• Learning to think in the Object Oriented Way

  Hi Everyone.... I am a programmer trying to learn to code in the object oriented paradigm... I mainly work with PHP and i thought of learning the zend framework... So, felt I need to learn to code in OO PHP.... The problem is, having done code using functions for quite a long time, i just can't get my head to think in the OO way.... Also felt that probably I am not the only one facing this problem since the beginning of time... So, how did you people learn object oriented programming... especially how did you succeed in "unlearning" to code using functions... and learn to see you code as objects...? Is there any good resource books or sites where one could find help...?? Thanks for sharing your knowledge and experiences...

Do you use caffeine when you do stay up late? Do you prefer to have a large amount of caffeine all at once, or small amounts over a longer period of time? Do you use energy drinks, 5-hour energy shots, coffee, tea, or caffeine pills? How about other stimulants such as amphetamines? For instance, I've known a programmer who dabbled in speed because they believed it increased their ability to focus on programming, though happily they're clean now and quite honest about the whole experience. • Getting "select permission denied" when using LINQ but my account is a sysadmin

  I have a console app that's geared to be automatically ran as a Scheduled Task. I use LINQ to SQL to pull some data out of the database, format it into a CSV and email it to a client. All of a sudden I am getting the error "SELECT permission denied for table", but the account I'm using to connect to the database (specified in my app.config file) has the "sysadmin" server role (bad programmer, I know; I'll get around to changing it to a better account later but I want to make sure it works first). I can connect directly to the SQL database using that very same account and query the table in question without a problem, it only seems to be when using the LINQ code. Any idea what would be causing this?

• [C++] Wrong EOF when unzipping binary file

  Hello there, I tried to unzip a binary file to a membuf from a zip archive using Lucian Wischik's Zip Utils: http://www.wischik.com/lu/programmer/zip_utils.html http://www.codeproject.com/KB/files/zip_utils.aspx FindZipItem(hz, filename.c_str(), true, &j, &ze); char *content = new char[ze.unc_size]; UnzipItem(hz, j, content, ze.unc_size); delete[] content; But it didn't unzip the file correctly. It stopped at the first 0x00 of the file. For example when I unzip an MP3 file, it will only unzip the first 4 bytes: 0x49443303 (ID3\0) because the 5th to 8th byte is 0x00000000. I also tried to capture the ZR_RESULT, and it always return ZR_OK (which means completed without errors).   I'm no newbie to programming, but I'm making the move to a career in web development, and I've noticed that so many job postings have different combinations of skill requirements: (PHP, C#, XML, XHTML/CSS, ASP, .NET, jQuery, YUI, Joomla, Ruby, Perl, Python, Java, Javascript... the list goes on.) As of now, I've started learning XHTML, CSS, JavaScript, jQuery, PHP, and mySQL, but with so many combinations, I want to plan ahead to have a marketable combination of skills as early on as possible. Am I on the right path? What is vital for a marketable web programmer's arsenal? Thanks for your thoughts.

• What tool/framework to use for technical documentation?

  We develop products and frameworks to be used with in our organization. I am looking for programmer friendly documentation tools. I have researched on few options sometime back but couldn't decide which one to use. I am looking for suggestions from the people who already used these tools. docbook: springframework and hibernate use this format and this looks good. but I believe they have customized the default xslt/stylesheet. Can I copy and use their xslt and css (ofcourse with colors and images changed). Can I integrate the doc generation using maven? wiki: this is not friendly to the technical document writers and the documentation doesn't look professional. versioning is also not possible I believe word docs: this is what we use currently but it is hard to link and reuse common documents. • Determining Connections between data in a single table

  Hi I'm a BA / programmer type doing data analysis on a legacy system. I've been teaching myself SQL to help, but I've appeared to hit upon a problem bigger than my abilities. I have two tables (generalized for simplicity): Table Objects Object_PK Table Components Component_PK Object_FK Component_Type There are 100+ distinct values in Component_Type_Code. Given that any object can have N number of Components, how can I see which Component_Type(s) appear with other Component_Type(s)? For example, the following query tells me what component_types appear with the component_type 'Component_type_1': select component_type_code, count(*) from components where object_fk in ( select object_fk from components where component_type_code = 'component_type_1' ) group by component_type_code I'd like to get a query to show me all connections My apologies for the formatting. Any help is appreciated. I've looked at cube and rollup, but didn't know how to apply to this situtation.

• OpenAL device, buffer and context relationship

  I'm trying to create an object oriented model to wrap OpenAL and have a little problem understanding the devices, buffers and contexts. From what I can see in the Programmer's Guide, there are multiple devices, each of which can have multiple contexts as well as multiple buffers. Each context has a listener, and the alListener*() functions all operate on the listener of the active context. (Meaning that I have to make another context active first if I wanted to change it's listener, if I got that right.) So far, so good. What irritates me though is that I need to pass a device to the alcCreateContext() function, but none to alGenBuffers(). How does this work then? When I open multiple devices, on which device are the buffers created? Are the buffers shared between all devices? What happens to the buffers if I close all open devices? (Or is there something I missed?)

