  • Tweaking a few URL validation settings on ASP.NET v4.0

    ASP.NET has a few default settings for URLs out of the box. These can be configured quite easily in the web.config file within the  <system.web>/<httpRuntime> configuration section. Some of these are: <httpRuntime maxUrlLength=”<number here>”. This number should be an integer value (defaults to 260 characters). The value must be greater than or equal to zero, though obviously small values will lead to an un-useable website. This attribute gates the length of the Url without query string. <httpRuntime maxQueryStringLength=”<number here>”. This number should be an integer value (defaults to 2048 characters). The value must be greater than or equal to zero, though obviously small values will lead to an un-useable website. <httpRuntime requestPathInvalidCharacters=”List of characters you need included in ASP.NETs validation checks”. By default the characters are “<,>,*,%,&,:,\,?”. However once can easily change this by setting by modifying web.config. Remember, these characters can be specified in a variety of formats. For example, I want the character ‘!’ to be included in ASP.NETs URL validation logic. So I set the following: <httpRuntime requestPathInvalidCharacters=”<,>,*,%,&,:,\,?,!”. A character could also be specified in its xml encoded form. ‘&lt;;’ would mean the ‘<’ sign). I could specify the ‘!’ in its xml encoded unicode format such as requestPathInvalidCharacters=”<,>,*,%,&,:,\,?,$#x0021;” or I could specify it in its unicode encoded form or in the “<,>,*,%,&,:,\,?,%u0021” format. These can be easily handled on the Application_Error handler on Global.asax.   Also, a new attribute in <httpRuntime /> called “relaxedUrlToFileSystemMapping” has been added with a default of false. <httpRuntime … relaxedUrlToFileSystemMapping="true|false" /> When the relaxedUrlToFileSystemMapping attribute is set to false inbound Urls still need to be valid NTFS file paths. For example Urls (sans query string) need to be less than 260 characters; no path segment within a Url can use old-style DOS device names (LPT1, COM1, etc…); Urls must be valid Windows file paths. A url like “http://digg.com/http://cnn.com” should work with this attribute set to true (of course a few characters will need to be unblocked by removing them from requestPathInvalidCharacters="" above). Managed configuration for non-NTFS-compliant Urls is determined from the first valid configuration path found when walking up the path segments of the Url. For example, if the request Url is "/foo/bar/baz/<blah>data</blah>", and there is a web.config in the "/foo/bar" directory, then the managed configuration for the request comes from merging the configuration hierarchy to include the web.config from "/foo/bar". The value of the public property HttpRequest.PhysicalPath is set to [physical file path of the application root] + "REQUEST_URL_IS_NOT_A_VALID_FILESYSTEM_PATH". For example, given a request Url like "/foo/bar/baz/<blah>data</blah>", where the application root is "/foo/bar" and the physical file path for that root is "c:\inetpub\wwwroot\foo\bar", then PhysicalPath would be "c:\inetpub\wwwroot\foo\bar\ REQUEST_URL_IS_NOT_A_VALID_FILESYSTEM_PATH".   • URL Multiple Query Parameters Encoded with HTML Entities

    I came across a situation where a URL with multiple query parameters was encoded using htmlentities() and PHP was not recognizing the query parameters using $_GET. A common case for encoding urls using htmlentities() is to use them inside XML documents. So a url with multiple query parameters, encoded using htmlentities() would look like this: http://www.bradino.com/?color=white&amp;size=medium&amp;quantity=3 and when that url is accessed the second and third query parameters are not recognized because instead of separating the subsequent variables with an & that character gets converted into &amp;. I could not find a good way to resolve this, so basically I just encoded the query string back to normal using html_entity_decode() and then slammed the parameters back into the $_GET array using parse_str(). $query = html_entity_decode($_SERVER['QUERY_STRING']); parse_str($query,$_GET); There must be a better way! Anyone come across this before?

