• tunneling x11vnc through ssh on a non standard port to ubuntu computer tightvnc

  I have been stuck with setting up my virtual desktop on my ubuntu laptop. I am running ubuntu to ubuntu with x11vnc I start the process on my laptop as follows: " ssh -L5904:localhost:5900 -p Port remoteuser@remoteip." That command works, then I start x11vnc server, "x11vnc -noncache -once -shared -rfbauth ~/.vnc/passwd." This command works and starts connection. Then I open another window on my laptop and type, export VNC_VIA_CMD='/usr/bin/ssh -2 -c aes128-cbc -x -p Port -l User -f -: %L:%H:%R %G sleep 20' (not sure if works). then I type, vncviewer -endcodings Tight -depth 8 -quality 1 -via IPofremotemachine -u remoteuser localhost:01. The first time it work but from now on it just gives me the vncviewer -help screen everytime. I type in the password for my remote machine and then shows -help screen for vncviewer. • How important is the uniqueness of your domain name?

  I've finally come up with a domain name that I like and is available. The name is nonsensical and doesn't translate into anything meaningful in any language, as far as I know. It's something like "FOOBARite". (Don't steal that!) I'm wondering about a few search issues. Results-wise, searching for it in Google currently returns about 15k results, none of which are relevant (dead Twitter pages, various unpopular online handles, and botched french translations). However, Google starts off with a spelling suggestion, which removes a letter. ("Did you mean: FOOBARit?") That returns about 250k results for several different and unrelated websites/organizations by that name. One is some technology provider, another is a sign-language organization, another is the name of a font... None of them seem particularly popular, there's not that much activity on any of those pages. Anyway, the two are pronounced differently, they're just a letter off. Should I go with my idea or is this one-letter variation going to cause me problems? If my site becomes ranked well enough, will Google's spelling suggestion go away? I don't want users to search for my site name and be told they've spelled it wrong.

• Entity system in Lua, communication with C++ and level editor. Need advice.

  Hi!, I know this is a really difficult subject. I have been reading a lot this days about Entity systems, etc... And now I'm ready to ask some questions (if you don't mind answering them) because I'm really messed. First of all, I have a 2D basic editor written in Qt, and I'm in the process of adding entitiy edition. I want the editor to be able to receive RTTI information from entities to change properties, create some logic being able to link published events to published actions (Ex:A level activate event throws a door open action), etc... Because all of this I guess my entity system should be written in scripting, in my case Lua. In the other hand I want to use a component based design for my entities, and here starts my questions: 1) Should I define my componentes en C++? If I do this en C++ won't I loose all the RTTI information I want for my editor?. In the other hand, I use box2d for physics, if I define all my components in script won't it be a lot of work to expose third party libs to lua? 2) Where should I place the messa system for my game engine? Lua? C++?. I'm tempted to just have C++ object to behave as servers, offering services to lua business logic. Things like physics system, rendering system, input system, World class, etc... And for all the other things, lua. Creation/Composition of entities based on components, game logic, etc... Could anyone give any insight on how to accomplish this? And what aproach is better?. • How can I run and jump at the same time?

  I'm having some trouble with the game I started. http://testing.fyrastudio.com/lab/tweetOlympics/v0.002/ The thing is that i have an athlete running and he must jump at the same time. A race with obstacles. I have him running (with pressing the letter Q repeateadly). I also have him jumping (with letter P) But the thing is that when he runs and jumps at the same time, he seems to be jumping at the same place, instead of going forward with the jump... any ideas how can I fix this?? • Web development and tips for building a website and the advantages of using HTML 5 in the site

  I am trying to make a website for my college, and the program starts from jan 13 and we get 15 days of time to develop a running site. The best site will become the college site. I am participating, for all these days i used to participate in C and C++ contests and also won a few contests, now i am really into web dev for the last 2 months. I knew HTML long ago recently i brushed up on it and learnt javascript from "javascript and jquery the missing manual"(sorry for not adding the link) and recently bought "PHP and MySQL web development" and I am going on fine with it, but still a lot of pages to cover in that book. After this what do i need to know ajax is one language to concentrate on, what else do i need to do to make this project up and running. Can someone let me know the tricks of this trade and complete information to build a site like this. Right now i am good with javascript HTML and CSS and thats it, what else I am studying HTML5 and CSS3 its pretty fast and neat. The info on site is a college website which includes students profiles where the have to register their info with college id number and pretty much thats it. Think of it as a college site + a social networking site for students, where they can upload there pics and videos pdf books etc.

