  • How important is my job title?

    Hi all, I work on two internal, mission critical applications. Let's keep it simple and call them "Foo" and "Bar". Nobody outside of the company has ever heard of them - like I said, they're internal apps. Until now my jobtitle has just been "Software Developer". I've recently discovered that my jobtitle is being changed to "Foo and Bar Developer". I'm a little worried that, should I leave the company, I'll have trouble finding a new job because of my weird job title. My question is this: How important is my job title compared to everything else on my CV (or resume, if you're American)? Am I likely to be rejected by box-ticking HR people who don't realise that "Foo and Bar Developer" is the same as "Software Developer"? Thanks in advance.

  • No Window Options in Cairo Dock

    I'm not even sure how to describe this properly. I'm running Cairo Dock on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS and I've noticed that I no longer have the top bar of my windows. I mean, I have the bar itself, but it's empty aside from the name of the window and the close / resize boxes. For instance, a simple Nautilus window would have, when you move the cursor to the top bar, a list of options such as View / Edit etc. I have nothing like that for any window or application. It's just solid black. This is a huge problem and I'm not sure what the issue is. Has anyone else experienced this?

The hand-written loop: for (std::vector<Foo>::const_iterator it = vec.begin(); it != vec.end(); ++it) { bar.process(*it); } Or the algorithm invocation: #include <algorithm> #include <functional> std::for_each(vec.begin(), vec.end(), std::bind1st(std::mem_fun_ref(&Bar::process), bar)); I wonder if std::for_each is really worth it, given such a simple example already requires so much code. What are your thoughts on this matter?

    This year the Summit registration opens at 6PM on Sunday at the Seattle convention center.  Last year we had a dozen people hanging out, watching the twitter feed on the big monitor and catching up.  All we really needed was a bar and we’d have our own little party going. So this year I’m adding a bar.  I’ve arranged for a cash bar and some stand up tables.  I’m buying the first round for the first 40 or so people that come by.  Come by, register and say Hi.  I’d especially like to encourage first-time attendees to stop by.  This is a low key way to meet some people that will be at the conference.

  • How to add a shortcut for Humble Bundle games in Unity?

    I downloaded some games from the humblebundle, but most of them don't have deb files. They run fine after extracting them and double clicking on the executable, but unity doesn't automatically find them so I can't search for them, or add them to the side bar. I tried to drag the executable onto the side bar, but it just dimmed and didn't do anything once I dropped it. I also tried to right-click on the executable in and clicked on "Make Link", but I couldn't drop that onto the side bar either. I would prefer a solution that does not require using the terminal or editing configuration files by hand if possible.

    After I installed the GNOME shell in Ubuntu, I decided that I didn't like having the "Close/Minimize/Maximize" buttons on the right, so I switched them over to the left using gconftool-2 --set "/apps/metacity/general/button_layout" --type string "close, minimize, maximize:" After resetting the shell, however, I found that with the GTK+ theme, only the close button shows up. Using system title bar and borders will make all the buttons appear, but I really want to use the theme because the system title bar makes the top bar too thick. Logging out and back in didn't fix it, and I tried reinstalling Chrome, but the problem persists.

    I'm having some trouble finding a proper solution to the following architecture problem. In our setting (sketched below) we have 2 data sources, where data source A is the primary source for items of type Foo. A secondary data source exists which can be used to retrieve additional information on a Foo; however this information does not always exist. Furthermore, data source A can be used to retrieve items of type Bar. However, each Bar refers to a Foo. The difficulty here is that each Bar should refer to a Foo which, if available, also contains the information as augmented by data source B. My question is: how to remove the tight coupling between data source A and B?

  • IE HTML Debugger Causing Issues with IE Enhanced Security

    In an effort to debug a Silverlight component on a page in SharePoint I opened the Developer Tools in Internet Explorer.  After choosing the Find > Select Element by Click option my page refreshed for some reason and a small bar appeared at the top of the page reading: You may be trying to access this site from a secured browser on the server. Please enable scripts and reload this page. After a quick look around the internet, some seemed to be suggesting that you have to disable the Internet Explorer Enhanced Security Configuration (IE ESC) in Server Manager.  Since this is one of the very first things I do when creating a VM, I figured the solution did not apply to me.  However, I decided to go ahead and enable IE ESC and then disable it again to see if that would fix the problem, and it did.  So if you see that error message in IE, the bar and you've already got IE ESC disabled, you can just enable it and disable it to get rid of the bar.

    Whenever I'm plugging in my external monitor into my notebook and changing the screen resolution to the maximum state, the desktop will get broken in a way: A third of the whole desktop space is not visible at all. I can see the whole panel as well as the Unity side bar to the left, but the desktop space with all the windows in it is not completely visible. It's blanked out. In case of opening the Unity menu bar, I can type something in it. As soon as close the menu bar, the upper part stays visible and hangs: Any ideas about that issue?

