  One of most demanding tasks for any programmer, architect is understanding other's code. E.g. I am contractor, hired to rescue some project very quickly. Fix bugs, plan global refactoring and therefore I need most efficient way to understand the code. What is the list of concepts, their priority and best tools for this? Of what I know: reverse code engineering to create object models (creating of diagram per package is not so convenient), create sequence diagrams (the tool connects in debug mode to the system and generates diagrams from runtime). Some visualizing techniques, using some tools to work not just with .java but also with e.g. JPA implementors like Hibernate. Generate diagram for not all the codebase, but add some class and then classes used by it. Is Sparx Enterprise Architect state of the art in reverse engineering or far from that. Any other better tools? Ideally would be that tool makes me understand the code as if I wrote it myself :)

  I need to generate unique and consecutive numbers (for use on an invoice), in a fast and reliable way. currently use a Oracle sequence, but in some cases generated numbers are not consecutive because of exceptions that may occur. I thought a couple of solutions to manage this problem, but neither of they convincing me. What solution do you recommend? Use a select max () SELECT MAX (NVL (doc_num, 0)) +1 FROM invoices Use a table to store the last number generated for the invoice.   hi there, I have developed a windows application using C# VS 2008 and Sql 2005 express, i have testes the application on my machine and it works fine, my machine is win32 bit, when i tried the application on windows 64bit it keeps giving me an error message on the start of the application,although i installed the sql express on that machine but should i install .NETframwork3.5sp1 64 bit also? , the target machine is widows 7 64bit, also is there a technology or a way to make the application work in the following sequence: 1- the CD is auto run 2- the setup checks for the installed prerequists and install any necessery one without the interference of the user. one last question,should i rebuild the application on an 64 bit machine to make it work on 64 bit machine? thankx

• UrlRewriter.Net with URL with final dot

  I want to use UrlRewriter.Net as described in this blog by ScottGu. In the example below, page.aspx should display a page text stored in the database based on the title= URL parameter. After a couple of tweaks the only remaining issue seems to be that a final dot in the URL causes a 404 a sequence of two dots in the URL causes a 400 Windows 7, IIS 7 with Integrated AppPool, VS2008. Looking at the Failed Request Log, it seems that the UrlRewriter module is called after retrieving the request handler. Can these two issues be fixed, or is there a better replacement for UrlRewriter? (A related question only asks about the 404) Edit: This behavior can even be reproduced on SO, so maybe there is no work-around?

  Suppose you have two sets of conceptual entities: MarketPriceDataSet which has multiple ForwardPriceEntries PoolPriceForecastDataSet which has multiple PoolPriceForecastEntry Both different child objects have near identical fields: ForwardPriceEntry has MarketPriceDataSetId (foreign key to parent table) StartDate EndDate SimulationItemId ForwardPrice PoolPriceForecastEntry has PoolPriceForecastDataSetId (foreign key to parent table) StartDate EndDate SimulationItemId ForecastPoolPrice If I modelled them as separate tables, the only difference would be the foreign key, and the name of the price field. There has been a debate as to whether the two near identical tables should be merged into one. Options I've thought of to model this is: Just keep them as two independent, separate tables Have both sets in the one table with an additional "type" field, and a parent_id equalling a foreign key to either parent table. This would sacrifice referential integrity checks. Have both sets in the one table with an additional "type" field, and create a complicated sequence of joining tables to maintain referential integrity. What do you think I should do, and why?

• DbMetal chokes on repeated foreign key references in SQLite - any ideas?

  I've been struggling to get DbMetal to process my SQLite database. I finally isolated the problem. It won't allow a table to have two foreign key references to the same column. For example, a SQLite database with these two tables will fail: CREATE TABLE Person ( Id INTEGER PRIMARY KEY, Name TEXT NOT NULL ); CREATE TABLE Match ( Id INTEGER PRIMARY KEY, WinnerPersonId INTEGER NOT NULL REFERENCES Person(Id), LoserPersonId INTEGER NOT NULL REFERENCES Person(Id) ); I get this error: DbMetal: Sequence contains more than one matching element If I get rid of the second foreign key reference, no error occurs. So, this works: CREATE TABLE Match ( Id INTEGER PRIMARY KEY, WinnerPersonId INTEGER NOT NULL REFERENCES Person(Id), LoserPersonId INTEGER NOT NULL ); But I really need both "person" columns to reference the person table. I submitted a bug report for this, but I could use a workaround in the meantime. Any ideas?

