  • Package problems after upgrade

    I installed a new upgrade on ubuntu which seemed to fail near the end. Now I'm being told that an error has occurred and to please run apt-get to see what's wrong. After some further tries with that I eventually gave up. It seems there's a left over latex package(?) somewhere and I can't seem to get rid of or fix it.   • How do I get Outlook to auto fill information

    I repeatedly have to send emails that are nearly identical except they have a different case number. I'd like to setup outlook to just ask me for the case number, fill it in the appropriate place in the body and subject of the email and then send it to a preset list of recipients (it's a static list of people). I think some combination of Forms and Templates should be able to do this but I'm unsure how.

  • Effective Permissions displays incorrect information

    I have a security mystery :) Effective permissions tab shows that a few sampled users (IT ops) have any and all rights (all boxes are ticked). The permissions show that Local Administrators group has full access and some business users have too of which the sampled users are not members of. Local Administrators group has some AD IT Ops related groups of which the sampled users, again, appear not be members. The sampled users are not members of Domain Administrators either. I've tried tracing backwards (from permissions to user) and forwards (user to permission) and could not find anything. At this point, there are three options: I've missed something and they are members of some groups. There's another way of getting full permissions. Effective Permissions are horribly wrong. Is there a way to retrieve the decision logic of Effective Permissions? Any hints, tips, ideas? UPDATE: The winning answer is number 3 - Effective Permissions are horribly wrong. When comparing outputs as ran from the server logged on as admin and when running it as a regular user from remote computer show different results: All boxes (FULL) access and on server - None. Actually testing the access, of course, denies access.

  • iPod Touch 2g not recognised by iTunes (more information inside)

    My iPod Touch isn't being recognised by iTunes. Details: iPod Touch: 2nd generation / Laptop: Windows Vista / iTunes: latest version I have tried: using different cables; restarted my laptop and iPod. reinstalled iTunes. restarting services that were made by Apple; putting my iPod into restore mode; resetting my iPod; and still no luck getting it to be recognised by iTunes. This iPod works on other computers, and different iPod's work on my laptop. When I stopped all of the Apple services on my laptop, I got a message from iTunes when I connected my iPod saying that I needed to enable the services for it to work. But when I did enable the services again, the iPod still didn't show up on iTunes. I can't think what else I can do to solve the problem. Any ideas? Thank you very much in advance!

    I've just created a cluster for my file servers in Windows 2008 R2 Ent SP1 environment. The goal - an Active/Active cluster for web server data How do I go about telling the cluster to be active for both nodes? Do I have to tell the cluster to be active/active?   • Blue screen MEMORY_MANAGEMENT on Windows 7 Enterprise

    I'm running a machine (MSI GT 70) with 32 GB ram as a mobile server. It seems that at random points in time it will BSOD with as message MEMORY_MANAGEMENT. So the first thing I did was do several memtests, but they did not give away any defective modules. I'm a bit clueless at the moment as it just seems to happen at random points in time giving me little or no indication of what might be wrong. I opened up the dumps with BSODviewer, they just seem to point to the windows kernel. I tried reinstalling Windows but the behavior remains the same.

    Not sure this is the right place for this question, but here goes: I'm trying to make some sense of the /proc/pid/sched and /proc/pid/task/tid/sched files for a highly threaded server process, however I was not able to find a good explanation of how to interpret this file ( just a few bits here: http://knol.google.com/k/linux-performance-tuning-and-measurement# ) . I assume this entry in procfs is related to newer versions of the kernel that run with the CFS scheduler? CentOS distro running on a 2.6.24.7-149.el5rt kernel version with preempt rt patch. Any thoughts?

  • How to get cluster information remotely via Powershell?

    I've been trying to find a good way to gather various pieces of a windows cluster setup remotely, preferably via WMI, as we are not yet at a point where Powershell remoting is implemented (and I know this problem goes away with that). I know I can use the following to get the current node: Get-WmiObject Win32_ComputerSystem -ComputerName RemoteServer1 | Select Name I also need the name property of Get-Cluster, which I can't figure out how to get from a remote system. Is there something out there, or should I wait it out until Remoting gets implemented? I'm a newbie to all things clustering, just a dba looking to inventory our servers properly.   • Change/Deactivate the shell for an amount of users on SUSE Enterprise Server

    I have a SUSE Server to which ~300 users are connecting. About 100 of them have to be deactivated. I think it would be nice to change their shell to /bin/false either with chsh or with usermod. Do I have to type every command per line, or can I fill out a list of users which can be read from the script? I should mention that all of the 100 users have the same ending in their username. Can I work with wildcards here? e.g. usermod -s /bin/fish *ftpuser chsh -s /sbin/nologin *ftpuser

  • Feedback on available mid-to-enterprise level desktop backup solutions [closed]

    I am involved in the creation of a new backup solution to replace our current Retrospect setup, which has become a significant time sink to administer. We have almost 200 desktop and some laptop clients, both Windows and OS X. We're only interested in products oriented around disk-to-disk, and would be integrate well with our current set of nine NAS devices as target storage. I'd just like some feedback from anyone out there, as it's sometimes difficult otherwise to find objective reviews of software at this level. Both data and time are important enough that we need a reliable solution which won't be prone to self-destruction as often as Retrospect. Bonus points for de-duplication, which might help squeeze more service time out of our NAS setup in terms of capacity. Currently considering Commvault and Netbackup. Many other products I've seen don't have an OSX client. Any thoughts?

