  I'm running the following statement to see what queries are executing in sql server: select * from sys.dm_exec_requests r cross apply sys.dm_exec_sql_text(r.sql_handle) where r.database_id = DB_ID('<dbname>') The sql text that comes back is parameterized: (@Parm0 int) select * from foo where foo_id = @Parm0 Is there any way to get the values for the parameters that the statement is using? Say by joining to another table perhaps?

• Client-side code and UPK

  There is a long running discussion in UPK Development regarding the use of any client side code as part of the end-user playback. By this I mean anything which requires an install including ActiveX controls, browser helper objects, stand-alone applications, things that run in the task bar, etc. We all have grown to love zero-footprint applications over the past ten years, but there are some things which are not technically feasible using HTML alone. One example of this is the functionality provided by our SmartHelp in-application support component. This allows the user to launch context sensitive help without making modifications to the target application. (If you are unfamiliar with SmartHelp, more information can be found in the "In-Application Support Guide" in the UPK manual directory) We always try to implement everything we can using only HTML but there are many features which have been requested over the years that would require some client-side code in order to work. When these come up for discussion, there is always a spirited debate about the acceptability of a client side solution. I thought it would be interesting to ask for feedback from a wider audience. What do you think about client-side components? Would your organization consider them? Do you already deploy SmartHelp? Is there a large hurdle to clear for these to be worth the deployment costs? • System.Drawing.Image for Images in Business Objects?

  Hi Folks I'd like to store an image in a business object. In MSDN I saw that the System.Drawing-namespace provides lots of GDI+-features, etc. Is it okay to store an Image in an System.Drawing.Image class in business layer (which is a class library "only"), and thus including a reference to System.Drawing too? I slightly feel just kind of bad doing that, 'cause it seems like I have UI-specific references in business code. Moreover, the code could become unnecessarily platform-dependant (though this is only a problem in theory, because we do not develop for multiple platforms). • SQL Server join and wildcards

  I want to get the results of a left join between two tables, with both having a column of the same name, the column on which I join. The following query is seen as valid by the import/export wizard in SQL Server, but it always gives an error. I have some more conditions, so the size wouldn't be too much. We're using SQL Server 2000 iirc and since we're using an externally developed program to interact with the database (except for some information we can't retrieve that way), we can not simply change the column name. SELECT table1.*, table2.* FROM table1 LEFT JOIN table2 ON table1.samename = table2.samename At least, I think the column name is the problem, or am I doing something else wrong?

• Unable to log in to ubuntu server 10.04 after trying to join windows domain

  I was trying to join our ubuntu 10.04 server to the windows domain and I ended up editing the pam.d configuration files. My aim was to have domain users log into the ubuntu server with their domain accounts in order to access some applications instead of creating new unix users each time. My system admin says the join was successful to the domain. Now I have no way of logging into the sever. Is there a way I can undo everything and get the server back to the original login using the local account? I will also appreciate if someone pointed me to some configuration that actually worked - I am still willing to try and make it work.

• adjust resolution on Ubuntu Server 10.04?

  Installed Ubuntu Server 10.04 on an old laptop and I noticed that the system is trying to show the CLI below my screen. This means that if I run a script or a program with a bunch of output, once it is done, I have to press return several times to bring the output to the point where I can actually see it on the screen. I also have to clear the screen to be able to see what I am typing at the current command prompt. The laptop is an EliteGroup 536S with a native screen resolution of 1024 x 768 How can I adjust the resolution for Ubuntu Server 10.04? What file do I need to edit if editing a file is the solution? I've seen posts on how to change the resolution on the desktop version of Ubuntu but not the server version.

• Debian Stable vs Ubuntu LTS for Server?

  Quick question: Which is a better platform for a professional use server? Debian Stable or Ubuntu LTS? The third party software we plan to use, works on both. Which one is better on it own merits? Take into account things like the kernel (Ubuntu for example has its own custom kernel for servers), and other Ubuntu specific customizations. I keep switching back and forth, and I need to decide so I can recommend one or the other to a client. Right now, I think I am going to choose Debian Stable. Recently, I have had Ubuntu Server Edition 10.04.1 have a few strange issues... I have Ubuntu setup to do automatic updates via a simple script, and every few months or so, libapache2-mod-php5 gets removed because of conflicting packages... Thereby causing me to loose the php function of the web server. Debian Stable has not done anything like this.

It seems to pass the variable, but nothing after the . works.

  I have a stored procedure on SQL Server 2005. It is pulling from a Table function, and has two joins. When the query is run using a load test it kills the CPU 100% across all 16 cores! I have determined that removing one of the joins makes the query run fine, but both taxes the CPU. Select SKey From dbo.tfnGetLatest(@ID) a left join [STAGING].dbo.RefSrvc b on a.LID = b.ESIID left join [STAGING].dbo.RefSrvc c on a.EID = c.ESIID Any help is appreciated, note the join is happening on the same table in a different database on the same server.

• Performing client-side OAuth authorized Twitter API calls versus server side, how much of a difference is there in terms of performance?

