• What are the lesser known but cool data structures ?

  There a some data structures around that are really cool but are unknown to most programmers. Which are they? Everybody knows linked lists, binary trees, and hashes, but what about Skip lists, Bloom filters for example. I would like to know more data structures that are not so common, but are worth knowing because they rely on great ideas and enrich a programmer's tool box. PS: I am also interested on techniques like Dancing links which make interesting use of the properties of a common data structure. EDIT: Please try to include links to pages describing the data structures in more detail. Also, try to add a couple of words on why a data structures is cool (as Jonas Kölker already pointed out). Also, try to provide one data-structure per answer. This will allow the better data structures to float to the top based on their votes alone.

• Chrome Extension contenteditable get and set caret position

  I am creating an extension where I need to insert a link into the gmail window. I am able to create a simple extension button in the top of the window and execute code that does replaces all the links. Now, I want to do add links in the contenteditable section as I type. It seems like there should be a simple way to replace text with a link in the document object model. If this is not true I need to do three things. Insert text from the current caret position Capture the caret position. Set the caret position by its offset. I have tried using window.getSelection within the gmail context(that is a body element that is set to contenteditable and embedded inside an iframe in the gmail tab) to get the current range and position. The selection is always empty and contains no ranges regardless of whether text is selected or not.

• 8bpp Bitmap format on the Compact Framework

  Hi friends. I am messing around with Conway's Game of Life - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conway's_Game_of_Life I started out coding algorithmns for winforms and now want to port my work onto windows mobile 6.1 (compact framework). I came across an article by Jon Skeet where he compared several different algorithmns for calculating next generations in the game. He used an array of bytes to store a cells state (alive or dead) and then he would copy this array to an 8bpp bitmap. For each new generation, he works out the state of each byte, then copies the array to a bitmap, then draws that bitmap to a picturebox. void CreateInitialImage() { bitmap = new Bitmap(Width, Height, PixelFormat.Format8bppIndexed); ColorPalette palette = bitmap.Palette; palette.Entries[0] = Color.Black; palette.Entries[1] = Color.White; bitmap.Palette = palette; } public Image Render() { Rectangle rect = new Rectangle(0, 0, Width, Height); BitmapData bmpData = bitmap.LockBits(rect, ImageLockMode.ReadWrite, bitmap.PixelFormat); Marshal.Copy(Data, 0, bmpData.Scan0, Data.Length); bitmap.UnlockBits(bmpData); return bitmap; } His code above is beautifully simple and very fast to render. Jon is using Windows Forms but now I want to port my own version of this onto Windows Mobile 6.1 (Compact Framework) but . . . .there is no way to format a bitmap to 8bpp in the cf. Can anyone suggest a way of rendering an array of bytes to a drawable image in the CF. This array is created in code on the fly (it is NOT loaded from an image file on disk). I basically need to store an array of cells represented by bytes, they are either alive or dead and I then need to draw that array as an image. The game is particularly slow on the CF so I need to implement clever optimised algoritmns but also need to render as fast as possible and the above solution would be pretty dam perfect if only it was available on the compact framework.   I hope this question is clear enough -- if not let me know :) What API would I use when I want to write a procedure at runtime and then just run it eventually at low priority while continuing to do the important stuff right now? Example: link checker 1. I write a blog post with links represented by Link objects. I publish the post. 2. Eventually (at very low priority) the system gets around to fetching the URL of each Link object to make sure it's not broken and indicates that in a property of the Link object. 3. When a user visits my blog post, the render code that turns Link objects into HTML knows whether the links have been checked. I'm assuming there's a very general purpose API for doing this kind of "eventually/low priority" stuff.

• How to open email by x-gm-msgid in Gmail with Javascript

  I'm writing an extension which surfaces links to gmail messages. As the UI loads right in Gmail, I should be able to click on one of these links and have Gmail load it (without refreshing). I have "x-gm-msgid" available and theoretically, I should just be able to navigate to "https://mail.google.com/mail/u/0/#inbox/[x-gm-msgid]". I've tried using location.hash = "#inbox/[x-gm-msgid]" I've tried using history.pushState(null, null, "/mail/u/0/#inbox/[x-gm-msgid]") Neither of which works. Gmail just thwarts any attempt to change the URL (unless it is done via user interaction) Any thoughts on how to get around this restriction?

• Internet Explorer not displaying gif file

  My friend is making a website for a class. Some of the pages display gif image files as links. They display correctly in Firefox and Chrome but not in Internet Explorer. Anybody know why? • Safari's never-ending loading message when an iframe does not have a src

  I'm using @rem's jQuery :visited plugin to do something with visited links on a page. The plugin works by creating an invisible iframe, injecting the HTML source, and comparing the colour of links to see which have been visited. It works perfectly. The problem I have is that on Safari, the status bar message always hangs on "Loading (X-1) of X items" - i.e. it thinks there is still some resource still needing to be loaded. I've narrowed it down to this plugin, and the fact that it attaches the IFRAME element to the BODY before the src is set (or injected in this case). I've tried rearranging the code to set the src before the append happens, but that breaks the plugin's functionality. Anyone have any ideas how to fix this issue? It's not a major issue as the site still functions perfectly well, but it's an annoying glitch that could be confusing to users.

