• Can web applications running on IIS7 Windows Server 2008 R2 be forced to immediately detect changes to hosts file?

  We have several web applications running on several load-balanced servers. We want to have our web applications communicate with each other without first traversing outside the load balancer. For example: http://appA.example.com is running on 192.0.2.1 and 192.0.2.2 http://appB.example.com is also running on 192.0.2.1 and 192.0.2.2 The load balancer's public IP address is 198.51.100.3 By default, when appA on 192.0.2.1 makes a call to a WCF service hosted in appB, the HTTP request is routed to 192.51.100.3; this establishes a new session and the load balancer will direct the call to either of the two servers We want the call to be routed to the instance of appB running on the same server so we add 192.0.2.1 appB.example.com to the hosts file on 192.0.2.1. This eventually works, but we either have to wait for the app pool to naturally recycle or do a manual reset before appA sees the new address. Is there any way to have the change automatically detected without having to recycle the app pool?

• Win XP Pro SP3 MUP.SYS last driver to load before freeze. Can't boot into XP CD / Recovery Console

  I've tried everything and have even looked at the thread on this site "Fresh installation of XP hangs after MUP.SYS" but nothing. I'm running Memtest86+ v4.00 but no luck (everything looks good) It freezes at windows boot screen, not even 1 green block shows up in the loader. I go into safemode and it stops at MUP.SYS, it's probably not MUP.SYS that is the problem but it's probably the next file that is trying to load or something. The end-user has not installed anything at all that could be problematic. I have pulled the HDD out and put it into another pc and have checked it, nothing suspicious at all. It's just as clean as when I first cleaned it up and secured it. Someone / anyone please help! :) Thank you!

I'm a complete beginner when it comes to this - what is happening, and how can I fix it? A search of my system for "php_msyql.dll" reveals nothing. Does it have to do with how I compiled it? I don't have the original version of php that came with the mac, I think - I may have reinstalled it somewhere along the way. Any help would be appreciated!

• Fedora 12 How to Force a Display to Load on Boot even when no Monitor is Attached

  When booting Fedora 12 with no monitor connected, if I connect a monitor later it gives a no signal error. I think it is set to auto-detect if a monitor is connected or not and load a display based of that. Since it initially detects no monitor no display is loaded. What I would like to do is have it act as if a monitor was always connected and provide the display signal always. I don't know if this is the issue or not but if you know how I might be able to fix this issue so that I can connect a monitor whenever I feel like it without having to restart that would be best.   Related to an another question I asked. This question seems similar but I'm wondering if there are any updates. To support a single site that has users all over the world, I will create EC2 web servers in the US, Asia and Europe regions. The web server instances in the US and Asia regions will be backed by RDS replicas. Is it possible to load balance across these three regions? So when a customer from Spain goes to example.com, she should be routed to the EC2 instances in Europe region, a customer in Miami should be sent to the instance in Eastern US region, etc. Is this possible to do this with just AWS features? Are there docs on how to set this up?

• GRUB-2 Bootloader fails to load for lack of floppy drive. Ubuntu 10.4 & Windows XP

  2010.07.21 while trying to install Ubuntu 10.4 Hello all, I've been trying to install Ubuntu 10.04 on my Dell workstation and am unable to get the Grub-2 bootloader to load properly. It seems to be failing for lack of a floppy drive on the system resulting in an error message that reads : error: fd0 cannot get C/H/S values. I've gone through the Grub-2 page at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Grub2 to no avail and other sources having similar problems have likewise turned up no solutions. I would certainly appreciate any insight, here's the background: A while back I was trying to install a different version of Linux and had the same problems, then had to set the project aside for a bit. I don't think this has anything to do with Linux or Ubuntu per se, but rather Grub. The system is an old (4-5 years) Dell workstation that has one drive (128 GB) set up for Windows XP and a second new drive (500GB) which I installed for Linux. There is a DVD/CD drive and the system contains no floppy drive at all. In one attempt to get this working I tried modifying the BIOS to indicate there was a floppy drive - this created a failure earlier in the chain with the BIOS failing to load properly, not unexpected, just a shot in the dark at that point. At the moment I am considering just running out to buy and install a cheap floppy drive to see if that helps. I'll never use the thing though so I'd rather find a solution that doesn't require me to spend money on useless hardware. • how do i set index priorty on nginx in order to load index.html before wordpress' .php files

