  • How do I capture my second monitor using avconv?

    With this command: avconv -f x11grab -s 2560x1440 -i :0.0 I can stream video from my main monitor. I also have a second, 1080p monitor on which I do my gaming. I want to stream from that monitor. This doesn't work: avconv -f x11grab -s 1920x1080 -i :0.1 I assume I have to use -i :0.0 and somehow specify that it should capture 1920x1080 pixels from X position 2560 and Y position 0. My gaming monitor is placed to the right of my main monitor. Unfortunately the man page for avconv is miles long, so I haven't had any luck figuring this out on my own. I have tried Using -vf with crop like this: -vcodec libx264 ... -vf "crop=$IN_WIDTH:$IN_HEIGHT:2560:360" But that only displayed 1080p video from the top left corner of my main display.

  • Where can I find a list of the highest resolution monitors for sale?

    I am always on the lookout for the latest and greatest monitors, but for some reason, I have never found a good resource for this information. And while we know months in advance what new processor will be released, it doesn't seem like we ever know what new monitors will be released until they are. I am tempted to buy a Dell 3008WFP, but since the 30" 2560x1600 monitors have been out for 6 years, I would expect something better is about to be released. Where can I find out what is available in the high resolution / widescreen market and what is soon to be released?   • Coming from Win XP to 7 and having new accessibility software problems

    I just switched from Windows XP Pro SP3 (32bit) to Windows 7 Ultimate (32bit) on a new PC. Now, both the new onscreen keyboard and a utility for sending mouse clicks are being problematic. The problem with 7's OSK is that some things I type only work intermittently or just dodgily. Like Alt+Tab with multiple Tabs, other Alt/Ctrl/Shift/Win key combinations, and the context menu key. Sometimes apps will not take focus for input at all. I use the OSK it in 'hover' mode, on 0,5 seconds. The clicking tool is Point-N-Click, which sends clicks when I dwell anywhere for 1.25 seconds with the mouse pointer. http://www.polital.com/pnc/ The problem with it is that sometimes it fails to click. Most often this happens in some of the control panel sections, on the taskbar, and when UAC pops up. It seems to occur in conjunction with OSK usage a bit too, I think. I'm using an Administrator account. DEP and UAC settings are default. What can I do to fix or work around either of these problems? I'm disabled so this really is killing usability.

    I want to run a shell script over the weekend, but I wanna make sure if the terminal loses the connection, my script won't be terminated. I use nohup for the whole script invokation, but I also want to execute some portion of my shell script in a way that if someone closes my terminal, my script runs on the background still. Here is a simple example : #!/bin/bash echo "Start the trap" trap " " HUP echo "Sleeping for 60 Seconds" sleep 60 echo "I just woke up!" Please suggest what I should do ? The trap " " HUP seems like not working when I close my terminal tab.

  • Windows 7 Locks Up or Blue Screens after installing additional hard drive

    I've had my home theater pc for over a year now and it's been running with no problems what so ever. I got myself a new Seagate 2 TB hard drive for the holidays and ever since installing it the pc now randomly locks up or blue screens either upon putting it to sleep or waking it from sleep. The only thing I've tried so far is updating the firmware on the hard drive. The hard drive in question is this one (http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=4846365). I do have my minidump file saved off on my home theater pc however right now I'm at work and don't have access to it. Please help! Thank you!

  • Where is the xorg.conf file in Karmic Koala (Ubuntu 9.10) ?

    I am trying to change this xorg.conf file that I used to modify under Ubuntu 9.04, so it can have the higher resolutions of my monitor. Under 9.04, the monitor was unknown, and I had to key in all resolutions in the file, and although it is found under 9.10, 9.10 does not have the highest resolution that My monitor can sustain. How can I change such setting ? Is xorg.conf moved, or replaced ? Merci :-) JF

  • why does my computer crash?

