• LVS TCP connection timeouts - lingering connections

  I'm using keepalived to load-balance connections between a number of TCP servers. I don't expect it matters, but the service in this case is rabbitmq. I'm using NAT type balancing with weighted round-robin. A client connects to the server thus: [client]-----------[lvs]------------[real server] a b If a client connects to the LVS and remains idle, sending nothing on the socket, this eventually times out, according to timeouts set using ipvsadm --set. At this point, the connection marked 'a' above correctly disappears from the output of netstat -anp on the client, and from the output of ipvsadm -L -n -c on the lvs box. Connection 'b', however, remains ESTABLISHED according to netstat -anp on the real server box. Why is this? Can I force lvs to properly reset the connection to the real server?

• Which part of the computer needs all the power from the PSU?

  A couple years ago I was building a new Core 2 Quad system and after reading all the reviews was convinced that I would need at least a 400 watt power supply unit (PSU). I bought a 500W Antec EarthWatts However, last year I bought a Kill-A-Watt power meter to test some things around our house and found that my PC was only using 80W of power while idle! (C2Q, 4GB RAM, SATA HD, & DVD burner) Well, here I am building another computer with a 65watt Core 2 CPU in it and I'm wondering if I can skimp out this time and get a 300watt or so unit since my usage doesn't seem to be what everyone claims it is. I'm sure that the people in the reviews who exhausted 500watt PSU weren't lying - so what is it that uses all that? The high-end dual SLI video cards? Lots of SATA drives? Overclocking?

• Socket(TCPIP) Unstable

  I have a setup of a SCPI server in a Win7 PC and have 2 other programs talking to it locally(127.0.0.1) over TCPIP socket 5025 and 5029. This worked well and stable in a fresh PC, but when we moved it into our production lines and the IT dept added their policies and stuff, it became unstable. The PC is connected to the production floor server but both of the programs are running locally in the PC. The connection tends to be disconnected when there is an idle period. And it takes 5-6times to refreshing the connection to get it back. I'm not a programmer myself, so I'm hoping to see if anyone here can help with some answers. Thank you very much!!   One of my VMs is stuck on "pause" in virsh. If I destroy and restart it, it will go to pause after a bit of time as "running". I can at best enter my username at login if I'm quick but it'll then shutdown. I don't know where to start with this so any help would be great!!   hi, i want to learn python using my mac. now i want to setup a python version = 3.1.3, because my materials for learning are using this version. typing python into terminal results version 2.6.1, using the dmg installer on python.org (http://docs.python.org/ftp/python/3.1.3/) doesn't have an effect on the python version in terminal, but it's bundled with an own shell under Applications/Python 3.1/Idle.app my question now is, should i use this shell for learing or is there a better way, updating the python version bundled with snow leopard? i already tried defaults write com.apple.versioner.python Version 3.1.3 or defaults write com.apple.versioner.python Version 3.0 without any result. thanks!

• Why would the 'show processlist' command speed up normally slow requests to my remote DB? (connected via VPN)

  I am running a local Django development server that connects to a remote MySQL server via a VPN (IPSec). Request times are awfully slow and I consistently see timeouts. Attempting to diagnose the problem, I logged in to the remote database and ran: show full processlist Immediately, the local server went from idle to working. The page had not yet completely loaded, but progress had been made (debug logs confirm this). When I ran 'show full processlist' several times more in succession, the request completed quickly. I can currently reproduce this - unless I run 'show full processlist' over and over on the remote server, my local request usually times out. Does anyone have any idea why this would happen? I'm running Django 1.3 and OS X 10.7. Note: I realize this may be entirely not be a question with a clear-cut answer and is probably my fault, but it is odd and reproducable, so I hope someone can at least point me the right direction. • Trying to find the life expectancy of an unused flash card like SD

  I read in the What's the life expectancy of an SD card? post SD cards are rated to hold data at something like 10 years sitting idle. I recall reading (not sure where) about re-energizing cards by occasionally inserting into a reader. Everything I read rates in read/write cycles and not physical decay. I'm wonder if buying a new sd card for every photo shoot would be beneficial if I could store the cards in a lock box? I was hoping for something much longer. Does anyone else agree with 10 years or maybe something more?

• AMD Phenom 2 is idling at 50°C, can I get it cooler?