• Ubuntu won't load, freezes on purple screen

  Last time I restarted my computer, I could not get Ubuntu to load; the screen would either go black, or would hang at the purple screen indefinitely. I have had some graphics problems in the past, but had put 'nomodeset' after 'quiet splash' in the grub command line, which at least let Ubuntu load. That doesn't work now, and doesn't work if I remove it. I looked up some answers, such as this one: Purple start screen - no splash screen However, when I enter the root in recovery mode in grub, I always get errors when I run those command lines and it won't let me modify the files. Also, if I run in recovery mode and then choose 'resume normal boot', it will continue. But instead of getting a usual interface, I get a black screen that asks for my username and password. I enter these, and it tells me I'm in Ubuntu 12.04, but I'm still on a black screen with texts. It also informs me that there are updates to install. When I use the command 'sudo apt-get update', it starts to retrieve the information, but then the screen goes blank after a couple of seconds and I can't do anything anymore. Any ideas?

• Ubuntu Boot Slow - Late Drive Access

  So I just installed Ubuntu on a brand new Samsung 840 Pro SSD and have noticed that it is slower than expected. The LED access light doesn't start blinking until after 20 seconds or so have passed, after which the boot up seems to actually start. Does anyone have any ideas as to why this is happening? I have Windows 7 installed on a separate SSD and use Windows Loader as the main loader. Windows Loader points to GRUB2, from which I then start Ubuntu up. The 20 seconds count that I mentioned earlier starts AFTER I select Ubuntu 14.04.1 from the GRUB2 menu. Any help is appreciated. EDIT: I forgot to mention that I have only one partition for / and /home. I intend on using a shared NTFS drive for my documents and other personal files, so I had no need for the /home. I did not make a /swap since I have 12 GB of RAM. I also did not make a /boot since I was told that it's not really necessary in my case.

• Should CV contain cases where certain party fools me and not pay salary? Is it "holiday" time or not?

  Suppose I am fooled to work in a start-up or a company that has been a very small over a long time, let say 10 years. I work them 3 months and I really enjoy the work -- I learn a lot of new skills such as Haskell, MapReduce, CouchDB and many other little things. Now the firm did not pay any salary: A) I may be unskilled, B) I did not meet some deadline (I don't know because I am not allowed to speak to the boss but I know that I am not getting any payment) or C) I was fooled. Some detail about C I heard that the firm have had similar cases from my friend, "The guy X was there and he said he does not trust the firm at all so he went to other firm". I don't know what the term "trust" mean here, anyway the firm consists of ignorant drop-outs that hires academic people, a bit irony. They hire people from student-organizations and let them work and promise ok -compensation but -- when you start working the co-employer starts all kind of instructions "Do not work so hard, do not work so long, do not work so much" -- it is like he is making sure you do not feel sad when he does not pay any salary (co-employer is an owner in the firm). Anyway, I learnt a ton in the company but it was very inefficient working. I worked only alone, not really working in a "company". Now should by resume contain references to the firm and the guy who did not pay me anything? Or should my resume read that I worked in XYZ -technologies -- but 1 year's NDA -- what can write here? Now I fear that if I put the firm to my resume: they will lie about my input to my next employer. I feel they are very dishonest. On the other hand, I want to make it sure that I have worked over the time. So: Should my CV contain the not-so-good or even awful employers that may be fooling people to work there? I am pretty sure everyone knows the firm and its habbits, circles are small but people are afraid to speak.

