• Maximize window in one display

  I'm using an NVIDIA Quadra FX 1700 card and have a dual monitor system. I want to maximize a window so that it is maximized in one monitor not across both monitors but I don't seem to have that as an option. Right now I just minimize & expand it so it fills one monitor at a time. Any suggestions? I'm using Windows XP Professional on a desktop. Maybe it's not possible since it seems that both monitors are connected to the graphics card and Windows only sees one monitor.

• ssh on Window Vista and Ubuntu 12.04

  Greeting to all. On my Fijitsu system with intel processor, I could not ssh from my Window Vista partition using PUTTY and also could not ssh from my Ubuntu 12.04 partition. I am try to ssh into a remote machine where I have an account but I always get Connection refused. But from the desktop computer in my office using the same PUTTY I could ssh to remote machine. I have tried to follow several comments but none has worked for me. Please, I need help.

• Outlook slow to open attachments

  When a colleague tries to open attachments in her email (Outlook 2003 talking to an Exchange 2007 server) they talk ages to open. The files are relatively small, all less than 1MB. We've tried creating a new Windows profile for the user and tried creating new Outlook profiles, however that hasn't made any difference. And we've tried accessing her account from someone else's PC, and the attachments open immediately there. The only thing that might provide a clue is that Process Monitor shows Outlook on her PC trying to write the file to a folder within the user's "Temporary Internet Files" folder with FAST I/O DISALLOWED errors. Can't find a lot of useful information on that message online though. What causes the FAST I/O DISALLOWED errors? And would that make opening attachments so incredibly slow that opening a < 1MB file can take a matter of minutes? UPDATE: Discovered that this isn't just an issue with Outlook. Other files being accessed over the network show the same FAST I/O DISALLOWED errors in Process Monitor. The problem is just more noticeable with Outlook, because although other applications take a while to open files it isn't a matter of minutes.

• How does one open multiple tabs in TextWrangler?

  No, I'm not bluffing. I really can't figure this out. The setup: I went to File -> Open, and then selected a directory rather than a file. As expected, a directory tree opened on the left side of my document. Hooray! I can easily view the files' structure in my Rails project. So, I make a few changes in a file, and then I click on a different file in the directory tree. My problem: TextWrangler then asks me whether I want to save my changes. Huh? I say "No", and the new document doesn't open at all. Great. I try hitting Command+N (new document). A new window opens. Ughhhh. How the heck do I open documents in a new tab? Note: I have set the "New & opened documents" behavior to "Open in the front window". This does not change the behavior described (i.e. when a directory is opened rather than a single file).

• Excel fails to open Python-generated CSV files

  I have many Python scripts that output CSV files. It is occasionally convenient to open these files in Excel. After installing OS X Mavericks, Excel no longer opens these files properly: Excel doesn't parse the files and it duplicates the rows of the file until it runs out of memory. Specifically, when Excel attempts to open the file, a prompt appears that reads: "File not loaded completely." Example of code I'm using to generate the CSV files: import csv with open('csv_test.csv', 'wb') as f: writer = csv.writer(f) writer.writerow([1,2,3]) writer.writerow([4,5,6]) Even the simple file generated by the above code fails to load properly in Excel. However, if I open the CSV file in a text editor and copy/paste the text into Excel, parse it with text to columns, and then save as CSV from Excel, then I can reopen the CSV file in Excel without issue. Do I need to pass an additional parameter in my scripts to make Excel parse the CSV files the same way it used to? Or is there some setting I can change in OS X Mavericks or Excel? Thanks.

• Office365 Exchange: Cannot open shared two calendars in Outlook

  The problem: Outlook won't open the calendars on another user's mailbox and and a room mailbox, even when users have permission. Note: This problem is affecting more than one account on more than one machine. So I have a room mailbox and a personal mailbox on Exchange, both with shared calendars. There is a security group called "Scheduling Users" that have editor rights on both of these calenders. The room mailbox was created using PowerShell, per the instructions posted online (http://help.outlook.com/140/ee441202.aspx). Sharing worked on both of these folders initially. Users can still access these folders using OWA. So on to the problem. When users try to open these calendars in Outlook they receive one of the following messages. The set of folders cannot be opened. Microsoft Exchange is not available. Either there are network problems or the Exchange server is down for maintenance. Cannot open this item. Cannot open the free/busy information. The attempt to log on to Microsoft Exchange has failed. What I have tried so far: Resetting the permissions on both of the mailboxes. I deleted the security group permissions on both mailboxes, applied the change, then waited a bit and gave the permissions back. Deleted the OST file of the shared calendar from the Outlook data directory That is all I have been able to find online. Any thoughts? I have been going back and forth with the Office365 support folks for a while and they seem stumped too.

