• How can I automatically require a password when connecting to a WD MyBookLive?

  I have created a user which has specific privileges to access the shares on our WD MyBookLive Network drive (ie it requires a password to connect), however after connecting once Windows seems to remember the password (or at least for the rest of the session). How can I make it so it is necessary to require a password every time the user connects to the drive or makes some change on Windows? I am particularly thinking of Cryptolocker and other variants of "ransomeware" which will try and connect to the drive and encrypt it.

• What is the pixel clock setting on my monitor actually doing?

  I am experiencing display interference on a dell 24" flat panel monitor.I find that if I adjust the pixel clock settings up or down in the monitor's on-screen menus, the interference goes away for a while. The monitor is attached to a Macbook Pro using a mini display to VGA adapter. I have found that in a different house, I get the interference problem less so it might be related to electricity supply or possibly even ethernet powerline (total guess). What does the pixel clock setting actually do and does this behaviour point to a likely cause of the interference?

• ownership of hard drive recoveery of files Windows 7

  Here is the issue. I have an old laptop that died that was running xp. I now have a win 7 laptop. I need to get the files off the old drive. Win 7 will not let me take ownership of the drive. I can runn the comand prompt in regular mode and do a dir on the drive that shows up as Q: drive in regular mode. I gives me the volume as c and the serial number. I can not take ownership in regular mode with the comand prompt or other means. Microsoft site says use safe mode with networking. So I go to safe mode the drive shows up as G: in safe mode. I use the comand prompt Takeown /f G: and get the device is not ready error. I am at a loss. All I want is to retrieve my files from this drive. Any ideas or sugestions. I don't see how you can dir and get some info in one mode and not acces it in another. I have to get ownership and permissions fixed to get in the drive to get my files. Thanks in advance. I might add that I am using a usb3.0 to ide/sata cable adapter. Software came with the device but I can't make heads or tails out of the manual to know if any of the software can help me. The soft ware is PCClone Ex lite, and Clone Drive Soft ware

• Booting ubuntu from usb hdd: GRUB menu not shown

  Hello, could anyone help me to boot ubuntu-9.04 from usb hard disk? This disk contains /boot primary partition. During ubuntu installation I used "Advanced" button and asked to install GRUB to the /boot partition. Later I checked whether GRUB files are really present in this partition. They are. However, I get stuck while trying to boot. The boot menu ("ubuntu generic version", "ubuntu recovery mode", etc...) is not shown. Instead I am thrown to GRUB minimal bash-like version. I feel at a loss and have no idea why I am pointed to this minimal version. Can anybody prompt me what to do?

  I'm thinking of buying a drive dock to put my unused large HDD to use. I will also probably use the dock to backup files and swap the drives regularly. I have a few questions though: Are they noisy? I plan to use them via USB (because I don't think I have eSata connectors), am I gonna want to kill myself every time I backup? (I know it's supposed to be 480 Mbps, but how realistic is this?) Do you recommend a particular model? (I was thinking about this Startech HDD dock) Thank you

  I have Western Digital My Passport Essential Portable Hard Drive with USB3 and Model:WDBACY5000ABK-EESN. Until about two or three months ago when I connected that to My Laptop USB3 port, that worked very well. But now when I'm connecting that to My device, The system does not detect any Hard Drives. When plug in the USB2 port is working properly. I connected that to another Laptop whit USB3 port but I had the same problem. I tested My Laptop port with a Flash Memory by USB3 and ports were healthy and I'm sure they are working. For this issue, I changed the windows, but it still did not work. What can I do? • grub2 error: out of disk

  I'm trying to make a 250G USB hard disk Ubuntu-bootable on a Compaq nc6220 laptop. I've removed all other disks, so /dev/sda (the USB disk) is the only disk other than CDROM. I installed Ubuntu 9.10 to this disk from the live CD, putting the bootloader on /dev/sda . The default system couldn't be booted, and nothing I did in the Grub menu/cmdline helped. So I chrooted onto the disk and did grub-install /dev/sda. That seemed to work fine, but Grub (1.97 beta 4) keeps coming up with error: out of disk Even when I drop to the command line to do something simple like ls or help, it's always the same error message. Any hints for resolving this, please?

  I have a PCMCIA (Cardbus) 32bit USB 2.0 2-port card. If I plug my MP3 player in it works fine. I have a USB adapter for a hard disk drive. When I plug that into the PCMCIA USB slot the light on that hard disk flashed between red and green - it should stay green. "USB Mass Storage device" is added in the Device Manager, but no drive letter appears in My Computer. The installing device icon down by the clock never goes away. (Windows XP SP3.)

