• DB fields not showing up in association custom queries?

  I have a notification list that the user can select different show options for different kinds of notifications along with how many results are returned. I'm keeping them in the user model because I want the custom sort to stay with the user between sessions. Here is the association in my user model: has_many :notifications, :class_name => "Notification", :foreign_key => "user_id", :conditions => ["won = ? and lost = ? and paid = ?", self.prefs_won, self.prefs_lost, self.prefs_paid], :limit => self.prefs_results.to_s But when I use the above code, Rails throws me an "unknown method" error for self.prefs_won. It is definitely a field in my database and set as a boolean value, but Rails can't find it... what's the problem?

• Make the footer stick at the bottom of the page

  Here is the site (made in Wordpress): http://miladalami.com I want to have the footer stick at the bottom of the page. Any solutions in how I do this? I have already tried cssstickyfooter.com and xs4all.nl/~peterned/examples/csslayout1.html but none worked as I wanted. What happened was that the main body of the page overlapsed the footer. I have been wrapping my head around this the past two days and Im lost. Is there anyone that can solve this puzzle?

• Java Authenticator on a per connection basis?

  I'm building an Eclipse plugin that talks to a REST interface which uses Basic Authentication. When the authentication fails I would like to popup my plugin's settings dialog and retry. Normally I could use the static Authenticator.setDefault() to setup an authenticator for all HttpURLConnection's for this, but since I am writing a plugin I don't want to overwrite Eclipse's default Authenticator (org.eclipse.ui.internal.net.auth); I thought of setting my custom Authenticator before loading and putting Eclipse's default back afterwards, but I imagine this will cause all sorts of race issues with multithreading so I quickly lost that notion. Google searches yield all sorts of results basically telling me it's not possible: The Java URLConnection API should have a setAuthenticator(Authenticator) method for making it easier to use this class in multi-threaded context where authentication is required. Source If applications contains few third party plugins and each plugin use its own Authenticator what we should do? Each invocation of "Authenticator.setDefault()" method rewrite previously defined Authenticator... Source Are there any different approaches that might help me overcome this issue?

• Python: UTF-8 problems (again...)

  I have a database which is synchronized against an external web source twice a day. This web source contains a bunch of entries, which have names and some extra information about these names. Some of these names are silly and I want to rename them when inserting them into my own database. To rename these silly names, I have a standard dictionary as such: RENAME_TABLE = { "Wsird" : "Weird", ... } As you can see, this is where UTF-8 comes into play. This is the function which performs renaming of all the problematic entries: def rename_all_entries(): all_keys = RENAME_TABLE.keys() entries = Entry.objects.filter(name__in=all_keys) for entry in entries: entry.name = RENAME_TABLE[entry.name] entry.save() So it tries to find the old name in RENAME_TABLE and renames the entry if found. However, I get a KeyError exception when using RENAME_TABLE[entry.name]. Now I'm lost, what do I do? I have... # -*- coding: utf-8 -*- ...in the top of the Python file.

  I'm trying to figure out dates in Java and am completely lost. Do I use Date? Use epoch time? Gregorian Calendar? Let's say I have a want to store a date, then later compare it to other dates. For example, I've stored a date "10/27/2013". Then, I want to later compare it to dates entered later to see if a later date is identical to "10/27/2013", or if just the day, year, or month matches? What's the best way to do this?

• Resizing Ubuntu x64 Server Partition with VirtualBox not reflected in OS

  I've already resized my virtual disk with VirtualBox, but now need to extend the partition of my Ubuntu VM itself. I thought I was on my way with GParted live CD, but after I resize the "extended" filesystem partition, and then the child "lvm2 pv" filesystem partition to fill the unallocated space, df -h still shows the original disk size after I reboot into the VM. Any tips on this? I've scoured the webs tirelessly. Should I be resizing the boot (/dev/sda1) partition instead? Should I try to convert my lvm2 to ext4 or something? I'm lost on this. Note: VirtualBox hard disk is "dynamic". Specs: VBox 4.2.18 Ubuntu 12.04.2 amd64 Gparted 0.16.2-1b-i486

  I have a local server installed on my Mac (MAMP). My question is, where I can find the php functions in my computer? What is the path to the functions folder? For instance, rand() time() isset() explode(). I would like to se the code to learn of it. I have a while looking for it, but I can't find it. Or is it that is already compiled? • Beside SVN, how do you manage your development vs test vs production source code?

