• File corruption when copying different file on raid 1

  I have a RAID 1 configuration of 2 1TB drives on a Fedora 12 box. Most of what is stored there are video files that are numerical labeled. The problem I'm having is that I had one of the video files get corrupted. I copied a replacement from a backup and replaced the bad file and now it works fine. However, after doing this the next numbered file goes from 350MB to 200KB and all but about .5 second of video disappears. If I then replace that file it happens to the next one down the line. Ex: Replace corrupt file 1.avi and file 2.avi shrinks to 200KB. Replace now corrupted 2.avi and it works but 3.avi gets screwed up. I have run SMART tests on the drives and they report fine. Does anyone have any tests I can run to try to figure out what is going on? EDIT: It is a two disk software RAID 1 with an ext4 filesystem

• machine crash when connecting to external harddisk

  i recently had a problem with my laptop. when i booted up the machine, i would get a SMART failure error message and when i pressed F1 to continue, it would take a very long time to boot and it would come back to the same error message again. thinking that my hard disk was dying, i bought a new hard disk and installed on my laptop and so now my laptop is alright. however i need to recover data from that old hard disk, so i bought an external hard disk case and placed the old hard disk onto the case and connected to my laptop with USB. the first few times when i connected, i could see the files from the old hard disk and managed to copy some files over although it took extremely long to transfer. but now whenever i connect to the old hard disk, after a few minutes, my laptop will crash and re-boot. do you think my old hard disk is dead beyond repair? or you can offer some help here? any assistance would be appreciated!

• CA ArcServe r11.1 - have to switch Tape Drive Offline then Online to finish backup

  Ill keep it brief, I have an HP Ultrium 1 in a server currently running CA ArcServe r11.1. I have 5 daily backup tapes, each of which are new. 3 of the 5 work fine without intervention but 2 of them stop at varying points through the backup asking for a new tape, even though that tape is not full. The way I have found around this is to switch the tape drive offline for 10 minutes then switch it back online, whilst the backup is still running. Has anyone ever seen this before? If so, any ideas how to permanently fix this. If all else fails just some pointers in the right direction. Thanks

• Solaris TCP/IP performance tuning

  I am trying to tune a high message traffic system running on Solaris. The architecture is a large number (600) of clients which connect via TCP to a big Solaris server and then send/receive relatively small messages (.5 to 1K payload) at high rates. The goal is to minimize the latency of each message processed. I suspect that the TCP stack of the server is getting overwhelmed by all the traffic. What are some commands/metrics that I can use to confirm this, and in case this is true, what is the best way to alleviate this bottleneck? PS I posted this on StackOverflow originally. One person suggested snoop and dtrace. dtrace seems pretty general - are there any additional pointers on how to use it to diagnose TCP issues?

• Nginx redirect one domain to another

  Hello, I have two domain's set up on my server. Domain 1 is configured with google apps so that mail.domain1.com goes to google's mail. However, I would like domain1.com to redirect to domain2.com. Currently in my nginx.conf file I had server { listen 80; server_name domain2.com .domain1.com; rewrite ^/(.*) http://domain2.com permanent; root /home/demo/apps/cjl/public; passenger_enabled on; rails_spawn_method smart; } When I did this Firefox popped up a "Redirect not configured correctly" error and said that it thought that the redirect would create a never ending loop. I'm wondering how to set this up and any help would be appreciated. Thank you!

• How can I create a pen drive that I can boot from, and then install Win98 from?

  I have a HP Compaq t5515 thin client computer with a flash disk and USB port. I want to put Win98 onto it, replacing whatever is on there now (I think it is some Linux-based thing). I can find stuff about putting Win98 onto a pen drive and running from that, but I can't find any info about installing Windows 98 from a pen drive onto a sep[arate system. Is it just a matter of making the pen drive bootable to DOS copying the contents of a Win98 installation CD onto the pen drive booting the HP machine from the pen drive running SETUP.EXE from the pen drive? Any pointers appreciated. TIA

• ASUS EeePC 1001PX, hard disk clicking in Ubuntu Maverick

  I just received my new Asus EeePC 1001px netbook. After installing Ubuntu 10.10 on it, I've noticed that my hard drive is making a clicking noise. Now this is not a loud clicking noise nor it's constant (only sounds occasionally and when hard disk is not writing or reading anything). Another strange thing is, this only happens when netbook is using battery power, the moment I plug in AC power clicking stops. Additionally I noticed that when I go into BIOS I can hear the click only once, same thing happens if I boot Ubuntu from USB. That led me to believe the problem is within operating system. I did all the surface scans and SMART tests and everything seems to be fine. Now noise sounds like heads are trying to "park" themselves so I tried disabling "spin down" option in Power Management but it didn't help. Any idea?