    Hi my computer keeps crashing and I don't know why. At first I thought because I had my cpu over clocked that it all of sudden was crashing. So I set my cpu back to regular speed. This did not help. I then thought it was because 2 sticks of my memory where from a computer that suffered from a power surge. However I just ran the windows memory diagnostic tool( extended) and after like 6 hours of testing my memory it found no errors. So now the only thing that is left is windows 7 64bit. I first over clocked my cpu for a couple months while running XP. Never had a problem. I installed the memory and windows 7 at the same time. But I not sure if it is my memory now since it passed the diagnostic tests. However I am not sure if it is windows 7 either has I installed it twice in the last year. I really don't want to go back to XP to find out if this is the case.   • Problem with blue-sceens

    Hi I have a problem with my computer. I get bluescreens a lot. I get different bluescreen-codes everytime, and this happens randomly. This can happen when I boot my computer, when I'm surfing on the internett, when I'm away from the computer and are logged out... I tried to disconnect everything that was connected to my computer, beside the monitor. That didn't help. I have reinstalled Windows, changed memory, changed video card, but nothing of this helped, I still get bluescreens. I guess the problem here is the mothercard, CPU or HDD. But I want your opinion before I order anything new to my computer. Can you tell me what the problem is?

    I am trying to connect my ASUS VH242H (1920x1020), with my Macbook Pro. The laptop has a 320m nvidia and it should be more than enough to support an external display. I had my old laptop connected, (with a 9600mgt) and it worked fine.I am not mirroring the display I just want an extension ( if possible only the external display diplaying).   • Taking over locked user sessions in XP

    What's the best way to allow an administrator access to a locked user XP session, preferably with a logged event? The goal is to allow admins to cleanly shutdown/save existing work when work needs to be done on the PC. I am aware of the various VNC software flavors, but that only works when the PC is unlocked. Resetting the user password on the DC doesn't work either since the unlock password is cached locally, which means you still have to log the user out and possibly lose work.

  • ATI Radeon 5800 series dual monitor unity not 3D accelerated

    When I had a single monitor setup, without Xinerama, with my current setup of Ubuntu 11.10, ATI 5800 series card, Unity showed transparencies, shadows, etc. (although graphics was reported as 'Standard' in the control/settings panel). Having switched to a dual monitor setup, dell 24" UltraSharp and a smaller Acer monitor, Unity shows only as 2d, even though I'm not loggin in to that display manager. WebGL performance is very sluggish, I'm getting the impression that the processor is doing all the work and the card isn't even accessible even though the drivers are installed (from the ubuntu repository, I did not compile custom drivers). Any tips on how to enable full 3D accelerationn and video card support.   • Does using a tiling window manager make a terminal multiplexer obsolete?

    Since about half a year I have been enjoying a terminal multiplexer (tmux, to whomever it may concern), and have grown to like it. I would like to try a tiling WM as opposed to a stacked one some time in the future but cannot wrap my head around this simple question: Why would one use the splits in a multiplexer within a tiling WM? Is there an upside, besides of course the single instance you'd be running?

  • Is it possible to have zsh+keychain+tmux not ask for keys?

    I'm using tmux and zsh, and I've recently been learning about ssh-agent and keychain. From the manpage for zsh, it says that it will source .zlogin only if the shell is, well, a login shell. Following advice I read, I stuck keychain --clear in my .zlogin, which worked perfectly. When I logged into the box I had to unlock my key. However, each time I create a new window in tmux, it clears/makes me re-add my key. This is a little annoying... but I can understand it if, in fact, each new tmux window is a login window. I haven't been able to find much help outside of the manpages on this topic. So is each new tmux window a login shell, or is there any way that I can make it not clear my keys only when I create a tmux window?

  • Camtasia on remote computer?