    Which is more efficient using OpenGL's transformation stack or applying the transformations by hand. I've often heard that you should minimize the number of state transitions in your graphics pipeline. Pushing and popping translation matrices seem like a big change. However, I wonder if the graphics card might be able to more than make up for pipeline hiccup by using its parallel execution hardware to bulk multiply the vertices. My specific case. I have font rendered to a sprite sheet. The coordinates of each character or a string are calculated and added to a vertex buffer. Now I need to move that string. Would it be better to iterate through the vertex buffer and adjust each of the vertices by hand or temporarily push a new translation matrix?

  • Why is Reinforcement Learning so rarely used in pathfinding?

    The venerable shortest-path graph theoretic algorithm A* and subsequent improvements (e.g., Hierarchical Annotated A*) is clearly the technique of choice for pathfinding in game development. Instead, it just seems to me that RL is a more natural paradigm to move a character around a game space. And yet I'm not aware of a single game developer who has implemented a Reinforcement Learning-based pathfinding engine. (I don't infer from this that the application of RL in pathfinding is 0, just that it's very small relative to A* and friends.) Whatever the reason, it's not because these developers are unaware of RL, as evidenced by the fact that RL is frequently used elsewhere in the game engine. This question is not a pretext for offering an opinion on RL in pathfinding; in fact, i am assuming that the tacit preference for A* et al. over RL is correct--but that preference is not obviously to me and i'm very curious about the reason for it, particularly from anyone who has tried to use RL for pathfinding.

    I should say that I’m fan of regular expressions. Whenever I see the problem, which I can solve with Regex, I felt a burning desire to do it and going to write new test for new regex. Previously I had installed SharpDevelop Studio just for good regular expression tool in it (Why VS doesn’t have one?). But now I’m a little wiser, and for each Regex I write a separate test. I find it difficult to remember the syntax of regular expressions (I don’t write them very often); I always forget which character is responsible for the beginning of the line, etc. So I use external small and easy articles like this “Regular expressions - An introduction”.   • Apache2 Enabling Includes module causes svn access to quit working

    I have dav_svn installed to provide http access to my svn repos. The url is directly under root, eg mywebsite.com/svn/individual-repo. This setup has been working great for some time. Now, I need SSI (server-side includes) for a project, so I enabled this module with a2enmod include. Now, tortoisesvn can't access the repo; it always returns a 301 permanent redirect. Some playing with it reveals I can access it in a browser if I'm sure to include the trailing / but it still doesn't work in TortoiseSVN. I've looked at all of the faq's for this problem with TortoiseSVN and apache, and none of them seem to apply to my problem. Anyone have any insight into this problem? I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 with Apache 2.2.12. The only change I've made to my configuration is to enable the includes mod. Here's my dav_svn conf: <Location /svn> DAV svn SVNParentPath /home/matthew/svn AuthType Basic AuthName "Subversion repository" AuthUserFile /etc/subversion/passwd Require valid-user </Location> and here's the relevant part of my virtual host conf: <Location /svn> SetHandler None Order allow,deny Allow from all </Location> Edit: OK, I've discovered that the real conflict is between the include module and basic authentication. That is, if I disable the include module, browse to the subversion repo, enter my user/pass for the basic authentication, I can browse it just fine. It even continues to work after I re-enable the include module. However, if I browse with another browser where I'm not already authenticated, then it no longer works.

  • mod_proxy incorrect redirect behaviour

    In chrome this configuration causes an infinite redirect loop and in every other browser I have tried a request for https://www.example.com/servlet/foo is resulting in a redirect to https://www.example.com/foo/ instead of https://www.example.com/servlet/foo/ however this only occurs when I do not include a trailing / at the end of the request url (i.e. http://www.flightboard.net/servlet/foo/ works just fine). <VirtualHost *:80> # ... RewriteEngine On RewriteCond %{HTTPS} off RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} ^/servlet(/.*)?$ RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://%{HTTP_HOST}$1 [R=301,L] </VirtualHost> <VirtualHost *:443> # ... ProxyPass /servlet/ ajp://localhost:8009/ ProxyPassReverse /servlet/ ajp://localhost:8009/ </VirtualHost> The virtual host on port 443 has no rewrite rules that could possibly causing the problem, the tomcat contexts being referenced do not send any redirects, and if I change the ProxyPass and ProxyPassReverse directives to: ProxyPass / ajp://localhost:8009/ ProxyPassReverse / ajp://localhost:8009/ everything works fine (except for the fact everything from www.example.com is being passed to the proxy which is not the behaviour I want). I'm fairly certain this is a problem with the way I have my proxy settings configured because I did log all the rewrite output coming from apache and it was all correct.