• Prevent Mac OS X from prompting disk initialization/formatting

  I have a TrueCrypt partition. When I insert it in Mac OS X, it always prompt me to initialize the hard disk. Is there a way to prevent Mac OS X from detecting uninitialize hard disk? [UPDATE] By the way, as Truecrypt suggested while I'm in Windows, I must make partitions so the OS won't detect the hard drive as uninitialized. Windows respected that the drive already have contents by the mere fact that it has partitions, while Mac OS X thinks that it is still uninitialized. I think Mac OS X is trying to be smart by detecting if each partition has a valid filesystem id/marker.

  Possible Duplicate: Clicks or ticks every minute when HDD is idle My HDD is a My passport... It's 2 weeks old. I hear this tick or click followed by another one about 8-9 secs later, and they repeat every minute almost exactly... They usually happen and the LED light blinking.. It's not like the other clicks you hear that indicate any inevitable HDD failure, it's much lower in volume. I don't know what that is, however it's different than the rest of the HDD usual sounds...It's close to the sound of the mouse click. It sometimes also happens when I access a file on the drive mostly after being idle for a while, sometimes randomly not really sure... The drive though is working well, the SMART report comes out OK and without warning, and disk management shows it healthy... What could be the cause of this??

• How can I shut down all my Virtual Machines when my UPS kicks in?

  I have a Dell T610 running ESXi4, an APC Smart UPS 1000VA and a local "console" machine running Vista and the vSphere 4 Essentials pack. A dedicated management network is in place between the T610 and the Vista machine. We have 4 VMs: SBS 2003, Server 2003 running Terminal Services, and two XP Machines. Ideally, when the UPS is forced to use battery power [for a set number minutes], I would like to gracefully shutdown all the VMs, then the ESXi, then the console machine. The latter two are not strictly a priority, but the VMs within ESXi are. Google provided lots of deprecated scripts that used to work on ESXi 3.x or similar, however I am unable to find what they were deprecated by. What do I need to be able to do this? I have Powerchute Express as supplied with the UPS, but would be willing to pay for software if required.

• Need Help Debugging BSOD

  For the last few days I've been getting a BSOD at least once a day. Apparently the crash has been caused by ntkrpamp.exe and searching on google has revealed that the issue seems to be related to bad RAM. I have run memtest and my RAM modules have no errors on them. I'm pretty sure the issue is related to drivers, but I can't figure out which one. I'm not an expert in interpreting the output of windbg so any pointers would be greatly appreciated. Here is my analysis with WinDbg. It was too long to paste it here. One strange thing i noticed is that my Windows XP is in Spanish (SP3) and ntkrpamp.exe copyright info seems to be in portuguese. Not sure if that could be an issue, perhaps i have the wrong ntkrpamp.exe... Thanks a lot in advance

• Cisco ASA - Unable to create "range" type of network object on 8.2

  I'm wanting to block a range of ip addresses on my Cisco ASA 5520 (8.2) using ASDM 6.4. In the help files/cisco documentation, it says, just create a network object with a "range" type, and use that in a blocking access rule... When I'm accessing the ASA (8.2) with ASDM 6.4, I go to configfirewallobjectnetwork objects & groups, then click "add" to add the IP range as a "network object", I get the following 4 fields to fill out: Name: IP address: Netmask: Description: That's all... In the context-sensitive help files, it says that there should be a Type drop-down to select, with "range" being one of the options, but there is no "Type" drop-down list... If I try to create a "network object group" instead of just "network object", then I get a "Type" drop down list, but it only contains two options: network & host (No "Range" option here either) Can someone help me figure out how to block a range of IP's, using the current 8.2 version on the ASA? • Solid Edge ST6 - 2D Modeling: dimensions

  I'm currently making some 2D drawings in Solid Edge ST6. I have several circles which I need to change so that they have an equal diameter and equal space between both circles, etc... Currently my drawing looks a bit messy with all the dimensions that I use: I use the Smart Dimension tool and the Distance Between tool but I have no clue to make my drawing more readable by adding less dimensions. Is there a way to copy/paste dimensions or let a circle follow the dimensions of one other circle? I hope you understand the question. • MySQL maintenance - how to clear the buffer?

  We have a server running our web app (PHP / MySQL) which is SLOW. My predecessor says that: "We use to do database maintenance, which use to clear the buffer, cached and unwanted variables." And I wonder what on earth he means with that statement? Does he mean a simple optimize of the tables? Or the query cache? I understand MySQL but don't really know what he is describing. • Windows webserver monitor and notifier service

  I'm looking for a software tool/service, preferably opensource/free, which will run on a Windows 2003 r3 standard server which will monitor bandwidth usage of all the websites it's hosting (a break down by site would be very useful) and also send out notifications if IIS or another service (as defined) stops responding. A web interface to see the bandwidth usage and other details would be very useful. I've personally got a vps which does this kinda of monitoring but I believe this is more linked into the host itself. Does anyone have any pointers? All help is appriciated. Cheers

• What is a SIP 'Gateway' and how is different from a SIP Proxy/Registrar?

