• Best way to backup and restore millions of files

  Hi, I'm facing a rebuilding of the volume on which I host the mail storage (kerio mailserver, which uses maildirs). I need to backup and restore as quick as possible the 3.5+ millions (for about 600GB) small files of the store directory. It takes more than 12 hours via rsync to a NFS share, but I also have a 1TB firewire 800 raid1 disk that I can use (from some preliminary tests it's faster). I'm working off a XServe intel. What is the fastest way to do it? Rsync? Finder copy? tar?

• Windows 7 Connection Sharing unable to access some sites

  I have a pretty sad networking situation that involves connecting to an open Wireless network and sharing that connection to an Ethernet that is plugged into a Linksys router. This has been done with XP and Windows 7, and it works great with XP. The problem with Windows 7 is that only some DNS will work. I don't know if it's been poisoned on the network above us (which we have no control over), but we've tried clearing the DNS cache as well as moving to using Google's DNS servers (8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4). Here is a really quick list of sites that won't respond to DNS requests at all via dig, although if I get the IP address I can ping them: facebook.com yuilibrary.com twitter.com A lot of sites do work though. Anyone have an idea? It may be a subnet problem? If anyone wants more info let me know.

• How to prevent any files from being copied onto the Desktop?

  Gentlepeeps, Is there any solution to prevent copying of files onto the desktop? My folks and i currently have one super-common-comp in our place. And when all of the laptops are busy, we tend to do some quick surfing on this comp. I prefer to keep things freakishly organized in this comp and one thing i hate is having those off-shoot irritating forwarded downloads on my desktop. Is there some way to restrict files from being copied onto the desktop? I tried making the administrator user's desktop folder as read-only :P . That doesn't solve the problem. Any other ideas/software/solutions? cheers.

• Multiple domains, one config, hosted on apache2

  First a quick disclaimer, I'm not a 'server guy' or a 'unix pro' or anything like that, I'm a web programmer who got stuck doing server works since I ran linux (ubuntu) on my netbook. I'm trying to set up an apache server running on Debian to automagically serve multiple domains, each domain needs to have its own directory in /var/www. Since this is the last thing I do for this company I really need it to be easy for my successor (who is even more a beginner at servers than I am), to create more domains without having to muck around with ssh or /etc/apache2/sites-available, so what I'm looking for is basically any magic mumbo-jumbo in default (or apt-get, or conf.d) that makes the server start serving any domain that has a matching folder in /var/www they will ofcourse have to initiate domain transfers the usual way. I have no problem setting up domains individually. Ick... hope the above makes sense to someone.

• Windows Batch Scripting: Newest File Matching a Pattern

  This would be lightning quick in linux, but I'm not familiar enough with windows flavour of batch scripting. Basically I want to look for a series of files matching a certain wildcard, and get the one with the most recent modified date. I've gotten as far as: for %%X in (*.exe) do ( REM Do stuff.... ) But I'm not sure what manner of comparison operators there are, or if there's a better way of doing this. Anyone offer up any good solutions? Ideally it would involve a vanilla install of Vista; so no special trickery like cygwin/etc.

  all. My company host all the software, including application and website in one local ubuntu server. But recently we start to use Amazon EC2, and want to move the whole server to cloud. Is there anyway to copy the entire server to EC2? OS is the same, ubuntu 12.04, and just one server, and one user account. On EC2 is also one instance, one account. I don't know whether there is a simple and quick way to do that. Thanks a lot!!

  Quick question about how to get weather alerts with conky. I'm using the following bit of code: ${execpi 3600 ~/.conky/scripts/conky-rss.sh "http://www.weather.gov/alerts/wwarssget.php?zone=MDZ006"|sed '1,3d'|fold -sw 62} This (correctly) display a message to the effect "There are no weather alerts for ...." when there are no weather alerts. However, when there is an alert, it simply displays a message like "Short-term forecast for ..." with no further information. Any suggestions? How are other people getting weather alert info in their conkys?

• AuthResend query string being appended to URL

  One of our clients is having an issue where POSTBACK seems to be broken when they connect to our Sharepoint application. When they navigate to a URL, an erroneous query string gets appended to the URL, so the end of the URL becomes: .../default.aspx&AuthResend1908BC2350124b5095AB75012FA405BA this isn't something that appears on any other clients computers or ours internally. This is the only difference and it seems to be breaking their pages. I had a quick Google and it seems that it's to do with a Microsoft ISA server, but I have no experience with that. Is this a bug or setting on their ISA server?

