• Does the .NET CLR Really Optimize for the Current Processor

  When I read about the performance of JITted languages like C# or Java, authors usually say that they should/could theoretically outperform many native-compiled applications. The theory being that native applications are usually just compiled for a processor family (like x86), so the compiler cannot make certain optimizations as they may not truly be optimizations on all processors. On the other hand, the CLR can make processor-specific optimizations during the JIT process. Does anyone know if Microsoft's (or Mono's) CLR actually performs processor-specific optimizations during the JIT process? If so, what kind of optimizations?

• NSDateFormatter, am I doing something wrong or is this a bug?

  I'm trying to print out the date in a certain format: NSDate *today = [[NSDate alloc] init]; NSDateFormatter *dateFormatter = [[NSDateFormatter alloc] init]; [dateFormatter setDateFormat:@"yyyyMMddHHmmss"]; NSString *dateStr = [dateFormatter stringFromDate:today]; If the iPhone is set to 24 hour time, this works fine, if on the other hand the user has set it to 24 hour time, then back to AM/PM (it works fine until you toggle this setting) then it appends the AM/PM on the end even though I didn't ask for it: 20080927030337 PM Am I doing something wrong or is this a bug with firmware 2.1? • Jquery: how make div slide in and out

  Hi, I am currently learning jQuery. I'd like to know how to make an image slide in when you click on its edge, then click again and it slides away. Similar to this: http://www.karenmillen.com/ If you see the right hand side and click, there is the effect that i'm looking for. I assume this will involve making a div and giving it a background image then using some jquery to make the div slide into view. Of course the div could have other content such as html. Any ideas? Would the .slideDown() method work?

Again I'm still new to this javascript thing, so just would like to know if there is another way of setting the values of an array (just like declaring it); //correct way of declaring an array and reusing var adata = new Array('1','2','3'); //reusing of variable adata[0] = '4'; adata[1] = '5'; adata[2] = '6' ** This part is my question; I want to declare the values of the array just like declaring them to minimize the number of lines; //array declaration var data = new Array('1','2','3'); //reusing of variable data = ['4','5','6']; --- (as an example) I get an error msg "Invalid assignment left-hand side" is this possible?   What are your settings, your tricks, and above all, your workflow. These tools are great but they is still no best practices attached to their usage, so I don't know what is the most efficient way. Do you use pip bundles or always download? Do you set up Apache/Cherokee/MySQl by hand or do you have a script for than. Do you put everything in virtual_env and use --no-site-package? Do you use one virtual_env for several projects? What do you use Fabric for (which part of your deployment do you script)? Do you put your Fabric scripts in on the client or the server? How do you handle database and media file migration? Do you even need a build tool such as SCons? What are the steps of your deployment? How often do you perform each of them? etc.

• What *collaborative* wireframing / UI mockup tools are out there?

  I'm looking for something that applies the collaboration focus (one location/URL, always up-to-date, multi-person online read/write access anywhere) of google docs / google spreadsheets to wireframing. Bonus points if, like Google Docs, it needs only a browser yet also works offline. More bonus points if it supports automatic revisions. Even more bonus points if you can hand out login-less 'invitation' URLs like Flickr does, instead of forcing people into signing up for accounts or using their home accounts. To start off, there's one called iPlotz, but it didn't enchant me -- ironically, mostly because of its akward UI, which can't hold a candle to omnigraffle (don't let that prevent you from giving it a try though). And no, paper prototyping, wonderful as it is, does not qualify: it does not combine being instantly globally shareable & editable very well :-)

• Reverting after a merge, bad idea?

  Hi, I'm a newcomer to subversion. Recently, I've done some development in two different branches, where one of the branches was a branch of the other branch. I've merged down some changes from the first branch down to the trunk. However, when trying to merge down changes from the other branch to trunk, everything went haywire. That is, I've had a lot of conflicts, some of which I resolved (but not commited) and some of which are not. What worse is, a lot of the changes I made to the branch were for some reason not merged into the trunk. Now, my only question is, can I just do a revert on my working copy to return the trunk into its previous state? That is, will I mess something up by doing this? My taught is to start all over again and do it more carefully "by hand". Thanx!

