• KB980408: Fix for Explorer freezing: does anyone know what apps cause it?

  Microsoft released an update for Windows 7 today: KB980408: The April 2010 stability and reliability update for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 is available. The update fixes, among other things: Windows Explorer may stop responding for 30 seconds when a file or a directory is created or renamed after certain applications are installed. i'm not experiencing it on my own Windows 7 machine, but two colleagues at work were experiencing the problem. i would really like to know what applications were causing problems. Microsoft will never call out the misbehaving applications. i want to know what software i should be ridiculing and insulting. And avoid in the future. Did anyone who was experiencing this problem isolate the applications?

  I have a DNS server set up on one of my machines using BIND 9.7 Everything works fine with it. On my Windows 7 desktop, I have statically-assigned all network values. I have one DNS server set -- my DNS server. On my desktop, I can ping a third machine by IP fine. I can nslookup the hostname of the third machine fine. • Invalid printer specified

  The error is that when a batch (about 15) of similar 1 page documents are sent to the printer from the server some of them (last time it was 5) fail with the message ‘Invalid printer specified’ and the others work fine. The same document sent 1 second later will work fine. We are using. • Roadsync Multiple Exchange Accounts configuration

  I am right now trialing the Roadsync application on my S60 3rd edition mobile. The documentation states that it allows multiple exchange accounts to be configured and that we could switch between the those accounts from the configuration. However, it doesn't specify how to do that and I am unable to figure that out too. Do any of you have a solution?

• mkisofs creating iso file with no error or warning but iso corrupted

  I'm trying to make a dvd from mpeg2 files. First of all i'm on windows 7. I'm using the following binaries: jpeg2yuv mpeg2enc mplex spumux dvdauthor Now everything is fine till this point absolutely no errors, but then i'm using mkisofs to make the iso file also no errors or warnings. It creates the iso file but i cannot burn it to dvd it said: The selected disk image file isn't valid. I tried it on a Mac osx as well and there the iso is worked fine. It is an NTSC iso. I'm totaly stuck with this problem any help is really appreciated.

• New Computer Build Questions

  I'm in the process of gathering parts and specs for a new machine. I wear many hats, so the machine needs to do a lot. I need at least 2 monitor support, if not three. I also play many online MMOs (wow, aion, war hammer, etc), along with some freelance programming projects. I already have a case which is very large, so it will fit anything. I have 2 other SATA HDs. They are more for storage and basic programs. I feel that the best improvement could be done with a solid state HD, true or not? I'm more of a software/programming guy, so ANY input at all on improving this system build would be appreciated. I have a few questions with this list. AMD or Intel? I don't know enough about either to choose what would best fit me. Thanks! **EDIT: Thanks for the input everyone! Here are some answers: I do a lot of programming and gaming, so I do need things for both. The newer video card covers the gaming aspect, as well as allowing me to have many monitors. (hopefully upgrade to dual 30' or more) I don't need any additional HDs at this time. I have a SATA 160g and 120g from my previous computer, and a NAS system with over 2TB of storage on the homenetwork. I just wanted a fast HD for OS/programs/games. With the memory. I have used G.SKILL before in 2 system builds. It's done excellent for me in them. Very stable. **EDIT2: Made some additional changes. Lowered the power supply down to 750, which saves me more $$. • Simple image editor to select area of image as wallpaper

  I've spent way to many hours looking for software to do the following simple task, so now I'll ask. I need software that will open an image and put a 'crop box' on it. You can set the 'crop box' to standard screen resolutions (1024x768) or define a custom one. You can move the 'crop box' around on the image to select the area you want. You can re-size the 'crop box' (selecting a corner and dragging w/mouse) and it maintains the correct aspect ratio. You can save the area in the 'crop box' to use as the Windows background. (The software doesn't need to set it as the background, I can do that myself in Windows XP.) The free software sites (CNET.com, etc.) have lots of image editing software that do things much more complicated than this simple task. I've spent too many hours downloading them to see if they will do this particular task. The ones I've tried would require manual trial and error to get the part of an image that I want saved as an image, with the correct aspect ratio so Windows doesn't screw with it (stretch, tile, crop) when I select it as the wallpaper.

