• Networking Problem MrxSmb event 50 "Delayed Write Failed" errors occurring all of the sudden

  JUST THIS MONTH, we have started getting reports from a number of very stable clients that MrxSmb event id 50 errors keep appearing in their system event logs. Otherwise, they do not appear to have any networking problems except that there is a critical legacy application which seems to either be generating the MrxSmb errors or having errors occur because of them. The legacy application is comprised of 16 bit and 32 bit code and has not been changed or recompiled in many years. It has always been stable on Windows XP systems. The customers that have the problem usually have a small (5 clients or less) peer to peer network with all Windows XP systems. All service packs are loaded on the XP machines. Note: The only thing that seems to correct the problem is disabling opportunistic locking. I don't like this solution because it seems to slow down the network and sometimes causes record locking issues between users (on some networks). Also, this seems to have just started happening - as if a Windows update for XP has caused it? However, I have removed recent updates and it did not correct the issue. • windows 7: Event 55 The file system structure on the disk is corrupt and unusable

  Here is a real bad one! Windows 7 RTM with SP1 installed [Version 6.1.7601]. Recently tried to delete some folder on my hard drive and Windows prompted "Error 0x80070570: The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable", and at the same time placed an Event 55 describing "The file system structure on the disk is corrupt and unusable. Please run the chkdsk utility on \Device\HarddiskVolume2." Ran chkdsk, first with /f option, then with /r option. Result in both cases was: no errors found, 0 bad sectors. No problems chkdsk found at all! Went through StackExchange, Google and spent over 6 hours on this. Still cannot figure out the problem. Re-installing/Re-Formatting is not an option! What did I try: Hotfix - Windows6.1-KB982927-x64.msu - gave me an error about incompatibility with my computer, however it totally matches my system. CRC of hotfix was ok. Windows Repair Console found startup errors and fixed those, but this didn't help an issue, even by running chkdsk c: /R from it. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/246026 does not promise anything good. sfc /scannow does not help too. Replaced hard drive by cloning an old one using True Image, repeated all steps above. At the same time, some minor glitches started to appear in my Windows, like side panel and notification area settings are getting reset. Goal is to delete the folder and get rid of Event 55. Sounds like NTFS bug. Please help. This is completely ridiculous.

  I have a user, who despite my best efforts, is having constant Office 2007 crashes. I've tried deleting their profile and setting it up again, repairing office, uninstalling completely and then reinstalling, and swapping out memory sticks. Any ideas? This is driving me nuts.

• Deploying Windows Service through group policy fails with Event ID 102

  I'm trying to deploy a custom Windows Service (written in C#; installed through a VS setup project) using a group policy. To help debug this, I also have two additional MSIs in the same policy. All three packages are deployed as a machine policy, not a user one. On one machine (runs Windows Server 2008; no UAC), all three deploy fine. The service is set to Automatic, as expected. On two machines (run Windows 7; UAC), the two other MSIs deploy fine, but my service fails to install. The event log gives an event ID of 102, which appears to be a permissions problem: The install of application "Package Name" from policy "Policy Name" failed. The error was The installation source for this product is not available. Verify that the source exists and that you can access it. However, all three packages come from the same share linked through UNC, so this is unlikely. My guess is that UAC is the problem; that the service requires additional permissions. Do I need to alter the MSI somehow?

• zsh auto-complete event designator

  (See my previous question for additional context). I'm migrating to zsh from bash, and using oh-my-zsh. When my zsh history looks something like the following: git status git add -A git commit I want to be able to re-run git add -A. To do that, I could use !?git add, which should: !?str[?] Refer to the most recent command containing str. The trailing ‘?’ is necessary if this reference is to be followed by a modifier or followed by any text that is not to be considered part of str. The link for zsh event designators is here. Unfortunately, I can't do this - as I'm typing !?git add, as I hit the ' ', it auto-completes the command to the most recent command matching git (ie, it auto-completes with git commit). I can't use the event designator properly because of this auto-completion as I hit the space. I assume this is an oh-my-zsh feature. I have no idea where to look, though - greping for 'complet' in the oh-my-zsh source doesn't get me anywhere. My question: how do I turn off this feature? Or, if that's not something that's known, where should I be looking - if I was going to implement this auto-complete when whitespace is entered, where would be a logical place to do so in the oh-my-zsh framework?