• Getting the height of text to know fill height as in TCPDF

  I'm trying to go through the code of TCPDF to understand how it calculates the height of the text to be rendered, but it's too much for me to handle without asking. What I want to know: in the PDF from example 5 http://www.tcpdf.org/examples/example_005.pdf it gives the cell a yellow background. I'm guessing that at the basic level, it first draws a box with this fill color, then adds the text, so what method is it calling to get the height of the text to know the height of the box to fill? Anyone knows how to trace this, because doing it by hand and looking through the code isn't working at all for me.

  Hello , I'm a bit stuck with which charting library I will use in my project. Im stuck with this two (but also open for other suggestions) For YUI Charts : Pro : - Very robust and configurable Cons : - Uses flash 9 , which might potentially be inaccessible for users without up to date flash version - Does not support export to image (for flash versions < 10 only) For Google Visualization API pros: - small file size for the libraries, - can be exported to static image charts (via separate API call) Cons - limited configuration options So there, please help me decide. YUI charts has the edge over configuration options but Google Visualization API has the edge in terms of accessibility as it uses SVG to render the grapsh instead of Flash. For users that are hand-cuffed by corporate IT prohibitions , they cant just upgrade their Flash version and the page will not work. Thanks!

  Hello, World.. I'm a web developer mostly working in Ruby and C#.. I wanna learn a low level language so i dont look like an ass infront of my (computer science expert) boss. Ive heard a lot of purist buzz about how assembly language is the only way to learn how computers actually work, but on the other hand C would probably be more useful as a language rather than just for theory. • What things on a job listing should be avoided?

  Hello, I'm looking at trying my hand at a bit of freelancing. And looking at some of the listings, I can tell some of them are definitely, obviously wrong. "A web application mimicking youtube. Project must be completed in 2 weeks. Flat payment of $200. If you are not willing to do things this fast paced then do not apply" But some of them are more subtle and they give me a red flag inside, but I'm not sure to avoid them. What are some things in job listings to avoid for freelance programming jobs? What is the reason for avoiding that?

• MIDI on Android: Libs and So Forth

  I've been contemplating (re)building an app on iPad for some time, where I would use objective-C and DSMI to send MIDI signals to a host computer. This is not bad (I mean, except for actually writing the app). Now I'm contemplating perhaps developing the app for Android tablets (TBA). In Java, what options are available for MIDI message communication? I'm quite familiar with javax.sound.midi, but then I would need a virtual MIDI port to send messages to the host. On the other hand, if the app were done in Adobe AIR, what options would I have available for communicating with MIDI? Obviously another option is to send/receive messages over a TCP/IP socket to a Java host, and talk that way, but it sounds a tad cumbersome... or perhaps not? DSMI does use a host program, after all.

• Python/Tkinter Audio Player

  Hey everyone reading this, I've recently got into doing GUI development with Python. Tkinter seems like the easiest and most logical choice starting out. I did a little with wxPython but it was more sophisticated than what I needed. Anyway, I'm developing a media player. Right now it's a simple window with a button to load .wav files. The problem is I would like to implement a pause button now. But, when playing a audio file the GUI isn't accessible again (no buttons can be pushed) till the file is done playing. How can I make the GUI dynamic while an audio file is playing? I was thinking this maybe be because I'm using PyAudio, and their implementation doesn't allow this. Anyway, thanks for any advice before hand.

  Sometimes, I came across certain web development framework which doesn't provide authentication feature as in Authenication ASP.NET I was wondering what is the security measure needs to be considered, when implementing "Remember Me" login feature, by hand coding? Here are the things I usually did. 1) Store the user name in cookie. The user name are not encrypted. 2) Store a secret key in cookie. The secret key is generated using one way function based on user name. • How to overcome an apparent REST vs. DRY dilemma in rails?

