• Mapping Ctrl+Arrow for Home/End/PageUp/Down

  I'm using Windows 7 on Dell New Inspiron 14z Ultrabook. It doesn't have Home/End/PgUp/PgDn keys. Instead I have to use Fn + arrow keys. Can I re-map those to Ctrl + arrows or Alt + arrows or Shift + arrows? That way I could go one page up and down with only my right hands rather than with the left hand on the Fn key and right hand on arrow key. Also, volume up and down is assigned to FnF11 and FnF12. Can I re-map them to F11 and F12? Existing functions assigned to F11 and F12 will be replaced by FnF11 and FnF12. Is it possible?

• Windows Home Server installation fails because it can't find the DVD drive anymore

  I've got an old Dell Dimension 8300 desktop I decided to convert into a WHS box. I popped in a pair of 1 TB SATA drives, which were recognized fine by the BIOS and the currently installed OS (XP), so I decided to go ahead and install WHS. Near the end of the installation, WHS acts like it can no longer find the DVD drives (either of them, the box has a DVDROM and a DVDRW). The specific error is gives is the "Can't configure storage" error. I've found several forums where people say they get this error if they remove the boot DVD during the installation (at the time of the first reboot). However, I never removed the DVD. After the error, if fails into WHS, so it did mostly install and I can work with WHS. However, it refuses to recognize the network card, video card and while it shows the two DVD drives, any CD/DVD I insert in either drive the system says is corrupted and unreadable, even though none of them are. I've tried several reinstalls both removing and not removing the DVD, but the result is the same regardless. Any other tricks anyone found? If I can't figure this out, maybe I'll just install SBS2008 and fake it up to be similar to WHS with some addin tools. Shouldn't be too hard to create something since WHS is based on SBS2003 anyway.

• Home media storage solution

  I record lots of personal HD film footage and am looking for a cheap way to store all of this. I take ~120 GB of footage each month, so something expandable would be nice... something that might be able to hold 6+ SATA drives. There is a low load requirement, as there is never more than a user or two... but it should be able to keep up with streaming 2 simultanious HD videos. I don't really want to spend more than $200-$300 on top of the $900 I am thinking of spending for 6X2GB SATA drives@ $150 apiece, but I am willing to pay extra for a quality solution. Should I get a cheap NAS server? a cheap multi-drive external enclosure? should I just get some used systems off craigslist? If it is an independent system I'll probably just throw ubuntu on it since I can maintain that well. Its easy to do a software raid from ubuntu too, if I choose to go that way. Thanks

• Push a bookmark to a user's home screen in Android

  Android 2.1 (not sure how much that matters) My test hardware is a Motorola Droid (not sure how much that matters either) I want to push a bookmark/internet-shortcut to a user's home screen as a result of them clicking on a link - via their browser of choice. I know they can usually set the bookmark themselves and then choose to put it on their home screen. But I'd like to provide a link like "Put a shortcut to this page on your home screen" that takes care of everything kind of in the background/underneath. Is this even possible? What parts of the framework would I need access to to make it happen?

• Detect when home button is pressed iOS

  I have several iOS apps that all use the same port to listen for a network beacon. On the main view I use viewWillDisappear to close the port when another view is opened, which was working great. Then I noticed if I pressed the home button from the main view controller without opening another view to close the port, then the port stays open and non of my other apps can listen on that port any more. I then tried using viewWillUnload, but that doesn't seem to get called when I press the home button. -(void)viewWillUnload { //[super viewWillUnload]; NSLog(@"View will unload"); [udpSocket close]; udpSocket = nil; } View will unload is never displayed in the console, which leads me to believe that the method is never getting called. Is there a way to detect when the home button is pressed so I can close my port?

• Group Policy drive maps fail with Error Code: 0x80070043

  I'm running a Server 2008 R2 domain with all Windows 7 x64 bit client machines. All drives are mapped using Group Policy. Which were previously on a NAS We just built a new, huge, fast server. So I'm in the process of migrating all the network drives from the NAS to the new fileserver(fs). The old drive maps were mapped using group policy so I just went in and updated to the new server and selected the "Replace" option. But the drives just plain do not map. I do an RSOP on my machine and the error for the drive map is: Result: Failure (Error Code: 0x80070043) The other odd thing, though it may or may not have anything to do with it, is that the winning GPO shown is shown with its SID instead of its name. The SID is correct though. Accessing the shares through Explorer works fine, and mapping them manually works fine. Any ideas? Thanks Chris

• Cannot access local resource (C drive) on remote desktop

  I've recently upgraded my client PC to Windows 7, and ever since I can't get local resource sharing for remote desktop to work. I'm connecting to a 2003 server which isn't is my current domain. All my optical and virtual drives are being shared, but the C drive stays hidden. I checked the options, and do indicate that I want to share my C drive. Is there any permission I should change for this to work? The server is configured correctly because when connecting from an XP client this problem doesn't occur. I've tried accessing the share directly by opening the \\tsclient\c path, but this doesn't work neither. \\tsclient only shows the other drives. Also copy 'n paste doesn't seem to work neither(tried restarting rdpclip to no avail), getting Cannot copy file File.dat, the device is not connected.

(just wanted to say that; anyway it doesn't matter now as the question is closed) I've seen some advertisements about home alarms that notifies me that something is happening in my house. None of them mentioned programmability (with real programming language like e.g C, assembler, whatever). As a programmer I'd like to have a possibility to add some behaviour, that is not part of the alarm itself. This might be: take snapshots of all cameras in a house and send it to some email send email, twitter message, skype message to some predefined account send email to a police (silly, I know) start turning the lights on and off (scary, right?) etc. (would be veeery challenging with assembler, I know; but lets suppose I can use some more high level language) I don't expect that there is a alarm system capable of this stuff, that's why I'm looking for a programmable module. Question: Is it even possible? Is it good idea (my program could crash and cause instability of the system).

