• SQL Server database with clustered GUID PKs - switch clustered index or switch to sequential (comb)

  We have a database in which all the PKs are GUIDs, and most of the PKs are also the clustered index for the table. We know that this is bad (due to the random nature of GUIDs). So, it seems there are basically two options here (short of throwing out GUIDs as PKs altogether, which we cannot do (at least not at this time)). We could change the GUID generation algorithm to e.g. the one that NHibernate uses, as detailed in this post, or we could, for the tables that are under the heaviest use, change to a different clustered index, e.g. an IDENTITY column, and keep the "random" GUIDs as PKs. Is it possible to give any general recommendations in such a scenario? The application in question has 500+ tables, the largest one presently at about 1,5 million rows, a few tables around 500 000 rows, and the rest significantly lower (most of them well below 10K). Furthermore, the application is installed at several customer sites already, so we have to take any possible negative effects for existing customer into consideration. Thanks!

• Configuration Error ASP.NET password format specified is invalid

  I am getting the above error in IIS 6.0 now when I browse my C# / SQL web application. This was built in VS 2008 and SS 2008 on a 32-bit XP OS. The application was working before I added Login controls to it. However, this is my first time configuring Login/password controls so I am probably missing something really basic. This error doesn't happen until I try to login. Here are the details of my error from IIS; I get the same error in VS: Parser Error Message: Password format specified is invalid. The Network Service account has SELECT, EXECUTE, INSERT, UPDATE access to this database. But one problem I see is that all of the tables in this database are empty except for aspnet_SchemaVersions, which just has 2 records (common and membership). Is this right? I added users and roles via ASP.NET Configuration wizard, and I believe I set this up correctly since I followed the Microsoft tutorial at http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms998347.aspx. One other problem I see from VS is after adding content to my Page_Load on my initial login Password.aspx.cs file, I'm getting an invalid cast problem below. I googled this problem also but the solutions I saw confused me even more. • Storing a digital signature for bookings on a web based system

  I have a web based bookings system built for a UK higher education client to allow students to sign out equipment (laptops, camera's etc). It's been in use successfully for a couple of years, in the current workflow equipment is collected and the booking is printed, signed by the student and kept until the equipment is returned. They are emailed a pdf copy of the booking and reminders if equipment is outstanding. Students can login and prebook equipment using their university LDAP credentials, the booking is then authorised by staff for later collection, but can also walk in and have equipment booked out by staff. They would like to remove the signed paper part of the process and replace this with some sort of digital signature. The suggestion was a graphics tablet but with a web based system this would require a local software package and in my view be impractical. My thought is that students would enter their LDAP username and password upon collection of the equipment, verifying their identity and effectively digitally signing the booking. My question is what would be best to store as a signature or whether to simply authenticate the user and use a boolean flag to indicate that this has been done could be deemed sufficient?

• Can't ssh to ec2 permission denied (publickey)

  I have existing instances running and I can connect to them fine. Even if I start a new instance from one of my saved ami's I can connect to it fine but any new public or community ami (I've tried 2 offical Ubuntu ami's and 1 Fedora quickstart ami) I get permission denied (publickey). The permissions are good on my key file. I've also tried creating a new keyfile. My ec2 firewall rules are good, I've also tried creating a new group. • Can the public ssh key from my local machine be used to access two different users on a remote serve

  I have an new ubuntu (hardy 8.04) server, it has two users, User1 and User2. User1 is listed in sudoers. I appended my public ssh key (my local machine's public key local/Users/nick/.ssh/id_rsa.pub) to authorized_keys in remote_server/home/user1/.ssh/authorized_keys, changed the permissions on user1/.ssh/ to 700 and user1/.ssh/authorized_keys to 600 and both file and folder are owned my User1. Then added I User1 to sshd_config (AllowUsers User1). This works and I can login into User1 debug1: Offering public key: /Users/nick/.ssh/id_rsa debug1: Server accepts key: pkalg ssh-rsa blen 277 debug1: Authentication succeeded (publickey). debug1: channel 0: new [client-session] debug1: Entering interactive session. Last login: Mon Mar 15 09:51:01 2010 from ..*.* I then copied the authorized_keys file remote_server/home/user1/.ssh/authorized_keys to remote_server/home/user2/.shh/authorized_keys and changed the permissions and ownership and added User2 to AllowUsers in sshd_config (AllowUsers User1 User2). • Amazon EC2 RSA key stopped authenticating - Permission denied (publickey)

