• Is it possible to rent an IP address to mask the server real IP address?

  A customer would like to lease an IP address and point it to a dedicated web server with the intention of "masking" the server's IP address so it would be difficult to tell where the site is hosted. Can they rent an IP address from a 3rd party in order to hide the server's IP address?   I have a setup of several Tomcat servers distributed between a few servers, all running the same thing. Apache is on top of Apache and a loadbalancer in front of the Apache servers. I want to cluster the Tomcats using Shared Session to minimize downtime and user interruption while deploying apps. I know clustering works within the same server but is it possible to setup Tomcat in a way that it shares sessions between servers on different machines? => Server 1 ==> Apache 1 ===> Tomcat 1 => Server 2 ==> Apache 2 ===> Tomcat 2 When Server/Tomcat 1 would be taken down, users and their sessions would transfer over to Server/Tomcat 2 and vice versa.

• Chromebook, Crouton & “External Drive” is it possible to rename the folder?

  I have a Chromebook where I installed Crouton. I have plugged an SD Card and Chromebook detects it as "External Drive". In my Ubuntu instance, it's located at /media/removable/External Drive/ but this poses some problems for executing some applications I have installed on that external drive. In order to fix the problem, I need to remove all the spaces in the path, which is located in "External Drive". My question is simple, is it possible to move/rename the mount name "External Drive" to something else and doing it automatically at every mount/boot ? Thank you for your help !

  We use RAID1+0 with md on Linux (currently 2.6.37) to create an md device, then use LVM to provide volume management on top of the device, and then use ext4 as our filesystem on the LVM volume groups. With SSDs as the drives, we'd like to see the TRIM commands propagate through the layers (ext4 - LVM - md - SSD) to the devices. It looks like recent 2.6.3x kernels have had a lot of new SSD-related TRIM support added, including lots more coverage of Device Mapper scenarios, but we still can't seem to get it to cascade down properly. Is this possible yet? If so, how? If not, is any progress being made?

• Possible to get IIS on Windows Server 2008 R2 to "port-forward" port 80 for certain domains to other

  I have IIS set up on my server, but also Apache x2 (other products which comes with their own servers, cannot be integrated into IIS.) Is it possible for me to "port-forward" certain domains on port 80 (that IIS handles) to those other ports? For instance: www.vkarlsen.no - IIS svn.vkarlsen.no - port 81 on same machine teamcity.vkarlsen.no - port 82 on same machine Or do I just need to set up those domains and redirect to the correct port? I'd like the domain name and url to be transparent to the user, but perhaps that won't work. Can anyone shed some light on this?

• Is it possible to run pgp 6.5.8 freeware on Windows 7 64 bit machine?

  I am trying to get the PGP Command Line -Freeware Version 6.5.8 by Networks Associates working on a Wndows 7 64 bit machine. Does anyone know if it is possible? I installed it in C:\pgp when i run pgp, it keeps telling me that it can't find the pgp.cfg file. My PGPPATH is defined and set to C:\pgp I have also included this path in my Path variable Can anyone tell me what i am doing wrong. The documentation states that: "The first time you start PGP, the software checks to see if the environment variable PGPPATH is defined. If PGPPATH is defined, the software puts the pgp.cfg in the %PGPPATH% directory" Edit: This is most likely a Windows 7 professional folder rights issue, since the file pgp.cfg can't get written. I tried my best given the folder full rights, but im not 100% confident that i did it right. Anyone help me?

  Hi guys, I am sure this is server admin 101,but I am unsure of the answer and would love some help. I am a software developer I have built an application for a client and am currently hosting it successfully on SliceHost. We are now coming out of Beta and the client wants to have the application within their Firewall, but they do not want to deal with headache of hosting and maintaining the server. Is there a way I can recommend that we put our server at SliceHost within their Firewall? Is that an easy thing to do? If that is not possible, what should I recommend to my client? Thanks! Jonathan

• Is it possible to mount a hot-swappable drive when it is turned on?

