• Split screen and other issues on Ubuntu 11.10 with ATI graphics card

  Ever since updating my Ubuntu 11.04 to 11.10 I experience issues with graphics. The biggest is the "split screen" effect where my desktop is shifted to the right, resulting in having Unity bar in the middle of the screen. As shown here: http://i.imgur.com/I8nmZ.jpg This changes from boot to boot, sometimes it's on the left, sometimes in the middle. What I tried: Removing fglrx drivers completely Installing post-update version of them, but installation is broken ATM in the Ubuntu, so no go. No one is even trying to fix it (bug report https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nvidia-common/+bug/873058 and a couple of duplicates out there) Also using the open source "radeon" driver results in the same (I have a better successful boot ratio with this one, proprietary rarely lets me boot) Other artifacts are: serious screen tearing weird lines flickering in random places lagginess Did anyone experience that? My specs: Ubuntu 11.10 AMD Radeon HD 6950 1GB

• Google Sites page never shows up in Google Search organic results?

  I use Google Sites (i.e.: https://sites.google.com/site/EXAMPLE/ ) as a convenient way to maintain up-to-date info on several residential properties, info that's often requested by my property agents, its been around for about 1 year, but I still can never get it to appear in organic Google search results or Bing, even if I search the specific keywords such as the street names. I submitted the URL manually to search engines, knowing that my Sites page probably has very few incoming links. Is this expected behavior? The content of my page has simple formatted text, and outgoing links to Picasa/G+/imgur photo albums. Am I doing something wrong or do all GoogleSites pages have poor organic search rank?   I would like to use my laptop as an Access point, so that i can connect my phones through Wifi. I have done this my office laptop T410. I am having T61 with wifi module 4965. Connectify on windows does not support it. I am following -- https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiDocs/WirelessAccessPoint to make achieve WAP capability on my T61 running ubuntu 10.10. The link says something about "master mode", how do i put my T61 wifi-inter4965 in master mode. Can i install madwifi or atheros drivers on it. I am using galaxy S froyo, and it does not support Ad-hoc network. Has anyone tired to achieve this.

• Scrolling Box2D DebugDraw

  I'm developing a game using Box2D (javascript implementation - Box2DWeb), and I would like to know how I can pan the debug draw. I know the usual answer is - don't use debug draw, it's just for debugging. I'm not, however not all my objects are on the same screen, and i'd like to see where they are in the physics representation. How can I pan the debug drawing? As you can see the debug draw stuff, is show on the top left, but it only shows a small part of the world. • Website falsely blocked because of spam. Does anyone know how we should proceed?

  I'm responsible for ICT at FOS Open Scouting, a belgian scouting organisation. Our website was hacked a few years back and blocked by Facebook as a result. After we regained control over the site Facebook continued to block our domain and this is causing us a number of problems. We have tried many times in the past year to contact Facebook using their 'I am blocked from adding content' form (https://www.facebook.com/help/contact.php?show_form=block_appeal) to no avail. The blocked URLs are: http://www.fos.be and http://www.fosopenscouting.be Does anyone know how we should/could proceed?

• Are there plans for system-wide smooth scrolling?

  As Ubuntu seems to be making strategic preparations for a tablet-like experience, I wondered what priority smooth scrolling is for the team. A use case: I read PDFs on a netbook on a daily basis. Even with fullscreen, I have to scroll about every 10-15 seconds. Without smooth scroll, I have to spend a half second or so to "find" my place. Even though it seems like a small inconvenience, the increments add up quite fast. As a result, I look enviously at owners of a certain well-known tablet far too often.   What are the minimum ports and services that should I allow/open for listen and/or transmit in my firewall (I am using Firestarter) to keep my internet running ok? • Problems in creating click package for native application

  Hello everyone I've tried may times to package a native click application mainly following this tutorial: http://notyetthere.org/?p=316 The procedure works and I'm able to execute the binaries both on phones and desktops. The problems start when I install the click package. The application is launched but the game is not working (the "gamefield" is not loaded). The only error message that is given is that versions of localstorages are not compatible (that is impossbile, because it never changed). I suspect that the problem is related to apparmor but I have no proof of that. • How can i install XFCE along side unity?

  I would like to be able to install XFCE to run alongside unity so I can choose on startup which DE I use, without breaking any features of either DE. • Webm videos converted with avconv not working properly

  I'm converting mp4 videos to webm with the following command: avconv -i INPUT.mp4 -c:v libvpx -qmin 10 -qmax 42 -maxrate 500k -bufsize 1000k -threads 2 -c:a libvorbis OUTPUT.webm Am I doing something wrong? Should I use all of these parameters? I just want to make the videos compatible with all the browsers/devices. The videos are not working on Firefox on most devices and on Chrome in a specific Android device that I have. EDIT: When i play the embeded videos on firefox, on any android device, it goes straight to the end and doesn't play. It only plays if i click in the progress bar. If i open the videos on firefox without embedding them in a html page, they seem to have a bigger width box outside then, while the video is inside it. I uploaded a video that i converted. If I execute a script like: ::CONNECT SERVER1 SELECT @@VERSION; ::CONNECT SERVER2 SELECT @@VERSION; ::CONNECT SERVER3 SELECT @@VERSION; I'm sure I'm not the only person that would be surprised to see all three SELECT commands executed against SERVER3 and none executed against SERVER1 or SERVER2.   I just wondered how to create a 3D effect similar to Pokemon White/Black? It seems to be not polygon based, but created just with sprites. If the perspective changes the sprites stay sharp and don't get blurred. How can I archive this? • I Purchased a Domain that Previously had a Google Apps Account. How Do I Re-Create The Google Apps Account or Take Ownership of it?

