  My Windows 7 uses around 16 GB while Windows XP only around 4 GB hard disk space. Seems weird. I use Windows only for gaming so I dont need a lot of stuff they have to offer. What is the best way to reduce Windows 7 size? What can I delete / uninstall and how? Also I'd like reduce RAM and processor usage as much as possible (as long as it doesnt hurt game performance)... turn off all that fancy stuff and so on. What can I turn off and how? • How to connect externally to local network from local network?

  I have this weird problem with a Ventrilo server software running in my linux machine. If I connect the server inside my local network, messages keep lagging etc. But users joining the server outside my network do not experience any problems. So the question is, how can I trick the software inside the local network to make me appear as joining from external network. Do I need some proxy running in some external network machine? Does someone offer this kind of service? All the problems started when I changed my router so I guess it has something to do with the new router, but I haven't found a solution by changing settings in my router so I try to fix this in some other way.

• Chassis fans and power LEDs still work in Hibernate

  I have ASRock Z68 Extreme3 Gen3 motherboard recently updated to 2.20 BIOS version. OS is Windows 7 x64. The problem is after that update full hibernation (by that i mean full system power off) stopped working although everything was fine before. Now when I press hibernate, sleep in initiated as usual, monitor goes to sleep, HDD and CPU fan stop spinning, but chassis fans (i have Gigabyte Aurora 3D 570 case with two rear and one front fans) still remain working. Also power leds are lit as if computer is turned on. Tried changing different UEFI settings related to sleep mode, and none of them change above described behaviour. I have "Deep Sleep" (Advanced-South Bridge Configuration) set to "Enabled in S4-S5", "Suspend to RAM" (Advanced-ACPI Configuration) set to "Auto", all fans settings in "H/W Monitor" set to "Auto".

• Windows 8.1 installation: Which drive is the F drive?

  I am doing a clean install of Windows 8.1 on an old PC. It was purchased as download from Microsoft Store and written to and booted from a USB flash drive. It went through all of these steps: Copying Windows Files Getting files ready for installation Installing features Installing updates Then at "Getting finished" I am stuck at this stupid dialog box. Please unplug the following external drive and click OK to restart your computer and finish installing Windows. F: How do I tell what physical drive this is? Can I drop to command prompt during installation? And is it safe to unplug it while powered on? There is no external hard drive connected, none that I can see. There is no USB or FireWire drive connected externally. I think it sees one of the internal drives as external... in some weird way?!

  how can I change delay before focus when having focus-mode: mouse in gnome 3? I am used to this behaviour from my previous WM (awesome), but I decided to give a Gnome another try (last used was gnome2) and I havem more or less happy so far, only this mouse focus thing is bugging me. I am used to no delay when focusing window under mouse, but I cannot find any setting do to this in gnome3. I so far tried googling, some medling with dconf editor but so far I have no luck in solving this. Any help will be appreciated ^_^

• Stop windows-7 explorer taskbar icon changing for different locations

  If I open an instance of Windows Explorer, a button appears on the taskbar; its icon matches the icon of current location in Explorer. E.g. If I've clicked on a drive (e.g. C:) then the taskbar icon changes to the drive icon. If I select the Pictures Library location, the taskbar icon changes to a little picture symbol. How can I stop this behaviour, so that the taskbar icon always shows the same icon, regardless of where I've clicked in Explorer?

• Internet Explorer changes brightness

  I have a very annoying problem with IE8 on Vista: My screen brightness changes when I view a page with IE. It slowly dimms brightness some 20% - enough to be noticeable. This seems to be dependent on the OVERALL brightness of the page viewed or of the amount of bright space on the page... sometimes it dimms down if the page is bright, sometimes the complete different, it dimms when lot of dark space is on the page. I know this sounds weird, I cannot describe it better. It takes about one,two seconds from on brightness level to the other. This ONLY occurs in IE - not in Word or any other application. Please help! This dimming is very stressfull for my eyes.

• Windows 7, files reappear after deletion.

  I'm trying to delete some files from a folder. I've taken ownership of the files and the folder. When I delete these files Windows doesn't report any errors and deletes them. BUT, after I press F5 these files reappear again. There are no messages whatsoever, they are just undeletable. I know login off will help, but how do I fix it without going through the pain of closing everything down? P.S. Files disappear from the folder after aprox. 5 minutes. Update. Turns out my version of Windows did not properly upgrade from test version, so it had some weird disk drive issues.