  Recently I started looking at SIP implementation for a future work. I was reading (Googling) about what SIP means and how to go about implementing a end-to-end SIP enabled VoIP network. What I did not get is what use does a SIP Gateway is for? How different is it with respect to SIP proxy servers or a SIP DNS/Locator like server? I understand probably QoS would be one primary factor - like dedicating a set bandwidth for SIP/VoIP specific I/O over a network. Anything else? Can anyone help me with any other hints/pointers? I fully understand that is quite a basic question - but I really couldn't find any text which could clear my doubt about what 'Gateway' would mean in SIP context and what differentiates it from other SIP based network components (like Softphones, Proxies etc). • How anti-virus on the host machne affects performance of virtual machines?

  I'm diagnosing some issue with Oracle virtual box where virtual machine sometimes perform terribly slow (much slower then notebook with worse configuration): Notebook i7 (2 cores with HT = 4 logical CPUs), 4GB RAM, 5400 rpm disk, Win 7 64bit Virtual machine (Oracle Virtual Box) Host: i7 (4 cores with HT = 8 logical CPUs, 12 GB RAM, system runs from SSD, virtual machine from 7200 rpm disk, Win 7 64bit) Virtual machine: 4 cores assigned, 8 GB RAM assigned, Win 2008 R2 Enterprise (64 bit) Virtual machine uses bridge to separate network interface (machine has two) VPN for network communication No other virtual machine runs on the host Host has installed ESET Smart Security All SW is updated with last version. My question is if anti-virus on the host machine can somehow affect performance of the virtual machine and if so how can I turn it off without turning the anti-virus itself?

• Choosing a home network layout

  I have a server, 4 PC's, a network printer, a switch and an ADSL modem. Currently the server runs Red Hat 9 and sits between the internet and the other PCs like in http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/1/12/Sample-network-diagram.png I have bought a new server PC to replace the old one, and I plan to install Fedora Core linux on it. The server acts as web and file server. The PCs all run Windows. Alternatively, I could connect the new server and all PCs to the switch, and connect the switch to the modem. (Sorry, couldn't find an image.) What are the pros and cons of these network layouts? Eg. in terms of reliability, security and flexibility? I am not a Linux guru but know of (and am not afraid of) iptables, dhcpd et al. Thank you for any tips, pointers and links.

• Raid recovery in gigabyte GA-8I945 Pro

  This was a working machine until a few days ago. And now it won't boot into the OS, during startup if makes clicking sounds (I think from one of the drives). Installed OS: Windows 2003 Web edition Hardware: Gigabyte GA-8I945P Pro , 2*160G Sata in RAID1 configuration , 2 Volumes – 25G and the rest. When I installed windows on it, during setup, I pressed F6 and used ICH7DH drivers of RAID. The manual for the MOBO says: Step 1: After the POST memory test begins and before the operating system boot begins, look for a message which says "Press to enter Configuration utility" (Figure 4). Press CTRL+ I to enter the RAID BIOS setup utility. But the machine never shows this message. BIOS SATA RAID/AHCI Mode is set to RAID. Any ideas or pointers on what I can do to recover my data? Basically, I want to do a test, to ultimately have a Virtual Machine/Image that can be run on a separate server using the vmplayer app I've seen docs that discuss using the GUI to create the VM, but haven't found any (yet) that discuss how to accomplish this using the command line approach. thanks...

• Dell Power Edge R515 - Replacing a Bad Hard Drive in a RAID

  I've ordered a new hard drive to replace a bad one in a Dell Power Edge R515. The manual covers obvious topics regarding physical replacing of hard drives, but I've never done this before on a production server where RAID is involved. I've heard people talk about this topic, and I've heard that some servers have RAID controllers that are smart enough to allow you to just put in the new drive (hot swap), and then the server will know automatically how to rebuild that drive to be what the old one was to the system. Where do I find the proper procedure for replacing a failed hard drive on a live production Dell Power Edge R515? Can someone with experience tell me how easy or hard this usually is?

  I have some decent HP Proliants server that come with "HP Smart Array P410i Controller" enabled, I am using these boxes to set up a Hadoop cluster and I know, RAID is for sure a no-no for Hadoop since the application itself will take care of data redundancy and extra intelligence provided by RAID won't be helpful and might turn down the performance. I tried to disable the devices at the BIOS and the box cannot even access the disk afterwards. So I am assuming the controller is sitting between disks and mother board, and we have to turn it on and configure it to "level0" or something like that. I am wondering what should I do to "disable" the RAID functionality so it will fit into the Hadoop environment.

• How can I troubleshoot SSD disconnection problems on Windows 7?

  I have a small SSD (Transcend StoreJet TS256GESD200K) which I am using on several computers. The drive is formatted with NTFS and recently I started noticing disconnects. Normally one probably wouldn't notice (you don't even get the notification sound in Windows when it disconnects), but since I use USBDLM and run a VM from that SSD, I get to see this first-hand. How could I best figure out whether the problem is the hardware (SSD, USB socket, USB cable or something in the PC) or software? In short: how can I locate the source of the disruption so that I can work on removing the problem? Side-note: SMART status for the SSD is clean.
