• Which language to learn C# or Salesforce.com/apex for C++ programmer [closed]

  Being a C++ programmer with 7-8 years of experience, I wanted to know the market trends. When I searched a little bit I found more jobs with keyword C# than C++ or Java. I am just wondering if it is a good idea to learn C# or Java from a career perspective. Also, I read somewhere about Salesforce/apex. It was mentioned that this is something in vogue. So my question is which technology I should go for C#/Java/Salesforce(Apex) from career perspective? Thanks

• Are there similarities between operating system kernels and programming language kernels?

  I know very little about Smalltalk but I noticed that there's a frequent mention of the "kernel". Dan Ingalls prime maintainer of several implementations of Smalltalk also worked on a Javascript environment called "Lively Kernel" and in Peter Siebel's book he kept mentionning the "kernel". I cannot help but think that it is no coincidence that the creators of Smalltalk used the name of a (central) part of operating systems to refer to a particular component of their language. Was it because Smalltalk intended to act as an operating system? Was it because theory behind programming languages and operating systems have a lot in common? What is the reason behind the common appelation of the two components?

• Get system info from C program?

  I'm writing a little program in C that I want to use to output some system stats to my HD44780 16x2 character display. The system I'll be working with is a Debian ARM system and, although irrelevant, the display is on the GPIO header.(The system is a Raspberry Pi). As an initial (somewhat unambitious) attempt, I'd like to start with something simple like RAM and CPU usage (I'm new to C). I understand that if I make external command calls I need to fork() and execve() (or some equiv that will let me return the results), what I would like to know is how I go about getting the information I want in a nice clean format that I can use. Surely I will not have to call (for e.g); free -h And then use awk or similar to chop out the piece I want? There must be a cleaner way? The question should be seen as more of a generic, what is best practice for getting info about the system in C (the RAM/CPU usage are just an initial example).

• Handheld device software - Handheld tuners?

  Hey I've been looking around and really don't understand what software some of these company's use for their handheld devices. I've used a lot of Handheld Tuners (Cobb Accessport, Diablo Sport). I've gotten more and more knowledgable of programming and I'm really wanting to understand what software they use on these devices to have a graphical interface. And to hold all the files to flash over to the ecu. I'm just unsure how you would get basically all the components to work together (screen, buttons, memory) without having drivers installed. I could be totally wrong here on using the term drivers, but that's what I would like some help to get more knowledge on (only thing I've really found is making a handheld game boy from scratch,but that was using a emulator.). I've tried looking it up but can't really find a good write up or explanation anywhere I look. Just really would like to put a little device together and have a simple user interface and work from there. Thanks, Nathan

• What are my tool options to prototype a 2D multiplayer game?

  I'm looking for the best tool to allow me to quickly put together a 2D game that relies largely on networking. It's extremely likely that this game will require a server side program to constantly run. I have little experience with these things and since it's a prototype i'd like the easiest options for achieving this. I am looking to make this game for the web and mobile devices, although at present I only have access to ios hardware, (no android etc). I just want to get the bare bones of this set up so I can test it from the earliest opportunity to see if it's fun.

• SQL Server Data Tools–BI for Visual Studio 2013 Re-released

  Customers used to complain that the tooling for creating BI projects (Analysis Services MD and Tabular, Reporting Services, and Integration services) has been based on earlier versions of Visual Studio than the ones they were using for their other work in Visual Studio (such as C#, VB, and ASP.NET projects). To alleviate that problem, the shipment of those tools has been decoupled from the shipment of the SQL Server product. In SQL Server 2014, the BI tooling isn’t even included in the released version of SQL Server. This allows the team to keep up-to-date with the releases of Visual Studio. A little while back, I was really pleased to see that the Visual Studio 2013 update for SSDT-BI (SQL Server Data Tools for Business Intelligence) had been released. • Command to determine whether a fullscreen application is running?

  I have a small shell script that plays a little jingle and displays a notification whenever I get a new email. The problem is that this shell script can get invoked anytime - including when I'm watching a DVD / video in fullscreen mode with the sound turned up quite a bit - which is quite annoying. I'd like to enhance this script with the ability to detect whether an application is in fullscreen mode. I know this must be somehow possible because notifications don't display under those circumstances. What command can I use?

• Is it possible to power down my external via the eject button?

  I'm trying to convert from Windows 7 to Ubuntu 12.10 with Gnome 3.6. Using the notification area's eject icon, I notice the partition is unmounted but the drive is still powered and spinning... I understand the latter can be taken care of by means of udisks --detach /dev/sdb I really don't want to have to run a command everytime I eject. Windows does the whole process when ejecting a medium via the systray. Is there a way I could add in the command to the eject button? Is there an appropriate place I could file a feature request? Little things like this are making it hard for me to swap back over to Linux. Thanks for the support!

• Ubuntu 12.04 wont install on Macbook

  I've installed Ubuntu on my Macbook before but something went wrong with the updater. So, I had to backup my HDD and format it and reinstall OS X Lion. But here's the thing: Ever since I re-installed my OS I've been trying to get Ubuntu back on the HDD. I partitioned it to 40 GB and set the file system to Ext4. I also recently created a swap partition too and it seems to install correctly. After i installed rEFIt it just has this cute little penguin sitting there. I rebooted and tried to go back to Ubuntu and the penguin still shows up but this time a black screen pops up and it asks me to insert a bootable device and press any key. I'm not sure why this is happening. This is probably the 5th time I've tried to install it. I've even used a different Ubuntu ISO but it still won't boot after the installation.