• Debian Linux server hangs after a week or so

  I have 2 Debian Linux 6.0.4 servers that have a strange behaviour: after 5-7-10 days they hang. By this I mean the servers need to be restarted and before that ping won't answer. I've been struggling with this problem for a couple of months now and here's some thoughts/what I tried without being able to solve the problem. I changed the RAM on a server. Being 2 different servers I doubt that it could be something related to hardware as a 3rd identical server won't have this problem. I logged the server load and when it crashes the load is fine (quite low) I cannot find anything in the server logs, logs are fine till the server freezes. I don't have access to console unfortunately. While I have years of admin experience I have never encountered such an issue and right now I have no idea where else to investigate. If you have an idea of what I could try in order to fix the problem please share it with me:-)

• Why is my USB-to-VGA'd monitor working, but not showing in Display Settings?

  I have a USB-to-VGA adapter, which I use to connect a second monitor to my laptop (totaling 3 screens). It worked alright with Vista. I upgraded to Windows 7, and now it no longer works properly (I downloaded the latest drivers just to get it to work on 7). The extra monitor is detected and used to extend the desktop (I can move things onto it, etc), but is not shown within the Control Panel. This is annoying because now I can't changes its resolution, set its logical position to match its physical position, etc. Can I do anything, besides waiting for better drivers? I'm mainly concerned with moving its logical position. (I'd also like to understand how Windows can use a monitor it can't detect. Weird.)

• Grub2 menu after VMware guest customization

  Hi, I have ubuntu 9.10 desktop VMware VM with the default grub2 installed. There is some weird problem with this VM. When you clone this vm and have a customization script run, the cloned machine crashes at first boot (VMware does not officially suport customizaing Ubuntu newer than 8.04). After the creash the Grub boot menu is displayed but there is not time out. I checked /boot/grub/grub.cfg and it does indeed show a timeout of 10 seconds. Nothing happens till I select an option with the keyboard. The second time the Ubuntu loads, it does not crash. My question is, how do I make the grub menu timeout in that case? Thanks.

  This question relates to my ACER laptop running Windows VISTA. Currently when I close the lid of my laptop the laptop does not power down, however when I open the lid it does. When looking at the power settings it is set to power down when closing the lid. The trigger to this seems to be the lid being opened not being closed. • What can cause peaks in pagetables in /proc/meminfo ?

  I have a gameserver running Debian Lenny on a VPS host. Even when experiencing a fairly low load, the players start experiencing major lag (ping times rise from 50 ms to 150-500 ms) in bursts of 3 - 10 seconds. I have installed Munin server monitoring, but when looking at the graphs it looks like the server has plenty of CPU, RAM and bandwidth available. The only weird thing I noticed is some peaks in the memory graph attributed to "page_tables" which maps to PageTables in /proc/meminfo but I can't find any good information on what this might mean. Any ideas what might be causing this? If you need any more graps, just let me know. The interrupts/second count is at roughly 400-600 during this period (nearly all from eth0). The drop in committed was caused by me trying to lower the allocated memory for the server from 512MB to 256MB, but that didn't seem to help.

• SQL Server tempdb size seems large, is this normal?

  From what I understand the system database is used to hold temporary tables, intermediate results and other temporary information. On one of my database instances I have a tempdb that is seems very large (30GB). This database has not been modified (as in "last modified date" on the mdf file) in over a week. Is it normal to have the temp db remain that large for that long of a period? It seems to me that it should be updating fairly often and returning space that it is using fairly quickly... Am I way off here or is SQL Server doing something weird? FYI: This is a SharePoint 2010 database, not sure if that makes a difference.

• Canadian English on Apple products

  Apple is an American company. As many of you probably know, Canadian English is different from American English, and closer to British English (e.g. colour instead of color). I use iWork and Microsoft Office for Mac (along with many other applications on OS X), and OS X, nor my iPhone, have an option to switch to Canadian English. Yes, you can select Canadian English as an input language in the language bar, but any program that uses the central OS X spell checking (from Mail to Office to iWork to Chrome) will check words against an American English dictionary. I know asking a question that involves an iPhone component is borderline off-topic, but I know on my iPhone I can select British English, but that turns my $ into £ and has a few other weird spelling quirks. Simple question: Is it possible to make OS X (and maybe the iPhone) use a Canadian English dictionary for its spell checking? Because British English just doesn't cut it anymore. Thanks!

• Why do I have to manually 'Restart Management Network' on vSphere 5 host after reboot to get networking available?

  I've got a couple of vSphere 5.0 hosts in a small lab environment here and I've noticed a strange behaviour. When on of the hosts gets rebooted, it is unresponsive to the network until I log into the ESX console, Press F2 to customize and select Restart management network. Once this is done, the networking works perfectly as expected. Each host has two NICs which are trunked together using Etherchannel to a Cisco 3750. The link is also a .1q VLAN trunk and the management network is configured on VLAN121 with the VM traffic configured on VLAN118. Why would the host be completely dead to the world until I physically kick it?   Hi there I just did a huge mistake. Yesterday, a freind of mine has asked me to intal windows xp for him. I did this task hundres of times, but yesterday i was tyred when i started the install procedure and i've formated the D partition and installed windows on it. Now I'm running PhotoRed on that partition, but it recovers the files in a weird way(filenames and diretory structure is lost). My questions are: 1) how can i recouver as much is possible from the previous data of that partition? 2) how to tell to my freind what i've did?