  Authenticating to our Ubuntu EC2 instance worked fine until a little while ago. All of a sudden, the key is being rejected. When we create a new instance with the keypair, we're able to connect to the instance perfectly, so it appears to be an issue with the existing instance. Port 22 is open. Any suggestions on what to look at from a configuration standpoint so we can fix this? Any thoughts on how we can get into the box? Here is the SSH debug output. Is there anything obviously amiss? Dashes represent 0 or no number. I'd like to be able to mark a rectangular region such as third column above, call a function (format-column), and automatically have (-73135-11018-69313+64-26330)/1000 sitting in my kill-ring. Even better would be -73.135-11.018-69.313+0.064-26.330 but I couldn't figure out a way to transform 64 -- 0.064. • Linq to SQL not inserting data onto the DB

  Hello! I have a little / weird behaviour here and Im looking over internet and SO and I didn't find a response. I have to admit that this is my first time using databases, I know how to use them with SQL but never used it actually. Anyway, I have a problem with my app inserting data, I just created a very simple project for testing that and no solution yet. I have an example database with Sql Server Id - int (identity primary key) Name - nchar(10) (not null) The table is called "Person", simple as pie. I have this: static void Main(string[] args) { var db = new ExampleDBDataContext {Log = Console.Out}; var jesus = new Person {Name = "Jesus"}; db.Persons.InsertOnSubmit(jesus); db.SubmitChanges(); var query = from person in db.Persons select person; foreach (var p in query) { Console.WriteLine(p.Name); } } As you can see, nothing extrange. It show Jesus in the console. But if you see the table data, there is no data, just empty. I comment the object creation and insertion and the foreach doesn't print a thing (normal, there is no data in the database) The weird thing is that I created a row in the database manually and the Id was 2 and no 1 (Was the linq really playing with the database but it didn't create the row?) • XNA Reach profile with VMWare - Vertex Buffers not working?

  Running XNA app, using Reach profile, in VMWare Fusion host OS Mac OSX, VM is Windows XP SP 3 (my dual-boot OS). Running on MacBook Pro w/NVidia 320M graphics card When I am booted in to XP natively, my code works. The code is drawing cubes that are set up using vertex buffers When another friend runs this same code on Windows 7, it also works for him just fine When I am running my code in the VM, it doesn't work. I have billboarding sprites running in a shader program and this part displays fine. I get no crashing or errors, the geometry just doesn't appear. I tried Debug and Release. This is very basic operation so I'm thinking VMWare isn't the problem, but it's my code.... • How to get stack trace information for logging in production when using the GAC

  I would like to get stack trace (file name and line number) information for logging exceptions etc. in a production environment. The DLLs are installed in the GAC. Is there any way to do this? This article says about putting PDB files in the GAC: You can spot these easily because they will say you need to copy the debug symbols (.pdb file) to the GAC. In and of itself, that will not work. I know this article refers to debugging with VS but I thought it might apply to logging the stacktrace also. I've followed the instructions for the answer to this question except for unchecking Optimize code which they said was optional. I copied the dlls and pdbs into the GAC but I'm still not getting the stack trace information. • Can the same ssh key be used to access two different users on the same server?

  I have an new ubuntu (hardy 8.04) server, it has two users, User1 and User2. User1 is listed in sudoers. I appended my public ssh key to authorized_keys in /home/user1/.ssh/authorized_keys, changed the permissions on user1/.ssh/ to 700 and user1/.ssh/authorized_keys to 600 and both file and folder are owned my User1. Then added I User1 to sshd_config (AllowUsers User1). This works and I can login into User1 debug1: Offering public key: /Users/nick/.ssh/id_rsa debug1: Server accepts key: pkalg ssh-rsa blen 277 debug1: Authentication succeeded (publickey). debug1: channel 0: new [client-session] debug1: Entering interactive session. Last login: Mon Mar 15 09:51:01 2010 from 86.141.61.197 I then copied the authorized_keys file to /home/user2/.shh/ and changed the permissions and ownership and added User2 to AllowUsers in sshd_config (AllowUsers User1 User2). Now when I try to login to User2 it will not authenticate the same public key. debug1: Offering public key: /Users/nick/.ssh/id_rsa debug1: Authentications that can continue: publickey debug1: Trying private key: /Users/nick/.ssh/identity debug1: Trying private key: /Users/nick/.ssh/id_dsa debug1: No more authentication methods to try. • End-to-end kerberos delegated authentication in ASP.NET