• Autoconf, Libtool shared and static library

  I am using autoconf gnu tools to build my product. It generates both the shared as well as static library for any library where *.la is mentioned. The issue is if you use .la to link your binary in Makefile.am. It links with the dynamic library but when you use ldd to the binary, it says "not a dynamic executable" although it links with shared library. I proved it by removing the shared library after the binary is built and then tried to run the binary. It didn't find the shared library and couldn't run. Another question is how to put library in a specified location using Makefile.am direction ?

• What simple methods are there to wrap a c++ based object model with a COM interface

  I have a pre-existing c++ object model which represents the business layer tier of an application. I want to be able to expose the object model to applications written in other languages i.e vbscript, VB, javascript etc. I believe the best way of doing this is to wrap the business objects with a COM layer. What fast and effective methods are there for doing this. Any advice, links to practical "How to" documentation would be very much appreciated. Because I'm starting a bounty on this , here's a few extra guidelines for potential bounty hunters :- 1)I've decided on an ATL approach 2)I'm now specifically looking for links to really good "how to and quickly" documentation on wrapping a pre-existing c++ object model to make it useable by a scripting language like javascript 3) Something with small working examples showing me what code needs to be added to what files, e.g what goes into the cpp , idl and hpp/h etc. It' must include an example I can compile test and change to get a better understanding.

  Hi, I am working on a shopping cart(open cart) software and have this question. I am not familiar with mvc framework. What i want to know how to show content(mysql) inside a div when you click on a link. There will be 8-10 links and clicking on each should fetch its corresponding products. So for example category 1 | category 2 | category 3 show [products from category 1] when clicked on "category 1" and same way for the other two. the problem is the url for each link will have the category id so when clicked it will fetch its own products inside this div. Can someone please guide me with an example available online? looking for some thing that can dynamically fetch contents from mysql inside this div. content change is based on the category id in the url of the links I am clicking on. regards

• TABINDEX not working on HyperLinks

• Possible Performance Considerations using Linq to SQL Repositories

  I have an ASP.NET MVC application that uses Linq to SQL repositories for all interactions with the database. To deal with data security, I do trimming to filter data to only those items to which the user has access. This occurs in several places: Data in list views Links in a menu bar A treeview on the left hand side containing links to content Role-based security A special security attribute, inheriting from AuthorizeAttribute, that implements content-based authorization on every controller method. Each of these places instantiates a repository, which opens a Linq to Sql DataContext and accesses the database. So, by my count, each request for a page access opens at least six separate Linq to SQL DataContexts. Should I be concerned about this from a performance perspective, and if so, what can be done to mitigate it?

  Hello, we are converting from sharepoint 2003 to sharepoint on line. I am having trouble reproducing a specific behavior in the online version. If a choose a list, I get a "select a view" navigation on the left hand side of the page showing the available views. When a new view is created, it automatically appears on this navigation list. In the online sharepoint, instead there is a view dropdown. I know I can manually setup links on the quick launch but I'm looking for an automatic way to do this. Can the online sharepoint be set up so that when views are added they automatically appear as left-hand links? Or can the "views" dropdown be moved to the left side which would be an acceptable work around? Please note I am unfamiliar with SP designer and I do work with .NET but I dont want to go that route just for this issue - thanks.

  We are a network of Mac computers. I would like to send email addresses to colleagues with links to files on network locations. I made the following applescript: tell application "Finder" set uuu to URL of the first item of (get the selection) set the clipboard to uuu end tell which puts the URL of the currently selected file into the clipboard, which can then be pasted into the message (using the Add Link menu item), providing, for example: file://localhost/Volumes/Commerciale/Clienti/ unfortunately these links do not work. If I select Go To Folder from the menu item, I can get to the folder using an afp:// type url. Is there any way to get this via applescript like I do with url above? Thanks

• Rails - Accessing model class methods from within ActiveRecord model

  I have a simple standalone model that doesn't inherit from ActiveRecord or anything else, called SmsSender. As the name suggests, it delivers text messages to an SMS gateway. I also have an ActiveRecord model called SmsMessage which has an instance method called deliver: def deliver SmsSender.deliver_message(self) self.update_attributes :status => "Sent" end The above is returning uninitialized constant SmsSender. I'm sure this is dead simple, but how can I access the SmsSender class from within my model?

• JavaScript OnClick Handler Not Invoking

  I'm calling a javascript function in an inline onclick like so: <a href="#" onclick="removeAttribute('foo', 'bar');">Some Link</a> When I click on the link, though, nothing happens. I have other links (to other functions) tied to onclicks that work fine elsewhere on the same page. All links to this "removeAttribute" function fail. There are no errors in Firebug, and the onclick event handler is being invoked - but stepping into the removeAttribute function ends up, for some reason, somewhere in jQuery.js. At no point does removeAttribute ever get called. If I do: javascript:removeAttribute('foo', 'bar'); in Firefox's address bar. The function is called successfully. Anyone seen this?

• What can I do to avoid losing original resolution when uploading or exporting photos from Picasa?

  hello i have the following sentence a language L1={a^n * b^n : n=0} and L2={b^n * a^n : n=0} are context free languages so they are close a=under the L1L2 so L={a^n * b^2n A^n : n=0} must be context free too because it is generated by a close property I have to prove if this sentence is true or not so i check the L language and i do not think that it is context free then i also saw that L2 is L1 reversed do i have to check if L1, L2 are deterministic ? please help because i am in a dead end