• Why do all my browsers default to the "Impact" font?

  I've been struggling with a font issue which I hope you can help resolve. A few weeks ago I started seeing "Impact" as the default font on lots of webpages, rendering much of the content illegible. I think this issue began after I installed other fonts, but I'm not sure. The issue occurs on Chrome, IE and Firefox which suggests it is a Windows issue. By the time I tried to revert the changes via System Restore, it was too late. I tried to reset the default font but Windows does not seem to respond to that. When I click "Restore to default font settings" the button greys out but nothing else happens. No dialog box and no change in the issue. I've tried deleting the fonts in my font folder and re-installing them (from backup) but that did not work either. • A synergy alternative that just works?

  I have been using Synergy for a few days now on my Windows 7 desktop (as server) and Macbook (client). Unfortunately, it seems to be buggy - often, the keyboard would stop working on the Mac to the point of forcing me to use the Macbook's keyboard. There are other weird problems as well. Is there a better/proprietary alternative to Synergy? It should support both Windows and Mac. I'd be more than willing to pay for it if it would just work. Edit: How is VNC/TeamViewer supposed to help? I'm not looking to merely access a remote desktop, I only want to share the keyboard/mouse with multiple computers (mac, windows) retaining their own display.

  I have a server that responds in a weird way to ping: $ ping hostname.com PING hostname.com (<IP address>) 56(84) bytes of data. From hostname.com (<IP address>) icmp_seq=1 Destination Host Unreachable From hostname.com (<IP address>) icmp_seq=2 Destination Host Unreachable From hostname.com (<IP address>) icmp_seq=3 Destination Host Unreachable From hostname.com (<IP address>) icmp_seq=4 Destination Host Unreachable I'm confused, as the messages come from the server that I want to ping, and at the same time it's saying Destination Host (itself) Unreachable. Pinging by IP address yields the same result. The server is online and operating normally. What could be the cause?

• How to repair unbootable Fedora install

  How do you repair/reinstall Fedora without deleting any existing partitions or data? I was attempting to upgrade some old Fedora 13 servers to 17, following the instructions in the wiki. After the 14-15 upgrade, rebooting resulted in the output: Dropping to debug shell. sh: can't access tty; job control turned off dracut:/# Running dmesg also shows: dracut Warning: No root device "block:/dev/mapper/VolGroup-lv_root" found Googling shows this error is typically related to some weird RAID issues, but my server is a virtual machine not using any RAID. Using a rescue CD, I can chroot /mnt/sysimage, and all packages and data still seems to be there. How do I make the system bootable again?

• Minimizing windows to tray in xfce

  For XFCE (v. 4.8), I'm searching for possible options to minimize windows to tray (iconify). This means that 1) they're not in the window listing and 2) they're not in the alt+TAB menu and 3) when closed, the window hides (it disappears from window listing but still stays running). "alltray" has some weird GTK-related bug (https://bugs.launchpad.net/alltray/+bug/589831; windows hide but unhiding doesn't do anything; they stay in the tray icon until the user undocks them). "trayer" complains that "another systray is already running" and there's no obvious workaround. This question here is to ask about possible minimalistic (as everything in XFCE is) solutions which don't involve manual compiling, and aren't an overkill like cairo-dock is (a rather bloated gnome-style application which creates a new large 'tray' instead of using the existing one). • Windows 7 - problems launching default application

  Just built up a new W7 PC. I've noticed some strange issues with launching default applications. I've got Visual Studio & SQL Server Management Studio set run as administrator when launched. If i double click a .sql file SSMS opens ok but the file itself does not get loaded. If I do the same with a .sln then I get nothing at all from Visual Studio. For the latter I presume the UAC prompt is hidden somewhere waiting for me to say it's ok to launch the app but i've no idea what's happening with SSMS. Is this a W7 bug or are there some settings somewhere that I can tweak to improve this behaviour?

• Robocopy hiding folders on backup drives

  I have a backup batch file that uses Robocopy to backup my files: robocopy "C:\" "G:\Default\RoboCopyBackup\C" /XF Pagefile.sys /XD "System Volume Information" "Recycler" "Temporary Internet Files" "Installer Cache" "Temp" /E /R:1 /W:0 /TEE /XJ This should create a folder structure on the external backup drive like so: G:\Default\RoboCopyBackup\C\... However, G: appears totally empty. What is weird, is that the folders and files are there! If I type the above path into the address bar, I see all the files and folders! Can anyone help me work out why? I think it might be some NTFS-based ownership/permissions thing but I'm not sure.