  Hello. I'm trying to setup vsftpd on Fedora 12. I need to require use of FTPS, and for now need to use a self-signed SSL certificate. I managed to get the vsftpd service running and to connect as my user. I can list the home directory, but as soon as I try to list another directory, download or upload a file, I get this error: No available certificate or key corresponds to the SSL cipher suites which are enabled. And the xfer log is empty. I've been Googling it for a while now, but still can't understand the problem. Here's how I installed vsftpd: su yum install vsftpd chkconfig vsftpd on service vsftpd start I tried to generate the certificate in two ways. • Intel Core i7 clockspeeds

  I've got an Intel i7 3770 CPU and am generally quite happy about it. However when I am just browsing around without programs running in background it seems to underclock itself quite a lot. This is not a real issue, however there seems to be a small hiccup (0.1s maybe) when it clocks itself higher again. Does anyone have a similar issue? Can I change the thresholds that are being used to change the clocks? I absolutely like that it underclocks the CPU whenever I am not around, but it shouldn't start to annoy me. It might also be related to Windows 8.1, but I am not sure about that, just saying that it's a possibility. I ran LatencyMon as suggested and got this (worrying?) result:

• opening socket to google hangs on SYN_SENT

  I have 2 computers now: downloader (asus at4nm10t-i) with debian and desktop (asus sabertooth 990fx) with gentoo in the same network under NAT even with the same ethernet card: RTL8111E. driver r8169 is compiled as module on both computers. Sometimes in evenings desktop cannot connect to google and all its services like now: curl -v http://www.google.by on downloader it received server's answer immediately. on desktop it hanged and when I ran in other terminal: netstat -ntp | grep curl >>tcp 0 1 192.168.0.7:54126 173.194.35.191:80 SYN_SENT 4876/curl after 1-2 minutes it received server's answer. I was tried to change ip of network, mac address of desktop but nothing changed. When I was trying to connect to another services except google: curl -v http://www.yahoo.com both computers received answers immediately! Only when I rebooted desktop it begins to work with google services correctly I cant understand what is this bug related to. In which bugtracker should I post this: r8169 or linux kernel or google? PS. Desktop was checked with memtest: 5 passes - no errors

• Time Machine + Ubee Router?

  I can't for the life of me figure this out. I recently had TWC installed in my house, and wanted to disable the NAT and router functions of it. I have a Time Machine hooked up to it from LAN1 (on the Ubee) to the WAN port on the TM. The problems started occurring here. I figured the settings would be these: Ubee Configuration mode: Bridge DHCP: Off TM IPv4: 192.168.100.2 Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0 Router Address: 192.168.100.1 DNS Servers: 8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4 Router Mode: DHCP and NAT But using those settings, my TM says "Double NAT", so I have to change it all around to the default settings of the Ubee using NAT. This leads me to believe bridge mode doesn't actually turn off NAT...

  I have come to realize the tremendous amount of information Google has on its users. I am a typical Google user, using Gmail, Google Reader. This means that right now Google now has the following information at its disposal: Who my friends are (Gmail) What we talk about (Gmail, Google Talk) What news sources I follow (Google Reader) How frequently I check them and which ones I consider important enough to share (Google Reader) A lot of other stuff What I search about and when (if I search when logged in) (Web search) I have no reason to believe that this information is used for reasons other than adjusting what ads I am displayed when I visit a site with Google Ads. However, I have realised that I am in no position to be certain that this is absolutely true, or that it always will be.   There's such utility for Windows developers called regtlib. I have three computers - one with WinXP, another two with Win2k3. If I run built-in Windows search for file with wildcard regtlib* on the whole filesystem search finds nothing on all three computers. If I try to execute regtlib on WinXP command line it says it can't find such a file or built-in command. The same on one of the two Win2k3 computers. But when I do that on the other Win2k3 computer I see typical regtlib output. What happens? What is the magic that invokes regtlib without the file being present on the filesystem?

