• How can I boot a vm on Hyper-V 2012 when it has a virtual hard-drive missing?

  We have a Hyper-V 2012 server with 8 VM's on. We have attached extra virtual hard-drives to each of the computers to store backups on. These drives are stored on a NAS. After a power failure, we tried to boot the VM's and found that they couldn't be booted without the attached backup drives. We couldn't boot the NAS at that point and so we had to remove all the extra drives manually, boot the VM's and re-attach the drives at a later date when we got the NAS back up and running. These backup drives are non-essential to the running of the system. I would like to know if there is a way to boot a VM on Hyper-V 2012 with some of the hard-drives (scsi) missing so that we can recover automatically from a power failure.

• Windows 8 will only recognize the Blu Ray ROM, if the install disk is present at boot time [migrated]

  If I have the install disk in the blu ray ROM drive at boot time and subsequently remove the disk and replace it with blu ray media everything functions as I'd expect. However, if I have no media present, or another disk in the drive at boot time, then windows 8 does not seem to recognize that the blu ray player is even present in the computer. It is not present in the 'my computer' screen, device manager does not show the player, and scanning for new hardware yields nothing. It seems that the driver is installed and working as expect, what is it about having the windows 8 install disk in the drive or not that would cause this kind of behavior?

• San Disk Cruzer Glide 32 GB and 8Gb can't be copied to.

  I have Ubuntu 12.04 with a kernal of 3.0.0-17-generic (#30-Ubuntu SMP Thu Mar 8 17:34:21 UT When I tried to copy files to a San Disk Cruzer 8gb usb drive, the copy process went a short way and then completely stopped. Although I have copied items to the USB drive from my PC before, this time the files would start quickly enough but always stop shortly after starting. I figure the 8 gb was bad, so I went and got a brand new 32 gb usb drive from a store, unpackaged it and plugged it in, still unable to copy to the usb drive. So is there some kind of incompatibility or issue where San Disk Cruzer Glides are no longer supporting it. Is there an obscure setting that I am missing? Any help would be appreciated

  I'm planning to buy a new PC and I am thinking about using an SSD as the main disk. I'd also use a standard spinning disk and I'd mount it to /home. To the people already using such a setup: does this induce a practical, noticeable enhancement in performance? I think that access times, rather than transfer rates, are the more useful feature of SSD's. I would like to know if they have a noticeable effect on a desktop installation of Ubuntu. • Windows 7 Extend C Volume to Unallocated Space

  a while back I installed Ubuntu and then later uninstalled it by I think deleting the partitions and recovering the windows 7 boot loader. I am not that experienced with partitioning yet. As you can see here there are two partitions that are now unallocated. The 9gb one is a recovery or something that came with the computer. How can I extend my C partition to use both of those? I do not want to have that much storage just wasted sitting there. • DVD Drive Has Stopped Recognizing Discs

  My DVD drive no longer recognizes dvds, but does recognize CD-ROMs. When a DVD is in the drive, the computer continues to act as though there is no disc in the drive. However, when a normal CD-ROM is in the drive, it appears to work normally. I have tested on several discs, both video and game, and the behavior is consistent. I have also tested this on both Windows Vista and Ubuntu 9.10, and the issue remains the same. Can anyone recommend a way to fix this?

• Forbidden Patterns Check-In Policy in TFS 2010

  I've been trying to use the Forbidden Patterns part of the TFS 2010 Power Tools and I'm just not understanding something - I simply cannot get anything to change as I try to use this! I'm using the version that was released recently (I believe April 23, 2010), so it's not an old version. First off, yes, I know it's regex based, so let's clear that doubt... I have tried to block the following scenarios: 1) I have modified all of my T4 EF templates to generate files named EntityName.gen.cs. I then attempted to prevent TFS from wanting to check those files in. I used the regular expression \.gen\.cs\z and it didn't change a single thing! I even tried it without the \z and nadda! 2) I don't want app.config and web.config files to be checked-in by default because we have these things stored into app.config.base and web.config.base files that our build scripts use to generate our per-environment app.config and web.config files. As such, I tried the following regexes and again, nothing worked! web\.config\z, app\.config\z, web\.release\.config\z and web\.debug\.config\z. What is it that I am screwing up with this?

  Hi guys, I have a new table that hold old passwords, I need to check if there is a match. If there is a match I need the ChangePassword contol to NOT change the password. I need to tell the user that this password was used and pic a new one. I can't seem to be able to interrupt the control from changing the password. Maybe I am using the wrong event. Now, the thing to consider in this scenario is, my iPhone application everytime requesting on the server and fetching the data. But now my requirement is like I want to replace following set of actions with above one : - Everytime when my application is launched in iPhone, it should check for the new data at the server`. - And if server replies "true" then only my iPhone application will made a request to fetch the data. - In case of "false", my iPhone application will display the data which is already cached in local phone memory. Now to implement this scenario at server side (which has php, mysql), I am planning with the following solution : Table : tblNewerData id newDataFlag == ============ 1 true Trigger : tgrUpdateNewData Above trigger will update the tblNewerData - newDataFlag field on Insert case of my main table. And every time my iPhone app will request for tblNewerData-newDataFlag field, and if it found true then only it will create new request, and if it founds false then the cached version of data will be displayed. It will be deployed as a scheduled task. However, the *.ps files are rather large (minimum of 1GB) in real time cases. So the code is supposed to check if the incoming file is completely written and is not locked by the application that is writing it. I saw another example elsewhere, that suggested the following approach :TestFile ren c:\file.txt c:\file.txt if errorlevel 0 goto docopy sleep 5 goto TestFile :docopy However this example is good for a fixed file. How can I use that many labels and GoTo's inside a for loop without causing an infinite loop? Or is this code safe to be used in the For Loop? Thank you for any help.