• How to Effectively Create Bullet Patterns

  I'm currently creating a top-down shooter like Touhou. The most important factor of the game is that there are many diverse patterns and ways at which bullets are generated and shot at the player, see this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Nb5Ohbt1Sg#start=0:60;end=9:53; At the moment, I'm using a class "Pattern" which has a series of steps on moving and shooting. However, I feel this method is quite laborous as I have to create a new Pattern for each attack and perhaps new Bullet classes that will implement a certain behavior. This question received a comment suggesting I should look into BulletML for easy creation and storage of bullets with a specific pattern. It looks decent, but it led me to wonder, what other solutions do you have that I should take into consideration? Update My current design is as follows: An example of an implemented pattern: My GigasPattern first executes a teleport which moves Alice to a certain point (X, Y) on the screen. After this is completed, the pattern starts using the Mover to move the sprite around (whereas teleporting has separate effects and animation). These are of no concern, really, as they are quite simple. The Shooter also creates various Attacks, which are classes again that the Shooter can use to create various patterns of bullets, much like the one in the question I posted. Once the Mover has reached it's destination, both it and the shooter stop and return to an inactive state. The pattern completes, is removed by the AI and a new one gets chosen.

• Groovy Grapes in NetBeans IDE

  The start of Groovy Grapes support in NetBeans IDE. Below you see a pure Groovy project, with the Groovy JAR and the Ivy JAR automatically on its classpath. There's also a Groovy script that makes use of a @Grab annotation. In the bottom left, in the Services window, you also see a Grape Repository browser, i.e., showing you the JARs that are currently in ".groovy/grapes". Click the images below to get a better look at them. Next, you see what happens when the project is run. The @Grab annotation automatically starts downloading the JARs that are needed and puts them into the ".groovy/grapes" folder. However, the "no suitable classloader found for grab" error message (which Google shows is a problem for lots of developers) prevents the application from running successfully: The final screenshot shows that I've put the JARs that I need onto the classpath of the project. I did that manually, hoping to learn from the NetBeans Maven project or the NetBeans Gradle project how to do that automatically. Also note that the @Grab annotation has been commented out. Now the error message about the classloader is avoided and the project runs. What needs to happen for Groovy Grapes support to be complete in NetBeans IDE: Figure out how to add the downloaded JARs to the project classpath automatically. Fix the refresh problem in the Grape Repository browser, i.e., right now the refresh doesn't happen automatically yet. Hopefully find a way to get around the grab classloader problem, i.e., it's not ideal that one needs to comment out the annotation. Let the user specify a different Grape repository, i.e., right now ".groovy/grapes" is assumed, but the user should be able to point the repository browser to something different. Maybe there should be support for multiple Grape repositories? Comments/feedback/help is welcome.

• When is it ever ok to write your own development tools? (editor into IDE)

  So I'm foremost using a text editor for coding. It's a very bare bones editor; provides mostly just syntax highlighting. But on rare occasions I also need to debug something. And that's when I have to resort to an IDE (mostly Netbeans, but got fiddly Eclipse/Aptana working as second fallback). For general use however IDEs feel not workable to me. It's a visual thing, being used to console UIs etc. And switching back and forth between a text editor and an IDE is slightly cumbersome too. That's why I'm considering extending the editor, not really into a full-fledged IDE - but at the very least integrate a debug feature. Since I'm working on PHP, it seems not that much effort. The DBGp allows to externalize a debug handler from the editor, so it's just minor integration work and figuring out how to shoehorn a breakpoint feature into the editor (joe btw). And while I've also got time to do that, I'm wondering if this is really worthwhile. In this case it's not a needed development tool. It's just for convenience. And the cause for doing it is basically just not liking the existing solution. While over time I might extend and adapt this debugger thing, it initially will be as circumstantial as Eclipse. It inevitably starts out as poor development tool. Furthermore there is likely not much reuse. (Okay, this is not an important point. Most such software exists sans much of a use case. And also obviously, similar extensions already exist for emacs and vim, so it cannot be completely pointless.) But what's a general guideline on attempting to conoct custom development tools, particularily if they are not really needed but satisfy personal preferences? (Usability enhancement not certain.)

• Can it be a good idea to lease a house rather than a standard office-space for a software development shop? [closed]

  Our lease is up on our US-based office-space in July, so it's back on my radar to evaluate our office-space situation. Two of our partners rather like the idea of leasing a house rather than standard office-space. We have 4 partners and one employee. I'm against the idea at this moment in time. Pros, as I see them Easier to get a good location (minimize commutes) All partners/employees have dogs. Easier to work longer hours without dog-duties pulling people back home More comfortable bathroom situation Residential Internet Rate Control of the thermostat Clients don't come to our office, so this would not change our image The additional comfort-level should facilitate a significantly higher-percentage of time "in the zone" for programmers and artists. Cons, as I see them Additional bills to pay (house-cleaning, yard, util, gas, electric) Additional time-overhead in dealing with bills (house-cleaning, yard, util, gas, electric) Additional overhead required to deal with issues that maintenance would have dealt with in a standard office-space Residential neighbors to contend with The equation starts to look a little nasty when factoring in potential time-overhead, especially on issues that a maintenance crew would deal with at a standard office complex. Can this be a good thing for a software development shop?