  Hi, I want to increase the RAM in my MacBookPro 15", 2.53 GHz, Mid-2009. I currently have 4GB, and I want 6GB (and upgrade to 8GB later - I think this should work with my model: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=573906) Now I see two offers: 1x4GB DDR3 1333 CL9 9-9 (149 EUR) 1x4GB DDR3 1066 CL7 7-7 (192 EUR). Both are from the same brand (Transcend), both are labeled "For MacBook/MacBookPro". Now I have no idea, which of these would work better with the 2GB RAM module from my currently installed memory (Running at 1067 MHz, according to System Profiler - but with what CL setting?) Would the 1333 CL9 RAM be set to CL7 when running at 1066 MHz? • Is the Microsoft Surface restricted to Chinese display language in China and Hong Kong

  I currently live in China so my only options to buy a Surface tablet is to buy it here or in Hong Kong. Problem is that by default the entire UI is in Chinese. In the x86 version of Windows 8 you can install additional language packs to solve this, but I'm wondering if this is true for the tablet as well In the shop (Sunning) they will not let me try that, and if I buy one and it turns out you can't install language packs than I'm pooched. Can't find any official information on it either, at least nothing that refers to the tablet directly. (and whether or not the Chinese version is restricted in some way)

  I just tried to install windows 8.1 on my laptop, but it fails to install with the message: Sorry we couldn't complete the update to Windows 8.1. We restored your previous version of Windows to this PC 0xC1900101 - 0x20017 It looks like on the first boot that the laptop is going to the PC restore screen (it asks what kind of keyboard I have, and then what repair optins I would like to take). Thus far I have just been selecting "Continue to windows 8." I'm running a Lenovo x220i tablet. I've got 43GB of free disk space. It installed just fine on my desktop. The primary difference between the two machines is that the desktop has media center install, and isn't using TrueCrypt. • Lost Internet access in Windows XP Mode virtual pc under Windows 7

  In my office, I created and configured a virtual pc in Windows XP Mode. Everything was working fine. Now I'm on the road, and my Internet access (in the host operation system) is either via a hotel wifi or through my Verizon air card. Either way, I've lost Internet access in the virtual pc. I went into the Virtual PC settings, and set the Networking value to Shared Networking (NAT). Actually, I've tried every combination I can find, but I can't get from the virtual pc to the web. I'm hoping to use the virtual box at a client site, so I really need that access. Is there anything I can do to get it back? Thanks for any help.

• How to dictate a Non-English text on an English Windows 7?

  I'm using an English Windows 7 with speech recognition working fine if I'm dictating in English. I would like to dictate a letter in German. I don't need further features that let you use your computer without a mouse, I want to dictate my letter. If I just start speaking German the Windows speech recognition software just gives me English gibberish. When I set the Speech Recognition to "German" in the Speech Properties dialog, I get the error message: Speech Recognition could not start because the language configuration is not supported. The recognizer language must match the language of the user interface. Please change the recognizer language in the Speech Recognition control panel under Advanced Options. This error message doesn't help me, because it tells me that I either need to change my system language or the language I want to dictate. But that's not what I want. How can I dictate in German on my PC with the English version of Windows 7?

• Getting Android drivers to work on Windows 8 Community Preview

  I made a post about this on android.stackexchange.com, and they referred me to here. I have an HTC Flyer and a Motorola Droid X, and for both, I've been unable to connect to USB debugging to do Android development. With the Motorola Droid X, the MotoHelper installer won't run, saying that I'm running an Unknown OS Version. With the HTC Flyer, HTC's Sync software installs successfully, but again the device doesn't connect. I realize that this is beta software, but is there anything that I can do to get this working? I've been relying on switching back to my laptop running Linux to test out my Android builds on the device. Of course, I'm not in any production environment - just playing around with the new OS, but not being able to write code on it makes less fun.
