• Issues with web hosting at home

  I want to host a small personal website at home. One basic problem I am hitting is, From inside home network, I cannot access my domain name. I have to use the local ip (something like 192.168.1.4) to access the website. This ip is the desktop which is hosting the website. Because of this mapping, I have issues setting up a simple wordpress blog on it too. How do I get past this issue? edit:0 when I try to access www.example.com (my domain) from within my home network, I get redirected to my router login. PS: 1) I am using dyndns service to map my non-static ip to my domain name. 2) My portforwarding works fine.

  I have an Ubuntu Server 11.04 x64 which I want to secure. The server will be open to Internet and I want to be able to SSH/SFTP into the machine and the SSH-server runs on a custom set port. I also want a web server accessible from the Internet. These tasks seems not to hard to perform but I also want SAMBA-shares to be accessible from within the local network and this seems to be a bit trickier. If possible I also want to be able to "stealth" the ports necessary to protect the server further but also allow the SAMBA-shares to be automatically found within the local network. I've never configured firewalls before except for a router and I always bump into a bunch of problem when doing it all by myself so I was hoping for some tips or preferably a guide on how to this. Thank you! Update: On second thought I'd could just as likely go with UFW if the same settings are achievable ("stealth" ports).

• Do I need a wifi card to have internet access?

  I am attempting to set up a wireless network on 11.04, freshly download today. The router is on and working. However, I do not have a wifi "card" (which I am assuming is a little USB-type thing that allows internet access, but correct me if I am wrong) and every time I try to type in the MAC address and everything, nothing works. I also get the "firmware missing" error when I scroll over the signal strength, which I have tried looking up but have been unsuccessful with completely understanding it. I guess my main question is do I need another little device to be able to use wifi on my ubuntu? I do have an ethernet cable but another person is using it and I do not want to be tied down to that cable. the problem is that none of the wireless networks show up, however they show up when I go into Windows mode on my laptop. I get an error message at the top saying "firmware missing" which I have tried looking up but still have no straight answer for.

  I received a software update for Ubuntu 12.10 while using Zorin OS6 wireless. I accepted the update and installed 12.10. Please tell me the step by step, using layman's terms, on how to get Google Chrome, or Mozilla Firefox to connect to the Internet? I am receiving DNS server error with both browsers. I can connect to my router wired or wireless. I posted and received initial information but was not sure exactly what some of the terms were and or what to do next etc. I am not necessarily familiar with some technical terms, or do I need to install additional plug-ins? I do not know what proxy or DCHP means or what do with these terms please, please help. I am not a programmer, nor do I work in IT. Again please help.

• What's the correct MAAS DHCP configuration?

  I've set up a MAAS controller by following this documentation: http://maas.ubuntu.com/docs1.4/cluster-configuration.html However, when I got to the DHCP configurations I was a little puzzled. The controller I created is at 172.16.142.61. It looks like that's the address for the "IP" text field. Going down the rest of the list I'm unsure of though. Should I just put in the subnet/broadcast/router (is that the gateway?) that the MAAS server resides in or am I suppost to just list the static address of the MAAS server and then define my own "virtual" subnet in the fields below?

  I'm using an IBM Thinkpad X21 as a 3G router. It's running a server install of lucid. The laptop has the lid up most of the time. There is no X, just a plain console. The colsole blanks itself, but the LCD backlight is always on. The graphics chip is ATI Technologies Inc Rage Mobility P/M AGP 2x (rev 64). • Wubi downloaded and installed 64bit 12.10 on my 32bit netbook

  I downloaded the Wubi installer on my atom N450 netbook. When I started up Ubuntu I got an error that read failed to change the mode of /ect/passwd- to 0600. Then while it booted it froze and several strange characters filled the screen. Finally it loaded it ran pretty slow, and I could connect to my router, but not to the internet. Ping 8.8.8.8 showed no server found. So I checked the about computer and it said I was running the 64 bit installation. Now I know that my computer has a low power 32 bit chip and even the Ubuntu iso download suggested a 32 bit installation. So I went to double check and see if I just missed the option for a 32 bit Wubi install and I did not. There was no option. Is there any way to download a 32 bit version of 12.10 through the Wubi?

