• Running 32 bit SQL Server 2005 on 64 bit Windows Server?

  If I have a 32 bit version of SQL Server 2005 running on a 64 bit Windows Server does the max amount of memory avail. the SQL Server process increase from 2gb to 4gb. In reading this blog entry by Mark Russinovich in which he states that "All Microsoft server products and data intensive executables in Windows are marked with the large address space awareness flag" and "Because the address space on 64-bit Windows is much larger than 4GB, something I’ll describe shortly, Windows can give 32-bit processes the maximum 4GB that they can address and use the rest for the operating system’s virtual memory." which leads me to believe that the answer is "yes" but I not totally confident.

• Real RAM latency

  Hi, very quick question. When I look for RAM timing, I got 2 different explanations on what is CAS latency. First states, its the time after command to read has been issued from CPU and data are send to data bus. Second says its time betwen column in memory layout has been activated. So, where is the truth? I mean, when I want to know total RAM latenci, in case 1, ot would be just CAS times one clock time. In second case, it would be CAS+other things like RAstoCAS and so times one clock time. Thanks.

• Timeout ssh sessions after inactivity?

  PCI requirement 8.5.15 states: "If a session has been idle for more than 15 minutes, require the user to re-enter the password to re-activate the terminal." The first, and most obvious, way to deal with ssh sessions that are idling at the bash prompt is by enforcing a read-only, global $TMOUT of 900. Unfortunately, that only covers sessions sitting at the bash prompt. The spirit of the PCI spec would also require killing sessions running top/vim/etc. I've considered writing a */1 cron job that parses the output of "/usr/bin/w" and kills the associated shell, but that seems like a blunt instrument. Any ideas for something that would actually do what the spec requires and just lock the terminal? I've looked at away and vlock; they both seem great for voluntarily locking your terminal, but I need a cron/daemon task that will enforce locking.

• Apply email retention policy to Inbox but not subfolders?

  Our official email policy states that email older than 90 days in the Inbox is moved to Deleted Items, not including subfolders of the Inbox. This wasn't a problem to implement in Exchange 2003. In 2010, however, it appears that Policy Tags applied to the Inbox also apply to its subfolders. How can I prevent this from occuring? • Intel HD 4000 and Nvidia GT 650 working together on laptop

  My new win7 Acer notebook has i5 CPU with Intel HD 4000 and Nvida GT650 GPU. Obviously monitor is plugged to Intel HD. In Nvidia control panel I can configure PhysX but that doesn't help. Windows system rating shows high gaming experience and average/low windows aero experience. What does that mean? Does my laptop use nvidia for games/3d apps nad Intel HD 4000 for aero? Should I disable Intel HD in bios, but how to plug monitor to nvidia? Or should I leave everything like now because everything works as it suppose to work? • Computer freezes when CD/DVD is enable, computer HP Pavilion dv98278 Notebook OS - Vista

  As the title states, when my CD/DVD drive is enable my computer freezes showing a diagonal patter on the monitor. This is what has been attempted (DF - didn't fix): (1) cleaned regsitry file - DF; (2) uninstalled and installed driver HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA T20L ATA - DF; Yelled profanities at the computer - DF but I felt better. I want to install OS 7 but this makes it much more complicated. It's appearing as a hardware issue to me, however, what do I know. Any suggestions?

• Which TCP ports to use?

  Is there a TCP port range which I can be sure will not be used by anything else for traffic between two machines? If I am reading RFC6335 correctly, I can be sure that no other applications will use specific ports in the Dynamic/Private/Ephemeral range of 49152-65535. However, if I understand correctly, it also states (section 8.1.2) that an application shouldn't assume that any given port in that range is available at any given time, which would mean I can't be 100% sure that it will be unused all the time. Specifically, I want to assign specific SSH traffic to a different port for the security benefit and so I can classify it differently for QoS purposes, and not have to worry about changing the port in the future.

• VMWare hypervisor with only 1 network card?

  VMWare hypervisor minimum requirements states that the minimum network requirements is: one NIC, plus one for Management interface (source: http://www.vmware.com/products/datacenter-virtualization/vsphere-hypervisor/requirements.html) It used to be possible to use 1 NIC only. Is anybody using the new versions of VMWare in this configuration? I ask because my colo provider will only provide me with 1 uplink (my server does have 2 NICs). I need to be able to run the VMs and also have remote management using only 1 NIC. Possible?