  hello there, gents. I'm an absolute beginner in linux, the CLI, as well as nginx and wordpress. i'm trying to make a 'coming soon' landing page that will take priority over the main wordpress installation i just set up. I want to make .html load before php, or get information on the Best Practices approach to this. I just now realized i could easily use the wordpress' generic "under construction" page and modify it. I'm sure it has one; i'm sure there's a plugin. Stats linode 1024 ubuntu 12.04 nginx 1.6.1 single wordpress installation (for now) set up using easyengine, but going to restart and configure nginx for my linode specifically probably. I managed to find one piece of instruction on how to change the httpd file to specify priority for apache 2, but did not find the same documentation for nginx. If it's not on the first page of google, then serverfault needs the question answered! Viva la Server Fault first page results!

• How do I stop Firefox on Ubuntu from trying to load whatever is in my clipboard when I middle-click

  In Firefox on Ubuntu, if I middle-click anywhere on a page that's not a link, it seems to treat whatever text is in the clipboard as a URL and tries to load it. This is annoying, since if I either accidentally click the middle button or (more often) miss a link when trying to middle-click it, I'll either go to whatever URL is in my clipboard or get an alert saying: The URL is invalid and cannot be loaded Is there any way of either: a) Disabling this functionality so that middle-click on a non-link does nothing (maybe an about:config setting?, or b) Making the functionality more intelligent, so that it will only try and open text if it looks like a URL (this seems like a job for a plugin).

• Unable to load PHP5 with a new installation of Apache?

  Cannot load /usr/lib/apache2/modules/libphp5.so into server: /usr/lib/apache2/modules/libphp5.so: undefined symbol: unixd_config I spent the last hour or so googling, and it seems that I have to create a new PHP5 after installing my new Apache (2.4.2). Debian didn't have Apache 2.4.2 and it's a requirement I was given. I still have the PHP 5.4.4 from Debian wheezy repository. I tried including it in the new Apache 2.4.2 that I installed, but it throws the error you see above. Is there a way to "reglue" everything? I was going to just install a fresh PHP, but I ran into some errors on ./configure, so I wanted to see if there were easier ways before I spend more time on installing a new copy.

• How can I move a load of zone records from a web based system to text based one?

  Hi there, I have a few domains with Dreamhost where I have set a load of records using their web based domain name system, and I've like to move them to another provider that lets me enter info directly as a text file for their name server, bind 9 to use. (If you're interested, I'm moving them to Gandi.net). Previously when I used a cpanel based system to do something similar, there was a tool that let me simply enter a domain name, and any available domains were automagically entered into a system, saving me typing it myself (and bringing down sites with silly typos in the process). What open source tool can I use to query a domain for all the relevant subdomains and records and list them in a format like a zone file, that I can use with other name servers?

Apparently I want to load this script as the very last thing at startup (or somehow check if god is loaded and then start the script).

• Load images in parallel - supported by browser or a feature to implement?

  Hi all: I am not a pro in web development and Apache server still remains a mystery to me. we've got a project which runs on LAMP, pretty much like all the commercial hosting plans. I am confused about one problem : does modern browsers support image loading in parallel? or this requires some special feature/config set up from server side? Can this be done with PHP coding or by some server-side configuration? Is a special content delivery networking needed for this? The benchmark demonstration will be the flickr website. I am too suprised to see how all image thumbnails are loaded in a short time after a search as if there were only one image to load. • Using a Dell PowerConnect to set up load balancing/redundancy, 1 switch 2 routres 2 private wan link

  Hi, We have different locations connected by two different WAN providers. Each site has a dell powerConnect 6224 and two cisco routers with the WAN connections (we don’t have access to router admin). The 6224 connects to each cisco LAN port and to our LAN backbone. We would like the 6224 provide the ip gateway address and load balance and support redundancy, if one of the routes fail. Is this possible?. We can't find any samples on doing this and we have tried with no success. Any help or link to documentation regarding this, will be greatly appreciated. Thanks, MarianoC

• What service can hold CPU at lowest frequency possible when on battery load under Ubuntu?

