• Tools to backup an external hard disk

  Hey people, What's the best method to take an exact copy of my external hard disk? A guru suggested rsync, but I was wondering if there's an easier alternative. I do remember reading somewhere that Acronis also does this. Was looking for your advice on the best option. I'm running Windows. Essentially i have an external HDD which has a lot of stuff synchronized across various pcs. I wish to take a backup of this external Hard disk (ext.HDDs aren't entirely reliable so want to keep a backup of my ext.HDD). Cheers. K

• PHP DL Function

  Is allowing dynamic extension loading dangerous for some reason? I ask because I need it to include the pecl oauth.so extension to make the Google Adwords PHP SDK work using dl(). I've tried all other alternatives but just can't get it to work: http://php.net/manual/en/function.dl.php enable_dl is set to off by default inside my php.ini, I enabled it, restarted apache and it works. If it's safe to use why is it disabled by default? I'm the only user with access to the server and it will be hosting a web application. Any advice would be helpful!

• Replacing a W2K3 Domain Controller - what do I need to know?

  I have a network of around 70 machines, currently with two DCs both running Windows Server 2003 (DC0 & DC1). DC0 is a five year old Poweredge 1850 and has recently become increasingly flakey, and in the past fortnight has fallen over twice. I want to replace this machine, but I'm cautious as there is huge scope for this sort of thing to go wrong. The way I imagine doing this is building a new machine then doing a DCPROMO and running three domain controllers for a month or so until I'm happy that everything is working as it should be before retiring the old machine. Particular areas of concern are the replication of roles from the current controllers (GP settings for instance) and the ramifications of switching off the machine that has, up until now, been the 'primary'. If there are compelling reasons to use Server 2008 I'm willing to do so, however I don't know if this would cause problems with my exisiting 2003 machines. Any advice on best practice or previous experiences would be most welcome.

• How to set up port forwarding and firewall settings for torrents using Transmsission on Mac OSX 10.5

  I have picked up bits of advice here and there on the internet and got someway through this tortuous exercise (after it took 18 hours to download the first torrent I tried yesterday - magnet-link for a film). Where I have got stuck is with configuring the firewall on the Netgear Router but I am not sure if I have caused the problem myself by something else I have done configuring the Mac System Preferences for Security or Networking. I have been following the sections of these instructions that seem to apply, although they are written for a different OSX version (don't know which one, but the screen shots do not match what I see) and I am not wanting to set up my Mac as a server and attending to the parts that apply to port forwarding for Netgear rather than LinkSys: http://homepage.mac.com/car1son/static_port_fwd_intro.html I have been trying to follow these instructions: Instructions for DG834, DG834G, DG824M, FR114W, FM114P, FR114P, FR328S, FVL328, FVS328, FVS338, FVX538, FWAG114, FWG114P, or FVS318v3 These routers do port forwarding by assigning port numbers to a "service" associated with the application you want to run. "Rules" are set for particular services. Rules block or allow access, based on various conditions such as the time of day and the name of the service. To Create a New Inbound or Outbound Rule 1. Submit the router's address in an Internet browser. (The default is 192.168.0.1). 2. Enter the router's username and password. 3. From the main menu, click Security > Rules. 4. Click Add for inbound or outbound traffic, as appropriate to the application you are planning to run. 5. Select the Service. The services the router knows about are listed in the drop down. If the service you want is not listed, add it as described in the next section. 6. Select the Action, for example ALLOW always. 7. For Send to LAN Server, enter the IP address of the local server. Note that this is also the IP address the computers on your LAN will access. 8. For WAN User choose Any, or limit access to particular IP addresses. 9. For Log selection it is reasonable to turn logs on, especially at the beginning when you are unsure of the result of the changes you are making. Later, you may want to set logs to "Never" for performance reasons. 10. Click Apply. As noted in user manual for some models: * Consider using the Dynamic DNS feature on the Advanced menu, so that external users can find your network when the DHCP lease is renewed by your ISP. * If your own LAN server uses DHCP, and your IPs change on rebooting, consider using the Reserved IP Address feature in the LAN IP menu. To Add a Service for These Routers 1. Click Security > Services > Add Custom Service. 2. Enter any name you choose for the service. 3. Select whether the service is to use TCP or UDP. If you are unsure, select both. 4. Enter the lowest port number used by the service. 5. Enter the highest port number used. If the service uses only one port number, enter the same number. 6. Click Apply. There is no "Security - Rules" submenu in the Netgear page, so I have been trying to access "Security - Firewall Rules". I can access everthing else in the Netgear settings as Admin but I cannot get the "Firewall Rules" section to open up. (I am not 100% sure I will know exactly what to do if and when I do get it opened up!) I haven't managed to find though searching the internet any instructions that would seem to apply specifically to what I am trying to achieve, so would be very grateful if someone could either point me in the right direction or give me some advice directly. • unwanted password prompt pops up on web server?

