overview of exact match domain names and how they affect SEO after Google's Panda update. The last graph shows the Non-com EMD Influence, where it is suggested that a .com tld will perform better than a non-.com one. However, let's consider local search. In the US, .com's work great. However, let's say you're in Canada, and you have a .ca EMD, all with local, Canadian results. Would the expectation be that the .com equivalent still perform better? As a user I would expect the .ca results to be more relevant, and I'm wondering if anyone else has experience with this?

With POD & non-member functions I don't have to make struct members public I can still use object id outside of engine like OpenGL does with all it's stuff, so It's not about encapsulation.     I often try to avoid telling people I'm a programmer because most of the time I end up explaining to them what that really means. When I tell them I'm programming in Java they often ask general questions about the language and how it differs from x and y. I'm also not good at explaining things because 1) I don't have that much experience in the field and 2) I really hate explaining things to non-technical people. They say that you truly understand things once you explain them to someone else, in this case how would you explain OOP terminology and concepts to a non technical person?

    I'm trying to create a dual-boot laptop with Ubuntu 12.04 and some flavor of Windows (TBD). To do that, I need to do some work on partitions & install 12.04. To do that, I need to create a bootable USB that will work with my non-PAE-capable CPU. Someone pointed me to a mini.iso that was allegedly non-PAE-friendly, but it gave me the same error as the straightup 12.04 desktop ISO. What version do I actually need? (This isn't going to be a virtual machine--I don't think the laptop has the RAM to handle that happily--so enabling PAE in the virtual machineware doesn't help me.)

(Never been exposed to programming, data structures, algorithms before) I failed the exam because I studied on my own and didn't know how to use windows non standard libraries like conio.h. (I had to draw circles, etc using get x and get y). I told them but they just don't care. What do I do because for a beginner this is very confusing? Developers are always curious to know the root cause of an exception, even though they found the solution from elsewhere. So what is the reason of this exception (400 Bad Request).The answer is security. Security is an important feature for any application. ASP.NET try to his best to give you more secure application environment as possible. One important security feature is related to URLs. Because there are various ways a hacker can try to access server resource. Therefore it is important to make your application as secure as possible. Fortunately, ASP.NET provides this security by throwing an exception of Bad Request whenever he feels. In this Article I am try to present when ASP.NET feels to throw this exception. You will also see some new ASP.NET 4 features which gives developers some control on this situation.   Description:   http.sys Restrictions:           It is interesting to note that after deploying your application on windows server that runs IIS 6 or higher, the first receptionist of HTTP request is the kernel mode HTTP driver: http.sys. Therefore for completing your request successfully you need to present your validity to http.sys and must pass the http.sys restriction.           Every http request URL must not contain any character from ASCII range of 0x00 to 0x1F, because they are not printable. These characters are invalid because these are invalid URL characters as defined in RFC 2396 of the IETF. But a question may arise that how it is possible to send unprintable character. The answer is that when you send your request from your application in binary format.           Another restriction is on the size of the request. A request containg protocal, server name, headers, query string information and individual headers sent along with the request must not exceed 16KB. Also individual header should not exceed 16KB.           Any individual path segment (the portion of the URL that does not include protocol, server name, and query string, for example, http://a/b/c?d=e,  here the b and c are individual path) must not contain more than 260 characters. Also http.sys disallows URLs that have more than 255 path segments.           If any of the above rules are not follow then you will get 400 Bad Request Exception. The reason for this restriction is due to hack attacks against web servers involve encoding the URL with different character representations.           You can change the default behavior enforced by http.sys using some Registry switches present at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\HTTP\Parameters    ASP.NET Restrictions:           After passing the restrictions enforced by the kernel mode http.sys then the request is handed off to IIS and then to ASP.NET engine and then again request has to pass some restriction from ASP.NET in order to complete it successfully.           ASP.NET only allows URL path lengths to 260 characters(only paths, for example http://a/b/c/d, here path is from a to d). This means that if you have long paths containing 261 characters then you will get the Bad Request exception. This is due to NTFS file-path limit.           Another restriction is that which characters can be used in URL path portion.You can use any characters except some characters because they are called invalid characters in path. Here are some of these invalid character in the path portion of a URL, <,>,*,%,&,:,\,?. For confirming this just right click on your Solution Explorer and Add New Folder and name this File to any of the above character, you will get the message. Files or folders cannot be empty strings nor they contain only '.' or have any of the following characters.....            For checking the above situation i have created a Web Application and put Default.aspx inside A%A folder (created from windows explorer), then navigate to, http://localhost:1234/A%25A/Default.aspx, what i get response from server is the Bad Request exception. The reason is that %25 is the % character which is invalid URL path character in ASP.NET. However you can use these characters in query string.           The reason for these restrictions are due to security, for example with the help of % you can double encode the URL path portion and : is used to get some specific resource from server.   New ASP.NET 4 Features:           It is worth to discuss the new ASP.NET 4 features that provides some control in the hand of developer. Previously we are restricted to 260 characters path length and restricted to not use some of characters, means these characters cannot become the part of the URL path segment.           You can configure maxRequestPathLength and maxQueryStringLength to allow longer or shorter paths and query strings. You can also customize set of invalid character using requestPathInvalidChars, under httpruntime element. This may be the good news for someone who needs to use some above character in their application which was invalid in previous versions. You can find further detail about new ASP.NET features about URL at here           Note that the above new ASP.NET settings will not effect http.sys. This means that you have pass the restriction of http.sys before ASP.NET ever come in to the action. Note also that previous restriction of http.sys is applied on individual path and maxRequestPathLength is applied on the complete path (the portion of the URL that does not include protocol, server name, and query string). For example, if URL is http://a/b/c/d?e=f, then maxRequestPathLength will takes, a/b/c/d, into account while http.sys will take a, b, c individually.   Summary:           Hopefully this will helps you to know how some of initial security features comes in to play, but i also recommend that you should read (at least first chapter called Initial Phases of a Web Request of) Professional ASP.NET 2.0 Security, Membership, and Role Management by Stefan Schackow. This is really a nice book.