  • Alienware m15x (older model) BSOD investigation

    A frined of mine asked me to help him with an Alienware m15x laptop that had a little service history. It was bought in june 2008, serviced in january 2009 for a random fps drop problem, Alienware returned it saying nothing was wrong. The laptop still had hiccups, but after juggling a few drivers and settings, the fps drops weren't as noticeable. Eventually it died in Sept. 2009. It would not boot up locking itself on a white/gray screen. (i think it was overheating .. clocking in 100 degrees Celsius). So back to Alienware it went. They replaced the GPU and all was fine. Up until these blue screens started showing up. One other thing that was updated was the HDD and a Windows 7 reinstall, in August. From then on it seems to have started its BSOD. Could this be the culprit? Why? 0_o The original Windows was Vista but it was upgraded with a digital download/purchase of Windows 7 Home Premium and activated after installing windows. No errors on the old HDD, just on the latest installation. LE:Due note that now the old HDD is used to see if issues re-occur. So please, I am in need of someone who can interpret these windows dump files: Minidump I may have come to some conflicting conclusions. So if someone can clarify each dump/date and the probable cause/error it had; and a final conclusion or solution, we would be very grateful.   • Removing information about deleted volume

    In order to increase space in my c drive, I had to delete all my volumes and create again allocating more space to C which I did, after which my drive name G didn't exist. Before this I used to install all my softwares in G. Now since the drive does not exist, I want to remove all info about the softwares I installed in G as they got deleted when volume got deleted. I also want to install cilk++ but it gives me an error-invalid drive g:. If I insert pendrives so I get a volume named G, cilk++ installer runs but says that it will be integrated to visual studio 2008 which i previously had in G drive(but no longer exists) and doesn't show visual studio 2010 which i recently installed in C drive. How do I fix this? Please help.

  • How to install Red Hat Enterprise Linux on Apple Macbook Pro MacBookPro4,1

    I have a one year old Mac Book Pro that I am trying to get RHEL 5.4 installed on via bootcamp. No matter what I do I can't get the installer to boot. I have tried multiple DVD's and even verified the install works on a new Mac Book Pro. Most of the time the installer simply locks up. I usually use Linux text with all-generic-ide on the boot line. I removed the ide parameter and I just used linux text. The results I get are that a bunch of kernel messages appear then the background turns blue and a thin text box pops up saying its loading ata..... something it disappears too fast for me to read. Then the machine freezes. I pressed the alt function keys to see if I could look at the system log, here is what it says: Alt-f3 says "trying to mount CD device hda" Alt-f4 says status error: hda: lastFailedSense Hda: Failed opcode was: unknown Hda: Lost interrupt Hda: Drive not ready for command Ide-cd: command 0x3 timed out Above this junk it looks like it found the partition because it knew it was 20 GB and listed as /dev/sda3. I think it has something to do with the CD drive, is that possible? Thanks again for the support. PS I posted in the apple support forums ( Apple.com Support Discussions Boot Camp Installation and Storage) and didn't get an answer.

    Has anybody who administers email servers or spam filtering noticed that in last couple of weeks the spam volume has dropped significantly? Is there a chart provided by one of the major spam filtering companies? Edit: Based on our internal stats, although it varies, on the two weeks starting the day after Christmas (Sunday), spam seems to be coming in about half as much as it did before Christmas.

    I am running NDB mysql. the log files fills up the /var directory. therefore i cant start the ndbd service now. as a temporary fix, i have deleted the log files and again working fine. but again the log files fill up the /var directory. i got plenty of space in other partition. therefore i would like to swap the partition from one directory to /var. here if my input from df -h Filesystem Type Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on /dev/mapper/VolGroup00-LogVol00 ext3 54G 2.9G 49G 6% / /dev/cciss/c0d0p1 ext3 99M 14M 81M 14% /boot none tmpfs 1013M 0 1013M 0% /dev/shm /dev/cciss/c0d0p2 ext3 9.7G 9.7G 0 100% /var there are plenty of space in /dev/mapper/VolGroup00-LogVol00.   • Vmware Player network adapters have no network or internet access in Windows 7 enterprise

    As per the title. My VMWare player installation has setup the two network adaptor VMnet1 and VMnet8 and they are picked up as unidentified networks with no network access (i need this to activate my windows server installation on it). The option to change the network location is not available (this might be because of network policy on the domain despite having set this as configurable in the local security policy section). Is there anyway i can change how these networks are detected or alter the configuration of vmware to get around this?