  A rails app I'm working on features examples of quadratic equations. Obviously, these are all of a common structure: ax^2 + bx + c = 0. I don't want to store every single example of these. I'd rather generate them from a template. Storing hundreds of possible versions of this structure seems highly wasteful and un-DRY. On the other hand, if I generate them, I can't access them again reliably as I could if they were simply multiple database objects. I'm sure there must be a way to overcome this, but I'm still learning rails and I'm obviously not grasping something here. Thanks.

• Choosing MooTools over Google closure?

  I am in a process to select javascript library for our new web application. This app is not very UI heavy but has forms, reports, search, calendars, tabs and target multiple countries like most web apps. We are a tiny team. Biggest concern is maintainability and readability of the code. We are Python programmers. After evaluating many other javascript frameworks we have narrowed down to mootools and google-closure. We loved mootools syntax. It took us no time to learn. It's like Python. On other hand we were stumped seeing private/public in google closure. It's tempting to go for mootools however, I would love to hear from you about specific advantages these frameworks offer over each other.

• Can I use android.os.* libraries in a standalone project?

  I'm trying to develop an external library (not sure if that's the right term) to provide prepackaged functionality in Android projects. Working in Eclipse, I've added the appropriate android.jar file to the build path, and everything is happy both while editing and upon compilation. However, when I use Android's Handler and Message classes (android.os.Handler, android.os.Message) for inter-thread communication, I get exceptions unless I'm running within an Android app, on the emulator or a device. I can no longer test my library in a "standalone" way without having to go through a running Android target. Is there any way for me to include these two Android classes and still be able to test my library standalone? Do I need to have the Android source available? Or would it require some sort of conditional compilation hand-waving?

• multiple jQuery Cycle slideshows get superimposed

  I'm using the jQuery cycle plugin to create multiple slideshows on a single page (which, once I get this problem figured out, will be started/stopped by mouse hover -- yeah, I know there are 9 slideshows on the page). Problem is, when I tell more than one slideshow to start cycling, whichever ones I call cycle() on get superimposed. So, all the images from slide 1 are superimposed, then they all transition to slide 2, etc. I can tell they're being superimposed because the first slide of each slideshow contains a transparent PNG. This happens whether I call cycle() in a jQuery each() iterator, or even if I call it by hand on just two or three of the containers with a jQuery id selector. • Limited options for accessing events in derived classes?

  Im refactoring a class, and moving sections into a base class. I have a few events similar to public event EventHandler GridBinding; Which are now in the base class, but i am finding i cannot now check to see if the event is null in my derived class. Doing so gives me the error: The event 'xyz.GridBinding' can only appear on the left hand side of += or -= (except when used from within the type 'xyz._MyBaseClass'). Is this correct, am i missing anything, or is there any way to get around this or is writing an accessor the only way to do this? I am using c#/.net 4.0

• GWT AbstractColumnDefinition (Need to add style to certain Columns)

  I have a column Definition for each colume that extends AbstractColumnDefinition these columns are put in a DefaultTableDefinition. example: NAME | SIZE | RES | DELETE | this style (AT THE END OF THE PAGE ) is added to the column names if you notice all of them are with a cursor pointer , meaning a hand shows up when i hover above each one. my question is would I be able to remove the coursor for delete or in general for a certain column and keeping it for another one .. i tried to do that with each column Definition but there is no such thing as remove or addstyle even to like put my own style.   A little left field, but I'm trying to train a speech recognition program and the guidelines suggest that I attempt to speak clearly but naturally. I notice, however, that when one speaks naturally each word tends to drift into the next, resulting in a rather ambiguous boundary between the words. One the one hand, speaking in a more stilted manner would seem to aid the computer in recognising the phonemes, but on the other it would tend to make it less likely to understand more natural speech. Anyone knowledgeable in the field out there who can suggest which of the two approaches is more effective? Thanks