    I thought I already had the time up there in the top bar, and it may have been so in previous Ubuntu versions (don't remember, my Ubuntu laptop is just one of three computers I use). Only that I just noticed - me being someone who never wears a watch, has the cellphone turned off 95% of the time and relying on the computer to tell the time - that there is no time being displayed anywhere, and I had expected it in the top bar on the Unity desktop. I searched around but found no obvious solution, but I'm sure someone immediately knows how I can get my time (back?) into the top bar?

    So, when a website has multiple subdomains: www.example.com foo.example.com bar.example.com What is the best way to use Google Analytics to segment the data? I would prefer have access to 'All Data', 'Data from foo.example.com', and 'Data from bar.example.com'. I tried setting up 3 different views, and setting a filter on the foo/bar views that says: Include only traffic from the ISP domain that are equal to foo.example.com. However, I am not seeing any data collected into that View. I do, however, see all data in the 'All Data' view, but I can't figure out how to segment the data. I am including the analytics.js in the application.haml layout, which is always loaded in this app. Thanks!

  • Should I use events in this case?

    I'm creating a video player, like a custom YouTube player. All of the GUI elements (progress bar, video player, play button, ...) are different classes, but I obviously need them to communicate. When the progress bar is clicked, or the slider is moved, it needs to send a "seek(x)" command to the video player. Similarly, the video player needs to update the progressbar every frame. Currently I'm doing this by having almost all elements have a link to each other. So when I create the progress bar, I'm telling it where the video player is. But after a while this becomes more and more complicated, and I'm wondering if events would be a better way to do this. Or a main controller class that has all the connections. What should I do?

    I am implementing a game on both Desktop and Android. The Desktop version will just rely on the keyboard to handle the user input on the game screen, whilst the Android one will have to have a set of buttons placed in a bar at the bottom of the game screen, using a Stage. Consequently, I am expecting the game world to take up the entire space available on the Desktop screen, whilst on Android it should expand to the entire width of the screen, and to the screen height minus the height of the buttons bar I've mentioned. What would be an appropriate approach of handling space sharing between the game world and the buttons bar? Thank you.

    Hi all, I am gathering performance data via WMI and would like to avoid having to use an account in the Administrators group for this purpose. The target machine is running Windows Server 2003 with the latest SP/updates. I've done what I believe to be the appropriate configuration to allow our user access to WMI (similar to what is described here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa393266.aspx). Here are the specific steps that were followed: Open Administrative Tools - Computer Management: Under Computer Management (Local) Expand Services and Applications, right click WMI Control and select properties. In the Security tab, expand Root, highlight CIMV2, click Security (near bottom of window); add Performance Monitor Users and enable the options : Enable Account and Remote Enable. ­Open Administrative Tools - Component Services: Under Console Root go to Component Services- Computers - Right click My Computer and select properties, select the COM security tab, in “Access Permissions” click "Edit Default" select(or add then select) “Performance Monitor Users” group and allow local access and remote access and click ok. In “Launch and Activation Permissions” click “Edit Default” select(or add then select) “Performance Monitor Users” group and allow Local and Remote Launch and Activation Permissions. ­Open Administrative Tools - Component Services: Under Console Root go to Component Services- Computers - My Computer - DCOM Config - highlight “Windows Management and Instrumentation” right click and select properties, Select the Security tab, Under “Launch and Activation Permissions” select Customize, then click edit, add the “Performance Users Group” and allow local and remote Remote Launch and Remote Activation privileges. I am able to connect remotely via WMI Explorer but when I perform this query: Select CommandLine, ProcessId FROM Win32_Process I get a valid result but every row has an empty CommandLine.   • Java applet class never found

    I am having a problem with the java plugins of all three major browsers: chromium, firefox and Internet Explorer. The issue is that applets will always fail to load and yield errors no matter what website or what applet I am trying to use. I can not see any of the example applets on oracle's website; I can not launch the minecraft browser applet; nor can I launch any applet across the web using any browser. I always receive a "class not found:AppletClassHere.class" error. I know that my browser plugin must be working correctly because I can launch the Cisco Nac applet each time I connect to my network and I can launch my own simple applets offline. I am connecting to the internet through a vpn in case that is important. It also seems like a lot of other people I know are having this issue. Re-installing the plugin does not appear to fix the issue. I am asking this question to find out the cause of this problem, and any possible solutions. Thank you.

    Is there anything more convenient than using RCDefaultApp or Magic Launch, or just repeatedly pressing the Change All buttons in Finder's information panels? I thought about writing a shell script that would modify the CFBundleDocumentTypes arrays in Info.plist files. But each app has multiple keys (sometimes an icon) that would need to be changed. lsregister can't be used to make specific modifications to the Launch Services database. $ `locate lsregister` -h lsregister: [OPTIONS] [ <path>... ] [ -apps <domain>[,domain]... ] [ -libs <domain>[,domain]... ] [ -all <domain>[,domain]... ] Paths are searched for applications to register with the Launch Service database.
