• Are there any purely functional Schemes or Lisps?

  Over the past few months, I've put a lot of effort into learning (or attempting to learn) several functional programming languages. I really like math, so they have been very natural for me to use. Simply to be more specific, I have tried Common Lisp, Scheme, Haskell, OCaml, and (a little bit of) Erlang. I did not like the syntax of OCaml and do not have enough Erlang knowledge to make a judgment on it yet. Because of its consistent and beautiful (non-)syntax, I really like Scheme. However, I really do appreciate the stateless nature of purely functional programming languages such as Haskell. Haskell looks very interesting, but the amount of inconsistent and non-extendable syntax really bothered me. In the interest of preventing a Lisp vs Haskell flame war, just pretend that I can't use Haskell for some other reason. Therefore, my question is: Are there any purely functional Schemes (or Lisps in general)?

  Well, as everyone knows there is no way you can assign permissions for Copy/Paste of files on windows platform. I need to control the copy process from a central file server, in a way that helps me know: which user performed the copy Which files were copied where did he pasted them Total size of data copied Time of copy operation If user exceeds the allowed "Copy-Limit", a dialog box requests him to enter administrative credentials or deny him (as it would be configured) Store all this data in a file for later review or send by email. I need to collect this data by putting a utility program on the server itself, without any other installation on client computers. I know about monitoring the Clipboard, but which clipboard would it be? the user's clipboard or the server's clipboard ? And what about drag-drop operation, which doesn't even pass through the clipboard? Any knowledge of whether SystemFileWatcher is useful in such case ? Any ideas ?

The good part is the getting-knowledge of Azure but on the other hand it is my personal blog and i really don't wanna spend to much money on it. So do you have any idea of how the pricing works? • nHibernate: Query tree nodes where self or ancestor matches condition

  I have see a lot of competing theories about hierarchical queries in fluent-nHibernate or even basic nHibernate and how they're a difficult beast. Does anyone have any knowledge of good resources on the subject. I find myself needing to do queries similar to: (using a file system analog) select folderObjects from folders where folder.Permissions includes :myPermissionLevel or [any of my ancestors] includes :myPermissionLevel This is a one to many tree, no node has multiple parents. I'm not sure how to describe this in nHibernate specific terms or, even sql-terms. I've seen the phrase "nested sets" mentioned, is this applicable? I'm not sure. Can anyone offer any advice on approaches to writing this sort of nHibernate query?

  I'm trying to find the actual class of a django-model object, when using model-inheritance. Some code to describe the problem: class Base(models.model): def basemethod(self): ... class Child_1(Base): pass class Child_2(Base): pass If I create various objects of the two Child classes and the create a queryset containing them all: Child_1().save() Child_2().save() (o1, o2) = Base.objects.all() I want to determine if the object is of type Child_1 or Child_2 in basemethod, I can get to the child object via o1.child_1 and o2.child_2 but that reconquers knowledge about the childclasses in the baseclass. I have come up with the following code: def concrete_instance(self): instance = None for subclass in self._meta.get_all_related_objects(): acc_name = subclass.get_accessor_name() try: instance = self.__getattribute__(acc_name) return instance except Exception, e: pass But it feels brittle and I'm not sure of what happens when if I inherit in more levels.

• Which testing method to go with? [Rails]

  I am starting a new project for a client today. I have done some rails projects before but never bothered writing tests for them. I'd like to change that starting with this new project. I am aware there are several testing tools, but am a bit confused as to which I should be using. I heard of RSpec, Mocha, Webrat, and Cucamber. Please keep in mind I never really wrote any regular tests, so my knowledge of testing in general is quite limited. How would you suggest I get started? Thanks!

  This is probably a very silly question (I just started learning Prolog a few hours ago), but is it possible to find all the clauses related to an atom? For example, assuming the following knowledge base: cat(tom). animal(X) :- cat(X). , is there a way to obtain every possible information about tom (or at least all the facts that are explicitly stated in the base)? I understand that a query like this is not possible: ?- Pred(tom). so I thought I could write a rule that would deduce the correct information: meta(Object, Predicate) :- Goal =.. [Predicate, Object], call(Goal). so that I could write queries such as ?- meta(tom, Predicate). but this does not work because arguments to call are not sufficiently instantiated. So basically my question is: is this at all possible, or is Prolog not design to provide this kind of information? And if it is not possible, why?