    I have a need to use one laptop for a live presentation (with projector, etc.), but record that presentation on another laptop -- similar to what I can do with Camtasia, only with the recording happening on another laptop. Is this possible? What do I need to do this? Some VGA device that goes between the presenting machine and the projector? Some USB device? My ideal requirements: The machines must be "standard" laptops (so I can't just add a new card to a desktop, etc.). I prefer a hardware solution, but cannot involve studio type equipment. I'd prefer not to install Camtasia (or similar) on the presenting machine for two reasons: licensing issues performance issues (sometimes the presentations are machine intensive and I don't want the recording software to interfere with the presentation) I'd appreciate any tips.     The title says it all. Is there a way to make the loginwindow process start a user session by running a command when remotely logged in via SSH as an admin on Mac OS X? When the machine is at the login window (no user is currently logged in), I want it to open up a user's session as if I had clicked on the username and entered a password. Solutions that don't involve scripting the GUI are highly preferred, but this Apple KB page may be of interest for those who go that route.

    I have Windows 8 (final, MSDN) on my Macbook Pro Retina. Windows 8's ongoing, continuous tantrum of insisting that it's on a tablet device is causing it to always have a touch keyboard 'icon' on the taskbar. The 'icon' is actually a toolbar and I can temporarily disable it by right clicking the taskbar and DE-selecting it. However, upon rebooting the system, it always insists on coming back and activating itself. How can I permanently disable the touch keyboard toolbar in the taskbar?

    Can anybody recommend a linux compatible touchscreen monitor, the criteria are: 19inch or greater 1920x1080 or better only single touch required be able to operate in portait mode We currently have some IIyama Prolite MTS2250MS monitors but these do not natively support portait mode and we have had little success getting the touch functionality working in Linux (although they do report themselves as HID devices when plugged in). So an alternative to suggesting a monitor would be pointers to information on how we could get the IIyama monitor working in Linux.

    Pre-Snow Leopard, I could use the following command: defaults write com.apple.loginwindow Finder /Applications/My-replacement-app-such-as-Terminal.app Which would a.) replace the Finder launching at login with an application of my choice, and b.) cause that application to launch instead of Finder when all other applications are quit. Is it possible to do this in Snow Leopard, or has this behavior been deprecated? (I don't want to disable Finder altogether, I just don't want it to start at login.)

    I want a piece of software that will constantly record what I'm doing on my desktop, discarding footage that's over [30] seconds old. Its recording would be a rolling one. The idea is that I can somehow hit a button and see "what just happened". I don't want to have to babysit it. That is, I don't want a piece of software designed for screencasting (which I'm not trying to do). My bias against that is based on my (maybe incorrect?) assumption that I'd regularly have to start/stop the recording throughout the day. The idea is that this piece of software would consume fewer resources (than a screencast recorder) on my box, as it's only keeping a very limited amount of footage in memory (and low quality would even be acceptable), because it's discarding frames fairly quickly after they're captured. Where can I find a piece of software with features like this?

  • windows 7 monitor instantly resumes from power off

    It seems that some service or program is preventing my monitor from going into power save mode but I cannot find a way to dig down the cause. Does anybody know a way to find out which event may be causing the problem? Background information: If I leave/lock my computer I want to immediately power off the monitor. Stupid windows has no program for this so I use a third party utility. I use Display.exe from Noel Danjou since 2005 and have had no problem with it on XP, my Notebook with w7 x64 pro and at the office with w7 x64 enterprise. With my new home pc with w7 x64 pro the monitor goes off but instantly comes back on after a second. So I tested using a power plan with the shortest timeout of 1 minute but with that the display never goes off at all. (Setting a power plan timeout is no useful option because then I cannot read a document or watch a movie without the monitor going off) I could try trial and error methods but this is cumbersome and not what I regard as a professional solution. So I would prefer a way to analyze the windows events to find out the reason for the display staying active. Add On: In the meantime I tried safe mode and also exited from all tray programs but the problem is still there. I also checked the BIOS for special power settings but still no solution (P.S. Mobo is H87-G41 PC Mate with latest BIOS rev.)
