• Optimal Networking Setup for a 2-Story unit?

  I am moving into a 4 bedroom two-story unit. It’s roughly 2,200 sq ft. I want absolute max throughput possible to be achieved in all focal points. We’re all in internet related industries. Between gaming and web-development latency and throughput are major factors for us. Here’s our main focal points: 1) Garage (office). downstairs 2) Each bedroom x4. upstairs 3) Living room. downstairs The fastest line we can get is Comcast 50mbdown/5up (Wideband). I am looking for the best way to achieve wireless and wired performance for our setup. Our gaming computers may be in our bedroom, and we also may bring it down to the office every now and then for “LAN” sessions. Most wireless will be happening downstairs with our laptops, but since we may do LAN sessions then hard wired latency may be important there too. My concerns: If we do only wireless there would be too much latency for gaming. I don’t know if placing one D-link DGL 4500 on the top floor would be enough; which I currently own. Would this wireless router be enough on top floor and that’s it? My second strategy was a combination of wiring and wireless but I’m not sure what’s easiest way to do this? This is a place we’re renting, so I’m not sure how much leeway we have with wiring, but we’re all pretty competent... if we can’t drill through a wall we can probably “stitch” them across the edges wherever needed. Thoughts on the optimal way to do this?

• How can I connect my Xbox to my Mac on my network

  I have a wireless router/modem (Router 1) in my living room. This is connected to the internet (cable). Wireless is disabled as the router has a terrible wireless range. My Xbox is connected via ethernet to Router 1. Another LAN output from Router 1 connects to a powerline adapter. Router 1 acts as a DHCP server on 192.168.0.x and has the IP 192.168.0.1 In a second room I have Router 2. This has the powerline feed from Router 1 going into the WAN socket. This router runs the Tomato Firmware and acts as a wireless router for the rest of the house using the IP range 192.168.1.x. Router 2 IP is 192.168.1.1. My Mac is connected to Router 2 using a LAN cable and has the IP 192.168.0.133. Several mobile devices need wireless access. I want an ethernet connection to my Mac, not wireless. I should be able to use software like Connect360 to share media from my Mac to the XBox but the XBox does not see my Mac. I can ping 192.168.0.1 from the Mac. Is this possible using my current setup? If so, how?

• Query total page count via SNMP HP Laserjet

  I was asked to get hold of the total pages counts for the 100+ printers we have at work. All of them are HP Laser or Business Jets of some description and the vast majority are connected via some form of HP JetDirect network card/switch. After many hours of typing in IP addresses and copying and pasting the relevant figure in to Excel I have now been asked to do this on a weekly basis. This led me to think there must be an easier way, as an IT professional I can surely work out some time saving method to solve this issue. Suffice it to say I do not feel very professional now after a day or so of trying to make SNMP work for me! From what I understand the first thing is to enable SNMP on the printer. Done. Next I would need something to query the SNMP bit. I decided to go open source and free and someone here recommended net-snmp as a decent tool (I would like to have just added the printers as nodes in SolarWinds but we are somewhat tight on licences apparently). Next I need the name of the MIB. For this I believe the HP-LASERJET-COMMON-MIB has the correct information in it. Downloaded this and added to net-snmp. Now I need the OID which I believe after much scouring is printed-media-simplex-count (we have no duplex printers, that we are interested in at least). I have a feeling I am using either the wrong MIB or the wrong OID from said MIB (or both). Does anyone have any pointers on this for me? Or should I give up and go back to navigationg each printers web page individually (hoping not).

• Adding an user to samba

  I'm trying to setup some samba shares in my home network on an Ubuntu 12.04 machine. Everything works fine for my user account (max) but I can not add any new user. Every time I try to add new user they can not use the shares. It's likely that the error is very basic to the concept of samba but please don't just tell me to read the docs. I've been trying that for about 2 weeks now. I've set up the server with my user max who can mount transfer and the share max. Than I added the user simon with sudo adduser --no-create-home --disabled-login --shell /bin/false simon because the user should not be able to ssh into the machine. I did an sudo smbpasswd -a simon and set an (samba) password for simon and added an share for simon. I also added simon to transferusers to give him access to the share transfer. • Windows 7, Printer is unavailable until PC reboot

  We are having a problem that I haven't seen before and can find no answers to online. A desktop running Windows 7 is unable to print using network printers. When the user tries, no matter what printer it is, he get's the following message when using Microsoft Office applications: "Current printer is unavailable. Select another printer." When the end user uses Outlook we get the message: "Printing is not available. There are no printers installed. You can select and configure a printer in Windows Control Panel." Now here is the confusing part, if we reboot the pc it works fine for a little while and then goes back to the same old same old. The printers are working fine for every other user as well so I believe it is the user's machine. If anyone has any ideas please let me know. Edit: I'd like to add in that some people were having luck disabling snmp for the printers. Restarting the print spooler doesn't seem to do anything.