  • Importing data from text file to specific columns using BULK INSERT

    Bulk insert is much faster than using other techniques such as  SSIS. However, when you are using bulk insert you can’t insert to specific columns. If, for example, there are five columns in a table you should have five values for each record in the text file you are importing from. This is an issue when you are expecting default values to be inserted into tables. Let us say you have table as below: In this table, you are expecting ID, Status and CreatedDate to be updated automatically, so your text file may only have   FirstName  LastName  values as below: Dinesh,Asanka Saman,Liyanage Ruwan,Silva Susantha,Bathige Jude,Peires Sanjeewa,Jayawickrama If you use bulk insert to this table like follows, You will be returned an error: Bulk load data conversion error (type mismatch or invalid character for the specified codepage) for row 1, column 1 (ID). To avoid this you will need to create a view with the columns you are expecting to fill and use bulk insert against it. If you check the table now, you will see table with values in the text file and the default values.

  • How-to filter table filter input to only allow numeric input

    In a previous ADF Code Corner post, I explained how to change the table filter behavior by intercepting the query condition in a query filter. See sample #30 at http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/developer-tools/adf/learnmore/index-101235.html In this OTN Harvest post I explain how to prevent users from providing invalid character entries as table filter criteria to avoid problems upon re-querying the table. In the example shown next, only numeric values are allowed for a table column filter. To create a table that allows data filtering, drag a View Object – or a data collection of a Web Service or JPA business service – from the DataControls panel and drop it as a table. Choose the Enable Filtering option in the Edit Table Columns dialog so the table renders with the column filter boxes displayed. The table filter fields are created using implicit af:inputText components that need to be customized for you to apply a custom filter input component, or to change the input behavior. To change the input filter, so only a defined set of input keys is allowed, you need to change the default filter field with your own af:inputText field to which you apply an af:clientListener tag that filters user keyboard entries. For this, in the Oracle JDeveloper visual editor, select the column which filter you want to change and expand the column node in the Oracle JDeveloper Structure Window. Part of the column definition is the Column facet node. Expand the facets so you see the filter facet entry. The filter facet is grayed out as there is no custom facet defined. In a next step, open theComponent Palette (ctrl+shift+P) and drag an Input Text component onto the facet. This demarks the first part in the filter customization. To make the custom filter component work, you need to map the af:inputText component value property to the ADF filter criteria that is exposed in the Expression Builder. Open the Expression Builder for the filter input component value property by clicking the arrow icon to its right. In the Expression Builder expand the JSP Objects | vs | filterCriteria node to select the attribute name represented by the table column. The vs entry is the name of a variable that is defined on the table and that grants you access to the table attributes. Now that the filter works as before – though using a custom filter input component – you can add the af:clientListener tag to your custom filter component – af:inputText – to call out to JavaScript when users type in the column filter field Point the client filter method property to a JavaScript function that you reference or add through using the af:resource tag and set the type property value to keyDown. <af:document id="d1">     <af:resource type="javascript" source="/js/filterHandler.js"/> … The filter definition looks as shown below <af:inputText label="Label 1" id="it1"                         value="#{vs.filterCriteria.Employe        <af:clientListener method="suppressCharacterInput"                                     type="keyDown"/> </af:inputText> The JavaScript code that you can use to either filter character inputs or numeric inputs is shown below.   • Debian's Wordpress with broken plugin path?

    I've installed an Wordpress from Debian Wheezy package system and the plugins folder appears to be broken. As stated in the error log files of Apache2: [error] File does not exist: /var/lib/wordpress/wp-content/plugins/var The plugins are looking for an URL based on the full path, and not on the relative path. I can "temporary fix" the problem making a symbolic link to /var on the plugins folder, but I know that this is wrong and dirty. I don't know where to start debugging this. So any help is welcome.   • Convert HTACCESS mod_rewrite directives to nginx format?

