• FreeBSD 9 (amd64) reboot/shutdown process is very slow

  I have a Dell Poweredge 2900 III with FreeBSD 9 (amd64), the server uses mfi wich handles a raid10, I had to reboot the server, but notice that either when rebooting or shutting down the server, something is going wrong, besides taking to much time to reboot/shutdown, after rebooting I notice that that some ldap instances within some jails could'nt start and this was because the database was corrupted. This make me think that probably something was wrong with the disks or mfi card, but checking the disk array / logs everything seems to be working fine. My set up is something like this: Host server has the minimum base of FreeBSD 9 amd64, within I create some jails, the ones contain services like mysql, email, and some others ldap. With FreeBSD 7 and 8 I didn't notice this behavior but with FreeBSD 9 something is not working well. I did a clean installation of FreeBSD 9 and root filesystem is using ZFS. • Fixed ruby/mysql connection with new libmysql.dll, and broke Apache in the process

  Ok so bit of background - all my development has been on a local Windows 7 machine. I had Apache with PHP/MySQL running with no issues. Been using ruby (1.9.3 and latest rails release 3.2.9) with built in webrick server, but had a devil of a time connecting to mysql. Did some research, updated my libmysql.dll file in c:/ruby/bin and it worked! Very happy... except now Apache stopped working. In my attempt to resolve the issue I found an older copy of libmysql.dll, renamed the new file, copied the old file back to c:ruby/bin and apache works, ruby does not. So I can take this ass backwards approach but obviously this seems pretty stupid. I was surprised that Apache was using the dll file in ruby/bin folder. I presume this is related to path variables perhaps? I guess I was hoping someone could direct me as to how I can use one dll file for apache and another for ruby. Or if you have some other smarter approach - I've smart enough to follow directions to install apache from scratch and enable php on windows as well as ubuntu, but I'm not much of a sys admin, just a semi competent web developer.

  I just installed Postfix. i have not yet done any configuration on it. Each time I try to use it to sendmail from another application, it keeps telling me that COnnection was refused from the ip I want to connect to. • Configuring weblogic server console with external server urls, etc

  there are obviously various 'canned' configuration options in oracle's weblogic server console for setting up data sources, jms queues, ldap servers etc, etc. What i want however is a way to configure other servers, mostly server urls, etc, in the console as well, and allow web applications running on the web server to access those configuration settings at runtime, probably through jndi names. Things like a document management server, a workflow server, etc. However I'm at a loss for how to configure custom jndi 'data sources' within wls' console. Is this possible?

• Attaching strace to 100% CPU Apache process - output

  I am having a problem with Apache2 spawning processes that use 100% CPU. • Access an external SSH server through a restrictive proxy [on hold]

  I'm a software developer. I wish to access my computer at home through SSH. For example, I sometime need to access my personal projects source code to check how I handled specific problems. Unfortunately, I currently work under an over-restrictive and anti-productive proxy that waste a hell of a lot of everyone's time (We often have to visit websites from our smartphones or use a web proxy to check very legitimates websites for answers, and don't get me started on other "security" overkill features we have to cope with...). Well, back to the subject, I can access my home computer from my phone (SSH, port 22 and 80 both redirected by router on port 22). It works, but it's quite uncomfortable.   Hello, due to a freeze problem of my Ubuntu 10.10 (it is not isolatable) I though about logging every executable of the kernel somehow in any file to see what happens last when a freeze occures the next time to not lose valuable information. I found acct but this is obviously not what I'm looking for. Actually it logs just user commands and those things. I need something which logs in a much "deeper" level. The best would be some kind of script which records every interrupt. Does anybody know some tool like that?

• External WiFi Adapter for Eee PC 1000?

  I have an original Eee PC 1000 running the stock Xandros. I have run into problems where the internal WiFi card does not seem to have enough sensitivity to connect to a lot of access points. Although the computer will report APs in the area, unless the signal strength is over 80% (as reported by the Wireless networks application) I cannot seem get a connection. So is there a recommended USB WiFi adapter that is known to work with the Eee PC/Xandros system or in general with a Debian based system?

  So, say I share my system (C) drive through windows (E.g. properties -> Sharing -> Advanced Sharing -> Share this Folder). I can then access this drive at \\Comp\C on another networked computer - all is well. However, if I insert a removable (USB) disk, say "E", and proceed to share it the same way, when I attempt to access \\Comp\E (either directly or through browsing) I get an error: Windows cannot access \\Comp\E You do not have permission to access \\Comp\E. Contact your network administrator to request access. Now, the permissions (Advanced Sharing -> Permissions) are set with "Everyone" having read access (same as the internal drive), so this doesn't make a lot of sense. Also of note, I have an SSH server on my computer (through Cygwin) and even through SSH (logging in as an administrator user) I cannot access /cygdrive/e (although /cygdrive/c is accessible). As a final note, the drive is of course accessible on the host machine (E:\), and also at \\Comp\E on the host machine.

  I am making an Excel 2010 spreadsheet to log support calls, services, and installations that each member would fill out. Due to being paid by job rather than by hour, there is a need for it to count each of these ("Call", "Service", "Install") there is in any given time span. The entry of the data itself would be in Sheet 1, and then a 'splash screen' of sorts would be in Sheet 2. Here I would like to be able to put a date range and it would display how many of each there is. I already can do the COUNTIF statement, =COUNTIF(Activity!$B:$B,"Call") but I don't know how to: a) Add in the prerequisite for a date so it only gets "Calls" within a certain time frame. b) Take the date it looks for from a cell on the splash screen.

