• Python Beginner: Selective Printing in loops

  Hi there. I'm a very new python user (had only a little prior experience with html/javascript as far as programming goes), and was trying to find some ways to output only intermittent numbers in my loop for a basic bicycle racing simulation (10,000 lines of biker positions would be pretty excessive :P). • How should I build a privacy drop-down (select) menu?

  I'm trying to build something similar to Facebook's privacy selection menu, except without the 'custom' option. It will only list a few options such as 'show to all', 'show to friends only', or 'completely hidden'. Right now I'm thinking of using simple JavaScript to change a hidden input field to the new value they click on, so if they clicked on the division for 'show to friends only' it would change the corresponding field, say 'email_privacy', to 1. Is there a better way to do this or am I pretty much on track? P.S. I am not planning on using a select element, I was planning on building a custom drop-down menu using CSS since select elements are so highly non-customizable. I'm doing it this way to save space, rather than having this massive selection menu at the right which takes up a bunch of space. Note: I'm not really interested in using jQuery, that's just extra libraries and crap that I don't want to load. I can do it in JavaScript just as easily so I might as well use that.

• Is it safe StringToHash() to use in Unity?

  I'm currently browsing through the Unity tutorials and saw that they're recommending to use Animator.StringToHash("some string") to created unique ids for animation properties (see here). Since I'm a programmer, to me the word "hash" doesn't represents something unique. Like the Java documentation for hashValue() states: It is not required that if two objects are unequal [...], then calling the hashCode method on each of the two objects must produce distinct integer results. So, according to this (and my definition of "hash"), two strings may have the same hash value. (You can also argue that there are an infinite number of possible strings but only 2^32 possible int values.) So, is there a possibility that StringToHash() will give me an id that actually belongs to another property (than the one I requested the hash for)?

• Is there a list of language only character regions for UTF-8 somewhere?

  I'm trying to analyze some UTF-8 encoded documents in a way that recognizes different language characters. For my approach to work I need to ignore non-language characters, such as control characters, mathematical symbols etc. Just trying to dissect the basic Latin section of the UTF standard has resulted in multiple regions, with characters like the division symbol being right in the middle of a range of valid Latin characters. Is there a list somewhere that identifies these regions? Or better yet, a Regex that defines the regions or something in C# that can identify the different characters?

• SQL SELECT across two tables

  Hi there, I am a little confused as to how to approach this SQL query. I have two takes (equal number of records), and I would like to return a column with which is the division between the two. In other words, here is my not-working-correctly query: SELECT( (SELECT v FROM Table1) / (SELECT DotProduct FROM Table2) ); How would I do this? All I want it a column where each row equals the same row in Table1 divided by the same row in Table2. The resulting table should have the same number of rows, but I am getting something with a lot more rows than the original two tables. I am at a complete loss. Any advice?

• HTML5-Canvas: worth using ImpactJS or other framework?

  I've been making an HTML5 game without any type of external framework. I haven't found a reason to use one so far. However, there is one thing I'm wondering about. On my Galaxy Nexus, I get about ~40fps. While that would usually be a decent framerate, my game is a rather fast paced game with a gamepad. Because of this, it feels very unsatisfying to play when not capped at 60fps. Are there frameworks out there that can improve performance without toning down on graphics? Or is there something I could do myself without necessarily having to use a framework? I've looked over the basic things such as sticking to integer coordinates, but I didn't see an increase in performance whatsoever? I did some testing with jsperf and results were virtually identical. Does this depend more on the browser?

• Weird behavior of an ASP.NET MVC application - track of errors

  Before migrating from ASP.NET WebForms I had a very good way to monitor all my application errors in the Events Log (Administrative Tools). But now after moving to asp.net MVC, all I get is the same mistake occurring every minute (something about Site Master). I know it's not right, because there are other mistakes, but they are not displayed. I purposefully put in division by zero operation, and it didn't track it. I had to implement the OnException method of a controller, and send e-mails with error details which is very inconvenient. How can I solve this problem?

• PHP - Loop thru recordset and fire event each n rows

  I'm looking for the right logic to loop thru a recordset and fire an event each n times. Searching on Google i've found some discussion on similar situations, but it seems that solutions don't fits my needs. Let's say i have a recordset of 22 rows. I want to loop thru each row and launch a function on the 4th, the 8th, the 12th and so on... Using the modulus operator as shown in this answer, if($i % 4 == 0), i get the event fired each 4 rows, but 22 its not a multiple of 4 so the event is fired till the 20th row and then nothing. Maybe i need to make a division counting rows in 'excess'? Since the recordset will be between 50 and 200 rows i think its not necessary run multiple query of 4 rows, am I wrong? Thanks in advance!