• Can´t install OS from usb flash drive

  My previous problem was describe here: Can't boot OS from USB drive, showing black screen with blinking cursor and there are informations about my laptot. So please look there and then read rest here. I changed flash drive and it fix the problem but now when I boot to Ubuntu (or I tried Fedora, it do same) I can´t install system. I click on Install Ubuntu 10.10 I choose language, then on next window I click Forward but it just show waiting cursor and nothing happen (same Fedora). It doesn´t freeze so I can end install and I can take printscreen (when I was taking the screen, cursor was shown as waiting, not normal as in picture, it´s weird). Image where my installation ends I think there is some problem with Disk and Volumes and so. But I used chkdsk from W7 on boot and It said everything all right and I try utility in Ubuntu and check file system and it is all right too.Image with my Disk (Volumes and other things) I hope someone helps me. • Sony Vaio Hard Drive replacement won't boot

  I'm working on a Sony Vaio VGN-CR120e. I've cloned the original SATA 1.5 drive with Norton Ghost on to 2 new hard drives, the second of which is a Seagate 7200.4 320Gb 7200 RPM, with the jumper set to limit to SATA 1.5. (The first drive is a WD Scorpio Black 320Gb 7200RMP, which has no SATA 1.5 override support). Neither of the cloned drives will boot - I immediately get a BlackSOD saying: "Windows failed to start blah blah blah" "File \Windows\system32\winload.exe" "Status: 0xc000000e" "Info: The selected entry could not be loaded because the application is missing or corrupt." I've done this hundreds of times on other PC's, and this is the first time I've encountered such an error. Does anyone have any suggestions or advice on how to proceeed, as I would rather not reinstall Vista unless absolutely necessary.

  I would like to unzip individual files. These files have a .txt extension. These files also live within multiple zipped files. Here is the command I'm trying to use. unzip -jn /path/to/zipped/files/zipArchiveFile2011\*.zip /path/to/specific/individual/files/myfiles2011*.txt -d /path/to/home/directory/for/extract/ From my understanding, the -j option excludes directories and will extract only the txt files The -n option will not overwrite a file if it has already been extracted. I've also learned that the forward slash in /path/to/zipped/files/zipArchiveFile2011\*.zip is necessary to escape the wildcard (*) character. Here is sample of error messages I'm coming accross: Archive: /path/to/zipped/files/zipArchiveFile20110808.zip caution: filename not matched: /path/to/specific/individual/files/myfiles20110807.txt caution: filename not matched: /path/to/specific/individual/files/myfiles20110808.txt Archive: /path/to/zipped/files/zipArchiveFile20110809.zip caution: filename not matched: /path/to/specific/individual/files/myfiles20110810.txt caution: filename not matched: /path/to/specific/individual/files/myfiles20110809.txt I feel that I'm missing something very simple.   I just installed a solid state drive a few days ago and I have been reading about how to preserve the file of it. I am running Windows 8 and my SSD has 256G of storage. I am using a laptop and cannot carry an external hard drive connected to my laptop to hold cache, temp files etc. I was wondering if a SD card would work. So I would use the SD card to hold cache, temp files and maybe index files from Windows, would this work and be effective (since I believe sd cards will also wear out)?

Basic file access on the command line and Explorer works flawlessly after having set up some options on the router and mapping to some folders with net use k: \\ROUTER\Folder1 /user:MYLAPTOP\Me password /persistent:yes net use n: \\ROUTER\Folder2 /user:MYLAPTOP\Me password /persistent:yes Robocopy (and using SyncToy for that matter) to a network drive however fails: robocopy c:\Files k:\Backup /MIR /Z gives There is not enough space on the disk. 2010/01/05 09:52:11 ERROR 112 (0x00000070) Accessing Destination Directory N:\ Waiting 30 seconds... The error message is misleading: there is plenty of space on the disk and the folders I'm copying are small. The router is an ASUS WL-500gp with a standard firmware. I'd appreciate if someone would be able to explain what is causing the problem and, if possible, how to fix it.

• Move some iTunes library items to different drive?

  My internal hard drive is somewhat small, and I only regularly listen to a fraction of my iTunes library anyway, so I'd like to keep large portions on it on an external drive for archival purposes. Since dealing with multiple iTunes libraries is somewhat painful, the solution I'm looking for is to move individual items of the library to a different location, without compromising the "Keep organized" and "Copy files" settings. I found an AppleScript that I assume is supposed to do this, Move Files To Folder…, but it instead copies them, and doesn't update the library accordingly. I can do this manually by moving the file, then accessing it in iTunes — it'll prompt me for the new location. I just don't intend to do this one by one for thousands of files.

I simply need to read the contents within the ASP.NET application. I've searched the Web and haven't really found a solid answer.   I'm trying to run an application setup by double-clicking the setup.exe from within Windows Explorer. The file is located on a mapped network drive, and I'm using Windows 7. This results in the following error message: The specified path does not exist. Check the path, and then try again. The workaround I found is to copy the installer to the main hard drive (c:) and run it from there; however, this is rather inconvenient. The same action did work on Windows 2000, Windows XP and Windows Vista. I have the impression that the problem only occurs with installers, as everything seemed to work fine with regular exe's. Is there anyone who can explain this odd behavior?

I added it and formatted it as an ext4, but when I went to use the disk, it said only 8GB was available. That's not quite right. So I did some searching and found that I had to make the device ID 8e for a linux lvm. After I did this, it said I had to restart, so I did... and it wouldn't boot!!! What did I do wrong? And how do I do it right? (I know I could throw in a RAID card and do a RAID 0, but I'd rather not).