• Geocoding autocomplete bias not working

  I'm using the following code to get the autocomplete functionality for an address input box using Google Maps API v3: function initializeAutocomplete() { var defaultBounds = new google.maps.LatLngBounds( new google.maps.LatLng(1.484016,103.575212), new google.maps.LatLng(1.233592,104.033618)); var input = document.getElementById('destStreet'); var myOptions = {bounds: defaultBounds, types: ['geocode']}; autocomplete = new google.maps.places.Autocomplete(input, myOptions); } The problem is that biasing doesn't seem to work as the first results are usually not relevant to the defined bounds (a country). I've seen a few apps working fine, so I'm wondering where the problem is. I came across the JQuery autocomplete plugin (http://code.google.com/p/geo-autocomplete/) which would seem like a good alternative since it has a region filter, but I'm unable to "install it" or use it because of my very limited knowledge (I learn by example). Could you please help me getting more relevant results with the above code or guide me through the implementation of the JQuery alternative? Of course I'm very open to other suggestions as well.

  Firstly, I would like to say I think StackOverflow is a really great website, not just from a content perspective, but from a design perspective. The UI is designed in a way that makes it easy to use and the points are great incentives to be a productive part of the community. I was wondering, is there a part of the site, or maybe is there plans to make a new site, which is not programming driven. Like a general knowledge site but with StackOverflow as the engine. I use sites like Yahoo Answer! and they can be useful. But I think the main difference between Stack Overflow and Yahoo Answer is that Yahoo Answer encourages content indiscriminately, whereas Stack Overflow is disciplined enough that it only encourages content that are helpful or useful. I find it great that I can load up a question and the best answer pops up immediately, and the bad answers are voted down. Thanks

  Hello everyone. I'll cut right to the chase. Right now I am developing a web based application. It has a PHP REST based architecture that serves up XML documents. On many of these documents attributes are hex encoded picture strings. On the client side jQuery AJAX fetches an XML document with a picture in it. I need to display said picture in some <img> tags. However my knowledge on such methods is lacking so here I am asking for help. Goal: JavaScript String variable in hex or base64 HTML displayed image.   I'm making a desktop application in C# which contains a moving News Bar labels. I'm using a timer to move these labels but the problem is that when i make the interval of this timer low (1-10 for example) the application takes very high percentage of CPU Usage, And when i make it higher(200 -500 ) the movement of the labels becomes intermittent or not smooth movement even that the user may not be able to read the news in Comfortable way. ((More Information)) it is Windows form application. the way i move the labels is as follows : the news items from RSS feeds are represented in a group of linklabels. All these linklabels are added to a flowlayout container. The timer moves the whole flowlayout container. I found this way according to my knowledge the best way to making the news bar. If you have better idea or solution please help

• focus on page scroll navigation when using iPad

  I've used Page Scroller Lite http://pagescroller.com to set up a single-page site at http://www.thestitchshop.co.uk There seems to be an issue that scolling works only once when clicking on a menu item. It will only work again after one touched scrolls the page 'manually' by sliding the finger across the page. Apparently, the issue is that the content gets the focus after the scroll and tapping on navigation then actually taps behind it. I've tried contacting the author of pagecroller, but no luck. So, how do I fix it? I don't have any JS knowledge, so I need a little more help along the way. Many thanks. Over a period of nearly 9 years i've studied most mainstream languages (especially C based ones), used lots of different OSes, read and absorbed many books and even written one myself. But i still feel i'm usless! Do professional developers ever get to the stage where they feel confident that they know what they are doing and are confident when submitting solutions/code? When do you know you're good enough?

  If all browsers supported attribute selectors, we could easily do the following: input[type='text'] { font:bold 0.8em 'courier new',courier,monospace; } input[type='radio'] { margin:0 20px; } input[type='checkbox'] { border:2px solid red; But I don't think all IE versions of ^ and greater support this. I think I'd like to avoid skins. Not sure why, other than I tried them and I recall having a negative experience. It was probably my lack of knowledge. Are there any issues in using and CSS, external or otherwise? What's the best way to handle this? Currently I am assigning separate classes to each control type.

• flash - django communication -- amf, xml, or json?

  We are considering to develop a Flash front-end to a web application written using Django. The Flash front-end will send a simple "id" to the server and in response receive a couple of objects. The application will be open only to authenticated users. To the extend of my current knowledge (which is basic for Flash) we can either use AMF or take an XML or JSON approach. AMF seems to have an upperhand as there are examples out on the internet showing it can cooperate easily with Django's authentication mechanism (most examples feature pyAMF). On the other hand, implementing a XML/JSON based solution may be easier and hassle free. Guidance will be much appreciated.