• Shortcut to "printer and faxes" on another computer

  I have a print server running windows server 2008 that has about 50 printers on it. In windows XP, I was able to connect to the server using the UNC name and make a shortcut to the "printers and faxes" folder. (For the record, I know that it really isn't a folder, but that's outside the scope of this question.) I have recently switched to windows 7 and I find that the jump lists are really useful. One of the things I want to do is make it easy to connect to that server's "printers and faxes" folder. I would like to use something like a shortcut that I can open and go immediately to that location. The problem is that windows 7 doesn't have a way to create a shortcut like you could in WinXP. They have a button on the toolbar that says "view remote printers" which sends you to the correct folder. I'd like to avoid having to type out the server name. I also can't use the "view network" link in windows explorer. Our organization has over 6,000 machines and viewing the network lists all of them. This is all about saving time by using the minimum number of mouse clicks and key presses in normal operation. Does anyone have any suggestions?

• Windows Server 2012 Can't Print

  I know this may sound incredibly stupid and there is probably an easy solution but I can't seem to find it. Friends of mine recently upgraded their server for their small business from the POS old one. New hardware and a change from Windows Server 2003 to Windows Server 2012. I've got everything they need transfered over and running except for printing. They need to be able to print to printers in the vans their technicians use from the server via remote desktop. In other words the use a laptop to remote desktop into the server and need to print invoices out from the remote server to printers attached locally via usb. On the old server they just installed the identical driver and that was it, they could print as needed. On this server no matter what we seem to do we can't get it to print remotely, and in the process we also discovered that the server can't even print to the network printer. It sees the printer on it's network and it sees (through redirect) the printers in the vans but when you hit print it claims it did and nothing happens. There isn't an issue with the printers themselves as every other device we have can print to them without issues. Is there some setting that is inhibiting the server from printing? Is there something I need to install (print server?) to add the functionality? Thanks in advance for helping me out here

• Firefox won't start

  OK, I've got this problem again, only this time the problem only seems to affect Firefox and Thunderbird. Rebooted several times. Tried resetting to the last restore point, but that didn't work. Tried setting a new Firefox profile, and that didn't work either. The symptom is that you click on the Firefox or Thunderbird icon, the process appears in the Process Explorer list, but the window never opens. Curiously, if Firefox has been "started" this way, Internet Explorer hangs starting until I kill the Firefox process. Any ideas? I suppose the next thing to try is uninstalling and reinstalling Firefox/Thunderbird, but this whole thing is getting old. The box is a Sony Vaio running Windows Vista. It was completely restored from scratch less than two weeks ago, after the last fiasco. (I'm suspecting that my aborted install of Acronis True Image may have mucked things up this time.) Sigh! Another symptom: It occurred to me to try printing something, but if I open "Printers" it just sits there "searching". So something is rotten in the bowels of Windows. Minor update: It occurred to me to kill Internet Explorer (where I'd attempted printing). Then Printers comes up fairly quickly -- with no printers defined. Clicking "Add a printer" does nothing. Update: Well, following this suggestion to stop and restart the print spooler brought the printers back. And, wonder of wonders, Firefox now starts OK. Stopping and restarting the print spooler!!

The issue is that this gallery has the potential to have 100s to 1000s of images that needs to be presented, so I would like to avoid loading them all into a single UIScrollView at once and destroying performance. I need to create a view that recycles the view objects (like UITableView) to increase performance and reduce memory overhead, but it needs to scroll in a horizontal fashion. Any ideas? Is it possible to make UITableView operation horizontally? Thanks!

• Sharing a UIView between UIViewControllers in a UITabBarController

  Hi all - I have a UIScrollView that houses a gallery of images the user can scroll through. This view needs to be visible on each of three separate UIViewControllers that are housed within a UITabBarController. Right now, I have three separate UIScrollView instances in the UITabBarController subclass, and the controller manages keeping the three synchronized (when a user scrolls the one they can see, programmatically scrolling the other two to match, etc.), which is not ideal. I would like to know if there is a way to work with only ONE instance of the UIScrollView, but have it show up only in the UIViewController that the user is currently interacting with. This would completely eliminate all the synchronization code. Is there something that can be done, using a many-to-one relationship on IBOutlet or something like that, to narrow this down to one instance so I'm not having to manage three scroll views? I tried keeping a single instance and moving the pointer from one view to the next using the UITabBarControllerDelegate methods (calling setGallery:nil on the current and setGallery:scrollerOne on the next each time it changed), but the scroller never moved to the other tabs. • HTG Explains: Why is Printer Ink So Expensive?

