  • Cross-platform desktop programming: C++ vs. Python

    Alright, to start off, I have experience as an amateur Obj-C/Cocoa and Ruby w/Rails programmer. These are great, but they aren't really helpful for writing cross-platform applications (hopefully GNUStep will one day be complete enough for the first to be multi platform, but that day is not today). C++, from what I can gather, is extremely powerful but also a huge, ugly behemoth that can take half a decade or more to master. I've also read that you can very easily not only shoot yourself in the foot, but blow your entire leg off with it since memory management is all manual. Obviously, this is all quite intimidating. Is it correct? Python seems to provide most of the power of C++ and is much easier to pick up at the cost of speed. How big is this sacrifice? Is it meaningful or can it be ignored? Which will have me writing fast, stable, highly reliable applications in a reasonable amount of time? Also, is it better to use Qt for your UI or instead maintain separate, native front ends for each platform? EDIT: For extra clarity, there are two types applications I want to write: one is an extremely friendly and convenient database frontend and the other, which no doubt will come much later on, is a 3D world editor.

  • Palm Centro not even appearing on desktop

    Background: I'm trying to set up my dad's new installation of Xubuntu 12.10 (I finally got him to switch from Windows :-D) so he can sync his Palm Centro on his computer. I installed J-Pilot, but the problem is that his palm isn't even showing up anywhere on the computer. When it's plugged in, it lit up and began to charge when I told it to try and sync with the computer, but it failed the sync and Xubuntu still doesn't recognize it. Question: Does anyone know how I can get his Palm to be recognized by Xubuntu?

And when changing any setting on a VM I was obliged to type yes and then type the root password in another dialog using ubuntu 12.04 64bit

  • Pix for visual studio express 2012 (Desktop)

    (Originally asked on stackoverflow) Using visual c++ express 2010 for direct3d you have to download the directX sdk and there is a tool called pix for debugging shaders, looking at 3d resources etc. With visual studio 2012 express the directx sdk is included in the windows sdk that comes with it but this does not seem to include the winpix.exe tool. Is this very useful tool still available? I guess I can still use the one from the previous sdk but it seems wrong to install the entire sdk just for that tool. Is there a version for VS2012 express that I'm missing?

  • Fiber-Optic Cable Trick Brings Remote Triggering to Older Flashes

    Many older flashes lack for a jack to input a sync cable and rely exclusively on a simple slave mode triggered by the primary flash. This hack uses a piece of scrap fiber optic cable to trigger the flash in bright conditions. Using a flash as an optical slave indoors isn’t much of a problem, but if you introduce bright light (such as outdoor lighting conditions), the ambient light can overpower the small on-camera flash and render the optical slave function useless. To overcome this, Marcell over at Fiber Strobe (a blog dedicated to cataloging experiments in incorporating fiber optics into photography) came up with a simple work around. By using some foam crafting materials and tape, he whipped up a simple mount for a strand of scrap fiber optic cable to connect between the on-camera flash and the sensor on the slave flash. Once attached it works exactly like as sync cable would, except it’s transmitting a pulse of light instead of a pulse of electricity. Hit up the link below for more pictures and a build guide.     If you are the DBA in a large scale enterprise, you’re probably already monitoring your servers for up-time and performance. But if you work for a medium-sized business, a small shop, or even a one-man operation, chances are pretty good that you’re not doing that sort of monitoring. After all, which is more important, some monitoring or backup testing?  Backup testing, of course. Monitoring is frequently one of those things that you do when can get around to it.  Well, as you can see at the right, I have your round tuit ready to go. What if I told you that you could get monitoring on your servers for up-time, job completion, performance, all the standard stuff? And what if I told you that you wouldn’t need to install and configure another server in your environment to get it done? And what if I told you that you’d be able to set up and customize your alerts so you could know if your server was offline or a drive was full?   • Ubuntu server Mysql remote access from MySQL Workbench

    I have a newly install ubuntu installed the mysql server. After the basic config, I changed the my.cnf file and commented the bind_address I can start the server and added iptable for 3306. I also add the privileges to mysql server as follow: GRANT ALL PRIVILEGES ON . TO 'root'@'%' IDENTIFIED BY 'P@ssw0rd' WITH GRANT OPTION; FLUSH PRIVILEGES; exit However after connected from the mysql workbench, it shows no database. But it seems that have login. Anyone have faced that or can help me? Thx!

