    I have a 2D array declared like this: int arr[2][2]={ {1,2},{3,4}}; Now if I do: int ** ptr=(int**) arr; and: cout<<**ptr; I am getting a segmentation fault (using g++-4.0). Why so? Shouldn't it be printing the value 1 (equal to arr[0][0])?

  • Is there image phase correlation libraries available for Python?

    A project that involves image processing, i.e. to calculate the angular shift of the same image when shifted by a medium of certain Refractive Index. We have to build an app that correlates the 2 images (phase/2D correlation?) and then plot using Chaco and Mayavi (2 libraries in Python). Is there any other existing template software (FOSS) that we can base our app on, or use it as a reference?

    I'm using Alberto Santini's solution to this question to get a spiral grid reference based on an items index Algorithm for iterating over an outward spiral on a discrete 2D grid from the origin It's not the accepted solution, but it's the best for my needs as it avoids using a loop. It's working well, but what I want now is to do the inverse. Based on a known x and y coordinate return the index of a location. This is as a precursor to returning the items surrounding a given location.

    hi i just finished essential part of my own personal 2d engine in c++ and i'm kinda deciding how to complete the part where it is actually supposed to display everything on the screen, namely when do I call that function which does the job. I don't have much idea of how does the graphic card work, my biggest experience is calling bios graphic services to write some stuff on the screen. Could you give me a hint on this pls? Or maybe some keywords I should try to google?

  • PHP array performance

    Hi, this is my first question on Stackoverflow, please bear with me. I'm testing an algorithm for 2d bin packing and I've chosen PHP to mock it up as it's my bread-and-butter language nowadays. As you can see on http://themworks.com/pack_v0.2/oopack.php?ol=1 it works pretty well, but you need to wait around 10-20 seconds for 100 rectangles to pack. For some hard to handle sets it would hit the php's 30s runtime limit. I did some profiling and it shows that most of the time my script goes through different parts of a small 2d array with 0's and 1's in it. It either checks if certain cell equals to 0/1 or sets it to 0/1. It can do such operations million times and each times it takes few microseconds. I guess I could use an array of booleans in a statically typed language and things would be faster. Or even make an array of 1 bit values. I'm thinking of converting the whole thing to some compiled language. Is PHP just not good for it? If I do need to convert it to let's say C++, how good are the automatic converters? My script is just a lot of for loops with basic arrays and objects manipulations. Thank you! Edit. This function gets called more than any other.   • Cannot ping host stale ARP cache?

    I am having a strange issue with a Debian (Lenny/Linux 2.6.26-2-amd64) that has been driving me nuts. On some machines within my network I can ping the host in question just fine, other times I have to manually hard-code the ARP ethernet address for the IP in order to establish connectivity. I've finally worked it down to somehow involving ARP. I just found how to fix it in a way that made it work but I'm looking for help explaining this issue and also I don't trust my fix to be permanent.. My thought process has been the following but I just can't make any sense out of it: Could it be the card? (Intel 82555 rev 4) Could it be because there are two network cards? (Default route is eth0) Could it be because of the network aliases? Lenny? AMD x86_64? Argh..     I want to create a city filled with virtual creatures. Say like Sim City, where each creature walks around, doing it's own tasks. I'd prefer the city to not 'explode' or do weird things -- like the population dies off, or the population leaves, or any other unexpected crap. Is there a set of basic rules I can encode each agent with so that the city will be 'stable'? (Much like how for physics simulations, we have some basic rules that govern everything; is there a set of rules that governs how a simulation of a virtual city will be stable?) I'm new to this area and have no idea what algorithms/books to look into. Insights deeply appreciated. Thanks!

    Hi! I need a listbox with IPhone-like functionality for Silverlight. That is, animated scrolling, and click and drag to scroll. Scrolling will continue a bit after the mouse up event based on the "speed" of the dragging. I've search and found no control vendors providing this. So question is how should I build it? I need some hints to get started. There's two parts to this question: Part 1, How to get the animated scrolling of the listbox. Part 2, How to build a "draggable" scrolling, I guess I should put a canvas on top and track the mouseevent, and simulate some physics. Some hints here would have been great. Thanks Larsi.

    Hi, let's say that I am a physicist and that I am the master of the universe when it comes to port salready existing oftware to GPU's with 100x or more speedups. Let's say that I find that some other scientist, which does not know how to program GPU, publishes the Open Source code in his/her website of a physical simulation program, in the field I am expert on. Let's say that I realize "I can port that code to GPU", and I suggest him, but he shows no interest. My interest here is, 1) to port it to GPU, 2) to publish this result in a scientific journal related with physics and/or computer science My question for you is 1- would you proceed here to port the code to GPU (or other new arch) and publish it? 2- how would you do it and which journal do you suggest?   • Java :moving ball with angle ?

    Hi all.I am started to learn game physics and I am trying to move ball with an angle.But it does not change its angle .Java coordinate sydstem is a little different and i think my problem is there.Here my codes this is for calculating x and y speed scale_X= Math.sin(angle); scale_Y=Math.cos(angle); velosity_X=(speed*scale_X); velosity_Y=(speed*scale_Y); This is for moving ball in run() function ball.posX =ball.posX+(int)velosity_X; ball.posY=ball.posY+(int)velosity_Y; I used (int)velosity_X and (int)velosity_Y because in ball class I draw object g.drawOval(posX, posX, width, height); and here g.drawOval requares int.I dont know is it problem or not. Also if I use angle 30 it goes +X and +Y but if I use angle 35 it goes -X and -Y. I didnot figure out how work coordinate system on java.

  • Dragging a Sprite (Cocos2D) while Chipmunk is simulating

    Hello all! I have a simple project built with Cocos2D and Chipmunk. So far it's just a Ball (body, shape & sprite) bouncing on the Ground (a static line segment at the bottom of the screen). I implemented the ccTouchesBegan/Moved/Ended methods to drag the ball around. I've tried both: cpBodySlew(ballBody, touchPoint, 1.0/60.0f); and ballBody->p = cgPointMake(touchPoint.x,touchPoint.y); and while the Ball does follow my dragging, it's still being affected by gravity and it tries to go down (which causes velocity problems and others). Does anyone know of the preferred way to Drag an active Body while the physics simulation is going on? Do I need somehow to stop the simulation and turn it back on afterwards? Thanks!
