• Is it possible to retrieve lost Windows XP profile information?

  I'm running Windows XP Professional on a PC which is less than a year old. About 3 months ago I got an error on boot saying windows could not find my profile. At this point it created a temp one. On this occasion I copied the temp data back into my existing profile and carried on using it. After another month it died again and, once again set me up a temp user. Each time this happens I lose everything related to my profile (desktop, start menu, etc). I ran checks on the hard disk and these suggested nothing was wrong so this seems a software issue not a disk problem. On the advice of my computer manufacturer I am now considering reinstalling Windows but just wanted to check if there's any other ideas for things I might be able to try. Any suggestions for what could be causing the problem would also be gladly appreciated.

• please assist me debug a stack trace

  I am having an issue on a windows 2003 terminal server, where the system process is using a constantly high amount of CPU. I believe that it is the srv.sys that is causing an issue, but not quite sure how to fully diagnose the problem. I have looked at the stack for the srv.sys!workerthread, which is what seems to be using the CPU. The stack is as follows: 0 ntoskrnl.exe!KeSetBasePriorityThread+0xf7 1 ntoskrnl.exe!MiDeleteAddressesInWorkingSet+0x103 2 srv.sys!WorkerThread+0x7c 3 ntoskrnl.exe!FsRtNotifyFilterReportChange+0x10 4 ntoskrnl.exe!RtClearBits+0x24 Can anyone offer any advice based on the above, or some other things I could look at in order to get to the bottom of this? • Roaming Profiles, Folder redirection or... both

  Hello, i'm developing a remote desktop services in w2008r2. Now, it's going to be a server, but in the future it's possible that another server could be added to the farm. Now, i'm creating roaming profiles and folder redirection to save space. Now, i have some doubts... if i'm redirecting all the folders i can do through gpo (start menu, desktop, appdata, My Documents, Videos, Music...), does it make sense to use roaming profiles? I mean, i'm redirecting almost everything. So, if i don't use roaming profiles, what kind of data is not shared/roamed? Perhaps is not necessary and if i set roaming profiles, i will add more unnecessary complexity to the infraestructure. What do you think about? Some advice or recomendation? Thanks!

• Which tool do you use for tracking daily/weekly progress on your long-term goals?

  I read through this post and this post to get an idea of short-term task management applications out there. However, now I'm having a problem tracking my longer-term goals pertaining to things like career, education, and exercise. I just discovered Disciplanner which might meet my needs but haven't had time to set it up just yet. Not to mention, it took me about 2 weeks of playing with every online to-do list app I could find before I came to a decision on which to use. I'm very particular about my tasks and goal-setting, so I would prefer to get some advice from other superusers before diving into the web again to find another life-management website.

• How to debug xsane "no devices available" error on 64 bit Ubuntu 10.04

  I have a Brother MFC-J615W printer/scanner and I wish to use the scanning feature across a network with a computer running 64-bit Ubuntu 10.04. I have installed the drivers from the Brother website and followed all of the instructions, and printing works fine, but xsane (installed from repositories) produces a popup with the message "no devices available" on startup. I recently had success with a similar approach when installing drivers for a Brother MFC-495CW on 32-bit Unbuntu 9.10, so I am aware of issues such as requiring root access if the driver permissions are not set correctly, but running xsane as root does not solve this problem. Are there any tools available to debug this problem further or does anyone have advice on how to proceed?

• Streaming Flash Video - getting my feet wet

  I'm working on a project that will involve having a couple thousand short videos online. I haven't done anything with online video before and this is all a bit new to me, so I am looking for some general advice... I would like to use Flowplayer, and I would like to encode the videos as H264s. I am enamoured with Flowplayer's slow motion feature, which if I understand correctly, is only available using a Wowza server. I'm wondering: Is it advisable to use a delivery network of some sort? (Flowplayer seems to have a partnership with HDDN, and recommends them. http://www.hddn.com/) Or would I be better off purchasing Wowza and installing it on our own server? (At first glance, it looks as though signing up with a network like HDDN is much simpler, but perhaps there are problems that come along with this...?) Any tips / warnings of imminent peril would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

• Which is the best way to deploy a JBoss application?

  Hi there, we are currently developing a JBoss application. To deploy it, we have a total of four servers (three years old). I am wondering which might be the best to do? There could be a load balancer (even a load-balancer cluster, for failover) in front of two servers, each holding one JBoss and one PostgreSQl host inside XEN environments. Does this make sense? • Is there a way to modify the default size of a new side note in OneNote 2010?

