  • Are relative-path symlinks reliable on Rackspace Cloud Sites?

    Rackspace's Cloud Sites have a lot of stupid limitations. For example, no SSH (in or out), no shell, no RSYNC, etc... (even through cron). Recently I learned that you can't reliably use symlinks in Cloud Sites. Apparently this is because the absolute path of your sites could change at any moment, since it's a shared host environment split up between many disks/servers. I guess different account's sites get moved from disk to disk whenever Rackspace decides to. Supposedly to increase efficiency across the board. So after talking with a Rackspace tech, he said they cannot guarantee that symlinks would always work. Obviously this is because if you have a symlink that use's an absolute path like this: //mnt/disk-34566/home/user34566/files/sites/www.mysite.com/mydir If you files go moved to a different disk (or whatever they do), then the absolute path would be different and the link would now be broken. That makes sense. So next, I asked the Rackspace tech if relative path symlinks were reliable. So if I have the following link: files/sites/www.mysite.com/mylink --> ../www.myothersite.com/anotherdir You can see that the symlink simply points to a nearby directory's sub-directory. He said they cannot guarantee that even those would always work either. Since it uses a relative path to another nearby directory I'm not sure how it could ever break from something Rackspace would do. Do relative symlinks somehow rely on absolute paths underneath? Or is Rackspace using some weird custom filesystem where they will break from absolute path changes? It seems like a relative-path symlink would be fine and would only break if the user did something to mess up the directories involved. But when the tech's say that they "don't officially support symlinks of any kind" that makes me hesitant to use them for large commercial websites in Cloud Sites. Can anyone with Rackspace experience give input on this topic?

  • Shell command slow when using pipe, fast with intermediate file

    Does anyone understand this huge difference in processing time, when using an intermediate file, or when using a pipe? I'm converting tiff to pdf using standard tools on a fresh debian squeeze server. A standard way of doing this is to convert to ps first.   • Libraries merged folder views

    So I pretty much love the Windows 7 Libraries feature, and saw one use for them that I thought would be perfect, but I can't seem to manage it. Basically, a merged view of different folder structures. Suppose I make a new generic library and add three locations to it: C:\Test\, D:\Test\ and D:\temp\Test\. Now, these may look somewhat okay as long as there are no duplicates in these folders. (It wants to group them based on the included directory, which one can work around by looking on google - I don't have the precise trick on hand I am afraid.) But when you get collisions and, say, two of those directories have a Sub directory in them, stuff becomes unusable (assuming Arrange by: Folder view). You'll have multiple folders listed named Sub, which is pretty useless when looking for data. I want folders to get 'merged', which ought to be possible somehow since it can create these merged views based on artist, album etc in other views. So all subdirectories that are double (and recursively checking for doubles inside those, etc) ought to be merged for as far the View is concerned. If files have a collision, I don't really care what happens - hide one, show both, filter out duplicates, whatever. (Although an option would be nice...) Anyhow, is there anyone who knows how to get such a 'merged folder structure' functionality for Libraries? It would be really useful for me.

  • Photo Management Software for OS X That Supports Multiple Library Locations

    I'm looking at the possibility of changing our photo management software. Thinking about Aperture or Lightroom. And want to know if either supports: Having folders/libraries on separate harddrives/Volumes. Tolerates having network folders occasionally connected Snappy interface A solid enough piece of software as not to crash or behave weirdly. [ so the wife doesn't get stuck and have to call me ;) ] Background The wife is photographer and I'm the computer programmer. Our current setup is Picasa, with a "Recent/Working" folder on the local iMac harddrive, and "Archive" folders on NFS mounted Linux Server, Raid 5, for redundant and extra storage capacity. (the Linux server also syncs with Amazon's EC2) Picasa is doing OK, but I get annoyed when it doesn't do behave properly. Usually around issues when the Linux disk isn't mounted.   • Command line audio library manager for Linux

    Hi all Hear is my set-up, I have a Linux server that is running Music Player Demon, all the audio files are under a dir (/muzik) which is exported by NFS. So to add files to the MPD database, I just drop the files into the /muzik NFS share and up date the MPD db, so far so good, but I would like to keep the dir strucher belowe /muzik in sum sort of order. To achieve this I am using Amarok, wich a start on my laptop and then use the organise files command to sort the files in into a sensible dir strucher based on the tags in the files. Do you know of any command line utility that can do the same thing that I am using Amarok for so I can run it from cron on the server and automate the process? I hope that this make sense.

    I've just made the switch to Ubuntu on my main PC and I've been looking for a media player that can: Play all the usual video formats Rate (and ideally, tag) each file Display thumbnails for each file Other than that there isn't much I'm after. Banshee comes close, but doesn't display thumbnails. I've Google'd lots but I'm running out of search terms to try. Does anyone have any suggestions? Cheers!

