• Advice on Minimizing Stored Procedure Parameters

  Hi Guys, I have an ASP.NET MVC Web Application that interacts with a SQL Server 2008 database via Entity Framework 4.0. On a particular page, i call a stored procedure in order to pull back some results based on selections on the UI. Now, the UI has around 20 different input selections, ranging from a textbox, dropdown list, checkboxes, etc. Each of those inputs are "grouped" into logical sections. Example: Search box : "Foo" Checkbox A1: ticked, Checkbox A2: unticked Dropdown A: option 3 selected Checkbox B1: ticked, Checkbox B2: ticked, Checkbox B3: unticked So i need to call the SPROC like this: exec SearchPage_FindResults @SearchQuery = 'Foo', @IncludeA1 = 1, @IncludeA2 = 0, @DropDownSelection = 3, @IncludeB1 = 1, @IncludeB2 = 1, @IncludeB3 = 0 The UI is not too important to this question - just wanted to give some perspective. Essentially, i'm pulling back results for a search query, filtering these results based on a bunch of (optional) selections a user can filter on. Now, My questions/queries: What's the best way to pass these parameters to the stored procedure? Are there any tricks/new ways (e.g SQL Server 2008) to do this? Special "table" parameters/arrays - can we pass through User-Defined-Types? Keep in mind im using Entity Framework 4.0 - but could always use classic ADO.NET for this if required. What about XML? What are the serialization/de-serialization costs here? Is it worth it? How about a parameter for each logical section? Comma-seperated perhaps? Just thinking out loud. This page is particulary important from a user point of view, and needs to perform really well. The stored procedure is already heavy in logic, so i want to minimize the performance implications - so keep that in mind. With that said - what is the best approach here?

• Converting a soap message to a document using wssj

  I have been supplied with a jar file that should enable me to connect to a 3rd party system. When I run the necessary class I get an error which states that the namespace for the prefix "SOAPENV" has not been declared. Using jad I have decompiled the class files to try suss out what is going on and the error seems to occur when a soap message is being converted to a document. Unfortunately I don't know much about wssj. Can anyone suggest what the problem might be? I'm wondering if it's an incompatibility issue as it's not a recently created jar file and the decompiled code looks different to all the examples I can find. For example, in this section the examples have addNamesSpaceDeclaration rather than addAttribute...   Using Perl's XML::LibXSLT necessitates that I use XSLT 1.0, which means that I am stuck without XSLT 2.0 features. Is there a way that I can still pad text cleanly in a plain-text output from my processing? What I want is: <values> <headers> <header>Header 1</header> <header>Header 2</header> </headers> <value> <one>First value 1</one> <two>First value 2</two> </value> <value> <one>Second value 1</one> <two>Second value 2</two> </value> .... <value> <one>Nth value 1</one> <two>Nth value 2</two> </value> </values> To become Header 1 Header 2 First value 1 First value 2 Second value 1 Second value 2 .... Nth value 1 Nth value 2 I realize that XSLT isn't necessarily ideally suited for this type of formatting, but the data will likely also be formatted in other ways.

• when to use Hibernate vs. Simple ResultSets for small application

  I just started working on upgrading a small component in a distributed java application. The main application is a rather complicated applet/servlet combo running on JBoss and it extensively uses Hibernate for its DataAccess. The component i am working on however is very a very straightforward data importing service. Basically the workflow is Listen for a network event Parse the data packet, extract a set of identifiers Map the identifier set to a primary key in our database Parse the rest of the packet and insert items in a related table using the foreign key found in step 3 Repeat in the previous version of this component it used a hibernate based DAL, that is no longer usable for a variety of reasons (in particular it is EOL), so I am in charge of replacing the Data Access layer for this component. So on the one hand I think i should use Hibernate because that's what the rest of the application does, but on the other i think i should just use regular java.sql.* classes because my requirements are really straightforward and aren't expected to change any time soon. So my question is (and i understand it is subjective) at what point do you think that the added complexity of using an ORM tool (in terms of configuration, dependencies...) is worth it? UPDATE due to the way the DataAccesLayer for the main application was written (weird dependencies) i cannot easily use it, i would have to implement it myself.

  I am having some issues with code that is returning a pointer to a struct declared inside a class. I am using Microsoft Visual Studio and the compiler tells me that "Listnode" is unidentified. • Error with threads during automatic testing on TeamCity 5

  Hello, I'm having some problems executing the tests of the application I'm developing. All the tests execute normally with ReSharper and in NCover. However, the execution of one of these tests in TeamCity is generating an error. This test initializes two objects, the object under test and a simulator of a real object. Both objects will communicate throug a serial link in a representation of the real scenario. ObjectSimulator r_simulator = new ObjectSimulator(...); ObjectDriver r_driver = new ObjectDriver(...); Assert.IsTrue(r_driver.Connect() == ErrorCode.Success); The simulator just do the following in the constructor public class ObjectSimulator { ... public ObjectSimulator() { // serial port configuration m_port = new SerialPort(); m_port.DataReceived += DataReceivedEvent; } ... } The main object has two threads. The main thread of the application and a timer to refresh a watchdog timer in the real object. public ErrorCode Connect() { ... StartSynchroTimer(); Thread.Sleep(4); // to check if the timer is working properly ... } The problem is comming from the Thread.Sleep() call, as when I remove it everything works. It seems like the ObjectSimulator also sleeps and doesn't receive the DataReceived event. How can I resolve this issue?