• C++: Check istream has non-space, non-tab, non-newline characters left without extracting chars

  I am reading a std::istream and I need to verify without extracting characters that: 1) The stream is not "empty", i.e. that trying to read a char will not result in an fail state (solved by using peek() member function and checking fail state, then setting back to original state) 2) That among the characters left there is at least one which is not a space, a tab or a newline char. The reason for this is, is that I am reading text files containing say one int per line, and sometimes there may be extra spaces / new-lines at the end of the file and this causes issues when I try get back the data from the file to a vector of int. A peek(int n) would probably do what I need but I am stuck with its implementation. I know I could just read istream like: while (myInt << myIstream) {...} //Will fail when I am at the end but the same check would fail for a number of different conditions (say I have something which is not an int on some line) and being able to differentiate between the two reading errors (unexpected thing, nothing left) would help me to write more robust code, as I could write: while (something_left(myIstream)) { myInt << myIstream; if (myStream.fail()) {...} //Horrible things happened } Thank you!

• For commands to check duped/multiple mc's.

  Currently I'm working on a platform type game. I have a for loop in place to check weather or not the players feet are touching the ground. I had this; for (i=0; i<5; i++) { //There are 5 floors if (this.feet.hitTest(_root["g"+i])) { _root.mc.groundTouch = true; //triggers the mc falling } } This works fine only if one of the floors exist(IE if floor1 is on the stage, but floor2-5 aren't); So to try and counter it I tried using; for (i=0; i<5; i++) { if (this.feet.hitTest(_root["floor"+i])) { _root.mc.groundTouch = true; //triggers the mc falling } if (!this.feet.hitTest(_root["floor"+i])) { _root.mc.groundTouch = false; } } This obviously doesn't work because in order for it to function properly, _root.mc.feet would have to be touching all 5 instances of "floor". So my question is; How do I get the code to make _root.mc.groundTouch = true if _root.mc.feet is touching any of the floor instances, but make _root.mc.groundTouch = false only if its touching none of the floor instances? I know that if I really wanted to I could do something like if (_root.mc.feet.hitTest(_root.floor1) && !_root.mc.feet.hitTest(_root.floor2) && etc) But to save myself time, and to give myself the ability to add floors without altering more then i<5 to the amount of floors I have, I would prefer a easier method hopefully something to do with for loops. • How to use Common Table Expression and check no duplication in SQL Server

  I have a table references to itself. User table: id, username, managerid and managerid links back to id Now, I want to get all the managers including direct manager, manager of direct manager, so on and so forth... The problem is that I do not want to have a unstop recursive sql. So, I want to check if an id alreay in a list, I will not include it anymore. Here is my sql for that: with all_managers (id, username, managerid, idlist) as ( select u1.id, u1.username, u1.managerid, ' ' from users u1, users u2 where u1.id = u2.managerid and u2.id = 6 UNION ALL select u.id, u.username, u.managerid, idlist + ' ' + u.id from all_managers a, users u where a.managerid = u.id and charindex(cast(u.id as nvarchar(5)), idlist) != 0 ) select id, username from all_managers; The problem is that in this line: select u1.id, u1.username, u1.managerid, ' ' The SQL Server complains with me that I can not put ' ' as the initialized for idlist. nvarchar(40) does not work as well. I do not know how to declare it inside a common table expression like this one. Usually, in db2, I can just put varchar(40) My sample data: ID UserName ManagerID 1 admin 1 2 a 1 3 b 1 4 c 2 What I want to do is that I want to find all managers of c guy. The result should be: admin, a, b. Some of the user can be his manager (like admin) because the ManagerID does not allow NULL and some does not have direct manager. With common table expression, it can lead to an infinite recursive. So, I am also trying to avoid that situation by trying to not include the id twice. For example, in the 1st iteration, we already have id : 1, so, in the 2nd iteration and later on, 1 should never be allowed. I also want to ask if my current approach is good or not and any other solutions? Because if I have a big database with a deep hierarchy, I will have to initialize a big varchar to keep it and it consumes memory, right?

• python: nonblocking subprocess, check stdout

  Ok so the problem I'm trying to solve is this: I need to run a program with some flags set, check on its progress and report back to a server. So I need my script to avoid blocking while the program executes, but I also need to be able to read the output. Unfortunately, I don't think any of the methods available from Popen will read the output without blocking. I tried the following, which is a bit hack-y (are we allowed to read and write to the same file from two different objects?) import time import subprocess from subprocess import * with open("stdout.txt", "wb") as outf: with open("stderr.txt", "wb") as errf: command = ['Path\\To\\Program.exe', 'para', 'met', 'ers'] p = subprocess.Popen(command, stdout=outf, stderr=errf) isdone = False while not isdone : with open("stdout.txt", "rb") as readoutf: #this feels wrong for line in readoutf: print(line) print("waiting...\\r\\n") if(p.poll() != None) : done = True time.sleep(1) output = p.communicate()[0] print(output) Unfortunately, Popen doesn't seem to write to my file until after the command terminates. Does anyone know of a way to do this?