• Portable Display doesn't work anymore

  My USB portable monitor will not work since I installed the hard drive onto an HP laptop. I have installed all the new hardware drivers and do not have any more device issues in device manager view. My old laptop was a lenovo. The new one is an HP. The system seems to recognize devices that I connect via, usb but the portable display still does not show anything on the screen. It is probably a conflict in the registry but I'm not sure how to find it and the Power User does not have the luxury of letting me troubleshoot for hours to isolate the problem.

  My ViewSonic CD3200-EU monitor doesn't seem to have an option to scale the image vertically.   With a typical USB hard drive enclosure, is the full range of drive power management functionality available? In what may be an unrelated matter: is it possible to suspend a PC without unmounting an attached USB-powered drive, and then remounting it on resume? This is the behaviour I'm currently seeing (running Ubuntu linux 10.10). Are there certain models or brands that provide more complete control over this aspect of drive operation?   I tried to upgrade a laptop to SP3, which broke it. I later found out SP3 doesn't work on that 2002 laptop. I can't uninstall SP3, or fix SP2, because the hard drive is now not detected during setup (I've read that's the problem you get). I put the hard drive in a USB drive case and plugged it into my other laptop, and I can read (& write to) the disk okay. (The hard drive won't fit in my other laptop, so I'm using USB.) I need to get that disk back to SP2, or fix whatever files got screwed up causing the disk to not be recognized. I don't want to do a re-install as there are 80GB of files on it I need, and they won't fit on the HD of my other laptop, and also because I no longer have some of the install CDs for software on it. What do I need to do to fix that drive from my other laptop? (I don't want my working laptop (XP SP3) to get screwed with by putting an SP2 disk in the CD drive, or the non-o/s data on the other hard drive screwed with.)

• My Hard Drive isn't Working

  I never use Safely Remove Hardware with Windows XP. It has been working for me for years with my SD card, mouse, hard drive and memory stick. My hard drive has a USB cable and power cord so I can hook it up to any desktop hard drive. Now my hard drives don't like this and I did not know this till now. I am always careful and to wait till it is all finish accessing the USB before I unplug it. Now three of my hard drives can't be seen by Windows, though the others still work. when I hook it up to another computer it works fine. I use the same USB cable to hook up all of my hard drives one at a time. So my USB cable is good. I think that when I unplugged the hard drive this one time, it had a file it still wanted to see and now only this drive does not work only this computer. Then the same thing happens to my other two hard drive after I used it for a week with the same cables. How can I fix this?

  Say i'm coding in emacs and want to start up a music program. Because it takes too long to start up i go back to coding and type away. When the music application starts up, the focus is stolen (gasp! stolen!) away from emacs and goes to the music application, often mid-thought. Is there any way to keep this from happening and have the newly started application not have focus until i see that it's up and ready to be used? Besides getting rid of my ADD of course. Or getting an impossibly fast computer that can keep up with my mind. i'm using a Windows XP system, but i will soon have a Windows 7 system, and i have Linux at home.

• Why sizes are different, and what do they mean?

  I have a 1 TB hard drive that consists of one NTFS partition which I use to back up my data (no operating system). The size of all the data in it is : 726 GB, size on disk: 728 GB, and the used space when I check the properties is: 731 GB. There's a 5 GB difference between the size and the used space. Why is that huge difference there? What's the difference between these sizes? (size, size on disk, and used space) Is there a way to calculate the difference, and be sure the HDD is not messing around? Is that normal?

• Why is my portable WD MY PASSPORT drive is not recognized?

  My "MY PASSPORT" (Western Digital) portable drive is not recognized OSx. It used to be recognized, but not anymore. It does not appear in /Volumes. The hard drive is recognized by a Linux machine. • What Filesystem should be used for a 4TB drive for both Windows and OSX compatibility? [closed]

  Note: I am aware of similar questions. The one's I seen here are for Windows, OSX, and Linux (which I do not need). I also can use Mountain Lion, which the other questions did not mention. I was going to use NTFS, but OSX Mountain Lion can only read that filesystem and not write to it for some reason. I want to use something native between OSX and Windows, as I don't want to risk losing the data over filesystem incompatibilities. I have USB 3.0 and want something that will allow files greater than 4GB. I do not mind installing a small set of drivers on the Windows machine(s), but I would strongly prefer to leave the Mac machine untouched. Thanks!

• Effective system to backup this setup?

  I currently have my development environment on a usb hd. It has things like portable xampp, virtualbox with ubuntu guest, portable firefox and other dev tools. It works fantastic! I can attach it to almost any computer and all works fine. However, if this drive decides to go suicide on me I will be close behind it. The problem I'm having is I use this portable HD almost all the time and so I need a fast way to backup the entire drive. It is around 400gb. Any advice?