• IIS replaces redirect status header from PHP with 302 Redirect

  Hello I hope I am posting this in the correct place... I'm having an issue with a 301 redirect in php. Looking at the headers, if I do a simple 301 redirect, it actually appears as a 302 redirect which is not what I am after. This is the php code: header("Status: 301 Moved Permanently"); header('Location: newurl'); It is running on the latest version of php, IIS7 and uses the FastCGI module (which is apparently where this bug could exist). • Using VLANs that are routed together?

  I have a quick question that's bugging me the more I read about VLANs. So far I understand that they are useful for dividing the network into sub-sections, but if you route them together does that not remove any security benefit? As an example, if I created a VLAN on my home network which was simply one computer, one server and one router.if I wanted to divide the network between computers and servers I could put the computer on VLAN 10 and the server on VLAN 20. Then the computer would no longer be able to communicate with the server - unless I added a static route to the router that connected the two together, basically telling VLAN 10 that VLAN 20 exists and how to communicate with it. The VLANs would then be connected in a similar way to a 'flat' network that has no VLANs. Therefore, surely, all security benefits are lost. Am I missing something?

• Ubuntu 10.04 LTS - good enough to jump on it?

  I'm currently planning to get a VPS from VPS.net for a PHP project. I personally haven't used CentOS (which is recommended all the time) and this is not a good time for me to start learning it, so I want to stick with Ubuntu, as that's the one I have experience with. Now there's the good ol' 8.04 LTS that's well supported, however, 10.04 LTS was released two days ago. I installed it on my laptop and it is pretty slick (doesn't matter for a server) and quick. But I am skeptical about it: Has anyone tried it in a production environment so far? How does it perform versus 8.04? Any serious bugs so far?

• How to get a good current VMWare browser appliance?

  I'd like to have a small VMWare virtual machine that runs a copy of Firefox, with Flash enabled. (Or some equivalently-capable browser.) I tried doing some Google searching with no luck finding good keywords, and tried looking through VMWare's "marketplace" of VMs, but all I found were things from 2006 or so. Is there a reasonably easy way to get a current one? Ideally, I'd like to just download one somewhere, but in the alternative, a quick how-to guide would be useful. I know I could go through the whole process of getting a full-Linux-install VM and setting things up, but that seems like quite a lot of trouble and ends up with a pretty heavyweight solution to the problem, so I'm hoping there's a simpler way.

• Can you use a USB dongle inside a VMWare ESX Virual Machine?

  Howdy, I need to know if a USB dongle that is required as a license key for a piece of software will accessible from the physical host machine. This will be a small vSphere 4 installation targeting the quick backup and system restore capabilities of VMWare, not specifically HA, so I am not to worried about the virtual machine automatically failing over to another physical machine and the dongle not being accessible.   I work in the IT department of a training center, we still offer XP and Office 2003 trainings but also offer Vista and Win7 and Office 2007. Currently, we use VMs on VMware Server but this is obviously not a superb choice. We're thinking of implementing something like VDI (brainstorm phase, we hardly have any details) but I decided to check here if people would have some clever alternatives. Requirements: * Flexible when it comes to deployment * Centralized management would be a big plus * Allow for different software, whether they be compatible or not (all of office except for outlook can be installed simultaneously. for outlook you need to choose between 2003 or 2007) * Allow for different OS We have a big enough budget to implement a proper SAN environment to accomodate the virtualization of the solution, whatever kind it may be. A support contract will probably be necessary as well, because we need to be able to offer quick solutions to problems and with only 2 sysadmins that is simply impossible to guarantee.

• Proper use of disk to disk to tape backup using de-duplication and LTO5

  I currently have ~12TB of data for a full disk to tape (LTO3) backup. Needless to say, it's now requiring over 16 tapes so I'm looking at other solutions. Here is what I've come up with. I'd like to hear the community's thoughts. Server for Disk-to-Disk BackupExec 2010 Using De-duplication Technology 20+TB worth of SATA drives LTO5 robotic library connected via SAS 1Gbps NIC connected to network What I envision is doing a full backup of my entire network which will initially take a long time over the 1Gbps NIC but once the de-duplication kicks in backups should be quick. I will then use the LTO5 to make disk to tape backups and archive those accordingly. What does everyone think? Any faster way of doing the initial full backup over the 1Gbps NIC? What will be my pain points? Is there a better way of doing what I'm trying to achieve?

