• yum update with shared cache

  We've got a big batch of RHEL6 machines that are due for patching, and for some reason the process here does not involve a local repo. I'm new here, I've asked why, ["it just didn't work"] and I don't have enough time to make it work before the window that's already scheduled. So the usual method is to install yum-downloadonly and run yum update --downloadonly --downloaddir=/mnt/cifs_share and then yum update /mnt/cifs_share/*.rpm which just does not look right to me since not all of these machines have the same set of installed packages. The method I tried today was mounting the share to /var/cache/yum/x86_64/6Server/rhel-x86_64-server-6/packages/ which worked, but then yum automatically deleted everything once it finished. I've looked over the yum man page, but I don't see any flag I can feed it to stop it from deleting everything, nor a flag like up2date's --tmpdir=/mnt/cifs_share. Can anyone out there help me kludge this together until I can get a local repository working?

  Hi i was trying to schedule one application in Windows 2008 server. and i can see that the schedeule is showing running in the task Scheduler, but nothing is happening(i mean the program that i scheduled is not working) and the schedule is not stopping also(i specificaly choose if the schedule runing more than 3 hours stop it automatically) i went through several links and im sure im scheduling it in proper way. is anybody facing this problem on Windows 2008? any resolution. • Is there a log showing why a Windows server did not restart SQL Server after a reboot?

  Our server was rebooted after a Windows Update scheduled for 1am, but after the restart SQL Server did not start up, so our websites were unable to display. Usually this process happens with no manual intervention. Is there a log somewhere which might indicate the reason why the Windows startup process did not call SQL Server to get going again? I've looked in the Event Viewer (Application Log) and SQL's own file E:\MSSQL\MSSQL10.MSSQLSERVER\MSSQL\Log\ERRORLOG* but these only contain records of successful startup operations....nothing mentions a failed attempt to start a service or anything like that.

• Make Outlook run rules on non-inbox folders automatically

  I currently have my Outlook setup with Gmail. I have a couple of rules that I have defined which run on different folders (lables) in my account. I have filters already setup in GMail which will make emails skip the inbox and put them in the respective folders. Whenever I get a new email, in those folders, my rules are not run (they are just for setting categories). I have to run them manually. I think its because the emails don't come to the inbox first but directly into the folder. Is there anyway to make outlook run rules automatically on those folders? A scheduled run should also be fine.

• SharePoint Calendar - Start time after a certain hour

  I am working with SharePoint Calendar list to create a shift schedule for a team (End user side of things, I am not writing code). I have added a few custom columns to the Calendar List Item. I have the list exported to excel where I have a Pivot table set up so I can see a summary of the different columns - I can see the person's name (From the title column), total hours they are scheduled for (separated into weekdays and weekends based on a custom column I added). What I need is a way to check the start time of the shift to determine if it is a Day shift (starts at 7am), Eve shift (starts at 3pm), or a Night shift (starts at 10pm). So, when creating a new calculated column I would assume the function I need would go something like "=If([StartDate]...." but I am not sure on the rest. Anyone know how I would write that function?

• How can I stop ntbackup requiring my new password every time I'm forced to change my Windows passwor

  I have a scheduled job that runs each night using ntbackup which copies a folder on my HDD to a network share. The problem is that every time I'm required to change my Windows password I have to remember to change it in ntbackup aswell, otherwise the backup fails silently i.e. I get no warning that the backup isn't being done. Is there a way to schedule this job so it will automatically pick up my new Windows password, or somehow not be tied to my main login? My user account type is Debugger, not full Administrator, so I'm not sure if that would restrict me in any way, e.g. still forcing a four-weekly password change on a dedicated user account for this. The PC runs XP SP2 on a Windows Server 2003 R2 domain.

• App pool gets stuck on reset and takes .net pages out

  Several times after our app pool has been told to reset, it gets stuck, the .net pages go down and the following error appears in the application event log: Failed to execute request because the App-Domain could not be created. Error: 0x80070057 The parameter is incorrect. Our app pool is scheduled to automatically reset at 4am, so the errors stay up until we manually restart the app pool. Has anyone else encountered the error or know of any solutions? Research has suggested it's a permissions issue, but the permissions don't change and the error happens infrequently. The site has no other permission based problems and the app pool identity has permission where needed.

  I need to copy a file from a Windows 2003 server to a WebDAV folder (on the same server, if it matters). This operation will be performed via a batch script executed via Scheduled Tasks. I've enabled the WebClient service on the server. So far I've determined that I can do it like this: net use x: http://host/path copy c:\path\myfile.txt x: net use x: /delete 1) Is there a simpler way than creating a temporary mapped drive? Will it work via a batch file when no user is logged in? 2) Is there anything I should know about enabling the WebClient service on my server? Previously it was disabled, which I assume is default.