  my web server randomly asks for a password as though basic authentication is turned on. It's an IIS 7 web server and you have to specifically install basic authentication in the roles section. It isn't installed. The message that pops up is "Warning: This server is requesting that your username and password be sent in an insecure manner (basic authentication without a secure connection)" I cannot reproduce the problem but a number of customers have reported the problem and it only seems to appear to a small number of customers. It pops up when they visit the homepage, nothing is generated by the IIS logs to indicate a password box is being served (e.g. no 401 errors etc) Can anyone offer any advice? Thanks

• Ho do you view all your monitoring software

  In my office I have all our monitoring tools setup and working great, but I dont have an easy way to view them. I have a large TV in my office plugged into an old PC that has my nagios status page always showing. If I need to change anything on that computer I use Synergy to access the computer from my desktop. We are thinking about adding another TV and I want some suggestions on setting it all up. We are a 99.99% Windows shop. What do you use to run all the TV's in your helpdesk? Synergy works for me, but what if one of the other admins want to change the screen? Is there any easy way that any of us (currently 4 people) can change the screen from our desktops? (Remote desktop doesn't work because it locks the console which is the output to the TVs.) Any advice would help, Thanks.

• Windows Vista stuck on crcdisk.sys

  Hello everyone, I'm here with some Vista-trouble. After a cigarette-break I returned to my desk to find my PC with a black screen, and after failing to wake it up did a forced restart. I haven't been installing any hardware or software for quite a while. Ever since, Vista gets stuck on the animated 'Microsoft Corporation' progress bar with the animation still running and no hard disk activity. With an F8 and safe-mode + prompt I saw that the boot gets stuck at crcdisk.sys. I'm running Vista64 SP1. What could the problem be? Any advice?

• Postfix smtp error 450 (failed to add recipient)

  I have debian server with postfix and roundcube. After an attack we are on 2 blacklists, but I don't think that this is the main problem. I can't send mail to any address. I tried to find the cause...I checked var/spool/postfix/etc/resolv.conf and resolv.etc and they're the same with this content: nameserver 127.0.0.1 nameserver localhost In var/log/mail.err I found: cyrus/imap[25452]: DBERROR: opening /var/lib/cyrus/user/m/[email protected]: cyrusdb error cyrus/imap[25452]: DBERROR: skiplist recovery /var/lib/cyrus/user/m/[email protected]: ADD at 1FC0 exists When I try to send email from roundcube, I get the message from title. When I send it within opera or any other mail client, It gives nothing, but email is'nt sended. Thank you for any advice.

• solaris + dladm + what is unknown state and how to bring it to up?

  I installed Solaris 10 on my netra machine from dladm show-dev I can see which interface are down or up all interfaces are connected to the Cisco switch , and all leds are light's on all LAN cards but I not understand why all interfaces except e1000g0 are in unknown ? • Using IIS7 as a reverse proxy

  Hi All, My question is pretty much identical to the question listed but they did not get an answer as they ended up using Linux as the reverse proxy. http://serverfault.com/questions/55309/using-iis7-as-a-reverse-proxy I need to have IIS the main site and linux (Apache) being the proxied site(s). so I have site1.com (IIS7) site2.com (Linux Apache) they have subdomains of sub1.site1.com sub2.site1.com sub3.site2.com I want all traffic to go to site1.com and to say anything that is site2.com should be proxied to linux box on internal network, (believe ARR can do this but not sure how). I can not have it running as Apache doing the proxying as I need IIS exposed directly. any and all advice would be great. Thanks