• How can I do `dir *.mp3` in bash?

  Hi all, On Windows I used to quickly run a dir *.mp3 to find all files with an mp3 extension in the current directory. Is there a similarly quick way to do it with bash? The ls command seems to have a way to ignore a pattern, but not to show only the pattern. I can do find . -maxdepth 1 -iname '*.mp3' or ls|grep -i '\.mp3$' but neither of these flow out of my fingers in half a second or less;) Any quicker alternatives? TIA Andy

• Exchange 2003 Sending Double E-mails?

  Hello there, We have an exchange 2003 single-machine setup that is behaving very oddly. For various users it sends the same e-mail twice (I've checked the logs and each e-mail has a unique mail identifier which confirms that the problem is not the same e-mail being received twice, but it being sent twice) I've done a quick search and found tons of information regarding POP3/IMAP connectors etc, however these Employes are using Outlook 2003/2007 in Cached Mode. The Symantec AntiVirus for Mail is also not causing the issue, it's correctly scanning both e-mails coming through. Any ideas?

  Hello, I am trying to search for all of my mail that does not have a label. I label all of my mail then archive it but I think throughout the years I have forgotten some. Is there anyway I can search for all mail that does not have a label? Idea I had: Go to my All Mail and apply an arbitrary label to all of them, then go to each of my labels and remove my arbitrary one. However, is there a quick way to add a label to ALL mail for this idea to work? Also, I think this will apply it to even my sent mail instead of just mail that was sent to me? • Dual boot - disk partition issues basic vs dynamic disk

  I have a lenovo X1 that I am looking to dual boot windows and ubuntu on. I am having an issue. The disk came with 4 partitions SYSTEM_DRV, Windows C:, Lenovov Recovery, Hibernate Partition I have a SSD (250 gb) I have shrunk Windows C: so that I have 100gb of unallocated space. My plan was to install ubuntu on that. But when I try to create a new partition to install ubuntu on. Windows is saying I have to convert to a dynamic disk. I don't really understand the difference between Dyanimc and Basic disk but a quick search I am assuming I dont want to do this as I boot from this disk? Any suggestions on what I can do to dual boot? Thanks

I write a lot of code and I've found these shortcuts to be very helpful. Here is a quick overview of the deletion shortcuts (http://lifehacker.com/5803041/the-mac-os-x-delete-key-it-goes-both-ways); the selection shortcuts on the mac are similar, except that you can use arrow keys instead of delete. • Nearest PC equivalent to Mac Target Disk Mode?

  Mac firmware has a special boot mode that allows you to offer its internal hdd to another computer as an external disk (you just connect the two machines via an IEEE 1394 cable). Only the second machine needs a functioning OS installed. Any good suggestions for something similar on the PC side of things? Block level access isn't important to me, I'd just like to be able to copy files off it. It doesn't matter to me if it uses Ethernet, IEEE 1394, or wifi - I just like having a quick way to access files on a client PC. Is there any single-purpose Linux distro specially designed to do this? It'd be nice to have something super simple, quickbooting, and small that I could install on a USB drive. I used to use Knoppix, but it's overkill as a Target Mode replacement.

  What do I need to do to get MKV HD videos playing with VDPAU and also Blu-ray discs? Lots of people say you need to compile the latest MPlayer (which I haven't had luck doing) for VDPAU. I found an mplayer ppa that says it has VDPAU compiled into it so I'd like to use that. What packages do I need for playing MKV files and Blu-ray with the video decoding offloaded to my GPU? So far I haven't had any luck with any of the tutorials I've found. I'm just looking for a quick synopsis that will tell me what I'm looking for as I'm kind of shooting in the dark. • Windows 7 backup to 3TB Seagate external drive got 0x8078002A error [migrated]

  I'm using the Windows 7 backup and restore utility to create a system image and personal file backup to an external Seagate GoFlex 3TB disk. I got the following error: One of the backup files could not be created. Details: The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error. Error code: 0x8078002A I searched all over the internet and found these two related discussions (discussion 1 and discussion 2). Note the 1st discussion is for a Western Digital drive, which seem to have a solution with the WD Quick Formatter tool. But I downloaded that software and it cannot detect my Seagate drive. The 2nd discussion is directly relevant but it does not offer a solution. I've spent days on this and am at a loss... Please help if you know what to do to make it work! Thank you!