  Printer ink is expensive, more expensive per drop than fine champagne or even human blood. If you haven’t gone paperless, you’ll notice that you’re paying a lot for new ink cartridges — more than seems reasonable. Purchasing the cheapest inkjet printer and buying official ink cartridge replacements is the most expensive thing you can do. There are ways to save money on ink if you must continue to print documents. Cheap Printers, Expensive Ink Ink jet printers are often very cheap. That’s because they’re sold at cost, or even at a loss — the manufacturer either makes no profit from the printer itself or loses money. The manufacturer will make most of its money from the printer cartridges you buy later. Even if the company does make a bit of money from each printer sold, it makes a much larger profit margin on ink. Rather than selling you a printer that may be rather expensive, they want to sell you a cheap printer and make money on an ongoing basis by providing expensive printer ink. It’s been compared to the razor model — sell a razor cheaply and mark up the razor blades. Rather than making a one-time profit on the razor, you’ll make continuing profit as the customer keeps buying razor blade replacements — or ink, in this case. Many printer manufacturers go out of their way to make it difficult for you to use unofficial ink cartridges, building microchips into their official ink cartridges. If you use an unofficial cartridge or refill an official cartridge, the printer may refuse to use it. Lexmark once argued in court that unofficial microchips that enable third-party ink cartridges would violate their copyright and Lexmark has argued that creating an unofficial microchip to bypass this restriction on third-party ink would violate Lexmark’s copyright and be illegal under the US DMCA. Luckily, they lost this argument. What Printer Companies Say Printer companies have put forth their own arguments in the past, attempting to justify the high cost of official ink cartridges and microchips that block any competition. In a Computer World story from 2010, HP argued that they spend a billion dollars each year on “ink research and development.” They point out that printer ink “must be formulated to withstand heating to 300 degrees, vaporization, and being squirted at 30 miles per hour, at a rate of 36,000 drops per second, through a nozzle one third the size of a human hair. After all that it must dry almost instantly on the paper.” They also argue that printers have become more efficient and use less ink to print, while third-party cartridges are less reliable. Companies that use microchips in their ink cartridges argue that only the microchip has the ability to enforce an expiration date, preventing consumers from using old ink cartridges. There’s something to all these arguments, sure — but they don’t seem to justify the sky-high cost of printer ink or the restriction on using third-party or refilled cartridges. Saving Money on Printing Ultimately, the price of something is what people are willing to pay and printer companies have found that most consumers are willing to pay this much for ink cartridge replacements. Try not to fall for it: Don’t buy the cheapest inkjet printer. Consider your needs when buying a printer and do some research. You’ll save more money in the long run. Consider these basic tips to save money on printing: Buy Refilled Cartridges: Refilled cartridges from third parties are generally much cheaper. Printer companies warn us away from these, but they often work very well. Refill Your Own Cartridges: You can get do-it-yourself kits for refilling your own printer ink cartridges, but this can be messy. Your printer may refuse to accept a refilled cartridge if the cartridge contains a microchip. Switch to a Laser Printer: Laser printers use toner, not ink cartridges. If you print a lot of black and white documents, a laser printer can be cheaper. Buy XL Cartridges: If you are buying official printer ink cartridges, spend more money each time. The cheapest ink cartridges won’t contain much ink at all, while larger “XL” ink cartridges will contain much more ink for only a bit more money. It’s often cheaper to buy in bulk. Avoid Printers With Tri-Color Ink Cartridges: If you’re printing color documents, you’ll want to get a printer that uses separate ink cartridges for all its colors. For example, let’s say your printer has a “Color” cartridge that contains blue, green, and red ink. If you print a lot of blue documents and use up all your blue ink, the Color cartridge will refuse to function — now all you can do is throw away your cartridge and buy a new one, even if the green and red ink chambers are full. If you had a printer with separate color cartridges, you’d just have to replace the blue cartridge. If you’ll be buying official ink cartridges, be sure to compare the cost of cartridges when buying a printer. The cheapest printer may be more expensive in the long run.   Dell printer goes offline(server connection) after second print job. Although the printer's display says it is ready. If you turn off then on the printer you can send one job and goes back offline(server connection) on the next print job. We have multiple Dell 2330dn printers installed through a print server, only one of the printers is experiencing this problem. Two different users. Two different machines. Two different operating systems (win7 and Vista). The computers have been reset. Dell printers have web interface if this helps (through IP address). Thanks for any help!