  Is it considered an overkill for console application to be design like MVC , MVP or N tier architecture? If not which is more common and if you can link me to simple example of it. I want to implement a tic tac toe game in console application. I have a solution which hold two projects: TicTacToeBusinessLogic (Class library project) and TicTacToeConsoleApplication (Console application project) to represent the view logic. In the TicTacToeConsoleApplication I've Program.cs class which holds the main entry point (public static void Main). Now I face a problem. I want the game to handle its own game flow so I can: Create new GameManager class (from BL) but this causing the view to directly know the BL part. So I'm a little confused how to write it in an acceptable way. Should I use delegates? Please show me a simple example.

• Graphics problem after updating to Kernel 3.11 with Ubuntu 13.04 64bit

  I am new to ubuntu.I have a 64 bit intel processor with ATI 6570 graphics card. Now Ubuntu 13.04 is working fine with stock kernel(3.8). But as I read somewhere that kernel 3.11 do support ATI graphics card better, I tired updating them with no success. I tried 3.11.6 3.11.4 3.11.0 but with all of them I am facing the same problem ... after installing them and restart, the screen resolution get distorted and the unity becomes too slow transparency in dash and the launcher is also lost. Now whatever little I know , this may be related with graphics diver either they are not present or the graphic card is not turned on. Can some one help with this. And yeah i tried ubuntu 13.10 that worked fine but it has some bugs. and yeah please pardon me for my bad English.

• Ubuntu Freezes w/ Proxy

  Ubuntu 11.04 freezes completely after a little while when using a proxy. It's fine when it's got a direct Internet connection, but it completely grinds to a halt after about 10 or 15 minutes of traffic through a proxy. Any ideas? UPDATE: Here's some more information. I have a second-generation MacBook, which has both OSX 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard) and Ubuntu 11.04 (Natty Narwhal) installed on it. When running through a proxy, Snow Leopard works fine, but Ubuntu freezes frequently. Any suggestions at all? Or, rather, what other kinds of information do you need?

  I installed Ubuntu 11.10 recently by making a 5.6GB partition from the Ubiquity installer. I wanted to upgrade to 12.04, so I opened the Update Manager and clicked on 'Update Packages' (I was following this guide) After clicking, it said that there was too little space available. So, I want to enlarge my Ubuntu partition so that there is appropriate space for upgrading. I downloaded Gparted. I read another guide which said my computer won't boot if I resize the Ubuntu partition because '/boot will be misplaced and I will have to repair GRUB2 myself.' So how do I do this easily? • low level api or graphics library?

  Well, I want to learn game development, I've already know a little bit about xna, ogre and DX but, I want to choose one of them and stick with it. I'm not trying to make a "directx vs xna, ogre vs opengl, etc." thread. Some people told me that it's better to learn an engine like Ogre because you can develop games directly and you don't have to worry about the low level details, I know that. Other people told me that it's better to learn a low level api before learning something like Ogre because you will able to understand how it works. Is it valuable to have experience with Ogre or another engine but don't know anything about a low level api? What do you recommend me? Thanks in advance.

• Broke my sudoers password, how do I reset it without using sudo?

  I thought it would be a good idea to finally take the password off my little netbook since it has never actually been of any use, and has mostly just slowed down . But when I went to change my password, there wasn't even an option to make it blank, and any attempt to make it a few easy characters was met with "Password too weak". So I did what any good geek would do and popped open the terminal, read the manual entry for passwd and quickly used the -d option to remove the password from my account. It all went well for a couple days (I even managed to also make my keychain password blank) until I tried to update the thing. My sudoers password is not blank, and it's not my old password. I have no idea what it is. How do I reset it (or even better, make it blank) without the use of the sudo command?

  I am wondering if a Mono C# application can somehow run a terminal command. For example, could the user give the program his or her password and then have the application run sudo apt-get install application-name (console requests password) password (console requests confirmation) y Preferably, this would be done without actually opening a terminal visible to the user, so that the application could provide the necessary feedback and manage the whole operation cleanly with as little user interaction as possible.   I try to accomplish an deforming physic behaviour for levelsurfaces, but don't get an idea how to start with the implemenation so far. Regardless of the shape from the surface (planes, cubes, spheres…), I want to have small indentations at the positions from game-entitys (players, enemys, objects…). It's kind of complicated to explain, so I illustrated what I'm talking about (here is an example with an sphere): So, the surfaces should be able to deforming themselfs a little bit (to apear like an really soft bed or sofa). My surfaces need probably an high vertices count to get an smooth deforming, but my big problem is the math for calculating this deforming… I'm programming in C/C++ with OpenGL, but will be fine with any advices in the right direction. • Setting density for Android game

  I am developing an Android game, in which a ball (bitmap) translates( is in motion). So I have provided motion equations for the ball. I have checked my app on Samsung galaxy S2 whose actual density is roundly 252 dpi, and It works fine on that. So my question is that Does these motions of bitmaps in surfaceView, depends on actual density of phone( i.e 252 dpi for S2) or generalized density(i.e 240 dpi). I am confused whether if I run this app on 235 dpi smartphone, So will it have the same performance of motion as it is on Galaxy S2( with 252 dpi) or it would be little slow ? Any help will be appreciated.