• Mouse and keyboard focus problem

  I have two Chrome windows side by side. I click a link in window#1, ok. Now I want to switch to window#2 and click anywhere in the window. Noting happens. Sometimes the cursor switch to make-bigger-window style. If I click in the top part of current window. And then in the top part of next window I can switch focus so the other window works. Another problem is that the keyboard focus can get stuck in one window. I can click on things in one window but when using the keyboard it will change the first window. Only by closing the window that has the focus, it will release keyboard. What is this madness? Another problem not related is that sometimes I get logged out. Just like that.

  Colleagues, I have need to run a script/program on certain basic OS level events. In particular when a file in Windows is opened. The open may be read-only or to edit, and may be initiated by a number of means, either from windows explorer (open or ), be selected from a viewing or editing application from the native file chooser, or drag-n-drop into an editing or viewing application. Further, i need the trigger to "hold" the event from completing the action until the runtime on the program has completed. The event handler program may return a pass state, or fail state. If fail state has been returned, then the event must disallow the initially requested action. Lastly, I need to add to the file in question a property or attribute that will contain metadata that will be used by the above event trigger handler program to make a determination as to the pass/fail condition that will ultimately determine if the user is permitted to open the file. • WPF: Focus in a Window and UserControl

  I'm trying to get a UserControl to tab properly and am baffled. The logical tree looks like this. |-Window -Grid -TabControl -TabItem -StackPanel -MyUserControl |-StackPanel -GroupBox -Grid -ComboBox -Textbox1 -Textbox2 Everything works fine, except when the visibility converter for the ComboBox returns Visibility.Collapsed (don't allow user to change database mode), then when textbox1 is selected, instead of being able to tab through the controls in the UserControl, the focus shifts to a button declared at the bottom of the window. Nothing else apart from the controls displayed has TabIndex or FocusManager properties set. I'm banging my head against a brick wall and I must be missing something. • Is it possible to run dhcpd3 as non-root user in a chroot jail?

• Windows 7 explorer always crashes, opens small "Personalized Settings" window

  My Windows 7 desktop PC, built by me, started acting very weird in the last couple of days. I use it quite often, about half of the time through TeamViewer. Explorer would crash and restart randomly, almost always through TeamViewer. This made me suspect that TeamViewer was the problem but I have reproduced it with and without TeamViewer several times. The only way I can seem to get the problem not to occur is by booting into Safe Mode. I have used CCleaner and Malwarebytes to make sure it wasn't a registry error or malware causing the problem, and I have tried the fix in the seemly related issue here as well every other fix I have found online including removing security updates KB980408 and KB2926765 as well as using "sfc /scannow" and a bunch of other things I can't remember. More recently when I try to start explorer it is popping up a small window that says "Personalized Settings" on the top, but is completely empty and crashes instantly. The only way I can get it to disappear is to kill the explorer.exe process. I wish I could take a screenshot but I can't seem to open paint or even find the exe. I have tried restarting it, I have tried starting it while the personalized settings window was open. I have come up with two lists of processes the first is the list of active processes when I boot into safe mode and explorer seems to work fine. The second is the list of processes that I can narrow it down to in normal boot and still replicate the problem. There is one process that I can't seem to close. NisSrv.exe which is describes as "Microsoft Network Realtime Inspection Service". When I try to close the process NisSrv.exe it says "The operation could not be completed. Access is denied." When I try to close the related service it gives the same message. Event filter with query "SELECT * FROM __InstanceModificationEvent WITHIN 60 WHERE TargetInstance ISA "Win32_Processor" AND TargetInstance.LoadPercentage > 99" could not be reactivated in namespace "//./root/CIMV2" because of error 0x80041003. Events cannot be delivered through this filter until the problem is corrected. My explorer tab in Autoruns seen below along with the error when I try to uncheck something. I should add that I seem to be able to disable shell extensions with ShellExView but I still can't get explorer to start correctly. • Active Directory using Samba/Open LDAP for user accounts

  I know this is the wrong way round... but Is it possible to use AD in front of Samba for our PC clients, so that the user accounts are in Samba/Open LDAP. Managing our fleet of Windows PC's is becoming more and more difficult with just Samba v3 - until Samba v4 comes along, it would be great if we could leverage Active Directory, but have the accounts stored in Samba/Open LDAP. Windows PC's are a minority in our organisation & Samaba/Open LDAP are used for just about every service (Zimbra/RADIUS/Intranet/SAN/Printing/...) so it will have to remain the definitive account source. Anyway, it probably can't be done, but I thought I would ask for ideas anyway.