  When I'm running on battery even with "performance" frequency scaling governor, something regularly lowers CPU speed to it's lowest value. I don't really want that, my AC strip usually in another room so I don't really need to save power. How can I find what service doing that? laptop_mode is disabled so that's not it. Update: Looks like CPU being scaled down only if it is under load. If it is more or less idle, it could stay on any frequency pretty much forever, but once it gets loaded, it quickly jumps to it's lowest frequency.   I'm looking for some type of remote linux monitoring software that you can view using a web interface. And I'm not just looking for the basic load information. I'm also looking for process information, similar to the info that you get from TOP. Like I'd just like to be able to pop open this webpage to view whats going on with the server at a moments notice. For example, perhaps just a basic PHP page that is on the server that uses basic AJAX to display and refresh results from the TOP command in the page. I was thinking about writing something like this, but I don't want to reinvent the wheel.

• How do i know if i set up the nlb (network load balancing) cluster correctly???

  So ill start from the very beginning. I'm working on a web conference were we are going to show about 12 videos for a total of about half a gig for all 12. Since all the participants are going to be watching (and also streaming/downloading) at once it was recommended we set up a server farm. So i have 4 servers that i am trying to network together. They are all running Microsoft Server 2008 and i have spent the last three days setting them up and now that its done i want to make sure its all ready to go. so i just want to be sure that everything is setup the way that i think it is. • When adding second processor to SQL Server, will it automatically balance the load?

  We have a SQL Server 2008 R2 (10.5) on a dedicated box with a single 2.4Ghz processor, which regularly runs at 70-80% CPU. We are going to be adding a significant number of users to the application and therefore want to add a second processor to the box (scale up). Will SQL Server automatically use the second processor to balance threads, or is there additional configuration that will need to be done? In other words, will adding the second processor drop my CPU usage to 35-40% per CPU, automatically balancing the load? Based on what I read here, it seems that it will: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms181007.aspx However, I've read elsewhere that CPU performance gains can be made by assigning database tables to different filegroups, but I'm not sure we want to get that complicated at this point.

• Possible to load entries into hosts.deny from text file?

  I have around 96 million IP addresses that I have collected and routinely validate to be VPN providers, proxies, etc. I want these blocked. Currently, I am including the list formatted like deny ip; in nginx and that works perfectly. I want to use this list on another server, but nginx isn't an option, and I don't trust apache to handle this without slowing down. Is there a way to load this list into hosts deny via some command like aclexec or something? Are there other alternatives like setting up a DNSBL or using hosts.deny in conjunction with one?

• nvidia ignores the resolution listed in xorg.conf, even though I have 'nvidia-settings --load-config-only' on startup

  when my machine boots, I see a nice 1920X1080 resolution screen, but the minute I login to my user, it's reverted to an ugly 720Xwhatever. When I run nvidia-settings and select 1920X1080, it's ok again. What am I missing??? my /etc/X11/xorg.conf contains: Section "Screen" ... Option "metamodes" "nvidia-auto-select +0+0; 1920x1080 +0+0" ... EndSection I'm using unity 3.8.16 on ubuntu 11.04, and when I check on gnome-session-properties I see that I have sh -c '/usr/bin/nvidia-settings --load-config-only on my startup.

• Lazy Load images on Listview in android(Beginner Level)?

  Hi all, I am working on the listview with the custom adapter. I want to load the images and text view on it. The images are load from the internet urls. I just want to show the images which are visible list item to hte user. I refered the Shelves opensource project example from romainguy, but its to complicated to understand the code. For a beginner level, I just want to know how to handle the tag between the adapter and activity. From the commonsware example I can set the tag on adapter, but can't show the corresponding image at the idle state of the listview. Please help me with your ideas. Sample codes are more understandable. Thanks. EDIT: The combination of Efficient and Slow Adapter in ApiDemos is more helpful to understand.

• iPad After drill down in Split View's Master View, Detail View will not load.

  Hi, completely new to coding other than html. I have an iPad app based on the MultiDetailsView/SplitView sample in Xcode. I have a master view that drills down and loads new detail views, both at the same time when needed. But when I do drill down the lower views will not load their new detail views. If I change the master 'RootViewController' in the Main nib to any of my other navigation views they will load their correct detail views. I think it could be that my lower views are somehow not connected to the SplitViewController. I have tried many things but I am just guessing. Any help with this would be great, thanks!