• How to secure connection strings in VS?

  I see several others have posted this question, however, none of the solutions I've tried have fixed this yet. I have a 32-bit XP running VS 2008 and I am trying to encrypt my connection string in my web.config file. But I am getting the error: The configuration section '...' was not found. Failed! The command I give it: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 9.0\VCAspnet_regiis.exe -pe "system.we b/AdventureWorksConnectionString2" -app "/Documents and Settings/Admin/My Docume nts/Visual Studio 2008/Projects/AddFileToSQL2" Also, how does -app map virtual directory? In other words the path above is the directory right below c:. Is this the correct path to use? And AddFileToSQL2 is the name of my project, although it is part of the AddFileToSQL solution. I have this folder web shared with all of the permissions. • ASP.NET: how can I compile in DEBUG mode?

  AFAIK, usual ASP.NET web site/web application switched on into DEBUG mode when web/app-config setting "compilation" has debug="false". But I don't clearly understand how it works. Let's consider example: I have <compilation debug="true" />. I've added the following line into "Page_Load" method: System.Diagnostics.Debug.WriteLine("Page_Load"); When I launched web-site in 'debug' mode (using F5 button) It put me 'Page_Load' into output window. Everything is ok so far. When I change application compilation mode into non-debug: Will it recompile everything for 'non-debug' mode? Is this enough to go into "production" environment with this change only? I guess, it should be enough for web-site that doesn't use other project. Otherwise, I would better switch whole configuration into "Release" mode. In this case EACH project will be recompiled in "Release" mode. Am I right? Could you please point me if something is wrong here? Thanks a lot!

• my web service works locally but, not when it is deployed

  When I deploy my web service, I get the following error: There is no build provider registered for the extension '.svc'. You can register one in the section in machine.config or web.config. Make sure is has a BuildProviderAppliesToAttribute attribute which includes the value 'Web' or 'All'. I found one thread (http://forums.asp.net/t/1228638.aspx) that suggested a solution but, I can not get it to work. If I make the changes to my web config file as suggested in the thread, I then get a configuration error. One odd thing is that, if I check the machine.config file on my machine, located at C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\CONFIG\machine.config, I don't see any of the config settings described in the thread. As a matter of fact, there is no mention of "compilation" or "buildProviders" at all. The on-line documents I have found regarding BuildProviderAppliesToAttribute have not been of any help. • XPath Query - Select relative top level nodes

  I'm trying to iterate over some elements in an XML document that may be nested, but as I iterate over them I may be removing some from the tree. I'm thinking the best way is to do this recursively, so I'm trying to come up with an XPath Query that will select all the top-level nodes relative to the current node. //foo[not(ancestor::foo)] works great at the document level, but I'm trying to figure out how to do this from a relative query. <foo id="1"> <foo id="2" /> <foo id="3"> <foo id="4"> <bar> <foo id="5"> <foo id="6" /> </foo> <foo id="7" /> </bar> </foo> </foo> </foo> If the current node is foo#3, I only want to select foo#4. When the current node is foo#4, I only want to select foo#5 and foo#7. I think I'm trying to select any descendant foo nodes of the current node, but without any ancestor foo nodes between the current node and the node I'm selecting. My conundrum is if we're already inside a foo node, not(ancestor::foo) doesn't help.

• Minimizing server load in case of many XMLHttpRequest calls

  I am making a website where users are to like some articles. Whenever the like button is clicked I am sending a XMLHttpRequest to the server to run a file called like_clicked.php along with the get data of article id and user id. This file takes article id and user id and updates the sql database and also adds a node in an xml file related to the user. This is the first time I am doing something for mass usage. I am worried about the server load when too many users call the like_clicked.php file. Please help me, if this method is ok. I am also thinking of an alternative in case the above method fails. I am thinking of making many like_clicked files (namely like_clicked1.php, like_clicked2.php ... ) to minimize load on a single i-node. Is there a method to detect that it is better to call the next like_clicked file. Here we would need to detect how many calls per unit time are coming for the particular file. How do we handle this? • Convert asp.net application to windows forms app

  I have written and deployed an ASP.NET application that is pretty complex. It uses XSL transformations to create web forms for a large variety of data objects. The data comes from the database as XML via a web service. Now, I need to create a Windows desktop application that will provide a small subset of the web applications functionality to a user who may not have access to the web (working in remote areas). I will provide the data syncing using the MS Sync Framework. And I will have the desktop use a local data store. I would like to use the same xslt files in the desktop app that I use in the web app for the form creation so that, if changes are made, the desktop app can update itself when it connects and syncs its data. But, I am wondering how to replicate the asp.net codebehind logic of my web app in the windows forms. If I use a browser control to render the XSLTransformation result, then how could I handle click events, etc, in the form? Also, can I launch other windows as "dialog boxes" from my windows forms (I do this in my web app using RadControls functionality)? Thanks for any advice you can give.

