• What tech stack/platform to use for a project?

  Hey guys, This is a bit of a weird meta-programming question, but I've realized that my new project doesn't need a full MVC framework, and being a rails guy, I'm not sure what to use now. To give you a gist of the necessary functionality; this website will display static pages, but users will be able to log in and 'edit their current plans'. All purchasing and credit card editing is being handled by a recurring payment subscriber, I just need a page to edit their current plan. All of that will be done through (dynamic) XML API calls, so no database is necessary. Should I stick with my typical rails/nginx stack, or is there something I could use that would lighten the load, since I don't need the Rails heft. I'm familiar with python and PHP but would prefer not to go that route. Is Sinatra a good choice here? tl;dr: What's a good way to quickly serve mostly static pages, preferably in Ruby, with some pages requiring dynamic XML rendering?

  I have a question about memory management when using the addObjectsFromArray method. Basically, I have 2 arrays defined in the appDelegate. I need these 2 arrays for the duration of my application's runtime. I therefore release them in my appDelegate's dealloc method. When I go to use these two arrays in a class, I want one array to store the values from the other, so that the other can have it's contents removed, but still stick around for use. Something like this: [appDelegate.arrayTwo addObjectsFromArray:appDelegate.arrayOne]; [appDelegate.arrayOne removeAllObjects]; I'm getting the compiler error: EXC_BAD_ACCESS because of a pointer issue? retaining issue? • Accessing ArrayBuffer from PHP $_POST after xmlHTTPrequest send()

  I'm following the tuitions on XMLHttpRequest 2 from : https://developer.mozilla.org/en/DOM/XMLHttpRequest/Sending_and_Receiving_Binary_Data and http://www.html5rocks.com/en/tutorials/file/xhr2/#toc-send-arraybuffer They're great tutorials for the client side, and here is a working extract from my script: var imagebuffer = new ArrayBuffer(size); // create the readonly memory buffer var imagedata= new Uint8Array(imagebuffer); // create a view to manipulate data // do some cool stuff with imagedata var exchange=new XMLHttpRequest(); exchange.open("POST",url,true); exchange.send(arraybuffer); So far so good, and I can see from the both client and server control panels that plenty of data is being transferred. Here's my problem: how do I access the ArrayBuffer with PHP at the server? I'm used to the $_POST superglobal wanting parameters passing from a HTML form so it can be accessed as an array but I can't find any reference for how to access this binary array and stick it in my MySQL database.

  Hello, I am totally a novice in Multi-Core Programming, but I do know how to program C++. Now, I am looking around for Multi-Core Programming library. I just want to give it a try, just for fun, and right now, I found 3 APIs, but I am not sure which one should I stick with. Right now, I see Boost's MPI, OpenMP and TBB. For anyone who have experienced with any of these 3 API (or any other API), could you please tell me the difference between these? Are there any factor to consider, like AMD or Intel architecture?

• Best approach for a scalable PHP (AJAX based) chat system

  Hi, I'm building a chat system for a company and I'm wondering as to what the best way to build the system would be? The current setup we have is a Nginx HTTP Server with PHP and Memcacheq (as a message queue that appends the chat messages to the user's own queue). We then poll the Nginx server (through a Comet style request) and query the message queue for updates. Is it a good idea to use a message queue such as Memcacheq to handle a chat system that has both user-to-user and site-wide chat or is it best to just stick to MySQL? Thanks!

  Hello, I want to create a footer like facebook, that sticks at the bottom of the page, irrespective of the scroll. <div id="footer"></div> and here is the css style #footer{ position:absolute; left:0px; margin-bottom:0px; vertical-align:bottom; bottom:0px; width:100%; height:25px; background-color:#dfd5d7; overflow:hidden; } It comes fine, when I resize the browser window it does not stick to the bottom but a about 50 pixels up. • Multiple classes in a Python module

  I'm very new to Python (I'm coming from a JAVA background) and I'm wondering if anyone could help me with some of the Python standards. Is it a normal or "proper" practice to put multiple class in a module? I have been working with Django and started with the tutorials and they place their database model classes in the same module. Is this something that is normally done or should I stick with 1 class per module? Is their a reason I would do one over the other? Hope I'm being clear and not to generic. • Pressing "Home" in Vim on an Indented Line