  • Shouldn't we count characters of code and comments instead of lines of code and comments? [closed]

    Counting lines of code and comments is sometimes bogus, since most of what we write may be written in one or more lines, depending column count limitations, screen size, style and so forth. Since the commonly used languages (say C, C++, C# and Java) are free-form, wouldn't it be more clever to count characters instead? Edit: I'm not considering LOC-oriented programming where coders try to artificially match requirements by adding irrelevant comments or using multiple lines where less would be enough (or the opposite). I'm interested in better metrics that would be independent of coding style, to be used by honest programmers.

  • Installing a .deb file manually?

    apt-get install gitosis --fix-missing on my Linode still leads to a 404 (Failed to fetch http://ftp.debian.org/debian/pool/main/g/gitosis/gitosis_0.2+20080825-2_all.deb 404 Not Found [IP: 130.89.148.12 80] ) . The correct file location seems to be http://ftp.debian.org/debian/pool/main/g/gitosis/gitosis_0.2+20090917-11_all.deb Is there any way I can install this without apt-get, or point apt-get in the right direction somehow? Several other packages on my Debian Linode also point to 404, both from command line and virtualmin.     We have been handed a set of test sertificates on smart cards for developing a solution that requires XML messages to be signed using PKI. Each (physical) smart card seems to have two certificates stored on it. I import them into the Windows certificate store using software supplied by the smart card provider, and then use code resembling the following to iterate over the installed certificates: foreach (X509Certificate2 x509 in CertStore.Certificates) { foreach (X509Extension extension in x509.Extensions) { if (extension.Oid.Value == "one we are interested in") { X509KeyUsageExtension ext = (X509KeyUsageExtension)extension; if ((ext.KeyUsages & X509KeyUsageFlags.DigitalSignature) != X509KeyUsageFlags.None) { // process certs here We have been told to use the certificates that have the NonRepudiation key usage flag set to sign the XMLs. However, the certificate that has the NonRepudiation flag has this flag only, and not for instance the DigitalSignature flag which I check for above. Does this strike anyone but me as slightly odd? I am in other words told to sign with a certificate that does not (appear to) have the DigitalSignature usage flag set. Is this normal procedure? Any comments? Thanks.

    Hi, Working in IT for 5 years, I focused on system integration - testing, performance tests and analysis, automation etc. Altough I am working for one of the biggest IT companies, I have the possibility to come up with my own ideas and realize them - for example I have written C# (with SQL backend) bugtracker application with management elements...and I really liked it. I am very creative person but being 25 y/o, I am wondering whether it is too late. I understand the logic of programming but as I was never very good in math I assume I have no chance to become professional programmer in this age. What do you think? Thanks

  • [OffTopic] PhD is it worth it?

    So I'll be graduating next year (hopefully) and lately I started thinking about getting a PhD in computer science (to be more precise I was thinking about something related to "distributed systems", don't have any specific topics yet in mind), but is it really worth it? A PhD course here lasts 4 years and is free IF you're doing the "normal one" (which means you have class from monday to friday) OR you have to pay if you want to study on the weekends. So I've been thinking about getting a normal full time job (as a JEE programmer) and doing my PhD during the weekends OR doing the normal PhD course (mon-fri) and getting a part time job as a software dev (the main reason I want a job is simple - I need to eat). That would give me practical working experience and theoretical knowledge+a PhD, but it would also mean working 7days a week from 9 to 5 for 4 years straight (sounds like an overkill). Is it, job wise, really worth getting a PhD? As an employer do you prefer people with PhDs or MScs? This might be kinda important - I'm not from the US or western europe, how are PhDs from other countries (I am graduating one of the best, if not the best, school in my country but it's still a central european country...) seen? Are they useless? I won't hide it - after graduation I am thinking about moving abroad.