• X11Forwarding on MacOSX (Leopard/Snow Leopard)

  Hi, I have some remote boxes, which are a bunch of Mac Mini's. I access them now through SSH, and it fits my needs to do the maintenance. In the past, I used X11Forwarding with Linux boxes, when I was still using Debian myself, and I was able to run a specific application as if it was natively present (Firefox). I haven't succeeded to do this yet, but I assume because of the BSD underneath the fancy Apple GUI should be able to do such a task similar. I am aware of the remote administration, but I rather keep access limited to SSH on these boxes for inbound connections. Background information about the why's, tips, advice and comments are all helpful! Thanks!

  Following I will ask a few specific questions but I will set the stage first. My goal is to monitor Applications in a very odd place - between the OS and a Hypervisor. If you have comments about this probably unachievable goal please do educate me. One good advice or link can save me days of work. Now to my current attempt. I installed on WinXP a VirtualBox (being open-source) and got a guest OS of latest Ubuntu running within. Where should I go next? • Networking not working in Windows 7 - "The account specified for this service is different from the account specified for other services"

  I have a homebuilt computer with a GA-Z68MA-D2H-B3 motherboard with a Realtek RTL8111E LAN chip. Ethernet was working fine in Windows 7 until I reinstalled this OS, but now it's stopped, while still working in other OSes. I've tried reinstalling drivers from both the Gigabyte and Realtek sites to no avail; I've also plugged in and installed an Asus USB-N13 wifi dongle and this doesn't work oddly. How can I diagnose and fix this issue? In 'Network and Sharing Center' says "The account specified for this service is different from the account specified for other services running in the same process" under the heading 'Unknown'. Following the advice at http://www.sevenforums.com/network-sharing/130159-dependency-service-group-failed-start.html#post1122627 I've gone to 'Control Panel= Admin Tools= Services' and ensured the services listed at that URL are started (one - IIRC 'Come+ Event System' refused to start as user 'Local services' so I've had to set it to log on with the 'Local system account'... I suspect this may be part of the problem).

• How to setup a user account for a web application

  Hi, What are the main guidelines to setting up a user account on a Linux machine for a web app? In my case it is a Rails application that does file management. First thing I can think of is to limit access rights to only the directories it needs. But how exactly should I go about this? Setup rights through a user group or a through the user's ownership of those directories. I have very little experience in user rights management. What else do I need to consider? I've heard of ACL's and SELinux, do I need to look into any of these to guaranty decent security for my simple web app? Any advice about this and anything not mentioned welcomed, Thanks, Max. • IIS6 Permissions

  We have a set of IIS6 Jakarta/ASP.NET applications (implemented as virtual directories) on a machine without a domain. The directories all exist under the default website. We need to setup the permissions so that certain users can access only specific applications yet others users can access several of the applications. The way it's been setup previously has been to explicitly deny access to the users for every application except the ones that they are allowed to see. The problem is that the list of applications changes fairly often (for demos etc) and it's been known for the developers to forget to deny the old users access to the new applications which leads to security problems. This is all quite unmaintainable. Does anybody have any advice on this? Surely I can't be the only person to find this all a bit of a mess? Thanks

• Cloning hard drive -- data, operating system settings, everything

  I am using Windows XP. My hard drive (Seagate 160gig Barracuda) is about to fail. Its already developed bad sectors and it seems to get worse everyday. Data transfer mode is down to PIO mode 2, chkdsk runs every now and then, registry and important windows files get corrupted and I spend 30-60 minutes running chkdsk /f /r from the recovery console. I've got a replacement (Seagate 5000gig Barracuda) and now i want to transfer each and every thing on to the new drive. I don't want to go through windows and software installation, I spent ages getting all those software installed and configured on that hard drive. Need advice: whats the best way to transfer everything onto the new drive so that it behaves just like the old one. And are there any "gotchas".