  • Hard Disk based storage library

    We have a Tandberg T24 tape device to handle all of our long term backups right now. We decided that we're not backing up nearly everything that we would like to and that we still have a lot of vulnerabilities. To get to where we want to be, we're going to have to back up a lot more servers than we're currently doing. All of our internal servers have some sort of directly attached drive (I.e. LaCie Raid box or a simple portable hard drive) doing backups, but what we want to do is get those backups off-site. The current tape drive is directly attached via SCSI to a Windows Server 2008 File Server. So to back up anything to tape, it has to be funneled through the File Server. With the current increase that we have planned, I don't think that funneling everything through the File Server is the right course of action and I'm thinking that maybe a second backup device would be more appropriate. I would like your input on a couple of ideas. 1) Doing HDD instead of tape. Tape is hard to deal with. We have a regular rotation cycle, so they don't need years and years of shelf life, so I'm wondering if something HDD-based would be better. 2) Something accessible over the network. Instead of having the device directly attached to one specific machine, have it available to all the servers over the network. Our File Server is a 12-disk raid 6 set up.. I was thinking something like that, but with no raid involved, all disks are stand alone so they can be used/installed/removed on an individual basis. Does any such thing exist? Thanks for your ideas. I'm really interested to hear about some of the solutions you guys are using..

    After doing some research, I found that I can quickly set configuration options using the gsettings command in the terminal, instead of installing dconf-editor or gconf-editor or CCSM. But we need the SCHEMA/PATH and KEY to set the value. Syntax is: gsettings set SCHEMA[:PATH] KEY VALUE For example to never auto-hide the launcher: gsettings set com.canonical.Unity2d.Launcher hide-mode 0 And, for windows not to overlap the launcher: gsettings set com.canonical.Unity2d.Launcher use-strut true So, where can I get a list of all the SCHEMA / PATH / KEY that can be set with gsettings? No, please don't suggest the gsettings list-keys command, because I don't know the possibly hundreds of schema available.

  • Why is web app development path in Java this much confusing? [closed]

    I'm currently a .net web developer and I really like to switch to Java. I've used JSP about 7 years ago to develop and deploy a small web application on a JRUN app server. But after 7 years that I like to return back to Java, I can't find the clue. There are many web development frameworks that exist in Java world and each of them has fans that recommand it. There are extensions that sit above jvm for web development (like jRuby i think). I am confused and I do not know where to start the path of learning java web development. I do not want to focus on custom tailor-made approaches and want to remain on the basic path of developing with standard tools and methods and deploy them into standard app servers. (For example some says do not use EJBs, some says focus on MVC facilities like JSF. I'm confused and I do not know the path that i should go on)

  • Google analytics - vistor path to specific site destination setup and monitoring?

    I have a website which I am using google analytics to track visitors and track our banner campaigns. We're are promoting 'Purchase Ticket' buttons on our website which push visitors to a third party website who sell and distribute our tickets. The url on all the 'Purchase Ticket' buttons are the same through out the site... Example: http://ticketmaestro.com/events/my-event-2012 In the analytic control panel, is it possible so set something up, where I create a path-to-destination using the above example url? ...and then after this is setup: I want to be able to monitor the path visitors are taking from when they reach the site - to when they click the 'Purchase Ticket' button. I noticed that when the table goes beyond a certain size limit, IE cannot display that page.     I'm writing an iPhone app with a UIWebView which should display various html files I have in the app resource folder. In xcode my project overview, these html files are displayed like this: dirA |---> index.html |---> a1.html |---> a2.html |---> my.css |---> dirB |---> b1.html |---> b2.html |---> dirC |---> c1.html |---> c2.html These resources where added to the project as such: - Checked "Copy items into destination groups folder (if needed)". - Reference type: Default. - Text encoding: Unicode (utf-8). - Recursively create groups for any added folders. The links in my html are relative, meaning they look like this: <a href="a1.html">a2</a> <a href="a2.html">a2</a> <a href="dirB/b2.html">b2</a> <a href="dirC/c1.html">b2</a> In order to display the index.html when the app starts up, I use the following code: NSString *path = [[NSBundle mainBundle] pathForResource:@"index" ofType:@"html"]; NSURL *url = [NSURL fileURLWithPath:path]; NSURLRequest *request = [NSURLRequest requestWithURL:url]; [webView loadRequest:request]; This works fine. Following links from the index file also works fine, as long as the html files requested are directly under dirA. If the link followed points to a file in a sub-directory, then didFailLoadWithError will catch the situation and report that the requested file does not exist. Note that [webView loadHtmlString:myHtml]; cannot be part of the solution, as I need back and forward buttons to work in my web view. So the question is: How can I follow a relative link to an html file in a sub directory within my resources? I've been all over stackoverflow and the rest of the tubes for the past few days trying to figure this one out, but nowhere have I come across the solution to this exact problem. Any insight at all would be very, very much appreciated!

    I have UserControls in a Controls folder in my solution: /Controls/TheControl.ascx If specify the following: <a runat="server" href="./?pg=1">link text</a> ASP.Net seems to want to rewrite the path to point to the absolute location. For example, If the control is on site.com/products/fish/cans.aspx the link href will be rewritten to read <a href="../../Controls/?pg=1 Why does Asp.Net rewrite these control paths, and is there an elegant way to fix it?

    When I run an executable I created, it uses the jvm.dll from C:\Windows\System32. But I want it to use the jvm.dll in C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.6.0_17\jre\bin\server. C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.6.0_17\jre\bin\server is in my PATH environment variable. Does anyone know how to accomplish this? Thanks.

  • Makefiles, symlinked folder & relative paths

    Let say I have the following folders: /A/C /D/B/E /D/B/C (this is a symlink to /A/C created by ln -s) When one of the makefiles tries to use the path /D/B/C/../E it gets a "no file or directory" error. I understand why this happens; /A/E does not exist. However I have to use symlinks to populate the B folder and create the build tree (very long story). Any ideas?