• Extremely slow transfer speed ubuntu -> Windows

  I have two laptops, One is running Ubuntu 12.04 (EXT4) the other is running Windows 7 (NTFS). I am copying over 40gb of data (one file) from the Ubuntu laptop to the Windows Laptop. (Browse the shared folder on Ubuntu using Windows copy/paste) But I am getting transfer speeds topping out at ~700kb/s Surely this is not right. I am transferring via wifi on both laptops.   Hi evryone I have question that really make me mad..I search every where and I couldn't find the answer.pleas read the details carefully: I have broadband (Wan mini-port PPPOE) account from a wierless network near from us...I'm receiving the signal with grid and Alfa AWUS036H wireless usb adapter.In all of windows version I can connect through my broadband when I do these steps 1.setup new connection or network 2.connect to the internet 3.setup new broadband connection then I but the ISP name(not Important just to remember my broadband connection) and then i put the username and password then connect. I can find and connect to my wireless networkbut when I make Dsl connection in ubuntu 12.04LTS and I put the username and password I couldn't connect.. I tried this tool"gnome dial up tool" and wouldn't work.. in other way..(how can I connect to broadband connection through ALFA USB adapter??) my wireless network have a servers when i check with winbox: mac adress ip adress server name version router board verson and I connect PPP through them... any answer will help me ..so we could solve this problem. thanks.

• Why do the interfaces show ipv6 address along with ipv4

  I have manually specified only ipv4 address for my interfaces. But all the interfaces automatically show inet6 address as well. Does it mean that ubuntu starts an ipv6 tunnel by default. If it does, isn't it dangerous, as ipv6 assigns public ips for all LAN clients. I only have a firewall on my NAT router, and my clients, who's interfaces show ipv6 address, do not have firewalls. • Regular wireless dropouts on new lenovo T440s in Ubuntu 14.04

  Over the last 24 hours my wireless has dropped out regularly. I've tested to make sure it isn't my router (my phone and everyone in the house isn't having problems using the wifi). This is a brand-new installation of Ubuntu 14.04 and according to uname I'm running kernel 3.13.0-24-generic. Now, my laptop has an Intel 7260AC dual band wireless card and I've read that Ubuntu has been having trouble with these. I notice that at http://www.intel.com/support/wireless/wlan/sb/CS-034398.htm There are some updated drivers for my kernel version. However I have no idea how to update the kernel to use these drivers instead so that I can see if this will fix it. Can anyone help? These dropouts are really annoying. EDIT: Upgrading to 3.14.6 did not help.

• How to restart WiFi interface without rebooting (it drops connection)?

  I boot into ubuntu and it connects to the Wifi network fine. After about 10-15min the DNS stop resolving any website and a couple of minutes later network-managers tells me that I'm disconnected and tries to reconnect constantly to my router and fails to do it. Upon Ubuntu restart everything works fine for the first 10-15min again. When I boot into Mac OS X everything is fine with the same connection! How do I restart wifi interface? sudo ifdow wlan0 just tells me that wlan0 is not configured and wlan0 doesn't appear in /etc/network/interfaces either, which I find strange.... (unless network-manager is doing it behind my back).

• Laptop not syncing with Ubuntu One

  I have a desktop running Maverick, and a laptop running Lucid. Both are supposed to be linked to my Ubuntu One account. The desktop syncs fine, but when I started the laptop for the first time in a couple of months, it wouldn't sync any more. The Ubuntu One Preferences window either reports "Synchronisation complete" even though no recent files have been downloaded nor have any test files created in the relevant synced folder been uploaded, or it says "Synchronisation in progress", which does not appear to be happening as it stays like this for ages and the lights on my router suggest no traffic is going through. Have repeatedly tried disconnecting and reconnecting, and removing the device from the account then reattaching it, all to no avail.

• Wifi is connected but internet not working?

  I have a lenovo x230 running ubuntu 12.04lts. I've been using it just fine for a while, but all of a sudden the internet's stopped working. It's connected to the router just fine (I can see the antenna bars saying it's connected) but when I try to go to a webpage, it's just loading forever. I've tried the fix listed here (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1985079) but it hasn't done anything (the instructions are a little confusing though). I'm booting windows 7 right now and the internet works just fine when I'm on windows, so I know it must be a problem with ubuntu. I haven't touched any network settings before this problem happened, and I've been using it just fine for months, so I don't know why I'm getting this problem all of a sudden. Oh and I haven't updated anything in a few weeks (you know when the update manager pops up every so often listing all the things there's an update for) so I know it's not some update that broke it.