• 64-bit Hardware Virtualization on VirtualBox

  I am trying to set up a SQL Server practice lab using VirtualBox and a trial copy of Windows Server 2K8 R2 in ISO format. I received an error message that states my processor does not support 64-bit hardware virtualization. Although I "Enabled" Intel ardware virtualization in the BIOS that still doesn't work. According to the Intel website, the processor does support VT-x, however the accelerated tab in VirtualBox is greyed out and no references to VT-x are mentioned in the settings options available to me. Any ideas on how I can get around this? I checked around ServerFault and couldn't find anything but if I missed an applicable post a link is great too.   We had done a PCI scan on one of our servers running Ubuntu 12.04 LTS with apache 2.2.22.The scan reported a vulnerability in apache 2.2.22 (Apache HTTP Server Zero-Length Directory Name in LD_LIBRARY_PATH Vulnerability).The report states to updgrade the version to the latest stable release of either 2.2.23 or 2.4.2.How do I upgrade to the 2.2.23 to fix the vulnerability or is there a patch available that can fix this and if yes can you let me know how that can be patched. I'm looking for a relatively cheap (preferably open source) solution that would enable me to monitor and profile the network usage by machine and port. Can someone recommend a solution?

• Why is my PC boot time slow when USB HDD attached?

  I have a USB Hard disk that I am using as a secondary drive just for extra storage. When this is attached and I start my PC the second screen says searching for mass storage dives for about 5 minutes before continuing on. The same happens when I have a USB pen disk attached upon boot. If I attach the device after the PC has loaded then it is very quick however plugging and unplugging is not ideal. Is there away to disable this in the BIOS as I cannot instantly see an option. On boot it informs me I have an American Trends AMIBIOS in the BIOS setup it states the version as v02.58 2006. This is running on a ASUS MV2 Motherboard.

  The directory private lives under my DocumentRoot, and despite its name, it should be accessible just like any other dir. But if I add the following RewriteRule to httpd.conf: RewriteRule ^/([^\.]+)$ /$1.html [L] Apache returns 403 for http://server/private/2201. Is there any special rule for directories named private? • What is the difference between "could not find host" and "timed out" when pinging fails?

  As the title states. I was trying to ping a bunch of servers whose existence I am not sure of. There are 10 servers in all. Two of them got ping timed out while the other eight have could not find host. The 2 timed out ones show an IP which times out too on pinging. I did a quick nslookup on these servers and they did not have any DNS entries. What is the difference between "could not find host" and "timed out" when pinging fails?

• Resolution is Being Stupid. Help me?

  I'm having trouble with a new computer I bought a few days ago. I have come to the conclusion that the resolution of the screen is too small, at the moment it is 1024x768 and I think it should be 1280x960, due to a message given at the resolution tab of the control panel. It states: (!) If your resolution is below 1280x960, some items on the screen may not fit on the screen. The computer is an Asus A54H and runs 64-bit operating system with Windows 7 Home Premium. • Need a GUI app for group policy login script

  I wrote a C# 4.0 application that works on a Windows computer but when using Group Policy to set it as a login script, it does not run. The application is being called from the same location and using rsop.msc shows that the application should be run. I see that using C# 4.0 may be a little overkill for this purpose, but it just seems wrong to write a VB6 application to do the same thing. The requirements for the application states that there need to be specific GUI elements that can't be just text on the window. I need larger fonts and color elements. Is there something more appropriate (and current) that I should be using?

  Im getting an error half way through an SQL Server 2008 r2 installation. The error states Not all privileges or groups referenced are assigned to the caller. it asks to retry or cancel. Upon trying both, the error message returns and I must cntrl-alt-delete to end the process. I have checked all permissions associated with local account, network domain account and ran installation as administrator. I have searched on the web and other people are having this problem too but I cant find a solution. so I turn to the experts, anyone encounter this error??

• Win xp reinstall now I am unable to connect to broadband what shall I select to do this?

  Hello, My hardrive was failing so I needed to reinstall win xp. I completed the reinstall and the drivers but now only the wireless connection works. The broadband states connected but does not go out to the interenet. When I click Internet Explorer it says unable to find webpage. I have tried several major sites so I know its not the site but some configuration or something I need to do on my end. When I go to the cmd prompt and renew the ip it refers to my wireless nothing about this broadband connection. What do I type/select to get this to go out to the Internet. The broadband is working for my other laptop so I know the connection is not the issue. Any help would be much appreciated thank you.

• How to prevent boot manager missing after cloning a win764 image using Ghost 2003?

  I am running ghost 2003 command -fdsp, but once we have cloned the image and restored it onto exactly the same make and model machine, we are force to run win7 setup and run a repair which fixes the boot menu, I want to prevent this requirement to fix the problem, any suggestions besides the obvious of using Windows AIK tools, new versions of ghost/clonzilla. I want to prevent the problem in the first place, it's 1 partition only, on a levano workstation m82 with UEFI and a 100mb system reserved partition. Windows Boot Manager screen and states: Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem: 1.Insert your Windows installation disc and restart your computer. 2.Choose your language settings, and then click "Next." 3.Click "Repair you computer." If you do not have this disc, contact your system administrator or computer manufacturer for assistance. Status: 0xc000000e