  I have a bad habit of using the 'home' key to go back to the beginning of a line. As I recently started using vim (and loving it!) I noticed that when I press the home key on a lined that is indented, it returns me to the very beginning of the line. In Notepad++ (the editor I used to use) it would return me to the beginning of the code on that line, right after the indent. Is there some way to replicate this behavior in vim? Usually, when I'm pressing home it's in the Insert mode for me to (usually) stick a variable there. I have set smartindent in my vimrc, with set noautoindent as a "tips" page told me to make sure to disable autoindent (although it didn't seem to be enabled in the first place - perhaps that option is extraneous.) • WPF DataGrid Vs Windows Forms DataGridView

  I have experience in WPF and Windows Forms, however have only used the Windows Forms DataGridView and not the WPF DataGrid (which was only included in .Net 4 or could be added to .Net 3.5 from Codeplex, I understand). I am about to devlop an app using one of these controls heavily for large amounts of data and have read performance is an issue with the WPF DataGrid so I may stick to the Windows Forms DataGridView.. Is this the case? I do not want to use a 3rd party control. Does the Windows Forms DataGridView offer significant performance over the WPF DataGrid for large amounts of data? If I were to use WPF I would prefer to use .Net 3.5S SP1, unless the DataGrid in the .Net 4 is significantly better? Also I want to use ADO with DataTable's which I feel is better suited to Windows Forms..

• Control Philips Living Colors using PC

  Hi guys, is there a way (hardware/software-combination) that I can use to control one or more "Philips Living Colors" lamps using a PC - e.g. a USB-stick that acts as the "remote". This way i could control the lamp through software (e.g. a web-app - over iPhone / remotely) or even create what Philips builds into some of their TVs and calls "ambilight" (graphics driver detecting the main color to control the lamp). I guess this is more like a hardware than a software question - but I couldn't find anything about this online and I'm sure not to be the first to have come up with this idea right when I unpacked my LivingColors lamp yesterday ;) Any idea/hint is appreciated. -chris

• Do you use Scimore SQL database ?

  There's a database engine that looks amazing for a free tool and that is Scimore. Have you had much experience with it? If so, how does it rate..particularly against Firebird? How resilient/self reliant is it? (Meaning how much downtime/maintenance is expected?) The scale out capabilities also look very interesting. I just downloaded it and have been playing around and so far it looks good. I had been looking for an easy to deploy single-user type embedded database (which Scimore has an option) and was toying with MS SQL Compact Edition and SQLite and remembered this database from a trial a few years ago. (Windows platform) I was about ready to settle in on SQLite but started thinking about other projects which are multi-user and wanted to stick with a single solution...which is why I started looking at Firebird as well.

Now, in learning various imperative/OO languages (like C, Java, PHP), excercises have been a good way for me to go. But since I don't really know what Haskell is capable of and because there are many new concepts to utilize, I haven't known where to start. So, how did you learn Haskell? • ASP.Net: Finding the cause of OutOfMemoryExpcetions

  I trying to track down the cause of an OutOfMemory for a website. This site has ~12,000 .aspx pages and the last time it crashed I captured a memory dump using adplus. After some investigation I found a lot of heap fragmentation, there are around 100MB of Free blocks which can't be assigned. Digging deeper one of the Large Object Heaps is fragmented and the causes seems to be String interning as described [here][1] Could this be caused by the number of pages in the site? As they are all compiled they sit in memory and by looking at the dump they are interned and PINNED which I think means they stick around for a while. I would find this odd as there are many sites with more pages, but dynamic compilation could account for the growth in memory. What other methods are there for finding the cause of the memory leak?   We initially didn't use any logging or debug tracing but after spending few weeks to trace down some data corruption we decided to put required Debug.Write and Trace for production and Debug.Assert So now question is What is the best practice to use debug and trace logging. I am just looking for some thing generic. public void AddRectodatabase(object record) { Debug.WriteLine(record.ToString()); Trace.WriteLine(record.ToString()); // Add it to databse Debug.Assert(true, "Use this on case by case basis"); } Is this good enough for general purpose, am i doing anything wrong in there? We want to stick with .net System.Diagnostics over other alternatives like log4net. Is there any thing else useful in System.Diagnostics?

• Is it Me or Are Rails and Django Difficult to Install on Windows?