• Explorer and open file dialog not responding (Vista)

  Any explorer window opened for the first time on my machine causes the explorer window to display the folders tree and folder path in the address bar immediately but the file/folder list pane is blank and the window displays 'Not Responding' in the title bar, this hangs for up to a minute or more. Any file dialog displays 'Not Responding' in the title bar. The files list is eventually displayed after a few seconds or more. Steps to repro: Close all open instances of explorer Windows Key | Run | [enter a folder path such as 'c:\temp'] Or within any app: use a file open / save dialog Once there is at least one open instance of explorer the performance is still fairly poor but not nearly so bad and file lists are displayed in a timely fashion. What I've tried: Cleaned up registry with CCleaner tool, and uninstalled all other unused software Checked nothing unwanted running at startup with Autoruns Removed any ISO burner/recorder/mount software Still to try Get latest version of everything - especially stuff with shell extension behaviour such as TortoiseSVN Anyone have any other suggestions? Update I'm wondering if this is related, I'll try the hotfix when I get home and report back: KB972685 - FIX:Explorer.exe hangs when using a shell extension written using MFC Update 2 Before I got a chance to try the hotfix it seems one of the above actions fixed this for me; either the removal of IsoRecorder or TortoiseHg (which I was no longer using anyway).   When using the windows 7 explorer with the preview pane open you get a little preview of a file when you click on it. This includes Word and Excel spreadsheets etc. My problem is if the Word doc is password protected clicking on it in explorer automatically asks for the password to display its preview. It does this if you single or double clicking on it. You then get an empty Word instance running (which allows it to display the preview) and another instance of Word with your actual file and you're asked for the password twice in total. This is annoying and untidy. Is there a way of stopping the preview pane from wanting to display password protected documents and thus not asking for the password to display a preview?

• OS X random, jumpy dragging behavior

  This problem has been going on since I got 10.7, and is persisting or even getting worse since I updated to Mavricks. The best way to describe it is thru an example- Let's say I'm working in Safari. Everything is working fine. Then, I'll switch to another app by clicking on it's window, for example, I'll click on Messages to shoot back a reply. When I click back to Safari, keyboard and mouse inputs don't work! The only way I can regain control of the app (Safari) is by clicking on the apps top bar, which then causes the app to jump left or right. If I'm in Messages and I switch back to Safari by clicking said top bar, it works fine. Same with switching back and forth using command-tab. I've narrowed the problem down to this - the first app (Safari, in this example) is, for some reason, deciding that I'm in the process of dragging the window around. This could be just an oddly persistent glitch in my system, but has anyone else seen this before? Perhaps a misplaced default write... somewhere along the line? • Cannot open the device or file specified for office files

  Recently I've noticed on couple of computers that when users try to open Office files or links (to server path) to office files they get this error "Windows cannot access the specified device path or file", but the files itself open up without problems. This happened on 4 Windows XP computers already with Office 2003 installed. One one computer it was XLSX file being opened and every time user executed it, it opened up, but the error pops out. On the other hand when I open it directly from Office it works fine, without error. On another 3 computers it was after user pressed on the link to Access DB and it error out, but Access began MSI configuration (since it was first time user logged in to his computer) and in the end it opened up properly. After closing access and doing it again problem disappeared. Some faulty patch ? Eset Smart Security 4 is installed.

• Keyboard Navigation of File Open Dialog in Windows 7

  In Windows XP standard File - Open dialog, the top has a "Look In" box. I can press Alt+I to drop down a tree of the disks folders and easily navigate to other folders or network shares. In Windows 7, I can't seem to navigate the File - Open dialog as easily. The best I've been able to muster is to tab 5 times (in Excel 2007, but I assume it's a windows standard), then use arrow keys or use Alt+arrow keys like a browser to get around. It's simply not as good because I can't see the whole tree at once. Is there a way to see the whole folder tree?   Hi all; Apologies if this has been discussed previously... I did a stack overflow and google search but probably didn't use the right keywords. Anyway, is there an easy way to determine what files are open on Mac OS X? I had an issue in which I could not unmount a firewire HD until I closed all running apps. Turns out keychain access had a reference to a file on the HD, but it begged the question: how to find out what files are open and what app (or apps) has the file open? Thanks in advance and again apologies if this has been covered previously. Doug.

• Visual Studio 2005 Open Project Dialog Slow as Molasses

  Hi, Whenever I try to open a project in Visual Studio 2005 (Windows XP), my open project dialog become slow as molasses - navigating down one level of folders typically takes almost 60 seconds. Finding the project and opening it can take up 4-5 minutes, which is just ridiculous. I've checked the open project dialogs of other programs - only VS2005 is acting this way. What could be causing this problem and how do I go about solving it (apart from reinstalling VS2005 / windows) (Edit: Even VS2008 on the same machine does not have this problem. I don't know what's wrong.) Thanks!

• Third party biometric software.

  Most of us with fingerprint readers and such devices probably use the software provided by the vendor, to enable biometric OS login or single sign-on functionality. However, I've recently wondered if there is any third-party software that will do the same thing? This would be similar to how you don't need the manufacturer's software to use a scanner, printer, or webcam - you just use their drivers and your choice of software. Is there anything like this for fingerprint readers or other biometric devices? Free or Open Source projects are preferred, but I'd be interested in learning about any existing solutions regardless. I personally am particularly interested in Windows-compatible software, but I'll leave the query open for any OS.