  I'm trying to setup an internal website that will contact another backend service within the network on behalf of the user using a HttpWebRequest. I have to use Integrated Windows Authentication on the ASP.NET application as the backend system only supports this type of authentication. I'm able to setup IWA on the ASP.NET application, and it's using kerberos as I expect it to. However when the authentication is delegated to the backend system it doesn't work anymore. This is because the backend system only supports kerberos IWA, but the delegation for some reason - even though the incoming request is kerberos authenticated - converts the authentication to NTLM before forwaring to the backend system. Does anybody know what I need to do on the ASP.NET application in order to allow it to forward the identity using kerberos? I've currently tried the followin but it doesn't seem to work CredentialCache credentialCache = new CredentialCache(); credentialCache.Add(request.RequestUri, "Negotiate", CredentialCache.DefaultCredentials.GetCredential(request.RequestUri, "Kerberos")); request.Credentials = credentialCache; I've also tried to set "Kerberos" where it now says "Negotiate", but it doesn't seem to do much.

• How can I get WWW-Mechanize to login to Wells Fargo's website?

  I am trying to use Perl's WWW::Mechanize to login to my bank and pull transaction information. After logging in through a browser to my bank (Wells Fargo), it briefly displays a temporary web page saying something along the lines of "please wait while we verify your identity". After a few seconds it proceeds to the bank's webpage where I can get my bank data. The only difference is that the URL contains several more "GET" parameters appended to the URL of the temporary page, which only had a sessionID parameter. I was able to successfully get WWW::Mechanize to login from the login page, but it gets stuck on the temporary page. There is a <meta http-equiv="Refresh"... tag in the header, so I tried $mech->follow_meta_redirect but it didn't get me past that temporary page either. Any help to get past this would be appreciated. Thanks in advance. • Can't submit new object to WCF DataService because of Primary Key constraint

  I've got a SQL database that uses Guid's for PK's and upon insert, it generates a NewId(). I have an EF data context setup pointing to that database with the primary keys setup with the Entity key:true, Setter:private and StoreGeneratedPattern:Identity because I want the DB to manage the keys and not have code set the PK property. I have an OData (System.Web.Data.Services.DataService) endpoint to access this data (just like: Hanselman did. I have another app that has a service reference to this service. Upon trying to create a new object from this reference (i.e. Product), the ProductId Primary Key is being defaulted to Guid.Empty when doing var serviceEntities = new ServiceEntities(serviceUri); //OData endpoint var product = new Product(); product.Name = "New Product"; serviceEntities.AddToProducts(product); serviceEntities.SaveChanges(); // error happens here When debugging, I look at the Product.ProductId property and it's set to Guid.Empty. When called SaveChanges, I do not want the ProductId field to be sent to the service. The response I get is: Error processing request stream. Property 'ProductId' is a read-only property and cannot be updated. Please make sure that this property is not present in the request payload. Is there a way to do this or what can I do to get this setup correctly and still have the DB generated the keys. Here is the same setup as the Product example above.

• IIS as proxy to rails/mongrel - force a proxied host to generate REMOTE_USER

  Hello -- Using Application Request Routing I have IIS 7.5 set up as a reverse proxy to a Mongrel service which is serving a rails app. IIS is set up to use Windows Auth and is working but I cannot access the REMOTE_USER variable in the rails app to get at current user's identity. I have inspected the request object in rails and I don't have any other variables like LOGON_USER, HTTP_REMOTE_USER, AUTH_USER, etc. I am trying to find a way to inject the REMOTE_USER variable into Mongrel's server variables. This post describes what I am looking for using mod_rewrite on Apache but I am having trouble recreating this rule for iis. this is the rewrite rule from the post mentioned above for Apache RewriteEngine On RewriteCond %{LA-U:REMOTE_USER} (.+) RewriteRule . - [E=RU:%1] Header add X-Forwarded-User %{RU}e I tried reproducing the rule in IIS and got a URL Rewrite Module error ("The condition's expression "%{LA-U:REMOTE_USER}" is invalid."). I know I'm probably using Apache syntax where IIS syntax is needed but am not sure how to proceed at this point. Any help greatly appreciated.