  I am a fan of OneNote, but there is one aspect of it that makes it less useful than it could be. When I make a new side note (i.e. by clicking the OneNote icon in the system tray or pressing WindowsKey + N), the size of the window of the resulting note that opens is far too large. It probably takes up 20% of my reasonably high-res screen by default. I have to click and drag to resize it, and that's a waste of my time. So, I have a two part question: Is there a way of modifying some settings somewhere (perhaps in the registry?) so that the default window size of a new side note is smaller than the default? I would prefer something more in line with the size of a new "sticky" note in OS X. If not, does anyone know of a fast way to shrink the size of a window using the keyboard? I'd appreciate any advice that anyone can give. Thanks.

• Better to develop Ruby project on server or buy a faster desktop computer? B/c laptop too slow.

  I have a Linux laptop (Vostro V13) running a Celeron M chip. This is a fine laptop, but running unit tests especially for Rails applications is slow. I want a faster development environment but I don't want to spend too much money. So the choice I have is between $390 for a Linux desktop machine with a Pentium Dual Core Processor E5400 and just paying between $30 and $40 a month to Linode and trying to do development remotely on that server. Can anyone with experience developing server applications using both methods offer any advice?

• Run a program in compatibility mode without Administrator privileges

  I have a PC which is mostly used for playing games. The PC is a few years old, running XP, and most likely won't ever be upgraded to Windows 7. However, there are a few games that need to be run in compatibility mode for some reason, and this currently requires them to be run as the administrator. Unfortunately, I haven't found any way around this - although I have the administrator password, I don't want to reveal it to the others who use the PC, and this means that I have to be present every time to start the program for them (using Run as ... - Administrator). Is there any way I can allow these programs to be run in compatibility mode without requiring elevated user privileges? I have already made the standard user a Power User, but this hasn't helped at all. Any advice would be appreciated.

  I accidentally formatted my Drive D that contained all my Backups and Documents. I separated my files to my Drive D hoping I will not harm my files. Since I use Acronis Recovery to Install a new OS with some pre-installed application to my HDD I didn't realize I also formated/erase my Drive D. Now my drive D is unpartitioned. I am really in really in deep trouble and would need some urgent help, Please recommend a Software that at least can restore my Old Drive that contained my files. I'm assuming most of you think this is a duplicate of some old questions here, But I'm not looking for data recovery, I need to recover the whole partition with the files. I used to use "Recuva" but It only recovers files not the whole folders with the files in it. Please advice. Thank You!

  We're using CentOS and sendmail's m4 configuration. How do I set domains where emails should be delivered? I only want two domains, and would like email to all other domains blocked. I tried this in my "/etc/mail/sendmail.mc" file ... FEATURE(`relay_hosts_only,mydomain1.com,mydomain2.com')dnl But then got this error tryiing to generate the sendmail.cf file ... • Rsync like windows backup tool

  Hi, I need to backup some windows machines and have been unable to find the proper tool. What I need is a tool that does efficient copying of changed files to a windows network location, like Rsync does. In turn, the server will then back that up using rdiff-backup, a tool which does very clever incremental backups. Right now I'm using windows' 7 included backup feature, but I really don't get that. It's too much off-topic, but it doesn't suffice (seems buggy as well). I looked into Amanda, but as soon as it wanted to install MySQL, I aborted. I also tried Deltacopy, but unfortunately, I don't remember what the problem with that was... Any advice for an rsync like tool that just does daily syncs to a network location?

• Xen private networking between multiple hosts

  I have two physical hosts running Xen 3.2, sharing storage via iSCSI. On these two hosts are a number of domUs and I'd like to network them in multiple private networks so they can only contact other domUs on their private network. My understanding of the xen documentation suggests it's possible to do this within one dom0 (ie create virtual networks between domUs), but I've found nothing explaining how this can be implemented across multiple dom0s on different hosts. The only thing that jumps to mind is manually creating iptable rules to route data to the other host, but this seems to lack elegance and could quickly grow cumbersome. Any suggestions? All advice is much appreciated!

• Can I use Zoneedit to do URL rewrite?

  This is our scenario: Our DNS is hosted by a company. They don't manage the DNS. We use Zoneedit (www.zoneedit.com) to manage the DNS such as nameservers, CNAMEs, etc... Then we have our web host where we just have our files hosted. We have a subdomain created on zoneedit. We would like to do a URL rewrite so that subdomain.ourdomain.com is displayed as www.ourdomain.com/subdomain. Do I use Zoneedit to do the URL rewrite or the web host or the DNS host? I checked the Zoneedit docs but I could not find a way to do a URL rewrite. Need some advice. Thanks

• Changing IP every sec with Firefox

  I looking for ip changer what is faster than PROXY (i tried Elite Proxy Switcher + Firefox add-on, but it's too slow. I set automatic switching to 4 sec and yes he change the ip every 4 sec however it's not enough because it loads pages very slowly.) Secondly I tried the TOR Project but this is not good..because the TOR would be nice and working good however he needs more than 10 seconds, a new identity and it's not to good for me because i want to change my ip lass than 10 sec. So I find the solution. This is IPfucker alias ipFlood (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/firefox.../ipflood/) But it does not work on all sites unfortunately...because this is just simulation "Simulate the use of a series of proxy changing at each new connection.". • Unable to log into Windows XP Pro Domain Not Available