    I'm brand new to nginx and I am trying to convert the app I wrote over from Apache as I need the ability to serve a lot of clients at once without a lot of overhead! I'm getting the hang of setting up nginx and FastCGI PHP but I can't wrap my head around nginx's rewrite format just yet. I know you have to write some simple script that goes in the server {} block in the nginx config but I'm not yet familiar with the syntax. Could anyone with experience with both Apache and nginx help me convert this to nginx format?     Login failed for user 'sa' because the account is currently locked out. The system administrator can unlock it. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 18486) SQL server has local password policies. If policy is enabled which locks down the account after X number of failed attempts then the account is automatically locked down.This error with 'sa' account is very common. sa is default administartor login available with SQL server. So there are chances that an ousider has tried to bruteforce your system. (This can cause even if a legitimate tries to access the account with wrong password.Sometimes a user would have changed the password without informing others. So the other users would try to lo) You can unlock the account with the following options (use another admin account or connect via windows authentication) Alter account & unlock ALTER LOGIN sa WITH PASSWORD='password' UNLOCK Use another account Almost everyone is aware of the sa account. This can be the potential security risk. Even if you provide strong password hackers can lock the account by providing the wrong password. ( You can provide extra security by installing firewall or changing the default port but these measures are not always practical). As a best practice you can disable the sa account and use another account with same privileges.ALTER LOGIN sa DISABLE You can edit the lock-ot options using gpedit.msc( in command prompt type gpedit.msc and press enter). Navigate to Account Lokout policy as shown in the figure The Following options are available Account lockout threshold This security setting determines the number of failed logon attempts that causes a user account to be locked out. A locked-out account cannot be used until it is reset by an administrator or until the lockout duration for the account has expired. You can set a value between 0 and 999 failed logon attempts. If you set the value to 0, the account will never be locked out. Failed password attempts against workstations or member servers that have been locked using either CTRL+ALT+DELETE or password-protected screen savers count as failed logon attempts. Account lockout duration This security setting determines the number of minutes a locked-out account remains locked out before automatically becoming unlocked. The available range is from 0 minutes through 99,999 minutes. If you set the account lockout duration to 0, the account will be locked out until an administrator explicitly unlocks it. If an account lockout threshold is defined, the account lockout duration must be greater than or equal to the reset time. Default: None, because this policy setting only has meaning when an Account lockout threshold is specified. Reset account lockout counter after This security setting determines the number of minutes that must elapse after a failed logon attempt before the failed logon attempt counter is reset to 0 bad logon attempts. The available range is 1 minute to 99,999 minutes. If an account lockout threshold is defined, this reset time must be less than or equal to the Account lockout duration. Default: None, because this policy setting only has meaning when an Account lockout threshold is specified.When creating SQL user you can set CHECK_POLICY=on which will enforce the windows password policy on the account. The following policies will be applied Define the Enforce password history policy setting so that several previous passwords are remembered. With this policy setting, users cannot use the same password when their password expires.  Define the Maximum password age policy setting so that passwords expire as often as necessary for your environment, typically, every 30 to 90 days. With this policy setting, if an attacker cracks a password, the attacker only has access to the network until the password expires.  Define the Minimum password age policy setting so that passwords cannot be changed until they are more than a certain number of days old. This policy setting works in combination with the Enforce password historypolicy setting. If a minimum password age is defined, users cannot repeatedly change their passwords to get around the Enforce password history policy setting and then use their original password. Users must wait the specified number of days to change their passwords.  Define a Minimum password length policy setting so that passwords must consist of at least a specified number of characters. Long passwords--seven or more characters--are usually stronger than short ones. With this policy setting, users cannot use blank passwords, and they have to create passwords that are a certain number of characters long.  Enable the Password must meet complexity requirements policy setting. This policy setting checks all new passwords to ensure that they meet basic strong password requirements.  Password must meet the following complexity requirement, when they are changed or created: Not contain the user's entire Account Name or entire Full Name. The Account Name and Full Name are parsed for delimiters: commas, periods, dashes or hyphens, underscores, spaces, pound signs, and tabs. If any of these delimiters are found, the Account Name or Full Name are split and all sections are verified not to be included in the password. There is no check for any character or any three characters in succession. Contain characters from three of the following five categories:  English uppercase characters (A through Z) English lowercase characters (a through z) Base 10 digits (0 through 9) Non-alphabetic characters (for example, !, $, #, %) A catch-all category of any Unicode character that does not fall under the previous four categories. (Even if so, the chances are low for a beginner with no portfolio to find an artist willing to collaborate, right?)     I think I already got the idea of the Entity System inspired by Adam Martin (t-machine). I want to start using this for my next project. I already know the basic of Entity, Components, and Systems. My problem is how to handle UI / HUD. For example, a quest window, skill window, character info window, etc. How do you handle UI events (eg. pressing a button)? These are stuff that doesn't need to be processed every frame. Currently, I'm using MVC to code UI but I don't think that'll be compatible for Entity System. I've read that Entity System is embedded on a larger OOP. I don't know if UI is outside of ES or not. How do I approach this one?

