• Clicking links in pdfs opened with Okular opens Abiword (instead of the default browser)

  I work with Xubuntu 12.04 and use Okular (version 0.14.3) to view pdf files. If I click a link in a pdf file (created with pdflatex using the hyperref package), Abiword is opened instead of my default browser google-chrome. How can I change this behavior? The settings in Okular do not seem to provide a solution. (Note that I set google-chrome as the preferred application for web browsing under Settings - Preferred Applications, so that's not the problem).

• Ubuntu 12.04 - Wakes from Suspend by itself

  This problem has only just started and I don't know what has changed to cause it. I suspend my ubuntu 12.04 PC and it used to stay asleep until I hit the enter key to wake it up but for the last week or so it's been waking itself up. I've checked the BIOS settings and all the Wake on Lan settings are Disabled. I've used the ethtool command and the wake on lan is set to "d" which I've read been off. Can anyone suggest anything?

• How to make Unity's Dash save the results filtering?

  The dash can remember the settings for filtered results for the entire session, but not beyond that. Once the profile is logged out and back in the results would reset to their original settings; displaying all the results without filtering. How can I make the results filtering more permanent? IE: How to make the photo lens for instance always show photos from "This Computer" and not from Picasa or Facebook across sessions and not just temporarily?

  I checked various questions on Stack Overflow but one thing every logic lacks. Let me demonstrate using Python: while True: user_input = raw_input() if type(user_input) == str: print 'ERROR' else: print 'BINGO' Also, we cannot use input() in place of raw_input() as it gives the error:Traceback (most recent call last): File ".\test.py", line 3, in <module> user_input = int(input()) File "<string>", line 1, in <module> NameError: name 'asdf' is not defined The problem here is that raw_input converts the user input into string so it always prints 'ERROR' and if I change the second line to user_input = int(raw_input) then, it gives an error: Traceback (most recent call last): File ".\test.py", line 3, in <module> user_input = int(raw_input()) ValueError: invalid literal for int() with base 10: 'asdf' I tried this with try and except but it shall work fine to check integer but not a string. I feel that this question may be marked as a duplicate but I think that this query is important, if logically taken.

• Incorrect monitor colours

  I'm using Ubuntu 11.10 and my monitor had a problem where Green is the bright colour, there's no way to change it in the monitor settings, so when I was using WinXP (I'm new in here) I changed the green to lower using Video Driver settings, in here (ubuntu) I don't know exactly how I would change the green colour to low, so my "black" would be seem has a real black, no green. • Legitimate use of the Windows "Documents" folder in programs.

  Anyone who likes their Documents folder to contain only things they place there knows that the standard Documents folder is completely unsuitable for this task. Every program seems to want to put its settings, data, or something equally irrelevant into the Documents folder, despite the fact that there are folders specifically for this job1. So that this doesn't sound empty, take my personal "Documents" folder as an example. I don't ever use it, in that I never, under any circumstances, save anything into this folder myself. And yet, it contains 46 folders and 3 files at the top level, for a total of 800 files in 500 folders. That's 190 MB of "documents" I didn't create. Obviously any actual documents would immediately get lost in this mess. My question is: can anything be done to improve the situation sufficiently to make "Documents" useful again, say over the next 5 years? Can programmers be somehow educated en-masse not to use it as a dumping ground? Could the OS start reporting some "fake" location hidden under AppData through the existing APIs, while only allowing Explorer and the various Open/Save dialogs to know where the "real" Documents folder resides? Or are any attempts completely futile or even unnecessary? 1For the record, here's a quick summary of the various standard directories that should be used instead of "Documents": RoamingAppData for user-specific data and settings. This is the directory to use for user-specific non-temporary data. Anything placed here will be available on any machine that a given user logs on to in networks where this is configured. Do not place large files here though, because they slow down login/logout in such environments. LocalAppData for user-and-machine-specific data and settings. This data differs for every user and every machine. This is also where very large user-specific data should be placed. ProgramData for machine-specific data and settings. These are the same regardless of which user is logged on, and will not roam to other machines in a network. GetTempPath for all files that may be wiped without loss of data when not in use. This is also the place for things like caches, because like temporary data, a cache does not need to be backed up. Place your huge cache here and you'll save your user some backup trouble. "Documents" itself should only ever be used if the user specified it manually by entering a path or selecting it in a Save dialog. That is the only time it is ever appropriate to save stuff in "Documents".

• Moving the jBullet collision body to with the player object

  I am trying to update the location of the rigid body for a player class, as my player moves around I would like the collision body to also move with the player object (currently represented as a cube). • Network switching issues with MacOS 10.7?

  I'm having a wired problem and hope somebody can tip me, what way should I dig to. I'm using MacBookPro with Lion 10.7.3 both at my working place & at home. At working place, we have a domain-based network with 802.1x authorization (more than 400 computers) and to connect it I'm using Ethernet cable. IP range is 10.10.2.*. All network settings are setup automatically by DHCP. Also, in settings, I have Network Account Server setup in the User&Groups Settings for my work Domain server - and it is available only from corporate network. At home, I have an ADSL router, that shares Internet connection by WiFi in NAT mode. I'm using WiFi to connect it. Router gives out addresses from 192.168.1.* range and all settings are also set up by router's DHCP. So, my problem is the following. When I come back home from the office, I open my MacBook and AirPort automatically connects my WiFi network. After this, for about 1 minute I'm able to browse sites & ping hosts successfully. But after this minute, network connection is broken down. All pings return time-out. trace route to google.com stops on 192.168.1.1 (which is my router). This lasts for 3-4 minutes. After that network connection is automatically repaired and all pings go smoothly again. At the same time, when my MacBook return timeouts, I can successfully ping any host from my wife's MacBook - so this doesn't look like router issue. When I come to the office, I don't have any issues and Internet connection is available & stable moments after ethernet cable plugged in. Do anybody has any clues about this? What should I monitor & what settings look for resolving this issue? Please, ask, what additional information should I provide. Hoping for good advice & thanks in advance!

  I have an Nvidia card and two monitors. Every time I log in to Unity on Ubuntu 11.10, I get this error: "Could not apply the stored configuration for monitors" I have tried opening nvidia-settings, but none of my experimental alterations to any of the settings has made a difference. I can still use my computer, but it seems to break the themes, icons, and styles so my computer looks like Unix circa 1992, which is a pretty annoying. How do I kill this error?

• Automatically change resolution when not in dock

  I have Ubuntu 11.04 (yep, I know it's old news) on my Lenovo W520. At home, I have a dock with dual monitors. I have a pretty decent setup - things work almost perfectly (hence the reason I'm reluctant to upgrade... that and I'm not 100% sold on Unity). Anyway, the only annoyance I have is that when I'm on travel, I use the laptop screen. When I un-dock the laptop, I need to manually go into nvidia x-server settings and change the resolution from 'Auto' to 1920x1200, or it will think I have two screens, and my mouse pointer will be able to go way off the left side of the screen. This isn't a big deal, but I need to do it every time I restart the x-server (so if I reboot, or have to kill it, etc...) What would be really nice is if there was a way for it to automatically detect whether or not there is external monitors (which it seems to do already), and switch into the mode I select, depending on which monitors are connected. Is there any way to accomplish this? • Synaptics Touchpad v7.4 cannot move while pressing a key?

  My Synaptics Touchpad v7.4 won't move when I'm using my arrow keys. Everywhere I've looked on the internet is telling me to go to Device Pointer Properties Settings Pointing Sensitivity Palm Check and adjust those Palm Check settings, but that option isn't there and it isn't anywhere else.
