• Transferring data from Advantage Database Server to SQL Server

  My client is using Advantage Database Server and wants to move to SQL Server but obviously wants to move all his clients data as part of the upgrade over to SQL Server. I've thought about writing an app to do the transfer but thinking it might be more trouble than its worth. What would you recommend?

  I'm having trouble with a LINQ to SQL query getting the min value using Visual Basic. Here's the SQL: SELECT RC.AssetID, MIN(RC.RecCode) AS RecCode, JA.EngineerNote from JobAssetRecCode RC JOIN JobAssets JA ON JA.AssetID = RC.AssetID AND JA.JobID = RC.JobID WHERE RC.InspState = 2 AND RC.RecCode > 0 AND RC.JobID = @JobID GROUP BY RC.AssetID, JA.EngineerNote; I seem to be going around in circles here with grouping etc not managing to get it working. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

• SQL Server 2008 R2 CTP Installer crashes instantly after starting it

  Hi, I'm trying to update my existing SQL server 2008 SP1 installation with SQL Server 2008 R2 (November CTP). I started the setup and chose the upgrade option and after some time the installer told me to reboot. As soon as I confirmed with OK, it crashed. After rebooting I can't even run the setup file anymore. it crashes instantly without an error message. What's the recommended way of troubleshooting this? Thanks, Adrian

  I'm trying to migrate a MySQL DB to SQL Server using MS's SQL Server Import Export Wizard. It isn't going so well... The wizard either tells me that the MySQL syntax is invalid or crashes depending on its mood. Here is the query that it executes against MySQL before failing: select * from "_account" Anyway to change so either MySQL likes the quotes or the wizard doesn't use them?

  I created a SDF (SQL CE) database with Visual Studio 2008 (Add / New Item / Local Database). Is it possible to edit this database with SQL Server Management Studio? I tried to attach it but it only offered .mdf and attaching a .sdf file results in "failed to retrieve data for this request". If so, is it possible to create SDF files with Management Studio as well? Or are we stuck with the simple interface of the Visual Studio 2008 database manager?

  Our application tends to be running very slow recently. On debugging and tracing found out that the process is showing high cpu cycles and SQL Server shows high I/O activity. Can you please guide as to how it can be optimised? The application is now about an year old and the database file sizes are not very big or anything. The database is set to auto shrink.   I'm developing Reporting services on VS2005 and have to connect to SQL Server 2008. The following Error occurs: "This server version is not supported. You must have Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Beta 2 or later." I found on the net a patch for it, but it doesn't work (link to patch) "The upgrade patch cannot be installed by the Windows Installer Service because the program to be upgraded is missing, or the upgrade patch may update a different version of the program." what else can I do ? :(

  I work with a team that has a sharepoint site currently runnning and its lists are linked to an access DB. My question is really on the investment level, what would be the reasons to upgrade DB to sharepoint if only a few 100 users access this site. Is there a real benefit to replacing the DB with a version of SQL Server, escpecially if about to replace Access 2002 with 2007 some day. I know SQL Server can handle more memory and traffic for more users, but I'm looking for more reasons than that if there are any.