• UACCEEventLog 301 Filling Event Logs

  After pushing out clients for the MS Application Compatibility Toolkit on our domain via GPO, UACCEEventLog 301 occurs a few times per second in the event log. Several Thousand per hour. One test i need to do is logon with Administrator to see if these events go away while Admin, but of course that is not a fix. This is only part of the event log entry, but is the most readable and clearly indicates yet another problem with Antivirus software. But still no fix. Originally, i posted this In Words and Bytes, but then edited it to make it much easier to read. LocalMachine\Users do have Read Access to this key. • Diagnosing Logon Audit Failure event log entries

  I help a client manage a website that is run on a dedicated web server at a hosting company. Recently, we noticed that over the last two weeks there have been tens of thousands of Audit Failure entries in the Security Event Log with Task Category of Logon - these have been coming in about every two seconds, but interesting stopped altogether as of two days ago. In general, the event description looks like the following: An account failed to log on. Subject: Security ID: SYSTEM Account Name: ...The Hosting Account... Account Domain: ...The Domain... Logon ID: 0x3e7 Logon Type: 10 Account For Which Logon Failed: Security ID: NULL SID Account Name: david Account Domain: ...The Domain... Failure Information: Failure Reason: Unknown user name or bad password. Status: 0xc000006d Sub Status: 0xc0000064 Process Information: Caller Process ID: 0x154c Caller Process Name: C:\Windows\System32\winlogon.exe Network Information: Workstation Name: ...The Domain... Source Network Address: 173.231.24.18 Source Port: 1605 The value in the Account Name field differs. Above you see "david" but there are ones with "john", "console", "sys", and even ones like "support83423" and whatnot. The Logon Type field indicates that the logon attempt was a remote interactive attempt via Terminal Services or Remote Desktop. My presumption is that these are some brute force attacks attempting to guess username/password combinations in order to log into our dedicated server. Are these presumptions correct? Are these types of attacks pretty common? Is there a way to help stop these types of attacks? We need to be able to access the desktop via Remote Desktop so simply turning off that service is not feasible. Thanks

• returning correct multiTouch id

  I've spent countless hours on reading tutorials and looking at every question related to multiTouch from here and Stackoverflow. But I just cannot figure out how to do this correctly. I use a loop to get my pointerId, I dont see alot of people doing this but its the only way I've managed to get it somewhat working. I have two joysticks on my screen, one for moving and one for controlling my sprites rotation and the angle he shoots, like in Monster Shooter. Both these work fine. My problem is that when I Move my sprite at the same time as Im shooting, my touchingPoint for my movement is set to the touchingPoint of my shooting, since the x and y is higher on the touchingPoint of my shooting (moving-stick on left side of screen, shooting-stick on right side), my sprite speeds up, this creates an unwanted change in speed for my sprite. I will post my entire onTouch method here with some variable-changes to make it more understandable. I simply can not get a good understanding of how multiTouching works. basicly movingPoint changes for both my first and second finger. I bind it to a box, but aslong as I hold one finger within this box, it changes its value based on where my second finger touches. It moves in the right direction and nothing gives an error, the problem is the speed-change, its almost like it adds up the two touchingPoints.

  I've heard many times that all programming is really a subset of math. Some suggest that OO, at its roots, is mathematically based. I don't get the connection. Aside from some obvious examples: using induction to prove a recursive algorithm formal correctness proofs functional languages lambda calculus asymptotic complexity DFAs, NFAs, Turing Machines, and theoretical computation in general the fact that everything on the box is binary In what ways is programming really a subset of math? I'm looking for an explanation that might have relevance to enterprise/OO development (if there is a strong enough connection, that is). Thanks in advance. Edit: as I stated in a comment to an answer, math is uber important to programming, but what I struggle with is the "subset" argument.

  Im learning dynamic programming now, and while I know the theory well, designing DP algorithms for new problems is still difficult. This is what i would really like now- A book or a website, which poses a problem which can be solved by dynamic programming. Also there is the solution with an explanation available, which i would like to see if i cant solve the problem even after butting my head at it for a few hours. Is there some resource that provides this sort of a thing for several categories of algorithms- like graph algorithms, dynamic programming, etc? P.S. I considered Topcoder, but the solutions there are not really appropriate for learning to implement efficient solutions.

