I have a Windows 7 machine and XP machine on the same router. If someone is using the XP machine, how can I see what they're doing from my Windows 7 machine?
Hi,
i'm trying to setup windows 2008 server as a L2TP/IPSEC VPN server (PPTP is not secure), to receive windows (xp+) and Mac connections.
The win2008 is behind the router. Can anyone provide easy step-by-step instructions? I tries several tutorial but no luck.
Also VPN clients setup both on mac and windows would be very helpful.
Thanks in advance.
I downloaded some mkv/mp4 files with my new router (I can download directly from it, using transmission), and all of them seem to be corrupted: lags, strange artifacts when using vlc, crashes with mp4, etc.
When a downloaded part is corrupted, transmission warns you and downloads that part again. My question is: even after the transmission verification, is it possible that the downloaded file is still corrupt?
Hi Folks -
New to Super User, so I hope this question fits in with the guidelines.
Very strange problem I am having, and I am at a loss as to how to continue troubleshooting this one. The basic problem is that when I attempt to watch streamed video on a particular display device (an Optoma HD180 projector), my network connectivity drops like a stone to barely measurable levels.
This is my setup:
I have a Dell H2C 730x running Windows 7 64bit. This particular computer has two ATI Radeon HD 4800 video cards. I have two Samsung 22" monitors connected to one card, and an Optoma HD180 digital projector connected to the other card via an HDMI cable.
My internet connection is normally a reliable 6Mbps.
The problem I am having occurs when I stream video (or even just browse the web) on the Optoma Projector. When I do this, my internet connection drops to practically zero (just a few kilobits per second). When I move the browser away from the projector, and over to one of my Samsung monitors, the internet connection comes right back. Note that the Optoma projector is on and enabled as a third monitor all this time. I can move the mouse around on the projector without triggering the problem.
I tried pinging my router when I was playing a movie on one of the monitors, and I get a 1 millisecond response. However, when I have the movie playing on the Optoma projecter, pinging the router gives me response times in the hundreds of milliseconds, or times out completely. So, it clearly is something local to my machine - and not some sort of throttling occurring down the line.
I would think that it is possibly something to do with the HDMI driver conflicting somehow with my network driver (which is a USB-based wireless connection).
This one has me really stumped. Anyone have any ideas?
EDIT: I am now leaning towards the possibility that the HDMI cable is somehow interfering with the wireless network, when large amounts of data are being pushed through the cable. Is this possible?
dear sir,
please help me i have reliance bandwidth connection & i want to set local area network without use a router please help how set this

We have a local network (A) of about 50 computers connected via gigabit ethernet. We get a connection to the internet using two broadband connections to a backbone and distribute the bandwidth across the 50 computers using a CISCO 1811 router, but the bandwidth is not enough for everybody.
There is a campus wide wireless network(B) that has very high bandwidth, is there a device or way to setup multiple individual connections to network B and supply the bandwidth to our network A?
I'm setting up a Debian box as a router for 4 subnets. For that I have defined 4 virtual interfaces on the NIC where the LAN is connected (eth1).

I have two other computers connected to this network. One has IP 10.1.1.12 (subnet mask 255.255.255.0) and the other one 10.1.2.20 (subnet mask 255.255.255.0). I want to be able to reach 10.1.1.12 from 10.1.2.20.
Since packet forwarding is enabled in the router and the policy of the FORWARD chain is ACCEPT (and there are no other rules), I understand that there should be no problem to ping from 10.1.2.20 to 10.1.1.12 going through the router.
However, this is what I get:

Why does this happen?
From what I've read the Redirect Host response has something to do with the fact that the two hosts are in the same network and there being a shorter route (or so I understood). They are in fact in the same physical network, but why would there be a better route if they are not on the same subnet (they can't see each other)?
What am I missing?