  I'm working on a very large project with three phases of source code. Development source code: changes rapidly every second, and checked by our QA Test environment code: released to clients' QA department (released every 2-3 weeks) Production environment: after confirmed ok by client QA its released to prod. (every few months) The system (governmental web app) is very large to track changes,bugs and hot fixes, sometimes the Testers could ask for a change, some other times the Production could ask for a hot fix or small update. The problem is, when the Test or Production request changes, the development code is already changed a lot, and they always warn us they want only that small fix, do not upload anything new with it. The question, how should i manage the code for the 3 phases, and get back to Test or Production code any tie and fix that small one thing (reflecting the change to the current Development as well)? Note: making a branch each time is too much, and i don't want the developers to be lost between updating the mainstream, the branch and the Test code!

  Okay, I have searched online and even looked in a couple of books for the answer because I can't understand the apple documentation for the NSTimer. I am trying to implement 2 timers on the same view that each have 3 buttons (START - STOP - RESET). The first timer counts down from 2 minutes and then beeps. The second timer counts up from 00:00 indefinitely. I am assuming that all of the code will be written in the methods behind the 3 different buttons but I am completely lost trying to read the apple documentation. • TimePicker Android and a Database

  I have a database with a table which contains a start time and an end time. The user has to select both through the Android app, and then I have to retrieve the two times into my database. For now, I have 2 TimePicker in my xml file, and I have 2 TimePicker in my java file TimePicker start_time = (TimePicker) findViewById(R.id.timePickerStart); Can someone help me know how I should retrieve the times, and use them in java (add a listener, etc.). • what is the accepted naming convention for int, string, array, list, object, etc...

  The company I work for now uses a set naming convention for their C# variables such as iSomeName for int, sSomeName for string, aSomeName for arrays, bSomeName for boolean, dSomeName for datetime and so on. My previous employer did not use the i, s, a, b and d prefixes and just named the variables a good understandable name. My impression is that these prefixes lost favor a while ago and from what I read it is not the current trend. It seems fine to me either way as long as the variable is descriptive enough to understand what it is doing but I was wondering what the now-a-day accepted practice is for naming variables?

I've seen many examples of this app but none of them see to help my problem is as follows: Write a Sub procedure "DisplaySquare" to display the solid square. The size should be specified by the integer parameter "size". The character that fills the square should be specified by the string parameter "fillCharacter. Use a For...Next statement nested within another For...Next statement to create the square. The outer For...Next specifies what row is currently being displayed. The inner For...Next appends all the characters that form the row to a display string.   Memcache in general and on AppEngine in specific is unreliable in the sense that my data may be deleted from the cache for whatever reason at any point in time. However, in some cases there might be cases where a small risk may be worth the added performance using memcache could give, such as updating some data in memcache that gets saved periodically to some other, more reliable storage. Are there any numbers from Google that could give me an indication of the actual probability that a memcache entry would be lost from the cache before its expiration time, given that I keep within my quotas? Are there any reasons other than hardware failure and administrative operations such as machines at the data centers being upgraded/moved/replaced that would cause entries to be removed from memcache prematurely?

• Writing different structs to a file in C++? [on hold]

  I need a way to write structures of three different kinds to a binary file, which later has to be searched. (As in, for example, struct A has two fields, an int and a char; struct B has int and a long; I need to output all structures whose int equals the one given from keyboard). I understand how to write structs of the same kind to a file and how to search them, but here I am just lost, best thing I came up with is declaring a struct containing all possibly needed fields and leaving the ones I don't need empty, but it really feels wrong, there HAS to be a better way to do that. I've read about binary files and could not find anything relevant, most examples and tutorials deal with writing one data type. Could anyone point me in the right direction? EDIT: I am looking for what @Jerry_coffin called database mode, and will probably use one of the existing database systems for that, best way to go, probably. Thank you everybody for the suggestions

• SqlCE Flush Interval - Will the default setting lead to corruption?

  SqlCE has a parameter set on the Connect String called Flush Interval. It is defined as: The interval time (in seconds) before all committed transactions are flushed to disk. If not specified, the default value is 10. I thought that a committed transaction, by definition, is a transaction that has been flushed to disk, specifically the database file. If a transaction is only stored in RAM then cannot the transaction be easily lost? I thought that transactions were first written to a log file and then applied to the database file itself, so perhaps this parameter could mean the time to wait until the transaction log is applied to the database file? I would have thought that this parameter should be 0.

  A very simple code to illustrate the difference. var x = [0, 3, 1, 2]; console.debug('debug', x); console.log('log', x); // above display the same result x.splice(1, 2); // below display kind of a different result console.debug('debug', x); console.log('log', x); The javascript value is exactly the same but console.log() displays it a bit differently than before applying splice() method. Because of this I lost quite a few hours as I thought splice is acting funny making my array multidimensional or something. I just want to know why does this work like that. Does anyone know? :)

(i assume multiple queries are useless and a pretty ugly method) i know the question is pretty basic but i'm lost here. i'd really appreciate your answer! Thanks in advance