    This occurred after a Trojan incident. We managed to get the Trojan cleaned off the computer, but now we can't Right click the desktop. We have tried changing HKCU/software/microsoft/windows/current version/policies/explorer/noviewcontextmenu in the registry, and group policy user configuration/administrative templates/windows explorer/remove windows explorers default context menu, but neither worked. How do we reenable the right-click menu for the desktop? (it works everywhere else)

  • Nagios SSH remote checks and WMI Check

    I have install Nagios Core and I am using WMI Checks for Windows and Created a script to execute remote commands through ssh on my Linux machines. When Installing Nagios there is an option to run NsClient++, but I went with the WMI Checks because it is agent less. What are the advantages of using NsClient++ for Nagios? Also would calling too many commands through WMI or SSH hinder the performance of the remote host?

  • Finder dying when mac wakes from sleep

    I have this persisting issue where when i put my mac (snow leopard) to sleep on my macbook, whenever i wake the mac, everything is fine besides the Finder. The finder does not open up, none of the folders i click on (via desktop) open up, so ii end up killing my finder via activity monitor and it then resets my folder settings ( i have snap to grid and large icons for example). Whats going on and why is it doing this? Thanks in advance guys

  • Read/Select:Connection reset by peer (10054) during remote logoff in RealVNC

    I am using RealVNC 4.5 Enterprise on my Windows 7 client. I use this to connect to a remote system which is also running RealVNC 4.5 (on Windows 7 again). And then i logoff the remote system (server) and all of a sudden the realvnc viewer on the client closes with the message : "Read/Select:Connection reset by peer (10054)" It also asks if i want to reconnect again. Any idea why this is happening and how do i resolve this?

    I downloaded the Ubuntu Software to create a USB to install Ubuntu. I rebooted my PC (Windows 7), in wich i did a partition (:E) just for Ubuntu. But when i start the installer, it says there's no other OS in my computer, and doesn't give me the option to install it in :E, just the option to format the WHOLE hard drive and install it there. What can i do? Also, i tried Wubi before, but it had an error with "wubildr.mbr"

    This is maybe a stupid question, but how can I choose my own background image on ubuntu gnome 3?? I click on Settings - Background - then I click on the current background preview to change it but I see only the defaults images! No + symbol to add or something. On the 'Pictures' tab there is nothing to select, I get an empty white page? I am running ubuntu gnome 13.04 3.9.6-030906-generic. Thanks!

  • Transferring dmg files from a PC to an Apple

    Hi all, I have dmg files on my computer that I need to put on my friends new macbook. When I try to put the files on an external hard drive it says that they are too large to transfer (each file is about 8 gigs). Just trying to figure out the best way to do this transfer. We started doing it with an ethernet cable last night, and transferred about 8 gigs over the course of a couple of hours.

  • How to remove desktop environments?

    I installed few environments that I wanted to try out on Ubuntu 12.04, but none of them worked at all. It could be that I installed them all at the same time, meaning the OS didn't get a chance to work everything out, but either way, they didn't work. I would now like to remove them. The one's that I installed are Fluxbox, OpenBox, XFCE, and MATE. I installed them through the help of this site. Everything seemed to have been working properly until I actually tried to use the shells and nothing loaded at all. Except for Fluxbox, I think that one worked. I want to know of any way to repair or perhaps just remove the packages entirely. I might have already removed them because I did the apt-get remove command on all of them, but they were still in the list on the login screen.

  • How do I customize desktop wallpaper slideshow?

    I spent some time and tried varioues things but nothing works. Here's what I have tried so far(changing the slideshow manually): Making a new folder /usr/share/backgrounds/mywallpapers and add my own background-1.xml in there. Copying a bunch of my own wallpaper files into /usr/share/backgrounds/ Copy /usr/share/backgrounds/Contest/background-1.xml to /usr/share/backgrounds/ I logged out and in and still no changes in Appearance app. I have heard about Wallch but I don't want some app running in the background all the time. I'm not even sure Wallch will work with Gnome 3. I also tryied gnome-3-wp (Gnome 3 Wallpaper Slideshow app) but it just seems broken for Oneiric Ubuntu 11.10. Anyone has a solution?