  I'm working on a Twitter application in Ruby on Rails. One of the biggest arguments that I have with other people on the project is the method of calling the Twitter API. Before, everything was done on the server: OAuth login, updating the user's Twitter data, and retrieving tweets. Retrieving tweets was the heaviest thing to do since we don't store the tweets in our database, so viewing the tweets means that we have to call the API every time. One of the people in the project suggested that we call the tweets through Javascript instead to lessen the load on the server. We used GET search, which, correct me if I'm wrong, will be removed when v1.0 becomes completely deprecated, but that really isn't a concern now. When the Twitter API has migrated completely to v1.1 (again, correct me if I'm wrong), every calls to the API must be authenticated, so we have to authenticate our Javascript requests to the API. As said here: We don't support or recommend performing OAuth directly through Javascript -- it's insecure and puts your application at risk. The only acceptable way to perform it is if you kept all keys and secrets server-side, computed the OAuth signatures and parameters server side, then issued the request client-side from the server-generated OAuth values. If we do exactly what Twitter suggests, the only difference between this and doing everything server-side is that our server won't have to contact the Twitter API anymore every time the user wants to view tweets. Here's how I would picture what's happening every time the user makes a request: If we do it through Javascript, it would be harder on my part because I would have to create the signatures manually for every request, but I will gladly do it if the boost in performance is worth all the trouble. Doing it through Ruby on Rails would be very easy since the Twitter gem does most of the grunt work already, so I'm really encouraging the other people in the project to agree with me. Is the difference in performance trivial or is it significant enough to switch to Javascript?

• SQL Server ORDER BY/WHERE with nested select

  I'm trying to get SQL Server to order by a column from a nested select. I know this isn't the best way of doing this but it needs to be done. I have two tables, Bookings and BookingItems. BookingItems contains StartDate and EndDate fields, and there can be multiple BookingItems on a Booking. I need to find the earliest startdate and latest end date from BookingItems, then filter and sort by these values. I've tried with a nested select, but when I try to use one of the selected columns in a WHERE or ORDER BY, I get an "Invalid Column Name". SELECT b.*, (SELECT COUNT(*) FROM bookingitems i WHERE b.BookingID = i.BookingID) AS TotalRooms, (SELECT MIN(i.StartDate) FROM bookingitems i WHERE b.BookingID = i.BookingID) AS StartDate, (SELECT MAX(i.EndDate) FROM bookingitems i WHERE b.BookingID = i.BookingID) AS EndDate FROM bookings b LEFT JOIN customers c ON b.CustomerID = c.CustomerID WHERE StartDate >= '2010-01-01' Am I missing something about SQL ordering? • Best solution for a team home server

  I created a home server with Ubuntu 12.04 Server (using an old Netbook with an Atom CPU and 512Mb). The idea is just to be used for a small team (maximum 10 persons) that will have constant access by SSH to the main projects and could add features with Git, and will, as well, have their own directory (with VirtualHost configured) for their own personal projects. Everything is configured and running, but my question is : What is the best solution here for everyone to work? It is to have them on the http group and then all have access as normal users to the /var/www folder (that also contains GitWeb and Drupal), or would be to create a new user named after the project (as an example) where only those with the password could have access to work (configured with VirtualHost). Notice: The idea is to have 1 person responsible of the server directly (since he is the one who is hosting it), 2 more people that will have access to the root from their home in order to configure anything from their home, plus anyone else that joins the group without any root access, but just the necessary access to create personal works and work with Git.

• Installing software on an offline Ubuntu server

  Assuming that I have a server with Ubuntu server newly installed on it. I was thinking of installing the very same version on Virtual Box (Or any other virtualization software), connect it to the internet and use apt-get to only download the packages for upgrading the system and the new software such as (tomcat7, openjdk6-default-headless..etc). Then copy the downloaded packages from the archive folder to the offline server's archive folder through a USB stick. So now the virtual system won't actually be upgraded nor have any new software installed. But would running the very same apt-get commands on the offline system without the download directive -d be executed without issues ? *EDIT:*This needs to be as simple as possible because I'll have to write a guide for our client to do this on his own and so it won't be acceptable to require deep Linux knowledge to do this.

• can't ping from virtualbox ubuntu server --nat connection

  i set up an ubuntu server in virtual box following these and these instructions.My connection worked,also ssh . Then, i signed up in dyndns.com ,i configured the router ,but in the port forward i changed the 2222 port to 80 because it couldn’t forward from 2222.My port is open and accepting connections but i don’t have any more connection from the server in the virtual box. From virtual box settings-network-port forwarding , i use: Host IP :127.0.0.1 , Host port :80 , Guest Port :22 ,Guest IP : its empty. I am not sure if i am using right the address in /etc/network/interfaces , i use 192.168.0.2 and also this address i use for the firewall rules in the router. Also,in the server /etc/resolv.conf i put that address and in /etc/mysql/my.cnf. I can ping that address but nothing more.(of course neither ssh works) Thank you

I've tried making the Vector3 a static variable, however I think it refers to the last instance of the object. How do I keep all of these object in memory? I think there being garbage collected. Any thoughts?

• Business Objects: Refresh Data problem with .NET API

  I'm currently using the BO API for .NET to connect to our reports database. In .NET, I'm getting the following error: Your security profile does not include permission to refresh Web Intelligence documents. (WIS 30253) Interestingly enough, I can log into BO, and I can refresh the data and grab prompts as I'm logged in. From .NET, with the same username and password, I can't seem to do so. Anybody have any thoughts on this?