  In my PC, I have a hot-swap drive. Usually I keep it off to save power. I only really use it when accessing from another PC on the network. Is it possible to configure /etc/fstab to mount this drive when I turn it on (without having to shake the mouse, open file manager and click the drive to have it mounted? Currently, I have: UUID=a869e5ca-7d3b-4d64-91e2-eadbecd8c9e5 /media/i-TVShows ext4 rw,nosuid,nodev,auto,user,uhelper=udisks 0 0 in my /etc/fstab file but it doesn't seem to do the trick. I want the drive to be user-mountable, on power on, with RW access, and I'm thinking of adding 'nofail'...this is my first time writing to the fstab file, and a lot of the parameters I took from the output of 'mount' so feel free to correct any oddness you find. Almost 100 megs for NVidias' GeForce/Ion bloatware. 300 megs for an HP printer driver with immense amount of crap 30 megs for a Realtek integrated sound card driver. 50 megs for a mouse driver ...and dozens and dozens of other similar examples Additinally, UI/UX on vendors' sites is really terrible: I have to carefully pick and choose the exact model of my whatever, although this packages do contain drivers for pretty much every possible hardware model out there. My question is: How and where can I download true minimal drivers without all these ATI "Installation Managers", Realtek GUIs, ASUS tools, etc.?

  I'm very used to my Linux desktop, but in my new job I'm forced to use Windows. For efficiency, I'm veeery used to minimize/maximize using keyboard shortcuts and move/resize windows using alt+mouse. Thus, window titlebars and borders are useless, and I can remove them using Compiz. My question is: is this remotely possible to be done in Windows Vista? I could manage to quite reduce the borders, but the titlebars still bother me. I also found that Win+M minimizes a window, and I think that would help with the shortcuts also.   I've successfully connected to my Windows 7 desktop over wifi via Telnet from an XP Home netbook. To login, I use the following command: telnet -l "win7desktop\win7user" win7desktop win7user in this case is an Administrator on win7desktop and is also a member of the Telnet Clients Group. The problem I have is that when I attempt to shut down win7desktop by issuing the following command: shutdown /s ...at the Telnet prompt, I get an Access Denied error: Access is denied.(5) Is it possible to shutdown a remote computer running Windows 7 via Telnet? If so, what do I need to do to get around the Access is denied error?

  I have Visual Studio 2008 Team System installed on my work machine. I use it to work for an offisite clients Team Foundation Server 2008. Yesterday it stopped working. E.G. I couldn't connect to TFS. On my machine I have updates disabled, I have the firewall disabled and have a proper working connection to my clients server. The client didn't change anything on its machine. What are the possible reasons the visual studio couldn't find the TFS server. Note: Other members of my team can connect without problems, and I've checked we have the same configurations).

• Re-using port 443 for another service - is it possible?

  The ultimate goal is to allow a remote data connection service to operate on port 443 on a the SQL server. The application accessing the connection is behind a firewall and it is because of the client's reluctance to open another port that I have been asked to try and get this working. The current environment is Windows 2003 R2 (SP2) and SQL Server 2005. IIS is not installed, but when I try and install the third party connection software (SequeLink) it won't as it reports something is still configured on/using port 443. Netstat does not show anything listening on the port and I've tried editing the system32\drivers\etc\services file removing any reference to port 443 and also using sc delete to delete the HTTP and HTTPFilter (HTTP SSL in services console) services to see if this would help. Rebooting after each change. What could still be using the port? Is what I'm trying even possible (I have my doubts but have to investigate every avenue)? Any help/pointers would be greatly appreciated.

  I'm not even sure if this is possible... Also, please forgive my ignorance on the subject. What I'm looking for is for "something" that would allow me to redirect all TCP traffic arriving to host A to host B, but based on some rules. Say host A (the intermediary) receives a request (say a simple HTTP request) from a host with domain X. In that case, it lets it pass through and it's handled by host A itself. Now, let's suppose that host A receives another HTTP request from a host with domain Y, but this time, due to some customizable rules, host A redirects all the traffic to host B, and host B is able to handle it as if came directly from domain Y. And, at this point, both host B and the host with domain Y are able to freely communicate (of course, thought host A). NOTE: All these hosts are on the Internet, not inside a LAN. Please, let me know if the explanation is not clear enough.

• SQL Server: Is it possible to prevent SQL Agent from failing a step on error?

  I have a stored procedure that runs custom backups for around 60 SQL servers (mixes 2000 through 2008R2). Occasionally, due to issues outside of my control (backup device inaccessible, network error, etc.) an individual backup on one or two databases will fail. This causes this entire step to fail, which means any subsequent backup commands are not executed and half of the databases on a given server may not be backed up. On the 2005+ boxes I am using TRY/CATCH blocks to manage these problems and continue backing up the remaining databases. On a 2000 server however, for example, I have no way to prevent this error from failing the entire step: Msg 3201, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 Cannot open backup device 'db-diff(\PATH\DB-DIFF-03-16-2010.DIF)'. Operating system error 5(Access is denied.). Msg 3013, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 BACKUP DATABASE is terminating abnormally. I am simply asking if anything like this is possible in SQL 2000 or if I need to go in a completely different direction.