• Why can't I boot from portable HD?

  I've been trying to get Ubuntu 10.04-LTS 32-bit desktop installed onto a 250GB FreeAgent Go drive from Seagate. I've been able to install onto a USB flash drive and boot successfully from this. I have installed Ubuntu onto the jump drive using Universal USB Installer, and this was a total success in terms of getting Ubuntu to run off a flash drive. I was unable to accomplish this with the portable HDD. I then, following instructions, attempted to install the OS onto the HDD once booted up from the flash drive. After installing the OS on the HDD, the computer would simply not load the OS when the HDD medium was selected for booting from. However, as there is no System-> Preferences-> Removable Drives and Media I could not complete this step. Is this vital? How do I do this under Ubuntu 10.04? I have formmated the MBR on the HDD and repeated the above, still with no success. I have also browsed some forums that mention there may be something related to spin-up speeds, but nothing explained in detail the issue or how to solve it, and I'm not familiar enough with system booting to understand if this could be an issue. Basically, what I'm trying to do is get Ubuntu to boot off the HDD, I've attempted several things, and the result is, after selecting the HDD from BIOS, the OS never starts booting (after waiting upwards of ten minutes). I just have a white cursor blinking. I can always get it to boot from the jump drive. Related question

• wireless blocked after installing ubuntu 12.04

  I am using a lenovo S10-3 ideapad; had no problems with earlier version of ubuntu, only since installing 12.04. Have looked through many of the questions on the same issue and tried potential solutions but cannot seem to solve my problem. The hardware switch is in 'on' position and the wireless light comes on very briefly (2-3 sec) when the laptop starts up but then goes off and stays off. Pressing FN+F5 does nothing at all. I'd be grateful for any assistance. • Is there an idiot's guide to software licensing somewhere?

  Basically, my knowledge on the issue is zilch other than the fact that open-source and closed-source exists. I'm a web developer (not a designer in the slightest), so I look online for things like icons. I've always been a big fan of these icons, which have a Creative Commons Attribution 2.5 License. As far as I can see, this license says 'do whatever you want with them as long as you have a link back to me somewhere'. Is that assumption correct? Just today I found a new icon set, with a much more confusing license (found here), and to be quite honest I have no idea if I'm allowed to use them or not. At the moment I want to just use them for toy stuff that might never see the light of day, but then my source code is stored on Github, is it legal to store the icons there where they're publicly accessible? If I put them on my personal website that might have ads on it to make me five cents every now and then, is that legal? If I use them on a site that offers a free service to users, is that legal? If that site then starts making money (via things like paid subscriptions) or gets bought out by someone (highly unlikely but one day possible) is that legal? Is there some noob guide out there that explains all this stuff, because I would hate to start using this sort of stuff now only to have to change it all later. Even if I buy the icons, there's still licensing issues that I don't understand! :( And this sort of stuff keeps popping up more and more often...

  Problem Normally I try to have my continuous integration as most a possible toolset free to ensure that no local stuff could have an impact to my build. My Silverlight app references a special compile target in a folder outside my developer tree: <Import Project="$(MSBuildExtensionsPath32)\Microsoft\VisualStudio\v10.0\WebApplications\Microsoft.WebApplication.targets" /> So I copied the stuff from this folder to a local one and changed the call to this target in my csproj: <Import Project="..\..\..\tools\WebApplications\Microsoft.WebApplication.targets" /> And now Visual Studio Conversion Wizard welcomes my with this: Solution Regardless of which line I write – this conversion comes back again and again, if the line has another form than <Import Project="$(MSBuildExtensionsPath32)\Microsoft\VisualStudio\v10.0\WebApplications\Microsoft.WebApplication.targets" /> So it seems that there is no simple way to change this behaviour. Workaraound I must accept, that this line must be in the csproj and to run the build the toolset must be copied to the build server at the correct location. So go to your development machine where Visual Studio is installed and copy the folder “C:\Program Files (x86)\MSBuild\Microsoft\VisualStudio\v10.0\WebApplications” to your build server at the equivalent location.   Xmas wishes to Microsoft: Please provide technologies to let us developers bundle all needed stuff for a project in one developer tree. It should be possible that one checkout starts us up! No additional installations regardless whether it is a developing machine or dedicated build or continuous integration server. • Browser automatically refreshes and Home folder window opens