I do not really know if this is scientifically proven, but I've read in a book (It was a relatively modern AI book by Peter Norvig) that secon-order logical programming could be more expressive than existing first-order languages. The question is: Is it statistically/symbolically proven that higher-order predicate logics exceed first-order predicates in their expressive power? Or they just bring the modularity/convenience/maintainability to your knowledge bases? Additionally: If there is some kind of firm direction in which I could go seeking more expressive power than I have (I mean exactly the descriptive potential of the symbols I write in given semantics/syntax) - then I would be glad to hear just almost everything :) Thank you.

  Have a few questions related to adding sounds to my game, specifically intro music (for splash), background music (loop) and button event sounds. Hope you can share your knowledge on this. 1) Should I use compressed sounds or uncompressed sounds? Or perhaps a combination of the two? Are there any limitations on the iPhone hardware that I should be aware of -- for example, the ability to play multiple compressed sounds? 2) What's the best audio format for my purpose? 3) For background music, I am thinking of using AVAudioPlayer.   I'm using an Axis2 client to access an external Webservice, whose WSDL starts with the following content: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?><!--Created by TIBCO WSDL--><wsdl:definitions xmlns:wsdl=... My call to sendReceive crashes with the following error: com.ctc.wstx.exc.WstxUnexpectedCharException: Unexpected character 'C' (code 67) in prolog; expected '<' The 'C' is the first character on the comment in the WSDL. Without that comment everything works fine, but as far as my knowledge of basic XML dictates that comment is correct. My question would be: Is this a bug in Axis2 or is the accessed WSDL malformed? Is there any way to prevent Axis2 from crashing under these circumstances?

• Resources to learn about engineering aspects of data analytics (OLAP, warehousing, ETL, etc.)

  I'm a math/stats guy, interested in learning more about the engineering aspects of "data analytics" (this may be an overly broad term, this is a case of "I don't know what I don't know", so I'm not sure how to be more specific). I'm fine with manipulating and analyzing the data once it's already stored somewhere and I can access it, and I'm fine with writing scripts and SQL queries (and have a general knowledge of things like normalization). What I don't know is the whole engineering process of capturing and storing the data. For example, terms I've heard thrown about that I only vaguely understand the meaning of include: - OLAP, OLTP - Data warehousing - ETL - ??? What's a good book (or any other resource) to learn about these kinds of things? What are things I should know about database design (normalization seems kinda "obvious" to me, something I would have done even before I knew the term -- is there anything else?)? In other words, for jobs falling under the umbrella term of "analytics engineer", what kinds of things should I know?

• Should I use Drupal or Kohana-type framework for a web "application"

  The debate is that I need a PHP Framework/Drupal with the flexibility to add custom features to a potentially large application (web and with an api). However, with a framework, like Kohana, I see myself tackling and re-inventing the wheel with the simple stuff like account management and cms stuff. Account management and quick data collection, like fast form creation, are tedious in Kohana but appear incredible simple in Drupal. On the other hand, based on my limited Drupal experience, I doubt building rapid custom "features" and allowing users to create "groups" and to manage their own roles within those groups is something Drupal can easily accomplish. To simplify, is Drupal capable of true Web Applications; where the application is a service and provides custom results to each user? Can it provide a dashboard-like interface for users to change their settings or preferences? Can it aggregate data from particular users to provide better results/info to others? If so, please point me to some knowledge :-)

  I've been trying to come up with something for a while now to no avail. My MySQL knowledge is rudimentary at best so I could use some guidance on what I should use for the following: I have 2 tables ('bible' and 'books') that I need to search from. Right now I am just searching 'bible' with the following query: SELECT * FROM bible WHERE text LIKE '%" . $query . "%' ORDER BY likes DESC LIMIT $start, 10 Now, I need to add another part that searches for some pretty advanced stuff. Here is what I want to do in pseudocode which I am aware doesn't work: SELECT * FROM bible WHERE books.book+' '+bible.chapter+':'+bible.verse = '$query' $query would equal something like Genesis 1:2, Genesis coming from books.book, 1 coming from bible.chapter and 2 coming from bible.verse Any help/guidance on this is much appreciated =)