  What is the best resource for serious Commodore 64 programming? Assume that serious programming on the Commodore 64 is not done in BASIC V2 that ships with the Commodore 64. I feel like most of the knowledge is tied up in old books and not available on the internet. All that I have found online are either very beginner style introductions to Commodore 64 programming (Hello world), or arcane demo-coder hacks to take advantage of strange parts of the hardware. I haven't found a well-explained list of opcodes, memory locations for system calls, and general mid-level examples and tips. For example, many people do the Project Euler problems just for fun, and in the end nothing was really "accomplished" materially. What is it that makes us enjoy programming? How is programming different from another job? You don't see an accountant going home to do some accounting on their own time just for the pure joy of it. How are we different? (also, if anyone has some ideas on how to tag this, then please do correct it for me.. )

• Becoming a professional programmer / software engineer

  This isn't strictly about programming, more about being a programmer, so I'm sorry if its not the right kind of question to ask on this forum (mod, please delete if it isn't) I'm a computer tech in the US Army, and once I'm out I'll have eight years on the job. I'm about to start a degree through an online school (the only way I can get the army to pay for it while I'm still in), and I'm seriously looking at getting a computer science degree. I'm great with computers. I can take one apart and put it back together with my eyes closed. I'm A+ and Network+ certified and I'm getting a couple other CompTIA certs before I get out. I can work Windows as well as anyone on this planet and I'm not terrible with Linux. A job in computers is something I've always wanted. But, aside from being a computer technician, it seems that every job in the field requires programming ability. I like programming as a hobby. I programmed TI BASIC in high school and I'm teaching myself Python, but that's as far as my experience goes. That sort of brings me to my questions: I've always heard that the first language is the most difficult, and once you learn it well then all the others sort of fall into place for you. Is that true? Like, if I spend the next eight months mastering Python, will I pretty much be able to pick up at least fair proficiency in any other OO language within a month of studying it or whatever? How easy is it to burn out? the biggest thing I'm afraid of is just burning out on programming. I can go all day long if I'm programming strictly for my own personal desire, but I can imagine it being really easy to burn out after a few years of programming to deadlines and certain specifications. Especially if its a big project involving a dozen different designers. From what I told you about myself, would I already be qualified to work as a regular technician (geek squad type or maybe running a computer repair shop). Is Python a good base to learn from? I've heard that it makes you hate other languages because they feel more convoluted when learning, but also that its a great beginner language. If you're a professional programmer, did you have any of the same fears? Would you recommend that I stick to computer repair and Python rather than try to get into corporate programming? • Programming language for fast calculations with big integers

  I'm doing Project Euler problems at the moment and I can solve most of them using my own programming language which uses direct C++ integers (so they are bound to 2^32 on my machine). However, at times there are problems which require me to work with very high numbers, I can't do that with native integers. So I implemented a BigInt library in my language which unfortunately gets extremely slow at times. Is there a programming language suitable for very efficient handling of big numbers? I mean that I want to do the things I could do in other programming languages with it (variables, loops, etc.), but in a faster way. If you have got tips for workarounds of the 2^32 limit in my language/C++/other languages, please tell me too!

• In game programming are global variables bad?

  I know my gut reaction to global variables is "badd!" but in the two game development courses I've taken at my college globals were used extensively, and now in the DirectX 9 game programming tutorial I am using (www.directxtutorial.com) I'm being told globals are okay in game programming ...? The site also recommends using only structs if you can when doing game programming to help keep things simple. I'm really confused on this issue, and all the research I've been trying to do is very confusing. I realize there are issues when using global variables (threading issues, they make code harder to maintain, the state of them is hard to track etc) but also there is a cost associated with not using globals, I'd have to pass a loooot of information around very often which can be confusing and I imagine time-costing, although I guess pointers would speed the process up (this is my first time writing a game in C++.) Anyway, I realize there is probably no "right" or "wrong" answer here since both ways work, but I want my code to be as proper as I can so any input would be good, thank you very much!

• Approaches to a week long camp programming course (tips & projects)

  I will be teaching a week long programming course to kids between the ages of 11-18. Most of the kids have no programming experience. I'm looking for two things 1) General tips for teaching a camp class (how to make it fun when explaining the difference between int and float) 2) Interesting projects that the kids will be able to complete by the end of the week. Unfortunately the language I'll be required to use is either c++ or Java which means that I'll need to spend more time on itty bitty details than I'd like in a week long course. I feel more competent in c++ than in Java. However if someone can show me that Java is much easier to learn I'll probably teach that instead. My initial idea is to try something like "a game a day" with games like hangman, tic-tac-toe, guess-a-number, wheel-of-fortune, etc. I'll try and update the question text as answers come in to offer more details While there are other questions about teaching programming around I'm looking for advice and tasks that are useful for specifically a week long camp

  I want to program graphical 2D games more complex than the basic 2D stuff I already know. I don't want to do 3D programming. Just more complex 2D stuff. I dropped high school before I could learn a lot of stuff so I walked away with enough algebra knowledge to balance my checkbook and do some light 2D Cartesian programming. Are there any good resources out there for a guy with a limited attention span (say 20 minutes apiece for a subject I'm keenly interested in) to learn, gradually, how to do something more useful with math in programming?