  I am facing a very strange problem. Out of the blue, my browser starts refreshing itself infinitely. My first guess was firefox is messing up. I installed chrome. But, it happens in chrome as well. Other than that, sometimes my home folder automatically opens and keep opening itself infinitely. My next guess was Mouse is faulty. Replace the mouse - but same things. This happens even if I remove my keyboard. What can be the reason? This started happening after I installed Ubuntu 10.10 few days back. Earlier on windows, everything was working fine. So, I am a bit skeptical to assume that this is a hardware fault. How to fix this problem? • How can I read a portion of one Minecraft world file and write it into another?

  I'm looking to read block data from one Minecraft world and write the data into certain places in another. I have a Minecraft world, let's say "TemplateWorld", and a 2D list of Point objects. I'm developing an application that should use the x and y values of these Points as x and z reference coordinates from which to read constant-sized areas of blocks from the TemplateWorld. It should then write these blocks into another Minecraft world at constant y coordinates, with x & z coordinates determined based on each Point's index in the 2D list. The issue is that, while I've found a decent amount of information online regarding Minecraft world formats, I haven't found what I really need: more of a breakdown by hex address of where/what everything is. For example, I could have the TemplateWorld actually be a .schematic file rather than a world; I just need to be able to read the bytes of the file, know that the actual block data starts always at a certain address (or after a certain instance of FF, etc.), and how it's stored. Once I know that, it's easy as pie to just read the bytes and store them.

  Our OpenWorld 2014 San Francisco conference is about six weeks away.  We have a great lineup of sessions this year.  Our EBS Applications Technology track sessions are listed here, and we'll have a more-detailed article about those soon. One of the advantages of attending OpenWorld is that you can meet face-to-face with senior staff in ATG Development.  You can use these meetings to discusss your questions, requirements, plans, and deployment architectures with us. There are several options for doing this: At general sessions: collar the speaker of your choice after his or her presentation. At the Meet The Experts sessions:  these are first-come first-served round-table discussions Setting up private meetings via your Oracle account manager The last option is best if you have lots of in-depth questions or confidential details about your implementation that cannot be discussed in front of other customers.  Many of this blog's experts, including me, will be attending OpenWorld this year.  If you'd like to meet with us privately, please contact your Oracle account manager to arrange that as soon as possible.  My calendar, in particular, is already starting to fill up.  It is often completely full by the time OpenWorld starts. • Windows Defender Update KB915597 (Definition 1.135.415.0)? Killed My Live Discs

  Here's my problem, for those willing to read for about 2 minutes here's the entire story, http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_vista-windows_update/bsod-after-windows-defender-update-kb915597/a4b5fca3-0274-47b4-97c4-61b34c4c4599, for those who want the short version here's what happened. After windows update automatically updated windows defender to kb915597, my computer starting getting bsods on shut down and start up and started experiencing problems withe the usb ports. So I decided to go to the microsoft answers site for help, I know that was probably my first mistake, so I followed their advice and they turned my computer into a large paper weight. Luckily I make physical backups of my c drive every few months and I have one from back in july, so I figured I'd boot up a ubuntu live disc, copy all my files from the past 2 months to a external drive and just copy the backup back to the c drive, that's where I ran into this problem. When I put in either a ubuntu or kubuntu disc, everything goes well, until it finishes the loading bar then when the OS would presumably start up, the computer resets, I've tried with ubuntu, kubuntu and gparted, and only gparted is able to get to the point where it starts up, but even then when I try to access the internet from it, the computer resets, and when I tried to copy the entire C drive partition to a blank external I wasn't able to. So I figured somehow maybe the C drive had something to do with it, so I unplugged the C drive so my computer was just a 2.8 ghz processor and 2 gigs of ram, should have had no problem starting a live disc but the problem still continues. After doing some googling around I've found whenever windows gets a update with the title KB915597 it's pretty much the kill switch for windows, I've tried contacting microsoft tech support and even managed to directly contact a software engineer but as soon as I mention KB915597 they all just blew me off. I hope anybody who reads this has any idea how to fix this, I'm going to attempt to install ubuntu or kubuntu to a external drive using the same computer and see what happens now.