  I recently purchased a domain name. We'll call it example.com. The previous owner of the domain had a Google Apps account. Now that I own the domain, I want to create a Google Apps account so I can point the domain www.example.com to one of my Google App Engine domains. We'll call it application.appspot.com. Google App Engine won't allow me to add the domain without verifying ownership by creating a Google Apps account or logging into Google Apps, but I don't have access to the old Google Apps account. We've tried going to this address to take ownership: https://www.google.com/a/cpanel/example.com/ResetAdminPassword?c=LONG_KEY&hl=en_US We retrieved a new password, but it wouldn't tell us what the login name is. How do you find out the login name?

• Images not indexed by google since moving to cdn

  Last week I moved all the images on coffeeandvanilla.com to a cdn( maxcdn.coffeeandvanilla.com ). The problem I'm having is that although the sitemap—generated by yoast wordpress seo plugin—points images to the correct location, google only indexes[sic] images from the category and page site maps but 0 images from the posts sitemap( see screenshot https://dl.dropbox.com/u/4635252/sitemap.png ) This website has been doing quite well with google image-search before the change, visits from google image search have dropped from ~200/day to 11 yesterday Here is an example entry from the generated posts.xml sitemap http://pastebin.com/vcMRf9VW Can anyone suggest where the problem lies? Why have I lost all my google image juice? Should I just wait some more, how long before really worrying?

  Note: by external website I mean a website that we do not have access to the code. For example www.facebook.com I want to record how many social share clicks we have from our customer newsletters. For example, when a customer receives a newsletter they can click "Share this on Facebook" which shares the hosted version of the newsletter. If I wanted to record these newsletter clicks to our website I understand we'd use Google URL Builder (https://support.google.com/analytics/answer/1033867?hl=en) to create a UTM URL but because we're linking to an external site, how do we record this?

• How do I get the Grub menu back after installing Windows on a separate disk?

  Tried sudo grub-install on sda1 but it complained about being a BAD IDEA. I had to install windows for a work related issue so I used a separate disk (I had used it for ubuntu on this computer, but bought a bigger disk so installed ubuntu on that and left the old one in in case I needed an old file). Windows installed fine but overwrote Grub. So if I choose the Ubuntu disk to boot first in BIOS I get a blank screen. I googled and followed this advice: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RecoveringUbuntuAfterInstallingWindows However, when I get down to this section: sudo grub-install --root-directory=/media/0d104aff-ec8c-44c8-b811-92b993823444 /dev/sda1 I get this: Attempting to install GRUB to a partition instead of the MBR. This is a BAD idea… --recheck does nothing. Any ideas?

• KDE's Dolphin Can't See Connected devices such as Nikon, Canon Cameras

  I have noticed this problem across all distros including Kubuntu and openSUSE. Many times my Nikon D 7000 and Canon HF 11 are not seen or mounted by Dolphin. When I connect the Cameras I don't get any notification in the tray which otherwise shows connected device. Ironically when I open Nautilus then I can clearly see the cameras mounted. I also have a request that what these devices don't appear on Dolphin's side panel automatically. • How can I allow a user to stream my videos securely?

  I've got a script that records 10 minute videos from a webcam to video1.mp4 video2.mp4 video3.mp4 video4.mp4 Then records over video1 again in rotation. I'd like one user to be able to view these in winamp or itunes by having a playlist with the four of them on repeat. (This is my way of getting around the many hours of figuring out how to actually livestream from a webcam with VLC). I don't see any examples of things like icecast being used for video, and I don't see any mentions of secure streaming. My question is, is there any way to have these videos be seen securely? I can do things like https on my server, but I don't have great access to the user's machine, so just sharing a directory by samba or sshfs isn't much of an option.

• AMD Catalyst diskless cluster

  I'm using Ubuntu 13.10 to set up a diskless compute cluster. When I use the procedure detailed in https://help.ubuntu.com/community/DisklessUbuntuHowto, I successfully am able to boot all four nodes. However, once I install Catalyst, I immediately have problems: only one diskless node boots properly, with the other two hanging while attempting to start X. My assumption is that my Catalyst build was somehow specific to the node which I booted from first, which somehow prevents the other nodes from loading Catalyst. Can anyone provide hints to help solve this? Thank you in advance!

• Application won't run when installed in "/opt"

  I've developed a program for the App Developer Showdown, with quickly, in python, and it works as expected when I package and install it normally -in /usr. However when packaged for installation in /opt it doesn't run -and I'm not getting (or can't find) an error message of any sort, as to what the problem might be. I was wondering if someone here has the answer. The app does require root access -using gksudo- to function. I'm fairly new to programming, but not to Linux.