  Is it possible to damage a CPU so that it works, but only at high temperatures? My Phenom 2 1090T is idling at 50°C and I have tried everything to get it down. I can play Deus Ex HR, Arkham City, or Dirt 3 and it hovers around 60. I have cleaned out all my fans: 2 intake (front and side), 1 exhaust (Arctic Freezer). My machine is a brand new Antec 520 high current gamer. Also: Extreme3 770 8 GB Kingston DDR3 (2x4 GB) 750 GB Seagate Barracuda ASUS Xonar DG Radeon HD 5670 New Arctic Freezer Pro Rev 2 (days old and mounted properly with Arctic Silver 5). I also dropped an Athlon 250 dual core into my rig and that ran at under 30. Is the CPU dying? I know that 50°C idle for an AMD is not normal.

  Consider a Windows 7 x64 installation with 2 printers installed. The system has 8GB installed RAM. One printer is a Brother laser MFC-8220 Printer via TCP/IP, and the other is a CutePDF printer. Problem: the spoolsv.exe regularly eats obscene amount of memory and CPU when the machine is idle. Usually the device is powered off. Turning it on has no effect on the RAM or CPU usage. The first consideration was that perhaps a print job has previously been sent to the Brother, but the queues are empty, and no jobs are waiting. These screenshots do not show, but regularly the spoolsv service will consume all 8GB and climb to use 95-100% of the CPU. The two printers - a Brother and the CutePDF printer both have 0 documents in their respective queues. Question: what measures can I take to ensure the spoolsv.exe doesn't consume inappropriate amounts of CPU and RAM?

• High CPU usage when running a CentOS guest in VirtualBox

  I am running CentOS 5.3 as a VirtualBox 3.0.0 guest running on Windows XP. The Windows host CPU usage is constantly at 50% although the CentOS guest is completely idle (i.e. 0.00 load average). I know this is a common problem related to the 1000Hz frequency that the CentOS kernel runs at, and previously a special kernel-vm packages were released to resolve the issue. However, these packages are out of date and the README says that they are not not necessary as of CentOS 5.3. I found out that there is supposedly a kernel parameter divider=10 that reduces the frequency to 100Hz with the standard kernel but it doesn't seem to have any effect when running inside VirtualBox. Is there any way to resolve the issue without resorting to a custom kernel?

I happened to notice that it looks like there's another user logged in from my (personal) computer; 19:04:47 up 40 days, 6:39, 44 users, load average: 0.10, 0.14, 0.18 USER TTY FROM LOGIN@ IDLE JCPU PCPU WHAT ME pts/4 zerg.neuron12. 18:55 0.00s 0.09s 0.04s w SOMEONE_ELSE pts/35 zerg.neuron12. Sat14 2:27m 0.08s 0.08s -bash Is this something I should be worried out - I tried to kill the other session but had a permission denied message. Is it possible we just both have the same hardware name? I'd have thought that if this were the case the server would give one of us a different name (e.g. zerg1) when we logged in to prevent confusion. This is not an area I have any experience with, so any advice would be greatly appreciated!

• Ubuntu server very slow out of the blue sky (Rails, passenger, nginx)

  I run Ubuntu server 8.04 on Linode with multiple Rails apps under Passenger + nginx. Today I've noticed it takes quite a lot of time to load a page (5-10 secs). And it's not only websites, ssh seems to be affected too. Having no clue why this may be happening, I started to check different things. I checked how the log files are rotated, I checked if there's enough free disk space and memory. • Computer can't boot

  I have a 1 year old PC and the last weeks, when I press the ON button the PC doesn't power on ( Like I didn't press the ON button ). I have to plug and unplug a few times the power cord in order to make it work. At the start this happened once in 10 boots. Now it happens much more frequently to the point that when I press the power on button it never even opens if I don't do the cord switch thingy. Very rarely also, the PC shut downs for no reason and no warning, even when idle. The important fact to note here is, the green light on the motherboard is always on, even when the PC doesn't power on. What should I do? Is it a Power Supply failure or a motherboard? My power supply is a high end corsair model, AX850 and my motherboard a high end ASUS.