• Set .aspx page title to that of an Eval

  I am trying to use an <%# Eval("name") %> to be the title of my page. I can't seem to figure out any solutions online. I have tried the other StackOverflow question but that did now work either. The page is a bio.aspx and on the site it is displayed as bio.aspx?id=123 so the page title needs to vary depending on the ID. I figured I could just use the Eval("name") but no luck yet. I currently am using JavaScript: window.onload = function() { document.title = '<%# Eval("name") %> | Title Line'; } This works, but it still leaves the title tags empty, and it's kind of spammy. • change postgres date format

  Is there a way to change the default format of a date in Postgres? Normally when I query a Postgres database, dates come out as yyyy-mm-dd hh:mm:ss+tz, like 2011-02-21 11:30:00-05. But one particular program the dates come out yyyy-mm-dd hh:mm:ss.s, that is, there is no time zone and it shows tenths of a second. Apparently something is changing the default date format, but I don't know what or where. I don't think it's a server-side configuration parameter, because I can access the same database with a different program and I get the format with the timezone. I care because it appears to be ignoring my "set timezone" calls in addition to changing the format. All times come out EST. Additional info: If I write "select somedate from sometable" I get the "no timezone" format. But if I write "select to_char(somedate::timestamptz, 'yyyy-mm-dd hh24:mi:ss-tz')" then timezones work as I would expect. This really sounds to me like something is setting all timestamps to implicitly be "to_char(date::timestamp, 'yyyy-mm-dd hh24:mi:ss.m')". But I can't find anything in the documentation about how I would do this if I wanted to, nor can I find anything in the code that appears to do this. Though as I don't know what to look for, that doesn't prove much.

I also want to make it dynamic so that if I add another item in siteMenu, it would update the xslt appropriately.

• Flex Sprite xy Coordinates

  Hi, I have a drawing that looks more or less like the attached image. image The orange square is the currently selected selected sprite. The sprites are all draws from coordinates that i receive from XML. var sprObject:Sprite = new Sprite(); sprObject.graphics.beginFill(itemList.c.toString()); sprObject.name = strName; sprObject.graphics.moveTo(iX, iY); sprObject.graphics.lineTo(iX2, iY2); sprObject.graphics.lineTo(iX3, iY3); sprObject.graphics.lineTo(iX4, iY4); sprObject.graphics.lineTo(iX, iX); sprObject.graphics.endFill(); mainUI.addChild(sprObject); // mainUI is a mx:UIComponent g_Sprite.push(sprObject); // array of sprites. What I want to do is the following. If I'm currently on the orange square and I use my keyboard direction buttons (up/down/left/right). I want to deselect the current sprite and select the next sprite in the appropriate direction. The problem I'm having is that I cannot get the x and y coordinates of the drawn sprites. If I look in the array, the x and y coordinates of the sprites are all 0. If I can retrieve that I can write an algorithm to determine the next sprite to select. Any help would be appreciated.

• How often should network traffic/collisions cause SNMP Sets to fail?

  My team has a situation where an SNMP SET will fail once every two weeks or so. Since this set happens automatically, we don't necessarily notice it immediately when it fails, and this can result in an inconsistent configuration and associated wailing and gnashing of teeth. The plan is to fix this by having our software automatically retry the SET when it fails. The problem is, we aren't sure why the failure is happening. My (extremely limited) knowledge of SNMP isn't particularly helpful in diagnosing this problem, so I thought I'd ask StackOverflow for some advice. We think that every so often a spike in network traffic will cause the SET to fail. Since SNMP uses UDP for communication, I would think it would be relatively easy for a command to be drowned out if traffic was high for a short period of time. However, I have no idea how common this is. We have a small network with a single cisco router and there are less than a dozen SNMP controlled devices on that network. In addition to the SNMP traffic, there are some status web pages being loaded from the various devices. In case it makes a difference, I believe we are using the AdventNet SNMP API version 4.0.4 for Java. Does it sound reasonable that there will be some SET commands dropped occasionally, or should we be looking for other causes?

• Looking for a good C++/.net book

  I have recently started to feel that I need to greatly improve my C++ skills especially in the realm of .net. I graduated from a good four year university with a degree in computer science about 9 months ago and I have since been doing full time contract work for a small software company in my local area. Most of my work has been done using Java/lisp/cocoa/XML and before that most of my programming in my senior year was in java/C#. I did a decent amount of C++ in my Sophomore year and in my free time before that but I feel that my general knowledge of C++/.net is very lacking for the opportunities that are now coming my way. Can anyone recommend a good book that could help me get up too speed? I feel I do not need a very basic introduction to C++ but something that covers the fundamentals of .net would be good for me. So basically what I need is a book or books that would be good for a .net novice and a C++ developer who is just beyond novice. Also, a book that would help bein an interview by giving me a conversional understanding of C++ would be great. Thanks a lot!.