• How can I get my first-person character in Unity to move to a ledge with an animation?

  I'm trying to get this to happen: The character walks up to a large crate, the player presses a button, and an animation starts playing where the character climbs up on to the crate. (all in first person view). So far I tried this with normal "First Person Controller" Prefab in Unity. My code so far: function OnTriggerStay(other : Collider){ if(other.tag == "GrabZone"){ if(Input.GetKeyDown("e")){ animation.Play("JumpToLedge"); } } } However when i use this on The FPC it will always play from the position the animation is created on. I also tried to create an empty game object, placing the FPC in there. Gives same effect. I also tried just animating the graphics of the FPC alone. This seems to work but since the Character Controller itself is not animated that stays onthe ground. So the whole FPC wont work anymore. Is there anyway i could let this animation play on the local position the player is on at that time? Or can you think of any other logical solution for a grab and climb?

• Dualboot (Win 8 / Ubuntu 13) is stuck at 'switching to clocksource'

  for days I have been crawling the web for solutions to my problem, but couln't find any. Here it is: I got a new Laptop (ASUS Vivobook S200E) with Win 8 OEM preinstalled. I wanted to create a dual-boot system with Ubuntu 13 next to it. I read about UEFI and that I have to turn of Secure Boot and use the existing EFI partition as bootloader for Ubuntu. So I did. I also ran boot-repair reinstalling the GRUB. The result is when I start the computer I get into the boot menu. So far, so good. When I pick Win everthing is fine. But when I choose Ubuntu (recovery) the system starts, but gets stuck at the line '[1.806366] Switching to clocksource tsc'. I already tried other versions of Ubuntu (12.04.2, 12.10). I played with boot-repair (using the recommended fix, setting everything manually). But nothing works. It's always the same issue. I read that it could be a problem concerning graphic drivers, but this I can hardly believe. • how do I fix ati driver issue

  I have little knowledge about ubuntu, but I am learning. Recently, my ubuntu 12.04 required that I update. I noticed that it was updating xorg and other things, after the update I was asked to reboot. I did. now when I start that computer up, it cannot detect any display and refuses to boot from usb. I have no idea how to recover my computer. It simply starts in what is akin to the terminal program and ask for my username and password. After that, I can enter commands. The problem may be because I manually installed drivers by copy pasting from some instructional that I now have no idea where they are, but what it amounts to is that I "built" the drivers. They were working GREAT until this update. I did this because otherwise I was unable to have sound through my hdmi. After I hand built the drivers, they worked great. After this update Ka-blam! nothing... Also, I had okay-ed lots of update sources (though all of them [xorg and such] were the stable versions, not the unstable update sources) Please help and thank you in advance. (if this is posted incorrectly or misplace, please let me know what to do)

• ubuntu 12.10 Lenovo b570e, WiFi connected but not working

  I'm running ubuntu 12.10 liveUSB on a lenovo b570e. It has an atheros wifi card that connects with my home network but I can't browse AT ALL. My network is multiple clients --> router --> isp modem --> Internet I can ping my router (192.168.0.1) but not my isp's modem(192.168.15.1). I have 3 other computers connected to the same router that are working fine (infact i'm posting from one) ping -c 3 google.com unknown host google.com ping -c 3 8.8.8.8 shows 100% packet loss I think its some networking issue. I tried directly connecting it to the router via ethernet cable but same issue. It gets an ip, shows LAN connected but can't browse. If I connect it directly to the isp modem via ethernet cable it starts working fine. Connection Information shows: Interface: 802.11 wifi (wlan0) driver: ath9k security: wpa/wpa2 speed: 150mb/s ip: 192.168.0.106 broadcast: 192.168.0.255 subnet:255.255.255.0 default route: 192.168.0.1 primary dns: 192.168.15.1 i have restarted the router and modem many times. Rebooted the LiveUSB many times.