• Avoid IF statement after condition has been met

  I have a division operation inside a cycle that repeats many times. It so happens that in the first few passes through the loop (more or less first 10 loops) the divisor is zero. Once it gains value, a div by zero error is not longer possible. I have an if condition to test the divisor value in order to avoid the div by zero, but I am wondering that there is a performance impact that evaluating this if will have for each run in subsequent loops, especially since I know it's of no use anymore. How should this be coded? in Python?

  Somewhat related to this question, say that I have an object category which, depending on which type of object I have, has different restrictions on what it contains. (if you can reword the previous sentence to make more sense I'd appreciate it) For example var SomeSchema = new Schema({ _id: ObjectID, [... large number of common fields ...] type: //Restricted somehow to members of a fixed array data: //depending on type, this might be restricted - sometimes an integer, sometimes array, etc... }); What's the idiosyncratic method for defining this type of schema? Is it appropriate to define a single schema, and handle the types inside of it's members, or am I better off with separate schema for each type?

• What do you do before starting on a project?

  I'm still a pretty new project, and I haven't really worked on any large projects yet. However a few projects for school has shown me something I have never really thought of before. Pre-Project planning. One project we ran into a huge problem at the very last minute, and the other project was not divided up between partners very evenly, such that all the work was actually done at the end. So my question to everyone here is: How do you plan out the project beforehand? Please try to cover the following: Design (draw out UI by hand, UMLs, etc.) Division of Labor Timeline (especially how you estimate how much time is needed for certain things) and anything else you can think of. • Inverse Factorial Function (Prolog)

  I have to write a Prolog program to computer the inverse of factorial function without using division. I was also given the note: "the inverse of a function is not necessarily a function". I have this is a normal factorial predicate.. fact(0,1). fact(N,F) :- N0, N1 is N-1, fact(N1,F1), F is N * F1. I've read on some other posts that you should be able to just switch around the arguments, but that doesn't seem to be the case with this version. Could anyone help me out with figuring out why?

  Dear experts, I was trying to dynamically generate DOM elements using JS. I read from Douglas Crockford's book that DOM is very very poorly structured. Anyways, I would like to create a number of DIVISION elements and store the reference into an array so it could be accessed later.   I checked various questions on Stack Overflow but one thing every logic lacks. Let me demonstrate using Python: while True: user_input = raw_input() if type(user_input) == str: print 'ERROR' else: print 'BINGO' Also, we cannot use input() in place of raw_input() as it gives the error:Traceback (most recent call last): File ".\test.py", line 3, in <module> user_input = int(input()) File "<string>", line 1, in <module> NameError: name 'asdf' is not defined The problem here is that raw_input converts the user input into string so it always prints 'ERROR' and if I change the second line to user_input = int(raw_input) then, it gives an error: Traceback (most recent call last): File ".\test.py", line 3, in <module> user_input = int(raw_input()) ValueError: invalid literal for int() with base 10: 'asdf' I tried this with try and except but it shall work fine to check integer but not a string. I feel that this question may be marked as a duplicate but I think that this query is important, if logically taken.

My current solution is to use HTMLParser from libxml2 and xpath to find the nodes and walk through all the nodes to reconstruct this piece of HTML. This is a long an complicated code. • Love coding but offered a server/network job -- any advice?

  I really enjoy software development. I've done it for going on 3 years now full-time for a small company and still find it interesting and exciting. I haven't had much server/network experience but have an opportunity to work for a large IT company dealing with server setups, configurations, maintenance and some networking work as well. The thing is, I'm not sure whether to accept. If I were to take this, it would have relatively little if any coding and I'm guessing would start me down a career path away from coding. The only thing is the company is large enough and has a coding division so I guess in a few years I could transition back to the software side of things if I wanted, but I'm just not sure whether I would enjoy the server/network side of things. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Especially if you have had a similar situation occur. Thanks!

The caller specifies An integer which determines how the rectangle should be merged into previously created shapes An Anchor, which is a point that is used for alignment (right, left, top, bottom etc). (0,-1) means that position (next parameter) describes the top, middle point of the rectangle. • Long running calculation on background thread

  In my Cocos2D game for iOS I have a relatively long running calculation that happens at a fairly regular interval (every 1-2 seconds). I'd like to run the calculation on a background thread so the main thread can keep the animation smooth. The calculation is done on a grid. Average grid size is about 100x100 where each cell stores an integer. Should I copy this grid when I pass it to the background thread? Or can I pass a reference and just make sure I don't write to the grid from the main thread before the background thread is done? Copying seems a bit wasteful but passing a reference seems risky. So I thought I'd ask.