• Best suited multi-function printer for Linux usage from a few choices

  I want a cheap multi-function printer for Linux usage. I'm looking for rock solid scanning and printing that works with big images. I'd prefer drivers that are available in Debian, or other drivers that are open source, but will settle for proprietary drivers if they are well contained and clean. Some choices I have are: Samsung SCX-4300 HP LaserJet M1120 MFP Samsung SCX-4500 Canon i-SENSYS MF4010 Brother DCP-7040 I am also interested in opinions what printer communication language is best for Linux usage for cheap printers. PostScript is nice, of course, but low-end PostScript printers often have problems when printing complex (large) PostScript files. It seems Samsung printers use SPL for communication, HP uses XQX and ZJS, then there's ofcourse PCL.

The server is connected by LAN. On one computer running windows XP I can see the server but are not allowed to acces them. On another computer on the WIFI-net running win7 I cannot see the server at all but I can ping the server and I can see the smb-protocoll is running when sniffing with wireshark. I don't primarily want to use passwords, computers on the lan and wifi should be able to connect without any login-procedure. I'm sure my config is not sufficient but have hard to understand how I should do. Theres a lot of descriptions on the net but most is old and none have been of any help. I'm also confused by the fact that I can not se the sever on my win7-machine even though it communicates with the samba-server. Would be very happy if anyone could spread some light over this mess.

However, I can't seem to share printers between them: when I right-click on the printer I expect to see "share printer" but there is no option for that. When I read about "share printers" in the Windows 7 help, it talks about this computer "not being able to connect to a home network", yet they seem to be connected fine (I can share files between them). Why can't I share printers between the computers if I can share files?

  I am setting up a print server for our company that has a parent domain and 2 child domains. The print server is on the parent domain and I have no problems getting the print server to deploy printers through group policy to users on its own domain. The problem I am having is that it isn't deploying the printers to users that are in it's child domains. Some other info that may help: I am not sharing or listing printers in the directory I have added pushprinterconnections.exe to the group policy login script Does anything come to mind?

• How to lie to Win98 about USB drivers?

  I have a new printer and a old (Windows 98) system (that can't be upgraded). I've been told that some of the drivers for older printers of the same make are very likely to work just fine for it if I can talk windows into using them. Is there a way to edit the map of device IDs (VID/PID?) to USB drivers? The specific kind of tool I'm looking for should work for any kind of USB drivers, not just printers.   I have two printers hooked up to my intel imac. I am having a printing error. It seems that whenever i try to print (a simple text doc) I am unable to get the print job to go to print queue with one of my printers. I have a HP c7280 and a HP c3100. I am able to get one working properly, but the other doesn't seem to allow it to go to the print queue. I have switched usb cables (with the printer that I know works) and both printers are recognized by the computer in the printer preferences pane. I've tried reseting the printer system in the printer setup utility.. reloaded the drivers from HP.. etc. If anyone has a suggestion or could point me to a little help i'd be VERY grateful Best Regards.. • Only one user can connect to Ubuntu samba server

  I setup a samba server on 12.04 LTS, and it works great for one user but not the others. I am trying to map a network drive from a windows 7 laptop. I can successfully authenticate with one user, but the other two both get "Access is denied" errors. Here is my smb.conf file. I changed all the users so they are all members of the same groups (all three users are admins anyway). I only ever have one user connected at a time. • small Windows network w/ printer issue

  printer 1 connected to the desktop printer 2 connected to the same desktop that desktop is connected via Cat 5 to a wireless router a notebook is connected to that same router via WiFi The desktop Control Panel has just been reconfigured to share printers. (I assume this means that the desktop will now allow a notebook coming through the router to be able to access the two printers that are presently hooked up via the desktop--am I correct? Is that what it means?) The desktop can still print to either printer. It is presently okay. This notebook/printer relationship is a new configuration. The notebook, however, can't print at all (yet it can access the internet just fine). Any suggestions for it to be able to access the printers and be able to print via the desktop via the router? Thank you for any assistance.

• Windows can see Ubuntu Server printer, but can't print to it

  I have an old desktop that I'm trying to set up as a home backup/print server. Backup was trivial, but am having issues getting the printing to work. The printer is connected to the server running Ubuntu Server 9.10 (no gui). If I access the printer via http://hostname:631/printers/, I am able to print a test page, so I know the printer is working; however, I am having no luck from Windows. Windows can see the printer when browsed via \hostname\, but I am unable to connect. Windows says "Windows cannot connect to the printer" without indicating why. Any suggestions?