• Strange DNS problem [seems to be IPv6 issue]

  Hi, I'm experiencing strange problems with my Kubuntu 9.10 when doing DNS requests from various applications. The requests are extremely slow, so loading any pages in Firefox or Konqueror, doing package installations in Kpackagemanager and other apps is really painful, while for example Opera doesnt have any problems, and ping is normally fast as well for DNS pings. I checked the proxy settings of both the used applications as well as of the general system and there are none, so to me it doesn't seem as there was something inbetween.. Does anybody have an idea on what to check for possible problem sources or how to solve this ? I'm behind a DSL home router which does the DHCP (and works well with my other computer). Any kind of advice would be really helpful. Edit: It seems to be some kind of IPv6 problem, as I could get it to work by disabling IPv6 explicitly in Firefox. Is there a general solution to this ?

• How to clone and deploy multiple machines?

  Hi, See what I wanna do is basically make bootable clones or disc images or whatever(let's call it "stuff" for now ) and store many of them in a single big HDD. Then, I wanna use that big HDD and the "stuff" in it to be able to deploy new machines without the hassle of reinstalling Windows and whatnot(i.e. I do not want to restore nor simply clone a same machine, I literally want to use clones to save time during machine set up). Obviously I'd deploy the "stuff" onto an HDD going into a machine that I know the hardware of to avoid driver issues and whatnot. I alos have enough Windows keys to deal with the multiple activations. I tried using Acronis True Image but it doesn't seem to do what I want(unless idk how to use it properly). Any advice is welcome thanks :)

  Received a message from Google Webmaster Tools: Over the last 24 hours, Googlebot encountered 2 errors while attempting to retrieve DNS information for your site. The overall error rate for DNS queries for your site is 40.0%. You can see more details about these errors in Webmaster Tools. Recommended action Contacted HostPapa and they deny that there is any issue with the site / server!!! Support in terms of what I can do to actually resolve this issue is non-existent!!!! The site is currently online. And I don't know much about DNS... so any advice about what I can do to resolve this problem would be much appreciated.

  I am trying to see if OpenAFS fits my needs as a distributed filesystem and is a bit stuck. There are docs but they're all quite hard to understand, so asking for some expert advice here. My questions: which version to install? I need windows client support so I need 1.5 - right? But it is not stable.. Or is it? And don't see any pre-built rpms for it, so compiling from sources? tried to compile and it worked but it created a non-"mp" kernel module while my kernel needs an mp one - how to workaround that? do I really need a new fresh partition to start with or I can re-use an existing one and just make it available via afp? any nice HOWTOs around?

• Windows host MIA on network

  I've had a machine effectively disappear off my home office network. 192.168.1.100 - Windows 7 laptop (on domain) - problem machine 192.168.1.42 - Windows 2008 server (domain controller) 192.168.1.101 - Windows 7 laptop (guest; not on domain) For some reason I am unable to ping, tracert or remote desktop to 192.168.1.100 from .42 or .101. I can remote between .42 and .101 no problem however. .100 cannot ping nor remote desktop to .42 or .101. Remote Desktop access is enabled on .100. I've opened the firewall rules. I've disabled the firewall domain profile. I've turned the firewall service off entirely. No matter what I do, the .100 host is unreachable by any other host on the network. I'm at my wit's end. Thanks in advance for any debug advice!

• Aironet 1130AG and WPA (not WPA2)

  Is it possible to enable this WAP to do WPA1? I've played with all sort of settings, but no matter what I set it to, it does WPA2. Even if I choose TKIP as the cipher. I need WPA for compatibility reasons. I'm running 12.3(7)JA1 firmware. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! I'm trying to get this company away from WEP, but WPA2 offers too many problems with their visitors (XP SP2 clients need to install patch, etc). I'll probably add a radius while I'm at it, but would love to get WPA + AES going. Or at least WPA + TKIP.

• Create 301 Redirection in Amazon Route 53 for Wildcard Subdomains

  My domain name hosted on Route 53 DNS. Amazon has a guide to do 301 redirection for www. To naked domain by point www. version to a S3 static website with 301 setted up. My question is, how can I have *.domain.com all have 301 redirec to naked domain name. I guess either: Some way to get all wildcard subdomains end up into one S3 bucket, how? Or: Use CloudFront on the www. version S3 site and put wildcard subdomains on the CloudFront, but how? Or: There's some hidden settings just lies on Router 53, then where? Or: use EC2, better not suggest me this, too costing for this task. Please advice.