• Multi-monitor setup: one widescreen monitor, one regular (4:3) monitor; is this usually possible?

  I'm trying to find out whether it's generally possible to have a multi-monitor setup with both a widescreen monitor and a regular monitor (ie. one with a 4:3 picture ratio). I'd like to run them in Extended Desktop mode on a Windows Vista machine. The computer is a Dell notebook with an onboard Intel GMA 4500MHD graphics chipset. While I know that this notebook is capable of driving multiple monitors, I don't know if it is also able to drive monitors with varying resolutions. Does anyone know if differing screen resolutions is generally a problem?

  I bought the SanDisk ReadyCache 32GB SSD drive this week. I didn't know about the caching stuff and thought that I would be able to install Windows 8 on it. Now I'm using it as a cache drive with the ExpressCache software. But I wonder if it is possible to use this SSD as a primary system drive with an operating system installed on it. I've tried to format the disk via Windows Disc Manager Tool, but the format option is disabled. Only delete and information options are allowed. Can you help me with this?

  Having a Windows Server 2008 R2 that has a share with lots of nested folders, I want to be able to only show certain folders to certain AD users/AD user groups. Is it possible to configure the permissions on single folders, so that clients that connect with Windows XP/Windows 7 to the share on the Windows 2008 R2 server only see those folders for which they have "view" permission? Other clients should not see the folders at all in Windows Explorer. I was told that this seems to be a standard feature on Novell networks.

• Possible to use LVM partitions inside a vmbuilder created KVM virtual machine?

  I have an Ubuntu 9.10 host system with LVM partitions running KVM. I've been creating VMs using vmbuilder using LVM partitions for each VM instead of files for the VMs. When I configure a VM using vmbuilder --part, the partitions in the file I'm using are created as regular partitions (sda1, sda2, etc.). What I'd like to do is use LVM inside of the VM in case I need to resize the partitions at some point. But I don't see any options for doing that using the vmbuilder tool. It seems like this might be a common request to avoid using kpartx, etc. Is there something I'm missing, or is this just not possible with vmbuilder?

  According to Dell's own website, the Windows Server 2012 media driver "inbox" does not contain drivers for the Perc S100 controller that is in a Dell PowerEdge T110 II server we'd like to evaluate with Server 2012. I have found drivers only for Server 2008 R2, which is what the server is currently running. Is it possible to upgrade this server? (Booting up the Server 2012 DVD image leads to the expected result that it can not locate the system's hard drives or its hard drive controller card, as the drivers for the PERC S100 are not on the installation DVD image.)

  This is a theoretical problem I am curious about. Websites are hosted on servers. Servers can be taken offline. Is it possible to host a website in the 'ether' of the Internet -- not on a server -- so that it cannot be taken down? One example, is that the website is hosted on other websites, like a parasite. Another is that it is assembled through storing pieces on DNS machines, routers, etc., so that it get assembled on the fly. The purpose is that this website could live forever because no one person can remove it. The answers I am looking for are plausible idea/approaches on technically how this could be built.

• Openoffice.org: Mouse wheel one row at a time possible?

  I noticed this in Excel, now in OpenOffice.org calc. One small change in mouse wheel leads to 3 rows (line) change. Is it possible to change in Calc OR/AND in Excel? EDIT: Yes, I know about system wide setting about the number of lines for one notch of scroll. But in some applications this setting is interpreted related to size in pixels so scrolling is predictable, but for some like spreadsheet is not. Since the height of line in a cell differ depending of the cell content, with other setting as 1 you will have a guarantee of unpredictable content before your eyes with only one notch.

• Possible to install Xmonad on Ubuntu separate from Gnome?

  I just downloaded Xmonad from the repository on my Ubuntu 10.04 box, but when I log out and try to log back in using Xmonad instead Gnome, it doesn't work. I just get the login screen background image and a mousepointer, and nothing else. Right-clicking does nothing, no menus or anything. Key combo's like Ctrl-X, Ctrl-Z, and Ctrl-Alt-Delete do nothing either. Left the computer in this state for 30 minutes while I went to the grocery store, but it was still hung when I returned and I had to hard-reboot it. A Google search returned a few sites showing how to configure Xmonad to work with Gnome, but I'm afraid to try this since I don't want to risk borking my Gnome installation, at least not until I've had a chance to learn Xmonad a bit. Is it possible to run Xmonad independently of Gnome? If so, anyone have any idea what might be wrong and how to fix it?