• IIS doesn't respond to 127.0.0.1 (external IP works fine)

  I have an AWS web server - call it box.company.com. It's running IIS and if I visit http://box.company.com in a web browser (from any machine, including box.company.com), it responds correctly with our site. However, if I visit localhost/ or 127.0.0.1/ when I'm logged into box.company.com, I get a "couldn't connect to host" message. The hosts file has only one entry - the standard "127.0.0.1 localhost" line. Pinging 127.0.0.1 works fine. Pinging localhost correctly resolves to 127.0.0.1 and works fine. I've tried restarting IIS and restarting the DNS Cache. I had this problem once before, and restarting the server fixed it, but I'd like to know what's going on in case this happens again in the future.

  My server is set to send all email to a corporate relay server. For the company domain, it works perfectly. I've recently found emails being sent to an outside domain are getting the hostname of my server appended to the email prior to being sent. Here is the log entry for one such attempt. Nov 6 09:46:45 myservername sendmail[45023]: rA6EkjiI045023: [email protected], delay=00:00:00, xdelay=00:00:00, mailer=relay, pri=30590, relay=[127.0.0.1] [127.0.0.1], dsn=2.0.0, stat=Sent (rA6Ekj2g045037 Message accepted for delivery) Nov 6 09:46:45 myservername sendmail[45061]: rA6Ekj2g045037: to=<[email protected]>, delay=00:00:00, xdelay=00:00:00, mailer=relay, pri=120885, relay=relay.company.com [x.x.x.x], dsn=2.0.0, stat=Sent (ok: Message 342335947 accepted) Notice the email address difference between it being accepted by my server for delivery (correct email address), and being sent and accepted by the corporate relay (incorrect with server name appended). To make it more interesting, the application on my server uses email for user account verification/activation. In August, this particular user was able to register his account and activate it. I have made no configuration changes to mail since setting the server up over a year ago. DNS is also a corporate service.   I have a web server and a mail server. Both have the same domain name except, one points to mywebsite.com and the other is mail.mywebsite.com. They have different IPs. I'm trying to set up postfix on my web server so it uses my mail server as the server that sends e-mails. Is there a work around for this? Do I need to set up my mail server with a separate domain name? Also I have my MX records set up for both mywebsite.com and mail.mywebsite.com. I'm not that experienced with this so if I need to give more info let me know. Thanks!

  This may not be the right place, but since it is a more technical aspect of the hosting world, I am taking the liberty to ask: I'm currently running a virtual server with nginx and postfix for web and e-mail, but I can't handle the administration and, due to frequent problems with e-mail services, I need to resolve this with a almost-standard hosting package (anything should work, even 5 MB static files would be OK). The exception being that I would like to use several domains, hosted with different registrars, for web and e-mail. Currently, this is a very simple configuration in my setup. All hosters I have looked at seem to think this a costly business (more than domain registration costs), but of course the recommend to transfer domains to them (they want the $$). Does anyone know of a hosting company that allows its customers to freely manage domains registered somewhere else?

  The production server runs a PHP application on IIS 6.0. During the peak hours we have had a few issues where the php-cgi.exe processes increase in numbers and approach around 200. The server comes to a crawl and we have to restart the server a multiple times to restore the normal behavior. When the server is running normally, I have noticed that there are only 10-15 php-cgi.exe processes in the task manager. What could be causing the php-cgi.exe processes to increase in number from 10-15 to around 200 during the peak hours? Where should I look for a cause?

• Determining how all memory is used in Windows Server 2008

  I have a Windows Server 2008 system, which has 12GB of RAM. If I list all processes in the Task Manager, and SUM() the memory of each process (Working Set, Memory (Private Working Set), Commit Size, ...), I never reach more than 4-5GB that should be "in use". However, task manager reports this server has 11GB in use via the "Performance" tab. I'm failing in determining where all that used RAM is going. It doesn't seem to be system cache, but I can not be sure. It might be a memory leak in one of the appliances, but I'm struggling to find out which one. The server's memory keeps filing up, and eventually forces us to reboot the device to clear it. • Integrating external computer into a domain - some recommendations please

  Given: * A multi loation company. Every office has local routers that connect to a central VPN capable rouer in a data center. All fine so far. We now need to move a computer off site into a hosting center across the globe, to get it closer to some supplier computers we work for. it will run limited logic but latency is important, and our latency so far is too large. This computer will be in a data center and does no require incoming connections except for adminsitrative purposes, although it needs outgoing connetions. I have no real chance to put one of my VPN routers there, sadly - otherwise I would have no problem. Usage of RRAs is not recommended (we had various probblems there over time). I could deal with it. The computer MUSt integrate into the corporate structure via VPN and join the domain and be fully "tracked" (controlled for performance). What is the best suggestion? So far it looks like my best bets woudl be to log in via RRAS and deal with whatever issues arise there plus uise the local firewall the limit incoming connections to this computer to what is needed (which runs down to an emergency RDP connection allowance). Anyone a better idea?