I uninstalled the old ones first and installed directly from the CD I got the warnings below but the driver installed "successfully" The Warnings are amdacpusrsvc acpusrsvc: ConfigureFrameBufferMemory: FAILED.   I'm using keepalived to load-balance connections between a number of TCP servers. I don't expect it matters, but the service in this case is rabbitmq. I'm using NAT type balancing with weighted round-robin. A client connects to the server thus: [client]-----------[lvs]------------[real server] a b If a client connects to the LVS and remains idle, sending nothing on the socket, this eventually times out, according to timeouts set using ipvsadm --set. At this point, the connection marked 'a' above correctly disappears from the output of netstat -anp on the client, and from the output of ipvsadm -L -n -c on the lvs box. Connection 'b', however, remains ESTABLISHED according to netstat -anp on the real server box. Why is this? Can I force lvs to properly reset the connection to the real server?

• RAID1 rebuild fails due to disk errors

  Quick info: Dell R410 with 2x500GB drives in RAID1 on H700 Adapter Recently one of drives in RAID1 array on server failed, lets call it Drive 0. RAID controller marked it as fault and put it offline. I replaced faulty disk with new one (same series and manufacturer, just bigger) and configured new disk as hot spare. Rebuild from Drive1 started immediately and after 1.5 hour I got message that Drive 1 failed. Server was unresponsive (kernel panic) and required reboot. Given that half hour before this error rebuild was at about 40%, I estimated that new drive is not in sync yet and tried to reboot just with Drive 1. RAID controller complained a bit about missing RAID arrays, but it found foreign RAID array on Drive 1 and I imported it. Server booted and it runs (from degraded RAID). Here is SMART data for disks. • How can I get more info on high-CPU rundll32.exe process?

  I recently clean-installed Win7 on my HP8530. Everything works well most of the time, but for the last few days, every morning after my computer has been idle overnight, I find that rundll32.exe is consuming a steady 50% of CPU (i.e. all of one processor). The only way I can make it go away is by restarting. Process Explorer has no information on what the process is running. If I try to do anything to rundll32.exe (kill process, suspend, etc.) I get "Error opening process: Access is denied." None of the tabs in the ProcExp properties dialog has any information at all. I have Norton Internet Security running with the latest definitions; I've run a full system scan and it gives me a clean bill of health. How can I get more information on why this process is running?

• How to prevent hard drive from spinning down Windows 7?

  I had a Western Digital External 1TB drive, which I was accessing via USB. I decided one day, that I would prefer to mount the HDD in my case, and access it via SATA interface. So I took it apart, and the actual mounting was a breeze. The only thing is, I think the device has some default power saving features, which means the device tends to stop spinning when idle for (x) amount of time. This creates delays when I am accessing the HDD. Is there anyway I can turn off these power saving features for this HDD?

• Limiting Sybase ASE 15 CPU usage on VM

  I've set up a single CPU Sybase ASE 15.7 test/hobby/experimentation system on a Debian Squeeze x64 KVM VM. I notice the CPU load goes to 100% and stays there. Definitely not a Sybase guru, only interested to see if some programs I'm running work on the database. Looking at Sybase docs it seems ASE detects the machine is idle and then takes over all processing just waiting for a connection (and if needed, doing some housekeeping apparently). Normally that would be fine but as it is running in a VM it's taking away processor resources other VMs could use - and the increased fan noise of the PC near my desk annoy me. I've tried to remedy this: set the "runnable process search count" parameter from DEFAULT (2000 IRC) to 3 in /opt/sybase/ASE-15_0/SYBASE.cfg from http://sybase.reygrobellet.com/tutorials/install_sybase_vb/standalone04_configure_oralin11#TOC-Configure-kernel I added this to my /etc/init.d/sybase startup script: echo 0 /proc/sys/kernel/randomize_va_space (though I don't think it'll make much difference) How can I tell Sybase to "behave" and not hog the processor - I don't mind reduced performance.

• shutil.copy script not working

  I wrote a script in python that was supposed to copy a bunch of files to system32 and then install them through cmd. I can do it manually but I'm trying to make it automatic. This is what I wrote: Import shutil Import os L = ['file1.type', 'file2.type'.... ] dst = "C:\Windows\system32" For f in L: shutil.copy(f, dst) os.system("cmd command yada yada...") And it doesn't work. I tried doing it step by step with idle and it worked fine. All the files are in the same directory as the script. What am I missing here?