can I set the default GW to be the Link Local address of the next hop router. I understand this is a strange thing to do, I'm mostly wondering it is possible?
I am using ADSL2+, and the sustained connection can go up to 1.3MB/s,
but recently the HTTP connection has been quite slow ( other port i.e. ftp, torrent, etc are fine).
I am using Netgear modem/router for my ADSL connection, and am using Netgear switches for my LAN (connected to the modem).
What can go wrong and how can I investigate?
I'm currently testing out a new proxy system that I'd like to try out on my own computer. Because I do not have an additional PC available, I though I'd do it with VMware. Here's what I'd like to do:
The physical computer is to make an internet connection using the VMware proxy and not the router. Is this (1) possible and (2) if so, how am I to accomplish this?
Thanks!
This started a few weeks ago and we thought it was a virus so we checked every computer and all though 50%(Yeah, that's right) were infected once they were cleaned the problem didn't go away. It's really frustrating so I want to figure it out so I need suggestions on how to find the culprit. I think the router has logging but it logs everyone so it's hard to tell and I might be able to setup a proxy but again it's hard to tell when and what to monitor. What are your suggestions?
I am using Xampp so I can test my web application directly on my own computer. I am concerned that someone can access my Xampp site since I am still connected to the internet. However, I have NOT explicitly enabled any port forwarding with respect to my Xampp site in my router firewall settings. Furthermore, I am using a dynamic ip address. Given the factors already stated, can someone from outside my local network still access my locally ran website?
If I have two domains pointing to the same machine, but one resolves to an internal address and the other to my internet facing router, will there be any differnce in route taken to my machine (primarily in terms of performanc).
eg.
internal.mydomain.com resolves to 192.168.1.200
external.mydomain.com resolves to A.Web.External.IP
both eventually resolve back to the same machine. For a client in the network, will using the external address give a performance penalty?
I'm having an issue where my Exchange Edge Transport server receives mail (found in logs) and then it vanishes, never ending up in the users mailbox, I have a edge subscription setup between it and the main Exchange server, how can I go about tracing the message to figure out what is broken? I also have found records of the message in the logs on the main Exchange server.
Thanks a ton for any help
Edit:
If I change port 25 on my main router to point to the main exchange server as opposed to the Edge Transport, email comes through fine form external domains and delivered in the correct mailbox
I want to restrict all traffic from my ubuntu-machine to come or go from the local network (eth0) or from or to my VPN (tun0).
It should be possible to connect the router in the local network but not possible to leave the local network not using the VPN.
Since i have no experience with iptables and i couldn't find some how-to i tried ufw but i did not succeed.
Thank you for some hints or code snippets how to come closer!
My iPod doesn't receive the signal from the router whereas my laptop does(50%).
I am wondering if there is a way iPod can be configured to receive signal from the Laptop.
Problem setting up wireless connection on my new ACER Netbook using Win 7 Starter. Works fine with LAN cable from NETGEAR WGT624V3 router with updated firmware. The NETGEAR does not see the ACER, but does see my XP Laptop. I'm also running a wireless, BlueRay DVD.
When I run getmac I get hardware not pesent, my mac address, Hardware not present.
Is there a switch that needs to be set?
Hi,
I have a router through which 10 PC's are connected to run internet, almost all PC's have uTorrent. I want to detect that how in many PC's uTorrent is running at a time.
Is there any way or tool through which I can detect this.
Thanks

I'm looking for help with a Vista Home Premium laptop that has trouble accessing any resource on our home network, but accesses the Internet just fine.
The set-up is this: The Vista laptop and a MacBook Pro connect wirelessly to the router-modem. A Synology DS212j NAS drive has a wired connection to the router-modem. Devices on the local network are always referred to by IP address, so this cannot be a DNS issue.
The MacBook Pro connects reliably to the NA via AFP (network shared folders), SMB (network shared folders) and HTTP.
The Vista laptop connects to and browses sites on the Internet without any problems.
It can log into the NAS via SMB and list the shared folders (so there is nothing wrong with the log-in credentials), but when it tries to open any of the folders Explorer just hangs with the spinning cursor for several minutes and then says "\192.168.1.64\shared\Photos is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. The specified network name is no longer available."
It can ping the NAS successfully.
If I try to open the NAS drive's web interface, the browser just hangs. This is the same with IE, Firefox and Chrome. (There is no proxy.)
I can log into the NAS drive with FTP and navigate directories, but when I try to list the contents of a directory with more than a handful of entries, the ftp client hangs.
I set up a website on the MacBook. The Vista laptop was able to load some of the pages, but loading any of the images was very hit and miss. Images embedded in HTML pages never worked no matter how many times I reloaded the page, but when I linked directly to the image it did load (though several attempts were sometimes needed).
I tried all of this with the Windows Firewall turned off, and with AVG turned off. That made no difference.
I'd really appreciate any suggestions anyone can make. The fact that the Vista laptop has trouble with HTTP and FTP as well as SMB connections suggests to me that this is a problem at the TCP level or below. But don't forget it accesses sites outside the LAN with no problems.
Hi,
I play QuakeLive and most servers are 80+ ping, except for geographically local servers where I get 50 ping.
Is there any way to lower my ping via settings in Windows 7, my DSL modem or my router? I am running Tomato on a WRT54GL and my desktop is wired to it (not wifi).
Anyone got any ideas how to set up a wireless network bridge between the routers mentioned above?
I have a router connected to the internet in one part of the house (BTVoyager) but the wireless range doesnt reach to the other end of the house :-( I also have two spare wireless routers(Belkin G+ Mimo and D-Link DSL-G604T) but as far as I can tell neither of them support wireless bridging.
I need a cheap netbook for "router" functions. [OpenBSD/Scientific Linux/whatever will be on it on OS level]. So once I configure it I will put it somewhere down for YEARS.
The Question is: What is the lifespan difference of the netbook if it will be [for years]:
with opened lid
with closed lid
I don't think there will be heat problems, because netbooks doesn't produce too much heat. But will ex.: a closed lid [for years] decrease the lifespan of a netbook?
Hello all,
So my school has set up a ton of wireless access points and now they want me to turn off the wireless functionality of my router. I have a Netgear WNR2000 and I can't find the option to turn off the wireless.
Thank you for your help
