  • Alert team members of SVN commit?

    I'm hosting my own svn repository on ubuntu 8.04. Is there a way for svn to send emails to team members whenever a commit has happened? If coding is required, the only language I'm able to use on a linux server is PHP. So I could write a php script to be triggered by svn. Can anyone tell me how to hook up my php script to an svn commit? Or is there another way to do this?

    I want to start up my Rails development server like this: script/server OFFLINE_MODE=1 and have a method that checks for the presence of that constant: helper_method :offline_mode? def offline_mode? defined?(OFFLINE_MODE) ? true : false end so I can hide stuff in my app when I'm coding without access to the internet. For some reason though, OFFLINE_MODE doesn't ever seem to be defined and the method always returns false.. thoughts?

Given that we only spent a few days doing design and no coding, I was surprised to find out that after lunch, he had over 40 files completed (various classes, interfaces, DTOs, etc).   • Using low level api for datastore in google app engine ? is it bad ?

    There is little documentation on how to use the low level api for datastore and quite a lot on JPA and JDO and how it translates to it. My question is: is there any advantage in coding against the JPA or JDO specs instead of accessing directly the low level api for datastore ?   • Any tips for how to build a LED sytem thet will light up to music?

    So basically I would like somehow that given an audio file as input (most likely mp3 or I can use some audio engine that will handle other types too) from my computer to control some LED lights so they will be something like an oscilloscope, like the one in winamp.     assume that i start coding an application from scratch, is the best way to create tables when using Doctrine, to manually create tables in mysql and then generate models from the tables, or is it the other way around, that is to create the models in php and then generate tables from models? and if i already have a database, will the models created be optimal? cause i have heard some say that its best to create the database from scratch when using ORM, so that the relations are optimized for OOD. share your thoughts!

    I am trying to find a way to display numerical digits as a larger font size than chars on a website (not my idea!). The reason for this is to make the numbers stand out. I have looked for a font that would satisfy this without coding but I could not find any. Also, I don't want to slow down the website by having the font coverted to an image.     Just had a curious thought, but for general coding and programming, do you think it's best to work out all the logic yourself and start from a blank sheet or just take a code that has been written already(by you or someone else) and just change it to your liking? Assuming you have a programming background of like 1year+. (because as a beginner, it's best to learn from nothing) I'm not saying copy+paste someone else's code and say it's yours.

    I have some of the basic coding down for the program but I do need assistance with something. My goal is to have an alarm go off on multiple PC's in a network indicating that a certain task needs done. Anyone who receives this alarm may stop it, complete the task and log that they did that. What would be the best way to accomplish this in a network? But not every computer in the network will be running this program, just a few.

    Hi, Having assertions for unexpected conditions is considered to be good defensive coding practice. I happen to place assertions whenever i think something unexpected may happen, but that now seems to be an overkill to me. Additionally, sometimes mild unexpected conditions that don't necessarily lead to crash may even cause failure on customer end. Is there a hard and fast rule to put assertions? Thanks.