    I'm learning iPhone development and a friend will be doing the graphics/animation. I'll be using cocos2d most likely (if that matters). My friend wants to get started on the graphics, and I don't know what image resolution or dpi or formats are recommended. This probably depends on if something is a background vs. a small character. Also, I know I read something about using @2x in image file names to support high res iphone screens. Does cocos2d prefer a different way? Or is this not something to worry about at this point? What should I know before they start working on the graphics?

    People from stackoverflow have been working closely with google team to help them make the panda algorithm more efficient, so I guess they've learned a lot from the google team. Thus they may have done very clever friendly URLs to maximize the page rank. I've seen from time to time very long URLs (can't find where) in stackoverflow, but after a certain "amount" of character there were only numbers, kind of "ok passed this length, SEOs will ignore this so let's put only numbers". I've done a huge work on my framework to make very friendly URLs, and my website can come up with URLs like: http://www.mysite.fr/recherche/region/provence-alpes-cote-d-azur/departement/bouches-du-rhone/categorie-de-metiers/paramedical/ It's very long and I'm wondering if the previous URL won't be mixed with, say, this one: http://www.mysite.fr/recherche/region/provence-alpes-cote-d-azur/departement/bouches-du-rhone/categorie-de-metiers/art/

  • General input/output error on OpenOffice 3.2

    I have been working on a research paper in OpenOffice 3.2 Word Processor and I had a slide show OpenOffice 3.2 Presentation. I saved both frequently and they were not very big (no more then 5 pages of text or a few slides). A few days after I last edited and saved them, I tried to open the slide show but I received window saying: General Error. General input/output error When I tried opening the paper, it asked for ASCII Filter Options (font, character, language, and paragraph break). When I set the normal settings, a single blank document opened with nothing on it. I looked at both of the file's properties and the size was 0 or 1.5 KB, and the volume was unknown. I recently installed some updates for Ubuntu 10.10 and everything else in my computer is working normally including other documents and slide shows. Is this a fixable crash?

  • Fighting Game and input buffering

    In fighting game, there is an important thing called input buffering. When your character is doing an action, you can input the next action that will activate as soon as possible (the buffer is 5-10 frames). Is anyone had already done it or knows the most efficient way to do this? I thought of things like that: Enum list moves (a list of all my moves) if (moves = fireball) { if (Mycharacterisidle) { Do the fireball } else if (MycharacterisMoving) { if (lastspriteisnotfinished) { InputBuffer++; } else if(spriteisfinished && InputBuffer < 5) { Do the fireball } } } Any better ideas?   • Problem with the installation of VirtualBox

    I am trying to install virtualbox and make it work but it doesn't seem I can. In the image you can seem the output. If I run VBoxManage --version I get: WARNING: The character device /dev/vboxdrv does not exist. Please install the virtualbox-dkms package and the appropriate headers, most likely linux-headers-generic. You will not be able to start VMs until this problem is fixed. 4.3.10_Ubuntur93012 But virtualbox-dkms is already installed and at the latest version. So I tried to reinstall it and i got this: Any help will be appreciated. EDIT: The output after reconfigure (@M.Tarun suggestion): EDIT 2: Also installed the sources as @Hmayag instructed, purged virtualbox and installed it again but I got the same problem.