  Trying to access an old laptop I have but at the windows login screen I attempt to log in and get the message "Unable to log in because is unavailable". This laptop is not on a domain or a network and I do not know the computer name. I have blanked the passwords of the local administrator and user account using Offline NT Password and Registry Editor but still unable to log in? • Google Chrome appears to hijack default browser

  I read all the advice on how to make Firefox or IE for windows 7 the default browser. I know how to do this but the problem is whenever a program tries to open a page through the default browser it will default to Google Chrome and when I uninstalled Google Chrome then programs like Yahoo Messanger (getting a profile) would fail looking for chrome. I don't think Google would do this sort of thing "HiJack a Default Browser" I'm convinced it must be a trogen or virus or a registery hack. If so any ideas how I would go about fixing this without purchasing every virus/trogen program until it WAS removed This method could be an expensive fix. Thank you Russell Feldman

• How to avoid maximum Workgroup Manager connections in Mac OS X Server 10.6

  Is there a limit on the Mac OS X Server (10.6) Workgroup Manager in respect to concurrent connections to a server? I have an OS X server up and running and Open Directory configured but I am not able to log in remotely as I get the message the maximum number of connections for Workgroup Manager is already reached and I should wait for a user to disconnect. Even after a restart I get this message remotely. However, locally on the server I can start Workgroup Manager without any issues. It always lets me connect. Any advice what I need to do to make Workgroup Manager work from a remote location? I could not find any max connection setting in Server-Admin and nothing in the slapd log files. The server license says unlimited so I am quite sure it should not be a regular error message that indicates to me I should upgrade.

• Apple Automator "New PDF from Images" maintaining same filename

  I will potentially have 26k of old legacy PICT images to transfer first to PDF for migration. I am using Apple Automator and also the "Dispense Items Incrementally" to loop through it. However, I can't seem to let "New PDF from Images" to remember the original filename. Anyone able to offer some advice :) FYI, I am transforming it to PDF because I can't do it using ImageMagick to convert directly to my ultimate JPEG format. Due to the fact that my PICT was created very long ago and thus has some convert: improper image header error. See this ticket for more information. Thus I am doing a intermediate convert PICT to PDF first, then convert that PDF to JPEG :) The only thing left is the naming of the "Output File Name" which do not allow me to identify original filename. • Improving server security [closed]

  I've been developing webapps for a while ... and I always had a sysadmin which made the environment perfect to run my apps with no worries. But now I am starting a project on myself, and I need to set up a server, knowing near to nothing about it. All I need to do is just have a Linux, with a webserver (I usually used Apache), PHP and MySQL. I'll also need SSH, SSL to run https:// and FTP to transfer files. I know how to install almost everything (need advice about SSL) with Ubuntu Server, but I am concerned about the security topic ... say: firewall, open/closed ports, php security, etc ... Where can I found a good guide covering this topics? Everything else in the server... I don't need it, and I wanna know how to remove it, to avoid resources consumption. Final note: I'll be running the webapp at amazon-ec2 or rackspace cloud servers. Thanks in advance!!

• HP ProLiant DL320e G8 v2 - USB2.0 during POST

  Initially my USB2.0 ports were working during POST (and boot). However, now they appear not to be. I first noticed this when I could not access the RBSU by pressing F9 during POST. Then found that I couldn't boot from USB either (I was able to do both of these initially). When performing the boot via iLo remote console I can access all of the setups (i.e., all of the F(X)'s) and can boot virtual media from a 'removable drive'. Keyboard works fine once the OS is booted. Not really sure what to try here. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Nick.

• nginx is not using gzip to talk to backend servers

  Our web servers are running IIS 7 and are configured to compress dynamic and static content. When I hit these servers directly, gzip compression works. I recently placed nginx in front of them, and gzip compression has stopped. I was able to work around this by explicitly enabling gzip compression on nginx itself, but that seems a little inefficient considering I have half a dozen backends and only one active nginx box. It appears that nginx is stripping out the Accept-Encoding header. Does anyone have any advice for how to 'correct' this behavior? • How to discharge static electricity before opening a computer?

  Before opening a computer, I often hear advice to touch something that is "grounded" - a computer case for example, or a heating element - to avoid damaging the sensitive electronic equipment through static discharge. What exactly is true here, and what are the do's and don'ts. Touching what objects will actually work, and what won't? If I touch a computer case, does it matter what it stands on, and whether it is connected to an outlet? What other ways are there to protect the equipment from a static discharge than touching something grounded? Are there common pieces of clothing that I shouldn't be wearing when working inside a computer, for example a woollen pullover? There is a lot on Google, but there seem to be many contradictions and misconceptions out there, so I think this is a question worth having here.