  I am trying to create a scheduled task to convert all my .vsd files to pdf so all of our devices can read them (linux, mac, smartphones, etc..) and I would prefer not paying for something that can be done with Visio + PDFcreator. The approach of using openoffice doesn't work with .vsd files since it's not a supported format ( Method/tools for batch-converting Microsoft Word files into PDF?) What I've currently is this: 'C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Visio11\VISIO.EXE' /pt "Z:\Archive\Files.vsd",-PPDFCREATORPRINTER /nologo That is able to open automatically the document I want and to prepare it to be printed, the only missing part is that it requires me to confirm on the printing dialog.   I would like to be able to set up a folder on my Mac, where I could dump files and have them be automatically sent to the default printer. This way I would be able to print files at home when I'm not physically at home, using something like Dropbox. It wouldn't have to be real-time; i.e., a scheduled job that checks the folder every so often would be acceptable. What's the easiest approach? Automator? Applescript? Cron job?

• Where to look for regular scripts?

  It seems to me that our server freezes every 30 days around noon due to the huge utilization of xvda data transfer partition - writes are 50 times higher than normally (according to the health monitor in plesk). This seems to me as the reason why the apache & co becomes instable as (for example) all apache's processes are waiting to write their log (according to the service's full status). I am, however, unable to find any scheduled task that would be executed during that period. I have checked both cron and anacron setup and there is only one monthly anacron task which is not executed (according to the /var/log/cron - and there is nothing unusual) around noon. Are there any other places where to look for periodical processes? (I am just about to ask server's provider the same question about any external maintenance run around this time but I don't expect them to run anything time/resource consuming during the day.)

• Server 2003 Filter mobile devices via MAC

  At one of my client's sites I need to keep my users unauthorized devices off the wireless. They all know the SSID and Password because many of them have laptops that need the wireless. I'm running out of IP address's and we have sent out numerous emails asking them to stay off, but like most users they ignore IT's email. I'm currently running Server 2003 as the GC/DC (but have 2008 servers in place) and 2 Netgear WNAP320. I've seen several posts similar to what I'm looking for but they seem to deal with Linux. My question is how do I go about doing this without migrating (scheduled for the end of the year) to a new server and is it possible to do this within Server 2003? Thanks msindle

  i'm new to AWS, i'm using the free right not and it's terrific. Now, in 1yr the free expires. i went to the website http://aws.amazon.com/ec2/pricing/ where the pricing is but i didn't really get how to compute it. The price are in $ per Hours but i don't think that this means, if i need to have my application running 24h/365d i've to multiplay it for 8760, or do i have? because they write about usage, but how do i compute this value? if i've a website where people in total spend smt like 10 minutes a month and 1 where people spend 750hour a months i pay the same? i can't believe that is the same price. PS:if i've a scheduled task, does it affect the usage?

• VPS stops responding every now and again

  I have a Linode vps that I use to host some of my websites on. It's Ubuntu based and it's up to date in terms of all packages. I don't have any cron jobs scheduled or any automatic processes. I host a few (up to date) wordpress blogs there that have very little traffic altogether. Every day (at a different time) my server stops responding, I can't SSH to it, web access is getting timed out and it just dies until I reboot it through the Linode manager. On the linode dashboard I can see that the CPU is not very high (2-3%) Incoming/Outgoing traffic is on 0 and the IO count has a spike just before the server stops responding (SWAP IO is at 2k and IO Rate is at 5k). When I reboot the server everything is just fine. I'm trying to figure out a way to analyze what's going on at these random times where the server freezes up. How can I determine the problem?

• How to automount a Truecrypt volume before login in Windows 7?

  I have an external hard drive containing all my documents, and it is encrypted with a password via Truecrypt. I'd like my desktop computer at home to automatically mount the volume prior to my logging in (so that it can be used as my user folder) without asking me for a password. (Yes, the password can be saved in plain text on my desktop's hard drive - that's okay.) For the life of me, I can't figure out a way to do this that actually works though. Tried using the Task Scheduler to schedule a mount when the computer starts up, and it works, but the volume is only accessible by my user account after I log in. (Haven't tried every combination of users/options for the scheduled task, so maybe there's something else there I need to try.) Also tried adding a startup script for my user account that runs on login, which evidently is too late to set up the user's profile folder. Anybody ever successfully achieve this or something like it?