  Hello I have a question for a c programmer out there, we have a tast at school to create a soft real time system in an operation system made by our teacher. Well that is all fine and dandy, we have chosen to create a system that calcuate how many unites of medicine a diabetic need based on his or hers blood sugar. It does not need to be correct just that we have the idea of a real time system :D But we have hit a little snag our formula for calculating the units of medicine is [blood sugar] * 1.2 But the only way we can send messages between processes is via a structure that contains 8 longs, but here is where my knowledge of c ends, we need for some way to split this double into 2 longs, example: the whole number in long 0 and the decimals in long 1 and then assemble it on the other side. But I have no idea who to do this, and therefore need a little help. We have tried but we do not have access to c standard libraries

  My interests in programming lie mainly in algorithms, and lately I have seen many reputable researchers write a lot of their code in python. How easy and convenient is python for scientific computing? Does it have a library of algorithms that compares to matlab's? Is Python a scripting language or does it compile? Is it a great language for prototyping an algorithm? How long would it take me to learn enough of it to be productive provided I know C well and OO programming somewhat? Is it OO based? • Control process concurrency in PHP

  I have programmed a simple app that every X minutes checks if an image has changed in several websites and downloads it. It's very simple: downloads image header, make some CRC checks, downloads the file, stores in a MySQL database some data about each image and process next item... This process takes about 1 minute to complete. The problem is I have noticed that while the server is executing this process I cannot access to any page in the website, even those that don't require MySQL. I don't know why it is happening and I have no clue about how to fix it. Perhaps a more advanced PHP programmer can help me.

• Closing any open info windows in google maps api v3

  As the title states, on a given event (for me this happens to be upon opening a new google.maps.InfoWindow I want to be able to close any other currently open info windows. Right now, I can open many at a time..but I want only 1 open at a time. I am creating the info windows dynamically (i.e. I don't know ahead of time how many will be generated), so in the click event of the current info window (which is where I want all the other open ones closed) I don't have a reference to any of the other open info windows on which to call close(). I am wondering how I can achieve this. I am not an experienced JavaScript programmer so I don't know if I need to use reflection or something similar here. Would the best way be just to save all the references in some sort of collection, then loop through the list closing them all? Thanks.

But sorry, wget and curl analogues exist for the WIN platform as well. As for the console - I'm using FAR Commander, and have access to the command line when I need. Moreover, even if I decide moving to *NIX, I will certainly use Netbeans or Eclipse on it, so there will be no big difference. Guys, who use Java on *NIX, could you please give me some real killer examples, when *NIX (any util or technique) dramatically increases Java development productivity (in the way the hints are given in "The Pragmatic Programmer"), or, which is also important, gives more fun from the process. • SOAP - What's the point?

  I mean, really, what is the point of SOAP? Web services have been around for a while, and for a while it seemed that the terms 'SOAP' and 'Web service' were largely interchangeable. However SOAP always seemed unwieldy and massively overcomplicated to me. Then REST came along, and suddenly web services made sense. As Joel Spolsky says, give a programmer a REST URL, and they can start playing with the service right away, figuring it out. SOAP is obfuscated behind WSDLs and massively verbose XML, and despite being web based, you can't do anything as simple as access a SOAP service with a web browser. So the essence of my question is: Are there any good reasons to ever choose SOAP over REST? Are you working with SOAP now? Would it be better if the interface was REST? Am I wrong?

• Real thing about "->" and "."

  I always wanted to know what is the real thing difference of how the compiler see a pointer to a struct (in C suppose) and a struct itself. struct person p; struct person *pp; pp->age, I always imagine that the compiler does: "value of pp + offset of atribute "age" in the struct". But what it does with person.p? It would be almost the same. For me "the programmer", p is not a memory address, its like "the structure itself", but of course this is not how the compiler deal with it. My guess is it's more of a syntactic thing, and the compiler always does (&p)->age. I'm correct?

  I am a Java programmer, and just starting to use Visual Studio to do C# programming. In Java IDE such as Eclipse, if I do not know the classname in a package, I can just type a dot (.) after a package name, then I will get a list of all the classes in that package in the IDE. How I can configure visual studio to do the similar thing, say, if I click a namespace name in a file (for example, using System), or add a dot after the namespace, all the classes in that namespace will be displayed somewhere in the IDE?

• MSSQL: Primary Key Schema Largely Guid but Sometimes Integer Types...

  OK, this may be a silly question but... I have inherited a project and am tasked with going over the primary key relationships. The project largely uses Guids. I say "largely" because there are examples where tables use integral types to reflect enumerations. For example, dbo.MessageFolder has MessageFolderId of type int to reflect public emum MessageFolderTypes { inbox = 1, sent = 2, trash = 3, etc... } This happens a lot. There are tables with primary keys of type int which is unavoidable because of their reliance on enumerations and tables with primary keys of type Guid which reflect the primary key choice on the part of the previous programmer. Should I care that the PK schema is spotty like this? It doesn't feel right but does it really matter? If this could create a problem, how do I get around it (I really can't move all PKs to type int without serious legwork and I have never heard of enumerations that have guid values)? Thanks.

• How can programmers get the quiet working environment they need? [closed]

  We have an open plan office with all our programmers, web designers and client service team. Problem is my programmer team has to put up with dance music and wailing guitars all day due to the fact that designers and client services team think this makes the office a better environment. When I turn it off (by blocking the streaming of music on the router, he-he-he) they complain that its so quiet and dull. How do I explain to them that programmers need a calm quiet environment without coming across like a really annoying geek? Any other thoughts or ideas appreciated.