  I tried getting these frameworks working on Windows Vista for a couple of days but to no avail. Every single time I thought I had them working I would get some random error involving the PostgreSQL or MySQL setup, or the paths were screwed up or some other command line error "not recognized as an internal or external command" (or something). Someone told me that these frameworks are a lot easier to get running on Ubuntu but I really don't want to make that switch as everything I have is on Windows. Are these common problems when trying to get running on Windows? I think I'll just stick with C# and .NET as everything seems to work pretty nicely together with none of this "install-twenty-different-components" stuff and see if they work together. Is Instant Django advisable to use?

  Hi there, I want to save data to my Sony Ericsson K750i. I know the phone implements FileConnection version 1.0. The list of roots taken from FileSystemRegistry.listRoots(); returns single element named "c:/". I want to save a file.txt just about anywhere, but preferably to the memory stick attached. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to work. It throws an IOException without any message. I tried opening the fileconnection on numerous roots like c:/, C:/, /, ./, root1/, SDCard/, CFCard/, MemoryStick/ and perhaps some more but without any luck. The exception is thrown right after this line for any of those roots: FileConnection filecon = (FileConnection) Connector.open("file:///MemoryStick/file.txt"); Please, what URL should i use?

• Is the JavaScript RegExp implicit method deprecated?

  So everyone knows what I mean by "implicit methods"? They're like those default properties from the Windows COM days of yore, where you could type something like val = obj(arguments) and it would be interpreted as val = obj.defaultMethod(arguments) I just found out JavaScript has the same thing: the default method of a RegExp object appears to be 'exec', as in /(\w{4})/('yip jump man')[1] ==> jump This even works when the RegExp object is assigned to a variable, and even when it's created with the RegExp constructor, instead of /.../, which is good news to us fans of referential transparency. Where is this documented, and/or is it deprecated?

• Did anyone see the spasticNav.js Menu for jQuery ?

The plugin takes a static state of the tag UL – and run the plugin on it. which mean that if i move the “currentPageItem” from the first LI tag and give it to the next LI tag – the spasticNav doesn’t run for each object again. it still “remembers” the old state. ( because the .js file run only once at the top of the page ) So what should I add to the code in order to get dynamic “Click” event ? ( without reloading the whole page [ ajax ] ) Does anyone have any ideas about this specific plugin ? Thanks.

  Hello, I'm trying to make a small program that could intercept the open process of a file. The purpose is when an user double-click on a file in a given folder, windows would inform to the software, then it process that petition and return windows the data of the file. Maybe there would be another solution like monitoring Open messages and force Windows to wait while the program prepare the contents of the file. One application of this concept, could be to manage desencryption of a file in a transparent way to the user. In this context, the encrypted file would be on the disk and when the user open it ( with double-click on it or with some application such as notepad ), the background process would intercept that open event, desencrypt the file and give the contents of that file to the asking application. It's a little bit strange concept, it could be like "Man In The Middle" network concept, but with files instead of network packets. Thanks for reading.

• In a web app, is it wise to give log files ".txt" suffix?

  I am building a logging mechanism in a web application. Being a Windows man, I tend to give files with textual content the .txt ending. The suffix is automatically registered to be opened in a text editor in any Windows environment, and is just a nice convention. The app is going to be redistributed, and running mostly on Linux, though. The Linux convention for log files is .log. Is there any good reason on the Linux end, besides convention, why I should use .log? Any filters, real-life applications that could become relevant and that will work only with a .log suffix? Or can I merrily call it error_log.txt?

If I replace every occurrence of boost::tuple by std::tuple, it compiles fine. Is there a problem in boost tuple implementation ? Or is this a gcc bug ? I must stick with Boost.Tuple for now. • How do I prove to a client/advertiser that my site's analytics numbers are what I say they are?

  I have been asked to provide recommendations on "Verified Analytics" for the next iteration of my company's site. Verified to mean that when we sell ad space, it's based on a number of page-views, and the people who buy that space want a way to verify that the numbers we give them are the actual numbers we're delivering. I have turned to The Google and the only services I can find for this sort of thing revolve around Google Analytics and the sale of a domain name. I export my analytics numbers to a PDF, have Google email the PDF to my auctioneer, and they look for signs of tampering. If no signs of tampering are found they put a little "Verified" badge on the domain auction. (Here) Other than this, and something similar on another domain sales site, I haven't found anything like what I've been asked to find. Currently we are using Google Analytics, however I've been also asked to recommend a replacement for that based on the ability to be verified. I'd rather just stick with Google Analytics since we also use Google for advertising.

So, can I embed video (without flash and any player controls) in page? Can I decode video with transparent background? Is there any codecs which support transparent background (alpha-channel)?