• ionice idle is ignored

  I have been testing the ionice command for a while and the idle (3) mode seems to be ignored in most cases. My test is to run both command at the same time: du <big folder> ionice -c 3 du <another big folder> If I check both process in iotop I see no difference in the percentage of io utilization for each process. To provide more information about the CFQ scheduler I'm using a 3.5.0 linux kernel. I started doing this test because I'm experimenting a system lag each time a daily cron job updatedb.mlocate is executed in my Ubuntu 12.10 machine. If you check the /etc/cron.daily/mlocate file you realize that the command is executed like: /usr/bin/ionice -c3 /usr/bin/updatedb.mlocate Also, the funny thing is that whenever my system for some reason starts using swap memory, the updatedb.mlocate io process is been scheduled faster than kswapd0 process, and then my system gets stuck. It didn't run as scheduled after a capistrano deploy, didn't get a mail either. It worked fine earlier, and I am unable to understand what wrong. The only change that was made was the deploy, but I think it should not affect the cron. I tried using pgrep cron to see if crons is working. It gives 904 as output. Could someone please help. • Moving files with batch files from one pc to a server, to a another pc - worried about disk corruption

  I use scheduled tasks that calls a batch file, that calls more batch files to move about three files from a pc, to a server, then to multiple other pcs. It all happens very quickly, as they are small files. Are there any pitfalls for how fast these transfers happen? I'm just mildly concerned about causing some disk corruption somehow. I use logic like 1. Call MapToPc if files exist then move file to folder on server. Disconnect 2. Call SendtoPCs If files exist (the files just moved to the server) then MapToPCs Move all files Disconnect All of this happens in about 2 secs or less. edit: this on windows 7, server 2003, xp respectively

• Windows 7 System Image Restore to SSD - SSD not detected?

  I recently bought a new SSD (OCZ Vertex 2 120GB) as a replacement for my laptop HDD . I created a System Image on an external drive using the Win 7 backup and restore tool and then restored this image to the SSD using the Win 7 disk. AHCI is enabled in Win 7 and the BIOS, but it seems that windows is not detecting the disk as an SSD because, in the defragger, the disk is still available for defragging. Prefetch and Superfetch were also still enabled. I have manually disabled scheduled defragging, prefetch and superfetch. I have also checked that TRIM is enabled using: fsutil behavior query DisableDeleteNotify and the result is '0' (it is). Performance seems ok, but not quite as fast as I expected. Was restoring from a win7 generated system image a mistake? Am I getting optimal SSD performance?

• Perfmon quick rundown

  I've known quite along while about performance monitor on Windows. I have decided now to create a scheduled performance monitoring of my entire system so I can find bottlenecks for future improvements. So as you can imagine this is going to run 24/7 so I can identify peak utilization. With performance monitor on Windows 7 for example where are the logs stored (c:\perfmon)? Is there a log size? Even better is the a website that can get me up to speed with scheduling and best practices of perfmon? (I don't need an explanation of what I can monitor)

• Forcing Windows to be 'awake' during certain hours?

  I'm running Windows 7 and have the power options currently set up to put the machine to sleep after 2 hours of inactivity. Is there any way to force the machine not to sleep between certain hours, or to automatically wake up? I'm assuming this can't be done directly from within the Windows power settings, but is there a third party utility (preferably free) that could take care of this? I've got backups scheduled every morning at 3-4am, and these don't run if the machine is suspended, so I just need to make sure that the everything is powered up during this time.

• Shrink NTFS Partition Windows 2003

  We have an iSCSI target provided by a CentOS server attached to a Windows Server 2003 Standard box, formatted in NTFS. My question is this - I know we can resize the backend block device fine (LVM et al.), however how do you tell Windows the NTFS filesystem has shrunk afterwards? [note we want to shrink]. I'm imagining a world of pain if it's not done correctly! This is a production box, so ideally we'd like the process to keep the drive mounted and online during the process, but downtime can be scheduled if need be. 90% of what I've found on the subject so far basically involves using the 'ntfsresize' command in Linux to do the job -- but surely Windows can do this itself? • recommendations for disk -> usb backup software

  Recently I lost a tape drive and rather than repair the unit I decided that backups to usb external drives would be cheaper. In the past I used NTBackup and figured that the new server 2008 R2 backup wbadmin utility would be able to meet my needs. It does not. I am looking for recommendations for another utility that i can use. My requirements are: -backup local disk in addition to files on a network share -scheduled task integration (or some gui options to manage schedule) -non-incremental backup Basically I could do this all with WBAdmin if it just supported network shares. I saw some links that described attaching a vhd pointed to a network share but I am trying to avoid hacks like that. If i'm going to do all that trouble I'd just as well manually copy the directories over myself. If anyone has any software suggestions that might make this task easier for me let me know please. I am considering BackupAssist but can only find a few reviews here and there for it.

• Updating shared files across computers

  I have a file server running Windows Server 2008 and a couple of laptops running Windows 7 on a network. There are a large number of files that all users will need access to. My plan is to have the files on both the server and the laptops because the users will need to access the files in places with no Internet access. I also want any changes made to the files on any of the laptops to propagate to the server and then propagate to the other laptops whenever they connect to the network. Should I do this with a scheduled batch script with a few xcopy commands or is there a better way to do it?