  I have Muttiple sequence alignment (clustal) file and i want to read this file and arrange sequences in a such a way that in looks more clear and precise in order. I am doing this from biopython using AlignIO object. • MySQL locking problem

  I have a simple setup of a set of writers and a set of readers working with a MySQL ISAM table. The writers are only inserting rows while the readers are only checking for new rows. OK, so I know that I don't need a lock in this situation, since I'm not modifying existing rows. However my Writers are accessing one more table that does need a lock. I piece of information seems irrelevant except for the following limitation stated in the MySQL documentation: A session that requires locks must acquire all the locks that it needs in a single LOCK TABLES statement. While the locks thus obtained are held, the session can access only the locked tables. For example, in the following sequence of statements, an error occurs for the attempt to access t2 because it was not locked in the LOCK TABLES statement: So to access the table I want to insert rows into, I NEED to lock it, which is causing me performance problems. Any suggestions of how to get around this?

  Why do the following URLs give me the IIS errors below: A) http://192.168.1.96/cms/View.aspx/Show/Small+test' A2) http://192.168.1.96/cms/View.aspx/Show/Small%20test' <-- this works, but is not the result from HttpUtility.UrlEncode() B) http://192.168.1.96/cms/View.aspx/Show/'%26$%23funky**!!~''+page Error for A: HTTP Error 404.11 - Not Found The request filtering module is configured to deny a request that contains a double escape sequence. Error for B: HTTP Error 400.0 - Bad Request ASP.NET detected invalid characters in the URL. The last part of the URL after /Show/ is the result after the text is being sent through HttpUtility.UrlEncode() so, according to Microsoft it is URL Encoded correctly. If I user HttpUtility.UrlPathEncode() rather than HttpUtility.UrlEncode() I get the A2 results. But B ends up looking like: http://192.168.1.96/TVCMS-CVJZ/cms/View.aspx/Show/'&$#funky**!!~''%20page which is still wrong. Does Microsoft know how to URL Encode at all? Is there a function someone has written up to do it the correct way?

My id is generated using an UUID. an i want to retrieve this id, wich is given as a parameter to a mocked object. • CORE DATA objectId changes constantly

  Hello, I have some data that I export into an XML file and put in a remote FTP Server. I have to identified each object with a unique attribute, it doesn't matter wich is, but must be persistent always = it can never change. I don't want to create a unique attribute, sequence, serial, etc. I'm using the objectID but every time I use it a get a new reference. I know that before the object has been saved, it has a 'temporal id', but once it's saved, it gets the definitive. I'm not seeing this, never. • JTextField that has inner fields or preformated format, something like the ip field in windows

  Hello guys, i want to create a text field that will be for date and will have dd.mm.YYYY format. Now what i want to do is the user to type only the numbers, not the dots to. So the field would be like: _ _. _ _ . _ _ _ _ So when the user wants to type the date: 15.05.2010 for example, he will only type the numbers in the sequence 15052010. Also i would like, when he preses on left or right arrow, the cursor to go from one field(not JTextField, but field in the JTextField). So lets say i have JTextField with text in it: 15.05.2010, so if user is on the beginning and he preses right arrow, the cursor to go to the .05 field. I hope you understand me 'cos right now i don't any idea how to make this, or at least how to look for it on google. Thank you.

I assume that this is the reason for the latter error that I don't have a database configuration.   I'm trying to create Ranking that shows the sequence of agreements for the two fields Customers and Agreements. The number for agreements must be unique, whereas customers can repeat. The formula RankOfDup: (SELECT Count(*) FROM Data a WHERE a.customer=Data.customer And a.agreement >= Data.agreement) Works beautifully but after this query with columns Agreement, Customer and RankofDup, I need to create crosstab that transposes the RankofDub. It works when I make the table first and then create query but my data is too large so I'm trying to put the select query with the ranking in a crosstab query. However, when I try to do this Access gives error message that microsoft jet ... doesn't recognise Data.customer? Any ideas how I can fix this?

Now, how do I use this file to generate XML files?
